Let's take a look at what made the Dump's headlines:

  • OK, how many of you 'ettes participated in this?
  • A blow up doll on a flight, is a no-no.
  • Speaking of topless bathing.
  • This has to be a Nigerian scam?
  • Not a good trip.
  • Ooops!
  • Flying the friendly skies?
  • Triggering, safe spaces and sex in public.
  • Dude!
  • Millennials are lazy.

6 Who's Chris Hardwick? Well I guess it shows how little I care for what passes for "common culture" these days. Now he's denying it.

It'll be fun to watch the left have to grapple with the idea that sometimes angry exes just make stuff up because they're angry. Or crazy. Which is why it's stupid to "always believe the woman". Or maybe they won't face it, which means man after man on their side is gonna keep being taken down, every time a personality disorder rears it's ugly head in public.

Either choice is gonna be entertaining for our side.

15 This might amuse Morons, but after only a short time in my store; the big display in front of Electronics of the James Patterson/Bill Clinton book has been displaced by an even bigger display of Jurassic World plastic dinosaurs.

I think there is some kind of allegory in there. But the book display with only five books missing has been relegated to the back amidst all the freight.

    31 Millennials are lazy.

    Eh, they're not particularly lazy.

There are a few things in playfrom what I've been able to observe:

    1) Thanks to the wonders of Barky's Reign of Error, most of them are quite a bit poorer than you or I would've been at that age.

    2) Bar prices are insane these days. $15 or more for a lame-ass, poorly conceived cocktail.

    3) Game Night is a thing with millennials. Couples and mixed groups of friends enjoy sitting down to an evening of Catan (for example) with wine and beer.

    4) Going out to eat as a group is more they're thing. It almost doesn't matter where.

32 I received my copy of "Marked for Death" yesterday. As discussed in last week's Book Thread, it's about WWI aerial combat. I'm looking forward to reading it.

I bought a remaindered hardcover online, and it came with a note which read in part:

"Bellwether Books has made every effort to inspect each book prior to shipment to ensure there are no markings and/or inscriptions of an offensive nature in the book you have purchased."

I know that used books sometimes have underlined or highlighted passages, and sometimes a book will be signed by the author with a personal note to the buyer.

An autographed book is generally considered to be a good thing. I've never heard of a book having "an inscription of an offensive nature".

    76 Scenario...

Two great friends/band mates of yours arrange future schedule to spend a minimum 11 hours on the road on Friday.

Spend that 1.5 hours load in/sound check and 45 min load out on Saturday.

Spend that same minimum 11 hours on the road home on Sunday.

Later, in a phone conversation, the host informs you that they only want you to play for 15 minutes.

After thinking about it for a couple of days you write a letter thanking the host for their generous offer but inform them that you won't be making the trip.

Don't hear back for a week so you send an email to make sure they got the letter so that they don't continue to go to the trouble of making special arrangements.

Did I do something wrong there.

80 When employers join 'The Illinois Exodus'

A television ad last fall for Gov. Bruce Rauner's re-election campaign featured governors from surrounding states touting their economic prosperity while crediting, sarcastically, Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan.

Sell out Rauner does not deserve re-election, but if Jabba the Pritzker wins...well Illinois is screwed any way but Jabba will speed up the demise.

87 That Dearborn story couldn't be any less informative. Sheesh. Not one single detail to tell, except that in June of 2017 some boxes were taken by law enforcement officials from a private residence of an unknown, undisclosed person for unknown or undisclosed reasons. And, we're told there is no public threat, so there's nothing to see here, people.

If I were the so-called reporter on this story, I wouldn't have bothered to spend the time writing the article, as it only raises more questions than answers. I thought it was reporters who were supposed to get the story for us, not write a teaser trailer for a movie that won't be released?!

The prev. owner put in a big paver patio but didn't put polymeric sand down afterwords. A year after I bought the home and "Surprise!" there's grass and weeds and ants and all sorts of crap coming up.

So a small section at a time i'm going to lift the pavers, space them out better, put down the polymeric sand and wet. Should take a little over a billion hours to complete. In 90-100deg high humidity.

Then as a reward to my self I'm going to try out a bbq ribs recipe that starts in a instapot pressure cooker then finishes under a broiler.

But step 1. for all this is drinking more coffee.

103 A great deal of the appeal of going topless, or to nude beaches, or sex in public is because it is a forbidden activity.

But one of the drawbacks of nude beaches, Europeans have discovered, is the unexpected consequences of people doing sex in public. At least one town in France ended nude beaches because of it.

Probably still the same problem, because when the authorities designate areas where nude bathing is allowed, people still insisted on doing the prohibited activities outside the designated zones.

116 Heartbreak for woodworking fans, and, a candidate for the next Book Thread:
The Charles Rennie Mackintosh library at the art institute in Glasgow, renowned as the birthplace of Art Nouveau and if I may say so, the soul of modernism which is not offensive bullshit, burned, AGAIN, last night.
There was a major fire in 2014, and 20-some-million (British, or Scottish?) pounds had been spent for restoration. It was just about to go back into regular use...
    (1) Oh hell yes I am suspicious of very patient Scottish architecture critics;
    (2) Perhaps C. Rennie Mackintosh could have been a bit more conscious of fire-prevention techniques, causing consternation to those of us who have slavishly attempted to copy his details;
    (3) I don't really think the "Look! He's Coloured!" remake of Fahrenheit 451 (wouldn't the Euro version be titled Centigrade 232.8?) was good enough to inspire copycats, but I've never gone to the movies in Glasgow.

144 Who's Chris Hardwick? Well I guess it shows how little I care for what passes for "common culture" these days. Now he's denying it.

It'll be fun to watch the left have to grapple with the idea that sometimes angry exes just make stuff up because they're angry. Or crazy. Which is why it's stupid to "always believe the woman". Or maybe they won't face it, which means man after man on their side is gonna keep being taken down, every time a personality disorder rears it's ugly head in public.

Either choice is gonna be entertaining for our side.

149 Weeds between pavers are not an easy call, because so many factors vary so much with micro-climate, soil type, and other magical shit like that.

I have noted weeds here will start on the top layer, in new soil-like fragments that form from what blows in or decays in place over the seasons. We have very rich soils here, lots of humus in process, and weeds that have been toughened up by 150 years of living in the bottoms of oil storage tanks.
I've had weeds get going pretty good in pea-gravel concrete, and solid mortar with Pramitol cut into the mix, in blacktop ("asphaltic concrete"), and in stone loose enough and regularly-turned enough that would-be visitors cannot wear high heels.

The recent appearance on the market of bargain versions of Round-Up (Glyphosate, recently condemned by the State of California) has given my brickwork a new lease on permanence. I've converted soil-laid brick and sandstone into Crankshaft-worthy cover photos with repeated application with a sprayer. You're going to have to spray that sand anyway.

If you give up on Old School and just concrete over everything, you will also get weeds in the concrete.

156 There is a new movie advertised-First Reformed about a former military chaplain whose son had died. He is, of course, feeling quite badly about it when he meets a woman whose radical environmentalist husband has committed suicide-this setting the plot in motion. Movies often don't do clergy people very well. I know someone who was a military chaplain whose son died-some time ago. I have a feeling he won't see it. Movies generally do clergy people very badly because the people who write them have no really Christian belief. Will the chaplain have an affair with the woman and decide he's really a Druid who loves some trees and becomes a pacifst Even in that T.V. show about the guy who's supposedly was a minister with a big family I think you rarely saw him in church . Plus if critics like it and it's about a minister it probably means that I'd be gnashing my teeth.

People from the church who are also on our larger denominational mailing list-know that's what happenned and if he runs into people who don't know they will ask him. Why keep it a secret?

Had a similar situation here....there was a girl my age that "died suddenly" recently. Not sure if it was suicide or drugs, but it's likely one of the two.

Not that it makes it any less tragic, but there is a bigger difference between that and some anomaly where the person died in their sleep from natural causes or something. The latter is scary because it could happen to any one of us.

Also, the more and more "died suddenly" is used as code for suicide/OD, the more it makes every sudden death look suspicious. I've seen that as well, when a younger person really does die of natural causes and everyone and their brother are digging through their life trying to figure out what it is, and rumors are flying that it's this, that, or the other.

221 Someone asked Leslie Nielsen how he could be so funny, and he replied "Well here's how I say the line if I'm in serious movie", and he said it, and then he said "now here is how I say it in a comedy" - and his delivery was completely identical.

Now aside from being the kind of deadpan joke that Nielsen is so good at, it also points out how Nielsen had the perfect straight man delivery, and excelled at saying the most hilarious things in a totally serious and earnest manner.

"This patient needs to go to a Hospital immediately!"
    "A Hospital??? What is it?"

I don't see it as truth vs deception at all (Grey Fox - saw 201). If someone wants to tell me the specifics, they can. If they'd prefer not to, it's none of my business. It's not going to alter my perception of the deceased or the family either way. Eliding that someone's death was suicide and saying that he or she "died suddenly" isn't at all dishonest and I wouldn't feel slighted if they don't want me to know how it happened. Maybe it's just me.

I deal with suicide often enough... too much. It's always too much.

Simple truth is, those who need to know, need to have it clear. There should be no limit on what they are told, what details they have a right to ask.

Everyone else, it is ALWAYS the right of those closest to the person, to choose what they will and will not disclose. And anyone who continues to pry, when euphemisms are being used, needs to shut their lousy nosy mouths and leave those people alone.

Where I have seen the nastiness is if someone dies of liver complications. Gossips go wild about secret drinking. Nobody seems to be aware of the aceteminophen problems and whatever other medications someone is on that attack the liver. Makes me nuts with the cruelty.

291 So, here's the issue: the guy is going on a short vacay with his folks. Haven't heard from him since last night when his folks got into town. A "good night" would have been nice, but I figured his parents got into town, and they visited with family and went out to eat and caught up, and he probably crashed...no big.

So, I message him this morning to have a good time, keep me posted on any fun stuff they do, very casual...still haven't heard from him.

Now, I trust him. It's not a matter of trust. He's with his family after all. But, even if it was with his boys, I would still trust him. I'm just more upset because, how long does a text take? 10 seconds?

"Good night." or "Will do." probably don't even take that long. Not even a full day into his vacation, and I am already perturbed. I had fully accepted that we wouldn't get to talk like we normally do. I was okay with that. But, I thought he would at least check in periodically.

Thanks for your nice words. I like to go out for walks in the morning before it gets too hot. It lifts my spirits, allows me to pray and to appreciate God's creativity in nature. Unless things are really bad-personally speaking the walks lift me out of myself and remind that there are always things to be grateful for. Plus I was a "hybrid" as a kid-that is, I like to play with dolls but also enjoyed fishing and hanging around by- or in streams.

304 If I were the so-called reporter on this story, I wouldn't have bothered to spend the time writing the article, as it only raises more questions than answers. This! They gave the street address. Look up the address in the tax rolls. Who is the homeowner? Is it owner-occupied or a rental? Should be a lot of publicly-available information a competent reporter could ferret out.

This is what I think I've learned in dealing with male friends. I think I would expect the same of a boyfriend- unless they are a really chatty person-or your "boyfriend" was Peter Strozk-who apparently sent 30,000 e-mails or something. Men tend not to reply as much to texts as e-mails as women do, so unless something is wrong. Men reply because they need or are giving information or might do a quick check on. They tend to be mono focused -so if he's going on a trip with his family-he's going on a trip now and his mind is on that. If I'm offending any males here I apologize-that's my perception.

You have to use the right wood. Cedar or redwood are good, in that they contain natural oils that resist rot. Pressure-treated spruce is also good. Plain spruce or pine? Not worth the trouble of installing it.
