The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

The nation which can prefer disgrace to danger is prepared for a master and deserves one. Alexander Hamilton

Quote II

The secret of genius is to carry the spirit of the child into old age, which means never losing your enthusiasm. Aldous Huxley

Quote III

Continuous effort - not strength or intelligence - is the key to unlocking our potential. Winston Churchill

Quote IV

We all know that overeating causes more deaths than drugs do. If it’s in principle OK for the government to say you must not consume drugs because they’ll do you harm, why isn’t it all right to say you must not eat too much because you’ll do harm? Why isn’t it all right to say you must not try to go in for skydiving because you’re likely to die? Why isn’t it all right to say, “Oh, skiing, that’s no good, that’s a very dangerous sport, you’ll hurt yourself”? Where do you draw the line? Milton Friedman

They (Progtards) don't need any encouragement.

Unfettered liberalism and tourism doesn't go hand in hand.

"The streets are filthy. There's trash everywhere. It's disgusting," Joe D'Alessandro, president of S.F. Travel told the Chronicle's Heather Knight in April. "I've never seen any other city like this — the homelessness, dirty streets, drug use on the streets, smash-and-grabs."

The city, which hands out up to 4.8 million syringes each year, has struggled to figure out how to keep streets clean and safe for residents, while accommodating a growing homeless population and longstanding HIV and Hepatitis C epidemics. There are roughly 16,000 residents in San Francisco with HIV, and 13,000 with Hep C.

Sad.

Quite the business model or not.

This past May, in order to pump up its new initial coin offering, or ICO, social media giant ASKfm sponsored four experienced Ukrainian climbers to scale Mount Everest and leave behind a wallet containing one million ASKT coins that the company valued at $50,000.

The PR campaign challenged others to make the climb and retrieve the wallet, “if they are brave enough.” A promotional video was then posted on YouTube, in order to inflate the ICO “to the Moon” from the tallest place on Earth. What ASKfm forgot to mention, as it was encouraging others to make the climb, was that a man died during the publicity stunt.

A serious question, when was the last time Biff Kristol, Erick Erickson, Kevin D. Williamson, Et al. sided with you?

I guess I should just be quiet and let the liberal establishment continue to attack President Trump for refusing to submit to the demands of a bunch of foreigners. As Napoleon warned, perhaps apocryphally but accurately, never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake. And it is crazy to think that the American people are going to punish a president who sides with them over that schnitzel-snarfing frau, Monsieur Les Eyebrows, and the rest of the globalist twits. Oh, and let’s not even get started on how they can’t help but manufacture reasons why Trump shouldn’t take a chance on avoiding a war that would lead to thousands of Normal American families burying sons and daughters. Yeah, shaking Rocket Man’s hand is pretty much Munich 2: The EnNorkening.

The ONT Musical Interlude

June 19, 2013, Slim Whitman the American country music and western music singer/songwriter and instrumentalist died aged 90. Known for his yodeling abilities and his smooth high octave falsetto, he sold in excess of 120 million records during his career. Michael Jackson cited Whitman as one of his ten favorite vocalists and Beatle George Harrison cited Whitman as an early influence. Paul McCartney credited a poster of Whitman with giving him the idea of playing his guitar left-handed with his guitar strung the opposite way to a right-handed player's. via thisdayinmusic.com

No word on the admiration from Francis Rossi of Status Quo or Yoko or Tanya.

A funny thing when scanning for scientific stories the MSM wasn't shouting out Antarctica is making and gaining ice.

Is Antarctica melting or is it gaining ice? A recent paper claims Antarctica’s net ice loss has dramatically increased in recent years, but forthcoming research will challenge that claim.

NASA glaciologist Jay Zwally first challenged the “consensus” on Antarctica in 2015 when he published a paper showing ice sheet growth in eastern Antarctica outweighed the losses in the western ice sheet.

A good thing? Or just another invasion of your privacy? Apple iOS12 automatically to give your location to 911 centers.

We already know that iOS 12 will include new features like improved performance, a focus on digital wellness, and Memoji, and now Apple has revealed another significant new feature that's coming with the update to iOS 12.

With iOS 12, iPhone owners will be able to automatically share their location data when they dial 911. Apple explains that it'll use RapidSOS's IP-based data pipeline to securely share an iPhone owners HELO (Hybridized Emergency Location) info when 911 call centers. This system will integrate with many 911 call centers' existing software.

The ONT has been quite critical of Elon Musk's Tesla. Is it time for The ONT to give Tesla the benefit of the doubt?

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has accused a Tesla employee of "quite extensive and damaging sabotage to our operations," according to an email obtained by CNBC. In the all-hands email to Tesla staff, Musk wrote that the employee had made "direct code changes" to the company's production systems, as well as exporting "large amounts" of Tesla's data to unknown third parties.

According to Musk's email, the unnamed employee claimed he had become disgruntled after failing to receive a promotion. However, the Tesla CEO also suggested the alleged saboteur could have been working with short sellers, oil and gas companies—whom he described as "sometimes not super nice"—or "the multitude of big gas/diesel car company competitors." Of this last group, Musk reminded his employees that, since the traditional OEMs have been known to cheat emissions tests, "maybe they're willing to cheat in other ways."

Starting a business is difficult. Having that business become a success takes brains, stamina, a little luck and a well thought out business plan. Hmmmm, what went wrong here?

A HOST OF ENVIRONMENTAL AND internal forces can cause an all-you-can-eat restaurant to go bankrupt, including waning popularity and rent hikes. But ceasing operations because people ate too much food is a more unusual cause for closure.

That’s what happened to Jiamener, an all-you-can-eat hot pot restaurant in Chengdu, located in China’s Sichuan province. The trouble started earlier this month, the South China Morning Post reports, when the restaurant launched a promotion that allowed guests to pay 120 yuan ($19) to eat as much hot pot as they could stomach for a whole month.

A guide to the FBI Spy Gate debacle.

The FBI is many things to many people, but seen from the inside where I spent my career as an FBI agent, most of all it is a bureaucracy. The evident abuses of the vast investigatory powers of the Bureau to surveil the campaign of Donald Trump has left a paper and electronic trail as it jumped through the many procedural hoops required for Spygate to unfold.

Based on a clue from the Strzok-Page texts and my understanding of the rules the FBI has to play by, it is possible to piece together a picture of how and why surveillance of the Trump campaign probably unfolded. But in order to understand what happened, we'll need to explore the nature of FBI investigations, because the type of investigation controls, to some extent, the type of investigative techniques that are authorized. All this is set out in detail in the Attorney General Guidelines For Domestic FBI Operations (AGG) and the FBI Domestic Investigations And Operations Guide (DIOG).

Basically, there are three types of FBI investigations that involve opening an investigative case file:

We hear of all these retired FBI agents condemning their former employer's actions. For all of this to happen as outlined there were many who kept their mouths shut and looked the other way if they weren't involved in Spy Gate.

As Dave From Texas Tweeted this past weekend when discussing the FBI, "A fish rots from the head........."

The truth hurts, ask Penguin Random House and will get you fired, ask Lionel Shriver.

Drunk on virtue, Penguin Random House no longer regards the company’s raison d’être as the acquisition and dissemination of good books. Rather, the organisation aims to mirror the percentages of minorities in the UK population with statistical precision. Thus from now until 2025, literary excellence will be secondary to ticking all those ethnicity, gender, disability, sexual preference and crap-education boxes. We can safely infer from that email that if an agent submits a manuscript written by a gay transgender Caribbean who dropped out of school at seven and powers around town on a mobility scooter, it will be published, whether or not said manuscript is an incoherent, tedious, meandering and insensible pile of mixed-paper recycling. Good luck with that business model. Publishers may eschew standards, but readers will still have some

In video that was released by Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Office, County Sheriff's Deputy William Wheeler's body cam shows him racing to to assist the young child, named Chaz, who is attempting to cough up whatever object he swallowed.

'It's still in there and I don't know how!' exclaims the Chaz's panicked mom, Victoria Terrill, who was trying to help her son in the incident earlier this month.

22 San Francisco is a shithole third world city. It has gleaming high-rises, lots of rich people, lots of poverty, and no middle class. It smells like piss and they have the most aggressive homeless I have encountered in the United States. If the homeless behaved like that where I live (Denver), they'd be in prison (for now, anyway. Lots of Silicon Valley expats moving in, and I fear they'll bring their culture with them).

And I'll keep being hard on Musk and Tesla. Tesla is a cash furnace being fueled by subsidies and investor credulity. Musk has a reality distortion field around him, so who knows how long his venture has. Tesla is a zero. Someone tampering with the software and auctioning off choice bits to competitors doesn't matter when:
- *Physical* quality control is garbage
- No one has been identified as using Tesla's technology in other marketed electric cars.
Tesla buys its batteries and controllers. The software makes the car run, but software is only one of Tesla's many, many problems. The fact that they haven't figured out the manufacturing yet, lose money on every car and looking at expiring subsidies are probably far greater.

Not just smart phones. All cell phones are two-way radios and *must* communicate with the nearest tower and the next tower (to facilitate signal handoff). That two-way connection must be there to deliver service, and modern cellular networks maintain several connections with the handset to make the service better.

The range of the towers is known, the power levels from the handset are known, and the position of the towers are known. It's just trigonometry to get an approximate (but pretty good) location just by virtue of the fact that it's a radio. It isn't as good as GPS, but your cell provider must know where the handset is to deliver service. Nature of the beast.

86 Tree stump kicked my ass this afternoon - two and a half hours of struggle in the hot sun using all available hand tools - chainsaw, splitting wedges, sledgehammer, shovel, pickaxe/maddock, water bottle, and comfy chair.

What? You have to have a comfy chair at your work site. Like the wooden boat builders of olden times, you need a comfy chair sited where you can see the boat under construction. Sometimes, in the design specs, or during early stages of construction, decisions are made that cause trouble in later stages of construction, and in those case, you have to retreat to the comfy chair where you can contemplate the situation. The wooden boat builders called it 'the moaning chair.'

Several of us did this at such a meeting in NYC, and he sputtered and raged against "big oil" and Detroit and their fossil fuel guzzlers for a couple of minutes. When another like minded investor mentioned that his cars were ultimately powered by evil coal plants, not unicorn farts, he simply walked off the stage.

And Karl Marx of all people, writing about the Coup of Louis Napoleon III that "the first time is a tragedy, the second is farce" but most people are not aware (I know I wasn't) that he was expanding on someone else's comment how great men appear twice, and finished it that the first time is a tragedy and the second a farce since Louis Napoleon was considered a buffoon and a foolish man opposed to his uncle Napoleon Bonaparte.

However, the people who idealize and follow Marx didn't realize where they were taking that meme. With their hands driving history into the inevitability of socialism, they have created the need to add:

Friedman was a purist. I don't think he advocated drug use, he just thought things in general should not be illegal unless and until a person's private choices infringed on the liberties and rights of another.
I think my example with tobacco is clearer. It is arbitrary for government to allow biases against people with risk factors from legal activity and not not allow them for other legal activity. Basically when government gets involved, it makes things worse and less clear.

I have no problem with banning drugs if they are deemed a threat to the populace and it is done democratically But certainly government decisions are often arbitrary and have no consistent logic.

161 The problem with Friedman's comparison between doing drugs and overeating is that it's very possible to die the first time you use a drug like heroin or crack or cocaine--or to overdose even with recreational use. It's very difficult to die eating too many cheeseburgers or pizza in one sitting and the heart disease and diabetes that can follow from chronic overeating and obesity that comes with it usually takes YEARS.

The problem with drugs, and the reason that societies try to restrict them, is not that you might harm yourself. It's that they have negative externalities on the rest of us. Drug addicts committing crimes, feral children, the spread of disease, and social decay. Those do impact you and I, and so there's a legitimate question about how to deal with it. Do we legalize all mind altering substances and then spend a lot more money on police, jails, and CPS services to deal with the impact? Do we outlaw everything? Somewhere between the two? Legalizing everything while simultaneously ending any treatment or welfare programs is as foolish a dream as the libertarians claim about the drug war. It will never happen.

165 > I've read that lesbians actually adore penises...except

You know, you all are being very hetero- and cis-normative here. For example, don't assume Her Grace's lesbians don't have penises. One or both could.

Don't assume genitalia. And just because one or both might have a penis, don't assume the like PIV. That's a heteronormative assumption.

170 I left a comment last night about the rise in suicide rates, particularly among women, and it later occurred to me that it may have seemed a bit callous.

Maybe I should try to explain what I was trying to say a little better.

I'm irked by this push from the Left that, "Oh, women are committing suicide in greater numbers now! We have to Do Something," because I know what that "Something" is. They're going to try to make suicide exclusively a women's issue, just like they've already done with cancer and domestic abuse. They also tried to do this with heart disease, but fortunately that didn't take.

If they get their way, all those resources and support networks out there to help prevent people in general from committing suicide will now be redirected to preventing only women from committing suicide. I view the whole thing as a deliberate push to deny men access to these support structures.

That's the thing that pisses me off about it.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - In Charleston, South Carolina, once a key slave trading port, the City Council has voted to apologize for slavery.

By voice vote, the Charleston City Council on Tuesday approved a resolution denouncing slavery, promising tolerance in the future and proposing an office of racial reconciliation.

The vote coincided with "Juneteenth," a celebration of the end of slavery, and came just two days after the third anniversary of a racist attack by a white man killed nine black members of a Charleston church.

In expressing support, Councilman William Dudley Gregorie compared slavery with the federal immigration policy that has resulted in children being separated from their families.

Councilmen Harry Joseph Griffin and Perry Waring expressed opposition to the resolution. Both said the city needs to focus on economic development.

Pro Tip - there's more than a little bit of Fascist in most people. Most everybody you ever talk to ... if you bother to really get them talking ... has a real damn good idea of how Everything Ought To Be. And they have no qualms whatsoever about using Government to force their vision on everybody around them.

Remember what my man C.S. Lewis said ...

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

So, yeah, I'll just have to keep feeding them canned food from now on. It seems like they do well with one small can in the morning and one in the evening, with dry food available whenever they want it.

I am told, and I am not an expert on this, that it goes back to the end of the 19th century and the struggle between those who sought collective salvation and and saw the federal government as the power that could enforce morality, and the those who looked to liberty. Prohibition comes from the same place.

If you have some states open and some not, you have a trafficking and bootlegging problem. It is always cheaper and easier to have someone else enforce your laws for you, somewhere else, after all.

Researchers at Oregon State University are studying the environmental impact of whey when it is turned into alcohol, as more spirit-makers explore whey-based vodka.

According to OSU, turning leftover whey from the cheese-making process into vodka is far less damaging to the environment than dumping it into a landfill.

OSU researchers say distilling whey to make spirits could be easier and cheaper than turning it into protein powder.

Scientists are also studying the flavor characteristics of different wheys and the spirits they produce.

Yeah, and there also tends to be a fair amount of overreaction. It made waves here when the Nebraska state troopers goofed and said (where they could be overheard) that they were referring to Colorado plates as the "green badge of bravery" or somesuch when they came into Nebraska.

Their state government also sued Colorado in federal court because they said having legal marijuana in a neighboring state put an undue burden on their drug enforcement system.

238 I see drugs (full disclosure, I am in favor of legalization in general, though I am open to debate on it) as a great example of where we could use federalize. I'd like to see all of them descheduled. Let the states decide. Those that want prohibition will have it. Those that don't won't. Those that seek a middle ground will find it. I do not get why this is a federal issue.
Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at June 19, 2018 10:57 PM (hYcqw)

The Feds have to have some involvement in the whole thing due to interstate commerce. If weed is legal in California but illegal in Utah, the question is how do you deal with the transportation from the former to the latter? It's a federal issue, plus you don't necessarily want to end up with Utah Highway Patrol stopping and searching every vehicle that enters the state. At minimum, the Fed Gov should provide guidelines for handling and shipping drugs between states, such as some sort of packaging requirements and possibly a license.

THat's okay, the white, middle class people are moving to Oakland and displacing the black people that they care so much about.

I got into this conversation with my liberal sister in law. "Oh, it's so sad, our friends' adult daughter and her husband both work full time and can't afford the rent in San Francisco. They had to move into a terrible neighborhood in Oakland." Boo Hoo. I asked her if the citizens of California would help bring down the high housing costs by adjusting all overregulation and environmental crap that makes it so difficult and expensive to put up a building.

States do that now over fireworks, guns, etc ... If Item A isn't allowed in State XYZ - don't bring it there.

Nope ... there's not a need to "bring the Feds" into this. Let the States decide. And probably future residents.

The payment-clearance problem would be solved by simple descheduling. It isn't federally illegal any more at that point.
Stopping every car would be one helluva 4th amendment problem, as Nebraska learned (they didn't pursue it) - but someone would definitely have to fight it all the way up.
There would need to be some regulatory structure for shipments, since the package could transit a non-legal state. There would need to be some federal involvement in all likelihood, but ultimately, I'd like to see this power devolved to the states where it belongs.

Make cheeseburgers or pizza illegal, and the black market will do its best to find a way to concentrate them enough to make them dangerous in one sitting. I cannot guess how they will do it, but I would have never guessed crack cocaine would be invented, either. And the longer we keep coca (or opium, or whatever) illegal, the more industrious the black market will get at making the drug more dangerous.

The market forces at work in a black market are very different from the forces at work in a legal market.

279 I am told, and I am not an expert on this, that it goes back to the end of the 19th century and the struggle between those who sought collective salvation and and saw the federal government as the power that could enforce morality, and the those who looked to liberty. Prohibition comes from the same place.

Sounds like bullshit to me. The temperance movement (and ultimately Prohibition) was the result of the massive social changes that were brought about by the industrial revolution. You saw a massive migration of people from small agricultural communities to the big cities. This had several effects. First, the social cohesion that was found in small communities was lost. Second, industrialization made alcohol available in massive quantities like never before. Third, you had a lot more people in close proximity, including drunks. Whereas before you might have a small town with one or two drunks who could be dealt with by the community (give them work as laborers, pay their wives or extend credit where needed) now the social support systems were overwhelmed or non-existent. Meanwhile, the increased availability of alcohol on a regular basis created more problems among the population in general. People weren't getting drunk on special occasions, but could get sloshed any night of the week if they chose. Alcohol also went hand in hand with other social problems, such as gambling and prostitution.

Essentially the early temperance movement could be summed up as, "Stop drinking your wife and kids into the poor-house!" It was only when they came to believe that had failed that prohibition took off.

Nope. Though I don't think they exist anymore, there used to be many "dry" counties, counties that had banned alcohol. It was up to those counties that wanted to have a ban to enforce their ban.

Nobody outside of those counties had to spend one second of time worrying about the problems of law enforcement in those counties in enforcing those bans. They wanted to ban alcohol, that was their prerogative, but the rest of the country could just go about their own business.

an Austrian would tell you they are exactly the same: volume, profit per unit and demand.

fun fact, a review of the cost of goods coming through the Union blockade during the Civil war found that items like lace and ribbons actually were fairly low. There was a demand for them, they were low volume and high profit, and so such a volume was imported that it actually suppressed the market.

This is generally the same for all black markets, just that the additional cost of doing business are the results of being caught.

295 125 The problem with Friedman's comparison between doing drugs and overeating is that it's very possible to die the first time you use a drug like heroin or crack or cocaine--or to overdose even with recreational use. It's very difficult to die eating too many cheeseburgers or pizza in one sitting and the heart disease and diabetes that can follow from chronic overeating and obesity that comes with it usually takes YEARS.

That's one difference.
There's another.

You ever heard of someone downing a few burgers and getting in a brawl? Or smoking a pack of cigarettes, going home, and beating his wife?
Eating a whole cheesecake and running over a pedestrian?

There are certain substances that, when abused, make you more dangerous to OTHERS.

I'm not arguing for or against drug laws, BTW.

296 I don't approve of legalized marijuana, but I kind of feel like that genie is out of the bottle now, and there's no putting him back in.

I'm now hoping to see more states legalize it, just to take some of that pressure off the real estate market here in the Denver area. I was extremely fortunate to get my condo when I did, because it only took a few months for its estimated value (according to Redfin) to rise above my price range.

I have co-workers who want to become homeowners in the near future, and I'll really feel bad for them if the local market continues on this path. It's just ridiculous!

And the biggest of those costs is violence and murder. When you can't adjudicate your differences in court, you do it with a gun. Drugs have negative externalities. 317 an Austrian would tell you they are exactly the same: volume, profit per unit and demand.

Fair enough; I was talking about the second-order effects that involve concentration to evade interdiction (volume must be decreased to increase the chance of getting through the blockade) and then adulteration once through the blockade (volume must be increased to make a profit). Demand, also, has different second-order effects, since customer dissatisfaction must be handled differently than in a legal market.

This generally combines to make illegal drugs more dangerous the longer they are illegal; and the illegal drug market more violent the longer they are illegal.

320 What? You have to have a comfy chair at your work site. Like the wooden boat builders of olden times, you need a comfy chair sited where you can see the boat under construction. Sometimes, in the design specs, or during early stages of construction, decisions are made that cause trouble in later stages of construction, and in those case, you have to retreat to the comfy chair where you can contemplate the situation. The wooden boat builders called it 'the moaning chair.'

This is soooo true! Time spent thoughtfully contemplating one's next move in an ongoing struggle is never wasted time. Sometimes, you will go ahead and do the thing that was first to come to mind, but often enough, you will have an epiphany, and say to yourself, "Self, there's a better way to do this, that gets the job done faster and safer, and better." And those breakthroughs only come to those who stop and put on their thinking caps.

Here at stately Peon Manor, I was on/off the tractor all afternoon, moving parts engines from the barn to the truck box at the bottom of my lot. I spent a lot of time sitting on the tractor, gaming out the moves to get the most shit moved for the least expenditure of Peon muscle power. Climbing into and out of the tractor seat is a chore, especially when you have already done it 20 times today.

Like the picture up top. I'm partial to anything that shows our flag in a positive manner.
We fly a flag 24/7 at our house, in accord with flag protocol, just as my father did.
It is done to honor the country and is a tradition stretching back for as long as we have record--there is a picture of a flag flying at every house.
It's also a reminder that defending the country does not always entail shouldering a rifle. There's a civic side that too often is overlooked because it isn't bold and dramatic--just requires patience.

It is where you and I CAN make a difference, minuscule though it nay seem.

supply and demand ... well sure, those are market forces. But in a free country with law enforcement, the "forces" are government (ideally not corrupt). But in the black market of drugs or sex, the competition can kill you to gain market share.

Sure, that is "a market force" but a rather impossible to build an economic system based on it. The "black market" is ruled by he who is most ruthless and cunning, not necessarily the better product or things more generally considered to be "economics". imo The other supply/demand thingy is a lesser factor than which gang runs the neighborhood.

I am not an expert on this, and only brushed over it. Some of what I have read is suspect, other bits are probably slanted.
The analysis I read was about the growth of the feeling that this was something a government had to deal with and not churches or communities.

And that had to overcome the idea that it was possible to enforce morality (this comes from some of the New England states as founded) and that to failure for individuals to act morally hurt the rest (which is a collective salvation idea, which pops its head up in the religious and social movements in the later 1800's)

All along since the enlightenment there had been arguments about moral behavior and the whole beer vs evil spirits, but the idea that this was a government thing was the demented policies of those insane Europeans like Bismarck and Louis Napoleon III!

I am not defending legalized drugs here either because I don't support them. But someone like Friedman would likely argue that the drugs in the cases you mentioned were used in the wrong place. What if the person only smoked dope at home and did not drive or get in fights? Should that be a crime?

And yes I realize society does not work that way. There are way too many idiots for people to make private decisions that affect no one else. It is an interesting issue though, because if people COULD act responsibly, it would be more difficult to come up with reasons for bans . I have said before that so many of our problems, including gun crime etc are societal problems, the problem is society, the bans are just ways to try to mitigate the harm.

406 Fair enough; I was talking about the second-order
effects that involve concentration to evade interdiction (volume must be
decreased to increase the chance of getting through the blockade) and
then adulteration once through the blockade (volume must be increased to
make a profit). Demand, also, has different second-order effects, since
customer dissatisfaction must be handled differently than in a legal
market.

This generally combines to make illegal drugs more dangerous the
longer they are illegal; and the illegal drug market more violent the
longer they are illegal.
Posted by: Stephen Price Blair at June 19, 2018 11:24 PM (2lndx)

One was some woman devastated by finding grandpa's (betamax) porn stash.

442 All the scorn heaped on SF is well deserved.
Downtown is a mess.
We pay the homeless to be homeless, give them needles, meals, toilets (not enough) everything.
No one running for mayor deserved my vote, they all had similar positions on sanctuary city status, taxation, administration, you could have voted for any of them and have enjoyed the same outcome.
We have a skyscraper that is off kilter and sinking in to the sidewalk.
The homeless can be divided roughly in to 3 types, those truly down on their luck, those who enjoy the lifestyle or are insane (same thing) and those who are wanted by the law.
My block is being targeted by burglars and they seem to know exactly when no one is home, and they do it broad daylight. I started putting cameras everywhere, even in my car.
Never a dull moment here, let me tell you.

I think certain ideas appeal to certain types of people because it fits with how they think. People who are somewhat anti-social/misathropic, or just bad at human interaction, tend to like the philosophy of "leave me completely alone" because they underestimate how human beings act. They tend to overestimate the rationality of the average person. Likewise, a lot of progressives fall for stupid ideas because they are complex and seemingly esoteric, which makes the progressives feel like they are smarter than the rest of us.

One was some woman devastated by finding grandpa's (betamax) porn stash.

And some of them were pretty bad. One woman found a diary of her mother's that detailed when she was born. THe mother didn't want the child and referred to her as "It". "It was born today", and "They've named It for me."

I remember reading an advice column where a reader had discovered that her late parents were swingers. Apparently the long-time family friends were more than just friends, and now were pushing to have a continued relationship with the woman, and threatening to reveal everything.

Some other nice applications, with mostly the same considerations, sure.

But a consumer car, to drive around the vast (by world standards) US? Why? What's the point?

I'm just not bothering with the quintessentially idiotic "environmental" crap, since there is no "problem" (AGW) to worry about, and producing these cars and the power to run them equals or exceeds the "environmental impact" (itself a 95% false concept).

555 We also own several mattocks, and at this juncture I am proud to say I have not had to use one in several years.
--Stringer Davis

I'm digging up stumps out of boredom, and cabin fever. I'm doing it for the exercise and as a reason to get outside after a long winter. I'll be doing it for the rest of my life, probably. I'm working on number seven for this season and honestly, don't remember how many I've dug up in previous years. I have more than twenty yet to dig up - and rocks. One summer I was digging up big rocks that were too heavy to pick up and had to be levered out of the ground with 2x6 lumber and blocking.

It is the type of job where you don't think about completion. You break it down into the next swing of the tool, the next chunk of stump you can break off. If you don't get it today, you work on it again tomorrow.

This whole thing started when I bought this place. There were trees growing right up to the house, and several large trees were leaning toward, and looming over the building. When the day arrived that they would fall, it would be on to the house, so I had them removed since I didn't have the machinery nor the skill to do it myself. A neighbor, who was in the business, cleared them out and took out trees with commercial value. Then I started clearing the underbrush, one stick at a time, and you had to dig up the root, or the root would just send up another stick. I broke three shovels; one shovel head split because I was using it to cut roots, two shovel handles using the shovel as a lever.

I can appreciate what pioneer families had to do back in the old days. We don't know just how lucky we have it.

Seventeen years I've been working on it, a little at a time, and there will still be the leveling off of the rough terrain - filling in sinkholes, and digging down the hills because the previous owner never bothered to put a final grade on the lot.

OH, and the previous owner planted a small shrub in the front yard, for decoration, and that small shrub is now a cedar tree brushing up against the high voltage distribution line that runs across the property.

I'll have to take the top out of that tree this year; don't want to cut it down completely.

By the time I get the lot landscaped, the house will have rotted away and fallen down, 'cuz I don't have the money for major repairs, or the physical strength to make those repairs myself.

It passes the time and gets me off the 'net. What else am I going to do? Gotta do something.

Owned this here house since '08 to the present.

To one and all who proclaim that a boat is a hole in the water into which one pours money.

You're suckers.

Each and every one of you.

Suckers.

The maintenance demands of my sloop were but a small fraction of the cost of keeping house here not two miles from where Hurricane Ike tore the New Dawn from her final berth, to her demise.

I've had to fight, kill and defeat here attacks by termites, as well as repairing the massive damage inflicted by the same.

I've had to remove and replace every not inconsiderable length of 2" sanitary drain, because the original installation was to put it mildly, sub par.

And now I'm nearing final touches on the replacement of the entire front porch's railings, stairs stair railings, also residual damage from Ike from '08.

Oh, and the replacement of every splinter of the entire back porch awaits my tender ministrations.

FUCK house maintenance.

I wanna move back onto a boat.

I've discarded every battery powered tool in the battery.

Pun, intended.

All of my power tools are corded.

I've used the hell out of Milwaukee and DeWalt cordless.

Sold all the useless hulks of tools with un-rechargeable batteries, soon thereafter.

Besides. My B&D corded 3/8 drill has the best low speed trigger control of any power drill, ever.

We're talking down to 1/4 RPM or less, if you have the finesse to do so.

And at full trigger, it'll break your wrist if the bit hangs in the work.

That "let it go" reflex has to fire in light speed, or else.

The front porch project has resulted in over three gallons of contained sawdust.

I'm not sayin' batteries couldn't get it done.

But I'm rapidly moving between multiple power tools per work piece... I don't have TIME for batteries, dammit!

580 They tend to overestimate the rationality of the
average person. Likewise, a lot of progressives fall for stupid ideas
because they are complex and seemingly esoteric, which makes the
progressives feel like they are smarter than the rest of us.
Posted by: Colorado Alex In Exile at June 20, 2018 12:01 AM (Tnhbr)

It is really hard to buck common wisdom like "everyone has to work together to make things better" or "getting along is more important than what you personally want," so the person who can go against these teachings either does it because they don't care or they value individual freedom more than any fitting in. This makes people seem crankish, which is seen as focusing on odd, esoteric things to the exclusion of societal norms. But that would define people like Fredrick Douglass as well, a man who devoutly believed in things that general society of his time found to be neither normal nor acceptable.

Now, I am not saying that Ayn Rand is the same sort of person as Fredrick Douglass, but I would say that both of them believed fervently. I would not say Murray Rothbard or Ralph Raico had the same concerns as Douglass, but they all sought freedom, not just for themselves but for everyone who wanted it.

The amount of misery caused to man in the world through believing in Rousseau's "general will" is probably greater than the misery created by any other individual in history. Making people do things against their wants but for the betterment of society is insane; that is ignoring that society is made of people with disparate wants and varied needs. The purpose of society is not to define a better design and make people live up to it, the purpose of society is for people to join together to attempt joint goals, including the goal of being as rich and free as they can devise.

The best people to determine what is in their own best interest -- and their best interest, and not some interest deemed by someone important about what is in their best interest -- is themselves. They know what they value and what they don't care about.

How can a society be better if half the people don't want to play and the other half need them solely because the cost otherwise would be more than they would be willing to pay if they alone had to foot the bill? You would seem a crank if you object to this today, but upthread was a discussion on externalities, which is costs that are paid by third persons not really engaged in an act. What is a greater externality than being forced to foot the bill for creating a society you neither want nor can you profit from? Can someone who is focused on costs to individuals fail to note this loss and what it implies? And what would drive them to act against societal pressures to conform?

When Rousseau was convinced that people don't know what is in their best interest, but he did, or that he and his friends did, or his designated "legislator" who miraculously puts aside personal interests, tastes and preconceptions and "legislates" for a people the way a mom would make a child drink cods' liver oil for its own good, then that is to overestimate the rationality of any single individual.

The people who know the best interest for the people are the people themselves. They should be the ones to pay for it too.

The usual calls to justify actions to promote the general will are "but the children" or "their actions will damage you too." It is important to remember that when a government directs actions and creates policies that everyone has to obey, on the theory that it is for everyone's good or the general will there will be no way to stop it, no refuge from it, and no rational reason for it to end no matter who it hurts or destroys, because those that are suffering have nothing to do with enforcing it on themselves.

At least the schlub who goes into debt buying a smart phone or gets an opiate addiction he really can't afford gets to suffer for it himself.
The schlub who buys smart phone for a tenth of the country's population or legislates what are and are not controlled substances not only doesn't spend a personal penny, but probably gets a nice emolument for his generous donation of other people's money and gets a building named after him by a grateful bureaucracy to boot.

When the crank makes the comment that who knew that the general will meant so much suffering, of course he seems like a dick.

Yep, I went back to corded power tools because I didn't use the battery powered tools enough to cycle the battery, and the battery goes bad.

Hand held walki talkies are the same way, and two way radio shops have a 'battery conditioner' that will sometimes bring a bad battery back to life. There is no reason why battery chargers can't have the same cycling circuits built in to prevent premature battery failure. Other than the market for replacement batteries.

It happened to be accidental I saw the shows I did, at least the first ones, but then I stuck with them. I realized how much my perspective has been shaped by the mostly entertainment value shows and movies.

The new series they did was different than 1890s house. It was more recent. I wish I could remember the name. 1890s house was more uplifting.

Watching present day people trying to cope with the hardships...man, they go from excited to depressed awfully fast. I don't know how they survived. Packed in like rats. Yep, all Western civilizations should have to watch. No one has it that bad now in our societies.

Yea, those are luxuries. The pioneers with no lights, no fridge or ice to keep food; and coal or wood stove to cook. Pretty much go to sleep when the sun sets. Dirt floors. No windows. Wake up at dawn. The winter months would have killed me. Present day people who were trying to live the pioneer days lost their enthusiasm real fast.

Yea, it really stuck with me. It was like, where did I get all my romantic notions about the Pioneer days? The movies. Our perspectives are shaped so much more by TV and movies than we realize.

Blacksmithing tools and skills are NOT a lost art.

And don't pass up that old Stanley brace & bit at the next yard sale you see.

My tool stack has an entire drawer given to nothing but files, file cards and hadles.

Pro-tip. I have the oddly shaped Arkansas stones to sharpen EVERY thing in the inventory.

Electricity is a luxury.

Getting the job DONE, is a REQUIREMENT.

Battery-powered tools have come along way. The current generation (SWIDT?) of 18 and 20 volt lithium battery tools have a lot of work in them. And they are not exceedingly heavy, either. Get a 20 volt drill, and two batteries, the tool will probably outwork you.

I just shitcanned some Nicad cordless tools. Well, the batteries, anyway. I am going to put a 20-foot cord, and cigar lighter plug on the 12 volt cordless drill, and use it for working on cars. It has plenty of power, and a keyed Jacobs chuck (my addition). It'll work any place a car or pickup is handy, and I can always put a cigar lighter socket on a spare 12 volt car battery if I have a fuckton of holes to drill at far end of my lot. But one or two, or a dozen holes? I will reach for the DeWalt 20V cordless every time.

595 @ Platypus.

After Hurricane Rita, I helped no less than seven families in Dayton, TX, learn how to dig sanitary latrine pits in their backyards, and then upon "demand", dig new pits about five yards distant from the first.

Showed 'em too, how to suspend clotheslines and hang sheets, as to provide a bit of modesty, too.

Further, in the first days, had an entire neighborhood cook EVERY scrap of meat out of their fridges and freezers, to extend the time of usefulness, beyond the rot of having let it set, uncooked.

I left after the storm but five days later, but left an entire neighborhood well fed, free of cholera and ready to welcome the long overdue Red Cross Caravan (one Chevy Savannah van), replete with it's relief supplies. (dozen cases of water).

Here's the GOOD news.

The rednecks in the neighborhood, INSTANTLY caught clue as to what I'd showed, and broke out EVERY thing from their freezers, cooked it ALL, and spread the gospel to neighbors even acres away.

The big thing? NO ONE knew how to dig a slit trench, nor how to maintain it along a length.

In that, I made a small difference.

Otherwise... even without me, the rednecks were well along the way to a clue, even if only a few minutes behind.

Moral of the story.

Turn it ALL against the rednecks. In the end?

They win. Elites, lose.

As it should be.

I think you made a big difference. People really don't know how to do much anymore, at least the younger generations. It's all about technology and that's where they focus. 609 Wow. Here it is in 2018, and the Left has once again returned to their favorite fantasy: "Population control," i.e. finding a way to eliminate 75% of the people on Earth, in order to "stop Global Warming," their latest justification:

http://www.berkeleyside.com/2018/06/19/ opinion-the-pernicious-climate-dictum-dont-mention-population

His thesis: The real problem causing global warming is too many people. We need to reduce the global population down to 2.5 billion.

He blithely glosses over exactly how he suggests getting rid of 5 billion people. That's not his concern. Let the smart people figure that out!

It's as if he isn't even aware that humanity has gone a few steps down that road a few times, and realized what a big, big mistake that is.

Dear President Trump,

I am proud of you for standing firm on immigration. This is a problem the Congress must fix. Chuck Schumer doesn't want the problem solved. He wants the focus to be on you.
Democrat politicians don't care about kids. They just want to expand their voting rolls with their parents. Republicans want cheap labor for their Chamber of Commerce overlords. Mexico wants to get rid of Guatemalans coming into their country and to send their violent gang members here. Americans are dying because of violent illegals. People who went through the immigration system legally should not be in the back of the line so they illegals can disobey the law.

I make no excuses for people who are sick enough to send their kids with people they may not know to the U.S.-thus allowing them to die of heat exhaustion or be raped, sold into sex trafficking or become members of MS-13 so they can get on the American gravy train. That's child abuse!!
