The Western world has lost its civil courage, both as a whole and separately, in each country, each government, each political party, and, of course, in the United Nations. Such a decline in courage is particularly noticeable among the ruling groups and the intellectual elite, causing an impression of loss of courage by the entire society. Of course, there are many courageous individuals, but they have no determining influence on public life.Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn The ONT's apology and Who knew that Golden Retrievers were sneaky little bastards? Obviously nothing productive and/or wholesome. If you’re a dog owner, maybe, just maybe, a couple of things that come to mind when you take ‘ol Spot to the dog park are rape culture and non-heterosexual “performativity.” What’s that? You don’t consider such things when you’re walking the pup? No worries, then. The Portland Ungendering Research Initiative’s Helen Wilson is here to clue you in. Her paper, “Human reactions to rape culture and queer performativity at urban dog parks in Portland, Oregon,” discusses the “emerging themes in human and canine interactive behavioral patterns in urban dog parks” in order to gain a better understanding about people’s decisions and “emergent assumptions around gender, race, and sexuality. The term "crazy bitch" comes to mind. Since the SJW movie wars have been coming up so much this week I'll mention an observation I noticed. The Incredibles 2 trailers have gone completely dark on the actual plot. In the original trailer it was revealed that Mr. Incredible had to become a stay at home dad while Mrs. Incredible was recruited to go out and save the day and rehabilitate the image of super heroes. The trailer featured Mr. Incredible struggling with the simple tasks of taking care of children while his wife was out in the world acting heroic. ALL of that has been scrubbed from the new TV spots.

I guess that, just as there are certain types who go into politics, there are certain types who marry politicians. And Mrs. Sanford was not.... typical. ------------------------- IIRC, it was a second offense with the same woman. She'd forgiven him after the first time. And iirc, she was initially willing to let it go after the second time. But then he gave the speech where he blathered on about how his girlfriend was his soul mate, and Mrs. Sanford went ahead and threw him out of the Governor's Mansion. Mrs. Edwards was another who let her husband have it after his affair came to light. Of course, she was dying at the time. So she likely had a slightly different view of things than most wives of politicians. Posted by: junior at June 12, 2018 11:01 PM (DlSwL) 188

What's up with that? ------------------- They do in the first book. There's a (very) brief segment where they're fighting in a war against the British. You have to wonder about this. @217 I admit, I never read the book(s). All I know about the 3/4 Musketlessteers is from the movies.
-------------------- The books are fictional stories about historical people who really existed. There really was a D'Artagnan, for instance, although the details likely don't match up too well with what Dumas wrote. And there really was a man in an iron mask, although to this day no one knows exactly why. The first book is pretty good. My recollection of the second book is that it got rather dull for long stretches. But it's been quite a while since I read it. And the version of the third book that I read was the "good parts" version that had much of the content cut in order to focus on the story of the Man in the Iron Mask. Here's the difference between wagyu and Kobe beef...
Kobe is the "capital" of Hyohgo Prefecture. That's the farm country of Japan, its breadbasket, so to speak. It's like Nebraska or Iowa to them. That region is most famous for its beef. It's said that the ranchers massage their cows with whiskey. I don't know if that's actually true, but Kobe beef is very well marbled, with veins of fat running all through it. It's extremely high-quality beef, and strict import/export restrictions mean it's generally not available here in the US. If you see a restaurant here offering, say, "Kobe beef sliders" or something like that, it's not actually Kobe beef. If you go to a high-end steakhouse and they're offering a Kobe steak for, like, $100, well, that might actually be Kobe beef. But it also might not. Some restaurants instead offer "wagyu" beef. Wagyu literally means "Japanese-style beef". It's not Kobe beef, so describing it as "Japanese-style" is literally meaningless. It was wagyu beef that Obama was always eating. "Wagyu" doesn't actually mean anything as far as quality, which makes it a perfect metaphor for the Obama Presidency. Posted by: Prothonotary Warbler at June 12, 2018 11:37 PM (wSC8T) 305

This involves 125+ Sanfords being retired (including Senate GOP). This is, um, hard to do. And there's no one or powerful entity even trying to do it. Thus America's future confronts its main challenge. Posted by: rhomboid at June 12, 2018 11:37 PM (QDnY+) 308

Kobe's earthquake was the worst disaster of its sort to hit a major modern city in recent history. City never really recovered, economically, to its former status, as other unfavorable economic trends coincided with the timing of the disaster.
Nice town. Easygoing, no Osaka/Tokyo feel of immense size/population/energy. Unbelievable bakeries/confectionery (like being in western Europe). Kobe was one of the four targeted cities for the Doolittle raid in 1942 (Kawasaki shipyards, I think). Ever since I closed my bookstore a couple years back, I am driving everybody who thought they knew me crazy. Counting years at school, years of raising kids, and years of working, I figure I spent nearly sixty five years getting up at 0 Dark Hundred, going to bed every night early to compensate for getting up so early. The minute I got out from under the bookstore, I reverted to my natural state -- night owl. These days, my kids panic if I call or text them after eight at night and grind their teeth when they call before noon and I complain they got me out of bed. I figure I earned it. Sleeping when and how long I want is my reward for surviving sixty five years of sleep deprivation.

340 Outback inspires some crazy loyalty, man.
Posted by: Cicero (@cicero) at June 12, 2018 11:47 PM (FsRTQ) Passing by the obvious (and funny) snark, this: Outback is a Florida based chain, promoting a pseudo-Aussie format in which to sell a variety of steaks, seafood, burgers, chicken and more. Texas Roadhouse offers a clearly superior variety of cuts of beef, as well as burgers, chicken and more. Here's the thing. Sirloin vs. Sirloin.... The Outback steak TASTES better, even if the cut isn't as elegant as the Texas Roadhouse offering. It's the Outback seasonings, and the sear on the meat from pan/griddle contact, that resonates. Conversely, the Texas Roadhouse steak lacks the succulent flavor of the Outback, but offer more ounces per dollar, a flame-seared finish and a buttery basting applied while cooking... it's GOOD, (very good), but I tend to take my dining dollars to Outback, just for that flavor. Ideally? Walk an uncooked Texas Roadhouse sirloin over to the Outback kitchen, and turn 'em loose with it. Tie-breaker. Texas Roadhouse wins the waitress wars by any measure. Not even a contest. Just simply, a deep, personal and fully committed dedication to protect, defend and uphold the Constitution of the United States. Exactly as meant, when written, too. We have on record, ALL of the debates of the Constitutional Committees during the Conventions which led us from the Articles of Confederation, to the Constitution as ratified. It would be nothing for Congress to pass a law, demanding that the Supreme Court be BOUND to pass judgments in light of not only the inked letter of the law, but from the winning side (ONLY) of the debates that led to the particular Article, Section of Amendment in question. Stare Decisis is the antithesis of a Representative Democracy, aka Republic. Taken as a whole, judges get it wrong just as often as we folk... though I'd wager that the lefties weigh down the average on their side, while the textualists/originalists/Constitutionalists, get it right a bit more, even of only by a couple points, here n' there. Owned and operated by a two-star Michelin rated chef from Belgium. That wee eight ounce filet... I quite literally could cut it with a spoon, and did. Just to put it to the test. The flavor was beyond compare, it was amazing. He plated it with a small dipping cup holding a couple ounces of a slightly altered bernaise sauce. You'd think that wouldn't go with such a steak. You would be wrong. Mind blowingly good, it was. Place was called "Matter of Time". Aptly named. You needed to set aside three hours or so to dine there. Thanks. I didn't get much sleep last night and today was a crazy day at work so I can't stay up much longer. Long story very short: I work at one of three consulting companies that the county allows my client to use. Today, we found out there are legal issues with one of those consulting companies. As a result, with no warning to my client or any of that consulting company's consultants, they were let go. This left all of us with very knowledgeable people in very crucial positions suddenly gone. It was a lot to take in. One of which in my area was very crucial. A very little bit of back ground here on my career. I've been in Information Technology for over 30 years. I have over 12 years in the healthcare industry and working with a specific Health Care Insurance Claims Processing System. I have About 20 years with Microsoft SQL Server. Finding someone that has all these things combined is very rare. Now today, I found out a developer that has been in the healthcare industry about twice as long as me, has almost as much time as I in this one product, and has been in IT as long as me and is as good as me (if not better) in software development is gone. For the first time in a long time I am having to fill someone's shoes that I was in awe of. This at the age of 56 (at the end of the month). Wow. For the first time in a long time I'm feeling overwhelmed at just the prospect !

Constitutionalist.
And no, not the group of well-meaning poseurs pretending to be a Party. Just simply, a deep, personal and fully committed dedication to protect, defend and uphold the Constitution of the United States. Exactly as meant, when written, too. Didn't some nutjobs take that name? It's been mumble decades since BFF and I started reading things and sharing them and coming to the conclusion that, get this, the Framers got it pretty well right. We haven't found a name or a party yet. Classic Liberal is sort of good, but you have to explain it all the time. Libertarian is accurate but then everyone thinks it's about smoking dope. Do you know if the NRA and other pro-2nd-A groups endorsed his opponent? ************************* The NRA endorsed Sanford if you can believe it, but they also gave Arrington the same grade, so they probably went with the incumbent by default. Dont know about the other groups. Im wondering by what criterion they are judging Sanford's record on guns because it was a mixed bag (some good, some bad, he wasn't consistent) Posted by: Froderick Wonkensteen at June 13, 2018 12:28 AM (+dsLj) ================= It's been a while since i've been a member but I remember incumbency factoring into the equation (because they actually have a track record to go by, not just a questionnaire I think) when the grades were more or less equal. Time for the old folk.
Feeling downright pleased with events tonight, we may be seeing the harbingers of real change. I know we will prevail in the task set before us, we've done so in previous dire situations. No reason not to ultimately win in this one. Won't be an easy task to accomplish but we'll do it for one reason--we are Americans, and as such are denied the option of failure. ************************************* I think a lot of it stems from accepting the media's portrayal of Trump without question too. If Trump wants somebody like Sanford gone, they think it's all about ego, Trump can't handle a little criticism, and don't consider maybe Trump had a point that Sanford was undermining his agenda and hurting his efforts to MAGA, which is precisely what he said. Instead they tried to defend him, and yet the question remained, if Sanford was so conservative and wanted to MAGA, why did he vote AGAINST Trump nearly half the time? A few democrats in Congress actually voted more often for Trump's agenda than he did. It's embarrassing. Posted by: Froderick Wonkensteen at June 13, 2018 12:42 AM (+dsLj) 464

USNtakim, pretty much agreed. Though I think the "boorish behavior" was mostly before he put his hand on the Bible last year - I ignored him since Studio 54 days, meaning forever, never saw 15 seconds of the TV show. But as prez what exactly has been the "boorish" behavior?
I don't consider his NYC biz promotionalism schtick, when he talks, boorish - it's sort of hilarious, and very very American. But the really striking thing, both inspiring and depressing at the same time, is his political integrity. Just about zero daylight between what he campaigned on, and what he's done, or is trying to do. Zero. Depressing because this most basic political virtue (without this kind of integrity, representative govt. is broken, meaningless) has become so rare. There's a butcher on youtube, Scott Rea. In his opinion, the best cut is hangar steak because of the flavor. He thinks filet mignon is overrated. It might be tender, but the flavor is weaker. And the tenderness is a negative if you prefer more texture to it. I tend to agree. I prefer sirloin or ribeye.

Keith Ellison and John Edwards walked into a Minneapolis bar (Ellison was driving, natch.) They come across Walter Mondale, nursing a pitcher and oblivious to the world. Ellison asks Mondale what's the matter. Mondale looks at the two, and says, "You wouldn't beleive me if I told you." Edwards, thinking he know's what's up, asks, "Does this have something to do with Carter?" Mondale blurts out, "Why the hell would I Carter? She looked old enough to me!"
