Much-Hyped Summit Ends With Vague Promises of Denuclearization by North Korea, and Vague Promises of Security Guarantees by the US

I would say that nothing much has been gained -- which is what I expected to happen -- but nothing much has been given away, either -- which is what I feared could happen.

Nearly five hours of unprecedented and surreal talks between US President Donald Trump and North Korea's Kim Jong Un culminated on Tuesday with fulsome declarations of a new friendship but just vague pledges of nuclear disarmament.

For Trump, that amounted to a triumphant outcome in his extraordinary gamble with the rogue kingdom's despotic leader. But there were scant details on what new commitments had been secured from Kim, even as Trump announced he would end the regular military exercises the US conducts with South Korea.

...

"We both want to do something. We both are going to do something. And we have developed a very special bond," Trump said at the conclusion of the landmark summit. "People are going to be very impressed. People are going to be very happy."

The document he and Kim signed said the North Korean leader "reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula." In exchange, Trump agreed to "provide security guarantees" to North Korea.

But there was no mentioning the previous US aim of "complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization." And Kim's commitments did not appear to go beyond what he already pledged to do in April when he met South Korean President Moon Jae-in along their countries' border.

Trump insisted during a news conference the agreement went further than many people expected. But he acknowledged the effort to rid North Korea of its nuclear arsenal was in its early stages.

It's at best a first step, and a fairly easy first step, which gives little reassurance that the more difficult second, third, and fourth steps will be undertaken.

I'll have more -- especially about the bellicose I'm-such-a-tough-guy posturing of the never-learning, NeverTrumper necons -- later, but I wanted to get this up.

8 Complete denuclearization was always a fantasy--once that cat is out of the bag, it's not going back in.

The best outcome to establish good relations and pull the Norks out of China's grasp, as well as to restrict their export of nuclear technology.

I am optimistic it can work out well, but Kim is not completely giving up his nukes.

Shapiro isnt worth it, anytime you see him apparently giving some credit to Trump in a grudging way, he then immediately retweets a fake news item bashing Trump like its straight up fact. I'm not so sure. The nukes were the goal of his father, and as he said, some parts of his nation's past have constrained him. What if he had a nuke? Would the world suddenly drop sanctions, grant full recognition, etc? I don't think so. If you can get your primary goals met through other means (security, economy and diplomatic through a deal with the US), why not?

He clearly said, multiple times, that this may or may not produce anything, and that it was if anything the beginning of the negotiation process.

It wasn't as if Kim was going to come out of the summit and immediately apply for US statehood or anything ridiculous like that, but that seems to be what some people had worked themselves up into expecting.

45 I think there's a real difference-in-kind between this "peace process" and the ones that preceded it over the past decades.

Then, we gave away the store for a meeting, and let them get away with reneging on their end of the deal every single time.

This time, it was the threat of annihilation that brought them to the table, and we emphatically stated that our end of the deal (lifting sancions, security guarantees, etc.) will NOT occur until AFTER they comply to our satisfaction.

And Trump has proven already that he's willing to walk away from the table.

So yes, too soon to celebrate a complete victory, but it's not too soon to celebrate the progress that has been made.

90 old thinking

it's a new game dude

Posted by: nip at June 12, 2018 12:55 PM (ECLaL)

91 MSM wants to say this is abstract or inconsequential because we do not spell out the exact steps by which the four points will be realized. But we got plenty, and it's massively hypocritical to stab at Trump after having fawned over Barry and continuing to fawn over legislators who have no idea how to realize the authoritarian utopias described in their policy dreams.

1 and 2. "Peace and prosperity" and "lasting and stable" peninsula. Good foundation, I'd say that something, as opposed to "belligerence and famine" on at least one side of the table. Among countries that actually appreciate our help, a rising tide raises all boats. We establish trade, perhaps even a cooperative military partner in the region, big win for us.

3. Denuclearization. How is this not good and big? He said he'd do it, more than once, so he's a liar and burns all goodwill if he doesn't.

4. Repatriation of POW/MIA. Also a good thing, and specific enough to provide as something that we can do TODAY.

Regarding the lack of specificity of any one item, that's basically the same level of detail that most of our elected representatives include in their legislation. (Which is why the administrative state is so onerous - the proper authorities pass broad, flowery language but leave the implementation details to unelected bureaucrats with their own agendas.) So for MSM to criticize this is just a recycle of their galling but standard hypocrisy.

If Barry had done this we'd have all fainted and declared the rest of the week a national holiday. This is big, and we did get some important guarantees out of it.

And if KJU reneges on those guarantees, one thing this summit absolutely did not impact is the asymmetry of our respective militaries. We will pulverize the north end of the peninsula into lifeless dust if they do a 180 and act a fool.

But they're not going to. Famine and isolation suck and they know it. Make Koreas Korea Again.

Trump's dealt with wretched scum in that hive of villainy called NYC.

He's dealt with made member of the mafia. If you wanted something built in NYC in the 1980s, you dealt with the mafia. Probably in the 1970s and 1990s too. Also garbage collection was mafia controlled. It still is today except the mobsters who directly controlled it before got chased out so what they did is handed it over to family members. So the wife or kid has the name on the paperwork while the goon still runs the business.

Regardless, Trump has dealt with his fair share of thugs and cheats. The only difference here is that Kim controls a country and has an army.

120 History was made last night for certain.

MiL update. Out of surgery and short-term prognosis is positive. Rresponsive to commands and no anesthesia complications.

Surgeon says growth was uncharacteristic of a glioblastoma, an agressive malignant class of tumor. This looked more like an arterial venous malformation, a jumble of blood vessels, which started bleeding, and which would most likely be a benign growth with more positive, long-term prognosis. Testing will affirm the preliminary diagnosis in about about two weeks.

Breathing tube removed, response and coherence improved drastically.

Will be out of ICU, with continued positive developments, soon.

That may sound like a lot of negative info, but rest assured it is a wealth of unexpected positive news, considering all that was at stake and brain surgery to remove a still potentially malignant mass.

Prognosis changes from year or less to indeterminate, if the AVM diagnosis holds.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, for your prayers and well-wishes.

Why be great friends and have special relationships with Canada or Germany or France when all they do is take our stuff then insult us?

Stick with the good friends, dump the fake friends, make new friends. How is that not a great idea? You really think Canada or Germany are going to mess with us when they're suddenly eating at the loser lunch table of weird, socialist, sissy countries that once dreamed of commanding the helm of a Eurocentric globalist world order? You think they're really going to remain belligerent when NORTH KOREA is at the cool kids' table making fun of them with the rest of us? They'll stop being clowns or they'll become irrelevant.

I love this on so many levels. I hope we blow off our next big meeting with Macron to grab beers with Pierre Nkurunziza.

169 120 History was made last night for certain.

Flounder, you probably already know this, but if it was an AVM and they resected all of it your MiL dodged a bullet. They tend to be prone to rupturing. Hemhorragic strokes are no joke.

178 99 Trump gained great face in Asia from making the deal happen and dominating the agenda. Singapore gained face by hosting the summit and getting recognition for it. ROK gained face by going along for the ride. PDRK didn't lose face by attending, which I guess is a win for them. PRC did lose face because this was not a Beijing summit and Whoa! Fat made decisions without their express permission. Yeah, we did good.

Posted by: exdem13 at June 12, 2018 12:48 PM (W+kMI)

There's a lot to be said for this point. I don't know that you can understate exactly how important the "face" aspect is to the general culture over there.

I would be mildly concerned with China now that they have to save face.
====
Chinese screwed the pooch (then ate it) when they coached Whoa! Fat to have a tantrum, and then Trump announced he would cancel since the other side was obviously not being serious! I would have loved to see the collective face-fault in Beijing when that happened. Three days later the summit was back on in Singapore as planned, and Trump was all smiles. So yeah, China got burned, and is now wondering what to do next, and knows Trump won't kowtow to them.

234 I think the next summit should be in Peking, just to make everything clear.

*******************

I'm betting it'll be the White House next. I think the laudable goal here is to directly influence Kim now while deemphasizing China's. Before he only had China influencing him, but now that he's directly talking to America/South Korea, he's starting to see another perspective. Another reason why this summit was yuge. He's no longer isolated as he once was.

The ultimate ultimate goal would be re-unification of korea (a payoff to Kim to go away I would agree with at that point), a nuke free peninsula and nuke free Japan to appease China. I give this goal a .01% chance.
But we were headed for a nuke NK and Japan threatening to develop which would have been precarious. So far, so good.

256 British Empire foreign policy during its height was no permanent allies and no permanent enemies.

Lets face it, the old alliance structure that was useful in the Cold War is no longer valid. Does any of us actually think we would come to Turkey's aide in war, and we all witnessed Turkey not coming to our aide in the Iraq War.

Can we honestly say the EU has the same interests as the U.S., the same ideals, for that matter are they even allies?

Obviously some European nations are allies to the U.S., same thing holds true in Asia, but the idea that everything is fixed forever like it was in 1991 is insane.

Not saying much will come from dealing with North Korea, but it would be foolish for the U.S. to simply ignore opportunities here, including strategic. A North Korea less reliant on China might not be such a bad thing if China is the real threat.

388 I know that the narrative has been that Kim is a "madman" that wants to destroy the world. I've never bought into that. The North Korea that resulted from the Korean War has been fenced in by a policy that doesn't benefit the American people. The leaders of Korea have been very pragmatic. They had limited natural resources and used the view the West had of them to get billions of dollars of foreign aid, from Russia, China, Europe, Iran and America. The view that the Korean leaders are evil, insane despots is just propaganda that the people of America prefer to believe. Oh, sure, they're despots, but I always wondered how much control they really had. I remember monarchies that were really controlled by the Chancellor, the bureaucracy, or a cabal of close advisors. Kim went to school in Switzerland. By the accounts of his fellow students, he was liked by his classmates. He saw what the West had to offer and was impressed, I'm sure. He may have wanted to do something to open up NK to the rest of the world, but knew that if he did, his generals or the Chinese would make Kimchee out of him. I think it is wise to always question the narrative of the view you get from the government or the media about our "friends" or "enemies".

391 Not to mention the return of remains of US servicemen. That is winning in my book. Muh war games are gone is just lefty squawking imho. Did we loose anything by doing away with exercises or "pinky swear we assure your security"? NO not in my opinion. This was a good first step in the quest for not having to squash NK like a cockroach. The military solution is always a possibility. If we can de-fang the Norks and let them modernize for their own benefit everybody wins. I gave up on the notion that we can change another country to our specs without first destroying said country first. We do not have the will anymore for complete war. The best we can hope for is the Norks can remake their own country, they have come to the end of their rope.

It was bad for a whole host of reasons. There was nothing good about it and it not only allowed Iran to nuke up, but WE GAVE them cash in the short term to USE to nuke up and to fund terrorism. We even gave them access to our banking system to convert their cash to euros. I still want to know what "fund" that cash came from. On top of that the entire premise--Iran as the boss of the middle east is fucked up left wing anti-democracy 1980s era "anticolonialism" bullshit.

So, assuming that Pompeo can keep his own people focused--and I think he can--we can get something substantive down the line. Remember, the war games happen every year.
