McDonald's To Begin Equipping Stores with Self-Ordering Kiosks, 1000 Per Quarter, Until All Human Order-Takers Are Replaced by 2020

This doesn't just make economic sense. It makes customer-service sense, too. With the country no longer insisting or even urging a proficiency in English (even among native English speakers), the most frustrating part of any visit to McDonald's is the lengthy back-and-forth with an order-taker trying to get them to understand the words that have come out of your mouth.

It's easy enough just to push buttons. Double quarter pounder with cheese, Hold Pickles, Hold Bun. Not that difficult for customers to figure out. You don't have to be a genius to push big buttons that correspond with the food you want to buy.

A tight labor market (Thanks, Trump!) plus the leftists' demands that even the most menial, unskilled labor positions be paid a minimum of $15 per hour makes this inevitable.

The Fight for $15 has been proclaimed a success everywhere it brought about an increase in the minimum wage but, as almost anyone could have predicted, the end result is going to be more automation and, probably, fewer jobs. I'm saying "probably" fewer jobs because the official word from McDonald’s and other chains is that they aren’t necessarily cutting staff just reassigning them to other jobs in the restaurant. What jobs exactly? That's never been entirely clear. No doubt there will always be one person on hand to take orders but it could come down to just one person there to help people use the kiosks.

As the industry leader, this move is likely to get any competitors who were still on the fence moving in the same direction. Already, Wendy's, Shake Shack, and Subway have suggested they are making similar moves.

I imagine McDonald's will avoid immediate cuts to staff but will let the staffs attrit naturally without hiring replacements for the now-redundant order-takers.

46 Fast casual is the dominant trend is restaurants in tight labor markets. That's when you order like with fast food and then take it to your table.
Fast food restaurants are already using apps for orders and they will just replicate that on site. Not just easier ordering, but also the ease of ordering more.
Existing staff will either focus on more custom orders faster, or additional higher value service.

70 Well, as I posted this morning, my recent visits to McDonalds and Wendy's after a lengthy hiatus have been met by people, old and young, who speak English and are generally interested in getting my order taken quickly, correctly and politely. My guess is that these kiosk things will be installed as trials. They are going to find that most people aren't going to order food from an ATM. Just like I wonder how many people are ordering online and driving into the McDonalds and sitting in the pickup parking spot, waiting for curbside delivery.

The kiosks will require a credit card. Not going to work well in low income areas.

for a while there, my local scottish restaurant had a canned "may i take your order" recording to make certain you started to talk before the order taker was ready to listen.

that's over and above their genius idea of having a double drive-thru that funnels down to a single lane at the pay window (while turning a corner, for extra convenience). all that did was push the bottleneck to taking payment (and the slow chip machines didn't help that) instead of handing out food.

I imagine it's less about preferring human interaction and instead dealing with their shit layout for the checkout. It's great if you're grabbing a few items and then getting out of their, but very few places have a conveyor for you to unload all your stuff with the room afterwards for it to sit.

So instead you take an item out of your cart, scan it, and then in the bag, scan the next item, in the bag, oops the bag is now full gotta go mess with the bags now.

Much more convenient to have the conveyor table and some there for here I'll keep unloading my cart you scan my shit and maybe be lucky and the bag guy is free to also start getting everything ready to go.

176 MOS Burger tastes like soylent green (I would imagine).

Lotte Burger somehow manages not to have stale buns... that would be too easy. No, it's more like, zero condiment other than a sort of mayo, a completely flavorless bun, and a burger which is, itself, somehow stale. Not "tired" like McDouble out of the microwave at 9PM, but stale-like-stale-bagel-stale. With a little flavorless lettuce. I'm not sure how it's possible to create such a burger, but they did it.

McD in England doesn't have quite the snap it does here, although the fries are not bad, just different. McD in Germany, the fries were more obviously fried in vegetable oil, and just on balance not quite American Standard. McD SK is maybe just a touch below that.

Robot bouncer: You must order something or you will be removed.

Black Starbuck's hustlers: We're waiting for someone, and we need to use the bathroom.

Robot: You must make a purchase or you cannot use the bathroom.

BSH: We don't wanna purchase nothin'.

Robot: *grabs both by the collars and throws them out into the street*

Now, what are the Starbuck's hustlers going to do? They can't claim racism. A robot can't be racist. All the chain has to do is to show that their robot was programmed to treat everyone that way. You can't claim the robot has secret, hidden, unconscious biases.

So the next time you are out at your favorite chain, don't be surprised that half the staff there are just a shade outside of felons. I think it was a good program, as it helped these kids see an alternative path in life to drugs, gangs and street life, but......

But I no speak da Spanish, and most of the time when I go through the drive through, I can't understand them and they can't understand me. Not to mention they all come from the low end of the IQ scale.

OTOH, I learned how to run a cash register nearly fifty years ago, and the self checkout stands drive me insane because they are so slow and stupid. Half the time they can't read the UPC code, so I have to wave the item back and forth until the machine finally accepts the code. But I'd have to wait in line forever to get checked out by a human because the customers are so slow and stupid.

But from what I've read about the self serve food kiosks, I'd be willing to at least try one. Before I got into book selling, I worked in the food hospitality industry for several years, much of the time as either the manager or the assistant manager. Paying some yahoo off the street $15 an hour to flip a burger or assemble a sandwich just is not workable, at least not by the staff/food cost/over head formula I learned back in the Dark Ages.

Just about every fast food place is staffed by illegal aliens, at least in my state, one of the biggest proponents of loose immigration enforcement were franchise owners.

They'd own like 30 McDonalds and make a big stink if Joe Arpaio decided to go after illegals. Republican officeholders would fall in line to get that $1,000 campaign check.

This ordering technology will also help eliminate the game-playing that some customers like to perpetrate on retail clerks: changing orders, arguing over options and prices, fishing for disses, staged outrages for youtube, etc. You know when you see "those people" ahead of you in line that you are going to have to wait four times longer because they have to play their f'n power-trip games. ---

These jobs should attrit by nature as people movr up the food chain. To stir up trouble, Marxist weirdos began insisting that these low level jobs should be careers that will pay for home ownership and children, pay more than the economic value produced, pay more than positions that require years of education.

What about customers who are too dumb to use the automated kiosks? Are they going to protest about that next? Force the stores to hire special helpers?

Posted by: Semi-Literate Thug at June 13, 2018 05:43 PM (4TznP)

262 This is why the $15 minimum wage won't help, but higher interest rates will. Do I want a $15/hour employee, or a $50,000 machine? (just guessing on that, but I suspect the system to tie it all together will cost much more than the front-end kiosk).

Well, that depends. If I can borrow for close to zero because I'm a blue chip, and I can roll over my debt forever, then I want that damn machine. If I have to 8% or more interest on it, I might *not* want that machine - it would depend on how long it will live.

The low interest rate environment is brutal on labor because it makes capital just so very cheap. Now, order-taking was likely going to be automated anyway for some of the reasons Ace mentions, but they could automate (and are working on it) the whole damn store including the cooking. That is terribly expensive but if capital is free then it doesn't matter - especially when you're staring down the barrel of a $15 minimum wage.

Hiking the minimum wage isn't necessary. Hike interest rates and watch what happens to labor demand.

Posted by: LCMS Rulz! at June 13, 2018 05:21 PM

I stopped using the self-checkout at certain locations not because I miss the human interaction. It's the system the store uses. Too many places require you to place the item in a bag right after you swipe it, with the system registering that some weight got added to the bag. Good luck with that, especially with lightweight items. The machine will keep telling you to place the item in the bag. You can't swipe anything else or otherwise move on, you're stuck. So now I don't do self-checkout unless the store has a traditional conveyor belt.

Yeah, the condiments is usually where I get bummed out.

Do you think anyone is cleaning those ketchup or mustard containers between customers?

And you're kind of shit out of luck -- you need to touch it, and your food is right there. I typically try to use my left hand to touch gross condiments.

Watch your waitress next time youre in a restaurant. She'll put her thumb on your plate when she serves it, then bus another table, then grab her cash tip off another table, then touch another customers food/ plate. Maybe even occasionally replate things if they moved around in transit to where the tray thing is from whence she is serving you.

All without washing her hands.

Eeks.

Braydon! Braydon? Braydon! BRAYDON!" on an unshuffled repeat loop for more time than it takes for Taylor Swift to crap out one of her godawful "songs" from her silly blonde noggin. All this while I'm standing there starving, with a veritable motocross of six-year olds kicking up dust and torn up straw wrappers, swarming around my legs as if they knew me, and all I know is that one of the little shitheads is apparently named Braydon. That one's probably the ringleader.

It's the laminated menus that wig me out the most.

Any moisture / bacteria gets trapped between what is essentially two pieces of waterproof plastic.

At least with a paper menu, the water evaporates (or ruins the paper and is thrown out) and the bacteria should theoretically die before I have to touch the menu.

Oh, and bus your own table.

Nope.
The kiosk prints out a paper receipt of your order with a big number at the top. The customer takes the receipt and moves to the cash register, yes, the same cash register where you formerly spoke your order to an employee. There you pay for it. The cashier types the order number into the register and asks for your money.

So now 2 lines instead of 1.

390 Best McDonald's I was ever at was in the Netherlands.

Best I ever had was a McDonald's in Milan, on the way to the airport, after a 2 week vacation. Pesto, pasta and seafood is all very well, but at that point, I would have killed for a quarter pounder. The best thing was that they gave you lots of ice in your drink. Most Italians give you none, and if you ask for some they'll bring 1-2 small cubes. They act like it's gold.

399 Well, chickens are known for the way that their heads move back and forth. The motion that they make looks similar, but not quite identical, to the motion a person would make when performing fellatio.

Thus, a woman (or man, I suppose) who performs a lot of fellatio is known as a "chicken head."

We have a favorite McDonalds we stop at going and coming from a regular destination. The food is passable, but it has become a destination because they've NEVER gotten an order right. Ten years of stopping, and something is always wrong.

Christmas we thought they'd broken the streak, but the Dr Pepper was just fizzy water (no syrup). We laughed and laughed.

Spring break we thought they'd succeeded, and the pack of apples in the Happy Meal had one apple slice in it (usually six or so).

I love that place.

438 They're still working the kinks out, and change their minds as to how the kiosk works every week or two.

Originally the cups were out next to the kiosk, which meant "Maravilloso! Tazas gratiss!" so they'd stock up and not have to go to Costco. So, now you order at the kiosk, and have to go to the counter to wait in line and ask for a friggin' cup.
Then, you've got to enter the number you're taking - a stack of numbers like you place on the table. Then they bring you your order. If you order at the counter, they give you your number on the receipt and you have to go get the order as usual. Order at a kiosk and they come find you.

I hate the drink machine. I don't want to have to touch a disgusting communal iPad to get a cup of coca cola. I liked the other way, where I would use the center of the cup to push in the thing and then soda dispensed in to said cup.

It was a good system.

473 I worked for MCD as a support rep and eventually a contractor for thier internal POS build and support team for seven years. I helped impliment the current POS standard they use and saw early Kiosk designs.

People don't realize MCD has been working on automation and speed for fifty years.

They will eventually have kiosks. And eventually they'll be pretty damned good.

If you can post here with decent grammar you could run a MCD register today with 2 minutes of how to - they are that easy.

To those concerned about credit cards being required - 13 years ago when I started working for MCD 70 odd percent of all transactions were cashless. (Credit or debit card.) Today I bet it's in the 90s

509 They can't get rid of order-takers completely, anyway, because the machines aren't perfect. The McDonald's closest to where I live regularly has the credit-card reader at the kiosks go down in the morning, meaning you have to go to the register to pay.

Also, there are certain customizations you can't make at the kiosk. For example, maybe you like Egg McMuffins but don't like egg yolks. You can ask the cashier to substitute the folded egg that comes with a McGriddle, but you can't have the kiosk do that.

At Chick-fil-A, one of their breakfast sandwiches is an Egg White Grill. Not being afraid of cholesterol, I asked the cashier if I could get one with a whole egg. She said, "Sure, just ask for it." Turns out it's 20 cents cheaper than the egg white version.

Posted by: Kiosk Katey, Robosexual at June 13, 2018 08:21 PM (y09j5)

515 Unfortunately, there kiosks suck. They very poorly designed and figuring out how to customize an order is difficult.

The big problem is that McDonalds has expanded its menu at the cost of quality. Their hamburgers back in the day were okay. Now they are awful. Same with their fries, their shakes, etc.

You want a goo burger--Go to 5 guys or In-and-Out. No damn McRibs or twizler Sundaes. Just good burgers, fries and shakes.

McDonalds is dying man...dying

Posted by: KasperHauserinLondon at June 13, 2018 10:30 PM (k/llo)

516 I'm not sure this will actually save all that much labor at a "slow" McDonalds, you'll still need an order taker at the drive-thru and someone to help the customers who can't figure out how to key in an order for a double cheeseburger with no mustard or onions correctly. Most stores I've gone into seem to only have one or two order takers during most of the day anyhow.

At least it should cut down the number of idiots complaining the order-taker got their order wrong when they're their own order-taker.

Posted by: MoJoeTee at June 14, 2018 07:07 AM (bpfI3)

520 And the bar that constitutes "low skilled" gets lower.

At least in the past, the kids working at Mickey D's got the experience of customer service, of handling cash, of using a register. Usable skills that actually translated up the chain at least a little bit.

No more.
