The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“I don’t know, should I run for president? The terrifying thing is, I might win.” Stephanie Clifford

Quote II

"Frankly this law was actually signed into effect in 2008 under her husband's leadership. Not under this administration" Sarah Sanders

Quote III

The Royal Free Hospital. This free health care doesn't sound free.

Hundreds of thousands more families could be forced to pay the higher 40p rate of income tax under plans to give the NHS a £20.5billion-a-year cash boost.

Ministers have been told that freezing the tax-free allowance at £12,500 and the point at which the higher rate kicks in at £50,000 would raise billions of pounds from 2020.

But the Institute for Fiscal Studies said this would raises taxes on everyone earning over £12,500 and drag an extra 400,000 people into the 40p income tax band in just two years.

The NHS needs to kill them off faster.

I'm not trying to step on CBD's toes, really I'm not. Summer treats for you and your dog.

While every season holds different charms for dog owners (even brutal winter walks give way to magic moments with doggos frolicking in the snow!), there’s nothing quite like lazy summer days with your furry friend. It’s the season of restaurant patios, front stoop sittin’, and beach outings, all rife with opportunities to bring along your buddy (sun’s out, tongues out). And while you can totally pony up a few bucks for those fancy dog cupcakes at your favorite cupcake shop, or blow away your Starbucks budget with too many Puppuccino trips (they’re free, but you need a treat, too!), there are plenty of frozen concoctions that you can make at home for both you and your pup to enjoy!

A Democratic congressional candidate appears to have a weeeeee problem. Law suit filed to remove candidate from ballot.

A lawsuit seeking to remove Arizona Democrat Ann Kirkpatrick's name from the ballot this November could stymie the former congresswoman's attempt to run for the House again.

Kirkpatrick represented Arizona's first congressional district beginning in 2009, but was voted out of office in the 2010 Republican wave election. She won back her seat in 2012 and 2014, but then decided to forgo reelection to challenge John McCain unsuccessfully in the 2016 Senate race.

Now Kirkpatrick aims to return to Congress, this time in Arizona's neighboring second district. But a lawsuit from three voters bankrolled by her primary opponent, Matt Heinz, claims she gave false information to election officials about her place of residency.

I know that some GOP swamp creatures are guilty of not residing in their districts. But it is always funny when "Our Betters" are called out for being hypocrites.

The 2nd Amendment and gun ownership keeps getting interesting. There are more guns in the USA than there are people.

We did it! According to a decade-long survey of gun ownership around the world, the United States now has more firearms than people, about 1.2 guns for every man, woman and child. It’s always appalled civilian disarmament types and their media stenographers that Americans love their guns so much, so expect this news – that America accounts for almost half the one billion civilian-owned firearms globally — to induce plenty of spittle-spraying cries of horror and think pieces lamenting the depravity of a nation so in love with guns.

The times, they are a changin'.

In 1896, Charles Dow created what came to be known as the Dow Jones Industrial Average—an index consisting of just 12 companies at the time, meant to signal the state of the industrial sector. Nestled among outfits focused on cotton, sugar, tobacco, and railroads was General Electric, then a four-year-old electric company.

Today, some 122 years after the DJIA’s debut, GE is being booted from the list.

On Tuesday (June 19), Dow Jones announced it would be replacing GE in the index with Walgreens Boots Alliance. The change will take effect before the market opens on June 26.

Would you like a chuckle? Starbucks is planning on 150 stores.

The coffee chain Starbucks today announced plans to close 150 locations.

The 150 poorly performing company-operated cafés will be closed next year. That's about three times as many stores as Starbucks typically closes per year.

From CNN Money:

The company told investors late Tuesday that it expects same-store sales to grow just 1% for the quarter that begins next month, lowering its previous guidance. The stock slumped 3.5% in after-hours trading.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said the whole incident began around 8:30 p.m. Thursday after officers received a 911 call that 3-year-old Remy Elliott wandered from her home in the town of Qulin, located about 175 miles south of St. Louis.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Clark Parrott told the Associated Press a search began that included an airplane, but the girl was not found overnight.

95 Baby Sister Update: Coda #2

[Glen was Joyce's first husband. They were married for about 4 years, split up because the spark was gone, but always remained close. As you can read below.]

Tribute from Glen

"I first met Joyce at a happy hour in the bar section of a Mexican restaurant in Columbus, Ohio, when she walked up to me and started talking. My initial thought was that she had mistaken me for my twin brother, Stan;he and I both lived in Columbus, and it wasn't unusual for people to mix up the two of us. But no, she didn't know Stan; she just thought I looked like someone she might want to talk to. Within minutes I felt as though we were friends, and just as quickly she introduced me to Paul and Laura, two other friends of hers who had come to the happy hour. Joyce and I were both in our twenties at the time; I was a first-year resident in obstetrics and gynecology. I had been on call the night before, and although I had intended only to grab a beer and some nachos before going home and crashing, I was suddenly no longer tired.

Going to that happy hour changed the course of my life. Joyce and I quickly became almost inseparable, and we got married one year later. Although the marriage didn't last, our friendship did, even through our divorce, in large part simply because Joyce was such a kind person. While other separating couples quarrel over who gets what, she tried to give me one thing after another, and I tried to do the same for her. Now, more than two decades later, I still have most of the things she gave me, and they're a welcome reminder of the time we spent together.

I had many firsts with Joyce, including a first marriage, first house, first cruise, first trip to Asia, and a first surprise birthday party (it was a complete surprise). She also introduced me to most of her friends, a wide range of kind and interesting people, some of whom have become my lifelong friends. And she gave me my first dog. It wasn't one I expected, and it wasn't one I wanted, but in retrospect she knew better than I did what I wanted, and needed. It was a miniature schnauzer she'd rescued from a kennel after its owner had passed away. Soon that dog owned a big part of my heart. Then we got a second one, also a miniature schnauzer. I now live with three small dogs and can't imagine life without them.

In addition to connecting me with dogs, Joyce taught me how to ski. I had never been downhill skiing before I met her, and she showed remarkable patience, going to the bunny hill with me and helping me stand up whenever I fell. Eventually I improved enough to take lessons with her, and we skied on all of the hills together. I never would have done any of that without her.

Joyce was also in large part responsible for the career path I took, beginning when I left my residency program. That ultimately led me to L, to whom I've now been married for more than fifteen years.

One might think that Joyce's effects on my professional life, my personal life, and my overall outlook on life encompass everything that any individual could possibly do to affect another person, but in addition to all that, she served as a role model during her terminal illness. Her perseverance in the face of insurmountable adversity provided a model of courage that I can only hope someday to emulate. I wish her life had been longer - much longer - but she achieved more than she realized and likely more than any of us realize. I miss her every day, and I know many others feel the same way. I'm grateful for the time we spent together, and that I was able to visit her this past year, and I'm grateful for the conversations we had over the phone, even when she lost the ability to say more than a few words.

Perhaps the best we can hope for in the end is to love and be loved and to leave behind cherished memories. If those are goals in life, Joyce certainly achieved all three."

And here I thought I was done with dusty rooms....

My roommate in college was an engineering major - for his first two weeks - then a psychology major. As a result, to help him out, I participated in several psychology "experiments."

In one such, while we were waiting to be called for the "experiment," one guy started defacing a library book by writing in it.

Now, I'm not as stupid as I look, and I instantly realized that this WAS the fucking experiment, so I grabbed his book and made as though I was about to rip the pages out of it.

The "researchers" burst into the room. End of experiment.

Also, the last time I was asked to participate.

No idea. When I was in college (early aughts), my prof of Japanese history went there frequently. She said the only cultural difference she saw between 1978 and then was that there were more homeless people but otherwise everything was exactly the same.
The Japanese defend their culture. They also seem to be legitimately xenophobic and a lot of them are quite racist. They go further than they need to but "Japan" will likely always be Japan, even if there are fewer of them by far due to their birth rate.

235 Ah shit.

Try again.

NSDAP manifesto:

[s/]We want all Germans to live in a "Greater Germany" [2]

We want Germany to be treated the same as other nations, and we want the peace treaties of Versailles to be cancelled.

We want land and territory (colonies) to feed our people and to settle our surplus population.

Only Germans may be citizens of the Germany. Only those of the German races may be members of the nation, their religion does not matter. No Jew may be a citizen.[3]

Non-citizens may live in Germany, but there will be special laws for foreigners living in Germany.[4]

Only citizens can vote for parliament and councils, or vote on laws. Everyone who works for the German government, a state government or even a small village must be a citizen of Germany. We will stop giving people jobs because of the political party they are in, only the best people should get a job.

We think that the government's first job is to make sure every citizen has a job and enough to eat. If the government cannot do this, people who are not citizens should be made to leave Germany.

No-one who is not of a German-race should be allowed to live in Germany. We want anyone who is not of a German-race who started living in Germany after 2 August 1914 to leave the country.

All citizens shall have equal rights and duties.

Every citizen should have a job. Their work should not be selfish, but help everyone. Therefore we say
No one should live off money from rents or other income unless they have worked for that money.
So many people die or lose their property in a war, it is wrong for other people to make money from the war.
Anyone who made money from the war should have all that money taken away.

We want all very big corporations to be owned by the government.

Big industrial companies should share their profits with the workers.

We want old age pensions to be paid.

We want to create a healthy middle class to split up big department stores, and let small traders rent space inside them, to make State and town governments try to buy from small traders.

We want to change the way land is owned. We also want a law to take over land if the country needs it, without the government having to pay for it; to abolish ground rent; and to prohibit land speculation (buying land just to sell to someone else for more money).
Crimes against the common interest must be punished with death.

We want the Roman law system changed for the German common law system.

We want to change the system of schools and education, so that every hard-working German can have the chance of higher education.

What is taught should concentrate on practical things
Schools should teach civic affairs, so that children can become good citizens.
If poor parent cannot afford to pay the government should pay for education.

The State must protect health standards by
protecting mothers and infants, stopping children from working, making a law for compulsory gymnastics and sports, and supporting sports clubs for young men.

We want to get rid of the old army and replace it with a people's army that would look after the ordinary people, not just the rich officer-class

We want the law to stop politicians from being anti-German, and newspapers from writing about them. To make a German national press we demand: that all editors of, and writers in the German language, newspapers are members of the nation (of a German race); Foreign newspapers need permission from the government. They must not be printed in the German language; Non-Germans cannot own or control German newspapers. any non German who does own or control a newspaper will be made to leave Germany, and the newspaper closed down, Newspapers which criticise the country or the government are not allowed.
Art and books which support foreign ideas, should be banned.

We want to allow all religions in the State, unless they offend the moral feelings of the German race. The NSDAP is Christian, but does not belong to any denomination. The NSDAP will fight the Jewish self-interest spirit, and believes that our nation will be strongest only if everyone puts the common interest before self-interest.

We will create a strong central government for the Reich; give Parliament control over the entire government and its organizations; form groups based on class and job to carry out the laws in the various German states.

----

With these deletions, and mutatis mutandis, this could be the platform of the Democrat Party.

Incidentally, that peanut story was just something Alan Young, the actor who played Wilbur (he died in 2016 in his 90s), made up for a joke. They wanted to keep the actual details quiet.

They initially used a piece of nylon thread. It wouldn't be visible on camera, and they'd just pull it to make his lips move.

The horse that "played" Mr. Ed was named Bamboo Harvester, and he was pretty smart, and learned to move his lips like that on his own, on cue.

Happened during the migrant crisis in Germany. There were land grabs by the govt. for housing. The owners sued, the govt said go ahead, by the time this winds through the courts it'll be too late. We are paying you nothing either. The police refused to help. Of course, they were getting beat in the tent cities and couldn't maintain order anyway. Obviously I'm paraphrasing...it was in their papers. The law works, until it doesn't. Kind of like what is going on here with illegal immigration, the FBI, the Resistance.

Bamboo Harvester really liked Alan Young. The trainers would yell at him to get him to do what they wanted him to. But Alan Young, of course, was playing Wilbur.

So from the horses perspective, he had these guys yelling at him, but there was this one nice man who would talk to him and be nice. So, it got to be that anytime they'd yell at him, the horse would just go over to Alan Young.

Young would go see the horse all the time until the horse's death in 1970. Officially Bamboo Harvester was euthanized, but Young claims it was an accidental overdose of tranquilizer.

Welch reduced the GE payroll by something like 80,000-100,000 people (not counting divestitures, IIRC) and by the time he left 40% of the portfolio was in financial services.
Immelt was a bad CEO but he also left with giant real estate and financial services portfolio just in time for a pair of recessions. The misbehavior of GE Capital and other financial arms left them pretty hard up during the Global Financial Crisis, and the financial services wings had a decade to fester under Immelt. He didn't own the structure of the GE he inherited, but a lot of the existential danger GE faced during the GFC was a result of risk accumulated on his watch.

Financialization of assets is a different story, but remember - Welch selected Immelt over Wendt precisely BECAUSE he want to steer GE back away from financial services, because he realized it was overshadowing the rest of the business.

It just turned the Immelt was an ass-kissing dumpster-fire of an executive.

But if you ladies want your breasticles to look larger in the selfies, find the wee lads with small hands for the gropeage, right?

It reminds of a joke Brezhnev would tell about succeeding Khrushchev. He said that Nikita gave him two sealed envelopes, and instructed himto open the first one the first time he ran into trouble, and to open the second one the next time.

The first letter read "Blame me."

The second read "Write two letters."

Interest rates in a nice, graceful down trend for about 30 years helps with that a lot. Zero is a hard mistress, though, and it has no choice but to reverse. Keep in mind that most executives in the business now have never known anything *but* declining cost of capital for their entire management or executive careers.

Interest rates moving into a secular increase is going to expose a lot, and we'll see who is swimming naked.
Hint: Most of them. It is going to be very disruptive but also very cleansing.

Lipstick. Always. They look like Kbdabear specimens.

That reminds of a funny SNL sketch back in the '90s or so. Rachel Dratch was in the cast. It was a bunch of frat boys who managed to rub a lamp and get a genie to come and grant them a wish.

One piped up and said, "We want to see a couple of real lesbians going at it!'

He got his wish. A pair in flannel, looking like Rosie O'Donnell and Lena Dunham. Rachel Dratch was one of them.

One told the other how romantic the hair on her chin looked shimmering in the moon light.

The Fed's favorite word is "gradual" and they've been holding that line very consistently and adhering to it. We'd better get that deficit under control.

Over the past year, I have seen the rate on the 4-week Bills that I hold (better interest than a bank savings account, and still quite liquid) climb about a full percentage point.

"Deficits don't matter" was always a lie, and it's about to be exposed for that if we don't contain the problem post haste.

Assuming the winning bidder bites off more than they can chew, and fail in the doing, here's what it means.

If it's Disney, not only does the Mouse take a stake to the heart, but ABC and their Fake News enterprise is suddenly rudderless and open to takeover by raiders such as Trump News.... well, pity he can't actually, but you get the idea?

If it's Comcast and they choke on it?

Who cares?

They're all libtard media.

Let the deal SAIL through, no matter the winning bid.

In the end, even if another libtard company buys the rotting corpse, we all win in the chortle and gloating department.

Yea, all these guys know is innovation. They credit themselves, but it is really the technology improvements. The running of a day to day business with existing product lines that aren't the new thing is something they don't know.

So what are they doing? They are branching into social engineering and controlling what people see and believe and do. They feel like the annointed ones. The truth is, except for Gates and Jobs and a few others, they were just born at the right time.
There is no way their egos will allow them to see that.

So now what happens? We don't know. 1984, or a pushback and the oligarchies are broken up and no more Big Brother. I don't know. Tech and govt. have the same interests in controlling people.

It wouldn't take much hostility from the government to destroy Google (protection of private data) or Amazon (updating anti-monopoly legislation ).
I wonder if part of the union of the tech giants and the left is the recognition of this on the part of the latter.

Imagine a right leaning Jeff Bezos faced with a President Clinton...

489 411 If Disney pulls off its Fox acquisition, it is going to be Pyrrhic victory. They're bidding 130% of their annual revenue for it. Even if Comcast decides to outbid them (and they might not have to, since Comcast is making a cash offer instead of Disney's cash-and-stock offer), they're bidding ~90% of their revenue for it. Still awfully expensive, but it might be survivable for Comcast. It's reckless for Disney.

Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at June 20, 2018 11:57 PM (hYcqw)

Labor camps are a 100% losing proposition. Period.

The survivors write the books, and the camps never fare well therein.

The workers sabotage anything and everything possible.

The optics are horrible, and the FACTS are horrible.

The expenses are boggling. Monies that should go to military go to what, herding resentful people like cattle?

NO.

Air Pinochet accounted for fewer than four thousand, IIRC.

And was enough to break the back of the opposition.

You either DO or DO not. KILL or KILL NOT.

"Camps", per the last century, prove to be the evidence of evil, legitimate POW camps notwithstanding.

I feel ya, Brother Palp....but on that one, dial back the enthusiasm meter to oh, say.... ZERO?

The ones in Spain were also apparently a very fractious lot. Even though they were technically all fighting against Franco, the Soviet-backed elements had started purging their "allies". And in a thread elsewhere on the subject of the Spanish Civil War, there was general agreement by those with more knowledge of the subject than I when I suggested that if the Republicans had beaten Franco, it likely wouldn't have marked the end of the fighting as the "victors" would have promptly turned on each other.

-------------------------

IIRC, the Disney bid is a mix of stock options and other stuff, so it's not purely cash. Presumably the stock options would take some of the sting out of the cost if the acquisition didn't pay off. But unless Disney has submitted a new bid that I didn't hear about, it likely doesn't matter right now since Comcast's bid was not only in cash, but also higher than Disney's.

On the topic, one of the things that I found a bit odd about the attempt to acquire Fox by Disney was that the sale didn't include Fox Sports. ESPN's slipping right now, and Fox Sports represents the only real competition that ESPN has. I would have thought that Disney would try and shut down that particular bit of competition. But apparently they did not.

--------------------

This. Fox has a huge library of movies and television shows. Among the former are the original Star Wars, and numerous movies based off of Marvel properties. Disney no doubt in particular wants the specific movies I listed. But they also almost certainly want to get their hands on Fox's catalogue of stuff so that they can include shows like The Simpsons on the new streaming service when it launches.

That will also likely allow them to deny those same shows and movies to competitor Netflix.

That's the idea. Which (sort of) made sense for Apple when they bought Beats from Dr. Dre and Johnny Iovine for $3b. But this is $70b+.

Unless they plan to cultivate Fox as a content producer in a big fat way (and they don't and can't), this is an enormous amount of wasted cash. Brotha Mannix thinks it's a "serious gamble," but I call it a sucker's bet. For whoever does it.

One 16 oz beer while cooking and with dinner. Much of which often finds it's way into the skillet or baking dish.

Three or four ounces of straight bourbon, rocks glass, sipped 'tween (generally) 10 pm and midnight/1 am.

Soft warm glow to send me to sleep.

Not exactly. He knew about it, but stayed out of it. He didn't get involved with it, but he also didn't report it to the authorities. Understandably, the fact that he knew about it and didn't report it was enough to cause Hitler to order his suicide.

-----------------------------------
Also, Rommel was never a member of the NSDAP.
-----------------------------------

He wasn't, and clashed with the NSDAP on at least one occasion. However, it's also important to be aware that at the start of World War 2, he was the commander of the unit charged with escorting and protecting Hitler. He didn't stay there past the defeat of Poland, but anyone who wants to trash Rommel will bring it up. His command of the 7th Panzer Division during the Battle of France was no doubt at least in part due to Hitler, who apparently liked him (which is why Hitler had placed him in the escort unit).

607 A lot of historians are not sure if Rommel was directly involved in the plot to kill Hitler, although most agree that he had heard of the plot. He was a strong supporter of the dictator, and very patriotic. IIRC, he was implicated by a German staff officer who tried to commit suicide by putting a bullet in his brain when the plot failed and he failed as well. The Gestapo and SS interrogators were not exactly kind to him. On an related note, I came across a book written by Manfred Rommel on his father's campaigns in North Africa, complete with fold out water color drawings of the battles. Sadly, I lent it to an acquaintance who absconded with it to Missouri, never to be seen again. It was a very good book and I wish I still had it.

Hitler took Crete with airborne troops, he never tried it with Malta. It would have relieved tremendous pressure on the Afrika Corps.

Posted by: platypus, gg channel at June 21, 2018 02:45 AM (mNJBC)

624 Top of my head, but, Rommel's personal positions have been reconsidered several times, and it looks like that aspect will not be resolved. That's how history works. I have my own prejudices about him.

He did not write the book that Patton is depicted as reading. The hot shot on tank attack was Heinz Guderian, and Rommel was more or less one of his disciples. Rommel wrote a book on, of all the damn things, infantry tactics. And his great armor success in North Africa was not so much in attack, but in laying traps to destroy British armor. He had superior anti-tank guns. At that point, he didn't have a world-beating tank -- although what the Brits had, early on, was slow on purpose because it was supposed to support infantry.

The point is well-taken, though: for grownups, it's no big deal to admit that this general was on the other side, yet still could speak wisdom. Churchill said so. We have a special kind of new "thinker" now, though, and those people like to think they only take advice from those they already agree with. It's fun to watch them get up-ended, but they do not learn from this.

Malta would have been a much harder objective than Crete.
But still doable. During the height of the siege, the Brits sent something like fourteen cargo ships escorted by a Royal Navy carrier and a bunch of escorts. Only something like three or four made it through. It was enough to keep Malta fighting.

Posted by: Old Blue at June 21, 2018 02:53 AM (gEvQ8)

631 I guess that Crete was such an expensive victory for the German paratroopers that their tacticians assumed no one would ever do that again. And, as thin as we have always known the RAF and Royal Navy were stretched, the Germans were on even flimsier ground.

The Italians started the North Africa war, without German approval; the Brits counter-attacked with an improvised force and just cleaned their clock. "Poor" Rommel was sent in to save what he could, not to take Egypt. As he succeeded, home staff got big ideas. This is a recurring German flaw.

645 The Italian fleet was the wonder of the world from the mid-20's right up until the Brits Pearl-Harbor'd them at Taranto with those bloody slow Faery Swordfish. As a fleet, they were finished right then. They were devoted to the concept of the battle cruiser, a ship that could dish out more than it could take, and relied on speed and agility to stay alive. Does not work in port.

But they were resourceful maritime guerillas. They'd sunk an Austro-Hungarian dreadnought in WWI with human torpedoes, and got damned good at it. They had a secret base on a tiny isle in the west Med, sank a British battleship at Alexandria with just a couple of frogmen and a mini-sub.

There's no doubt that Emilio Largo was based on their commander. Brave to the point of foolhardiness, and they may have had some operations against Malta. I'd be surprised if they didn't.

Akin to how one of the greatest generals in American History is now considered truly evil and an unperson, Bobby Lee, not to be spoken highly of in polite (proggie) society. Chancellorsville was a great tactical victory, even if he lost Stonewall Jackson due to friendly fire. That Lee could fend off Grant for as long as he did was astounding. Lee wrote the book on 'doing more with less for a long period of time'.
