That's a child, not a dwarf. Dwarfs have the weird proportions.

And a girl with that sort of proportions does not have such delicate arms and neck.

Posted by: AltonJackson at June 11, 2018 09:47 AM (ZQfW9)

95 Well, this is art related. I was hoping for a Goya, but nooooo!

I've been obsessed with Spanish composer Enrigue Granados lately. He first gained fame with his Goyescas, a suites of six dances for solo piano based upon paintings by Goya.

But I wanted to talk about his death on March 24, 1916.

The delay incurred by accepting the recital invitation [to perform at the White House for President Woodrow "The Rat" Wilson] caused him to miss his boat back to Spain. Instead, he took a ship to England, where he boarded the passenger ferry SS Sussex for Dieppe, France. On the way across the English Channel, the Sussex was torpedoed by a German U-boat, as part of the German World War I policy of unrestricted submarine warfare. In a failed attempt to save his wife Amparo, whom he saw flailing about in the water some distance away, Granados jumped out of his lifeboat and drowned. However, the ship broke in two parts and only one sank (along with 80 passengers). Ironically, the part of the ship that contained his cabin did not sink and was towed to port, with most of the passengers, except for Granados and his wife, on board.

114 As noted, this is the wife of Charles I of England.

I read an interesting counterfactual history, which posited Charles I's survival. It could ave easily happened. The radical Puritans in Parliament were getting old & dying off. The younger generation were not so obsessed with the issues that led to the Civil War.

Charles I nearly made it. His troubles became irreversible when his army lost a very minor battle in Scotland-- so obscure nobody even remembers it.

117 *goes off to other threads to pull previous convention posts together plus a little bit of new stuff*

Here ya go, MPPPP. A wall of text
-------
No autographs this year unless you count Kyle Herbert signing the back of my con badge as an autograph. A-kon instituted a new policy that caught me off guard, had to get tickets before trying to get into line for autographs.

Some of the guests were charging for their autograph. For example heard one notorious American voice actor is now charging $90 for his squiggle... this is the guy whom ten years ago would sign anything, even a fan's bare flesh for free.

Dude, forget you. Yeah I coughed up $75 for Leonard Nimoy to sign something. Or $50 for Stan Lee. But you a voice actor? Nope. Take a hike.

A-kon. In DFW. This was #29. Gamers; electronic, card, and tabletop. Cosplay of all flavors including Deadpool and HALO Spartans. Furries. Anime. Comics. And probably at least ten more things I missed.

Along with terrible food inside the convention center, which I should have missed. This stir fry chicken should NOT be crunchy and the rice is not supposed to be mushy. The true crime was the price for that meal, a soda, and a cardboard spring roll - $16.

Parking, yikes. Convention parking lot cheapest if you weren't in a con hotel.. Parking lot that normally charged $6 a day was charging $20.

Two of the crossplayers at the con were hotter looking than oh 80% of the genetic girls in costume attending. How did I know they were crossplaying? Well the deep voices gave it away.

As for the genetic girls. Seriously.. if you are wearing something that bears that midriff please don't look like you are three months pregnant. Or extra boobs sticking out back because your top is that tight. And Dearie, may I call you Dearie; don't wear that martial arts get-up with the thong if your butt cheeks have the firmness of jello. Think of the children!

Junior, not a single guy wearing a fuku this year that I saw was even trying to pass. Two thin African-American men with short cut hair as Sailor Senshis, not convincing. The chubby Sailor Moon with the lumberjack beard, also fail. The skinny Asian dude with a top-knot and a generic school fuku; total failure in so many ways.

173 80 I used to show them side-by-side in class and discuss presentation of the royal personality in art.

OK, at first all I saw was a skinny king and a fat king.

What is going on in the Charles I portrait. Not Charles, he's a perfectly fine skinny king. The guy with the horse. He's got an inappropriate expression going on, as if he's getting a blowjob from whomever the horse is an allegory for.
Posted by: Bandersnatch at June 11, 2018 09:42 AM (fuK7c)

It's all in the presentation. Compare Henry's pose to Charles'. One is full-frontal, starting the viewer straight in the eye. He fills the canvas and there is no background to distract from him. It is all about Henry. He is the center of everything. The very essence of absolute power. His clothing is rich, encrusted with jewels. This face frowns and his eyes glare. It is a withering stare. He is a serious man.

Charles is almost the opposite. He gives us a side pose, and he turns his head and almost glances at us. The face is almost arrogant. His pose is a direct copy of a famous portrait of Louis XIV, a much greater king, that Chas is trying to mimic. (It didn't work.) He is also off-center. The horse represents a dismounted equestrian portrait, an image that goes back to classical times, and symbolizes power. Chas also is showing us his domain, almost like he has something to prove.

For the time (Baroque), Charles' portrait was very much the norm. The Court probably saw nothing negative about it. But compared to the Henry, he pales in comparison. Henry was second to no man who everyone feared. Charles is adopting the trappings of greater men of the past to make him look better. Where the Tudors had a mystique about them, the Stuarts paled in comparison.

It was a very interesting class discussion.

207 It's all in the presentation.

But he's square. Not in the un-hip way, he's portrayed with a square build.

It's apparently more complicated than that. If you didn't vote for 2 years, Ohio would send you a notice asking you if you were still there and still registered. If you responded, you stayed on the voter rolls; if not, you were purged. Thus, not voting didn't have to get you tossed off the rolls, you just had to positively affirm that you wanted to stay on the rolls but didn't vote.

Voting rules are weird. having lots of people registered who never vote or vote infrequently is ripe for mail in ballot abuse, if you ask me.

It would seem quite easy to me in this day and age of electronic data management to get a list of those who have not voted in many election cycles and estimate their ages and then create an Al Gore Rhythm that would find a % of likely nonvoters to request mail in ballots for.
I am not a big fan of write in voting for people who are not actually traveling on the day of voting or in the armed forces.

And present a birth certificate or passport the first time you re-register, yes. Then, when polls close, all voting data goes into the possession of a squad of National Guardsmen with orders to shoot anybody who stops them from transporting it to the sorting location. Let's have no more of this "votes found in the trunk of '97 Buick" nonsense.

366 It would seem quite easy to me in this day and age
of electronic data management to get a list of those who have not voted
in many election cycles and estimate their ages and then create an Al
Gore Rhythm that would find a % of likely nonvoters to request mail in
ballots for.
I am not a big fan of write in voting for people who are not actually traveling on the day of voting or in the armed forces.

Campaigns have been doing this for 30+ years that I'm aware of, and suspect that's what's behind this case to begin with. As a candidate your voter file is the campaign's most valuable asset. Everything about the voter is available publicly except who they voted for. Registered party, what elections they vote in, etc... So a campaign can put together a targeted list of every registered Democrat that' voted in 5 of the last 5 elections, age, etc, and target them specifically. Culling that list keeps costs down for a targeted mailer and walk lists.
Such a list was used to convince the old folks in West Palm beach that Al Gore's campaign used in 2000 to convince them they may have voted for Pat Buchanan by mistake on that butterfly ballot.

The date and circumstances of his rescue or redemption are not known but it was in the 1660s that several missions were sent from England to Algeria and Tunis to ransom English captives, and his first documented presence back in England was in 1669. No details of his captivity were recorded except one fact: he claimed to have grown to 45 inches (1,100 millimetres) during this time, doubling his height after 30 years of age, which he attributed to the buggery he had regularly suffered at the hands of his captors.

The Spanish will take them. Then the word will get out and they'll just head straight for Spain. It's like people no longer get the whole cause and effect thing.

433 No details of his captivity were recorded except one fact: he claimed to have grown to 45 inches (1,100 millimetres) during this time, doubling his height after 30 years of age, which he attributed to the buggery he had regularly suffered at the hands of his captors.

++++

I had no idea that buggery had that effect.

Nah, it's only 40-50 miles from Helena and Great Falls.

But, they make a mean Burger and Hand Cut your Fries to order...place is a dive, but a gem.

Also, they'll fire up the grill anytime you roll in from the river.

439 I guess every town has it's classic burger joint.
Thinking American Graffiti.
Around here it is called Wally's. Been there for years. The only one...not even a local franchise. Just one restaurant. Drive up stalls and or walk-in. Shakes are the best every.

Which then leads into the whole open borders between EU members argument.

Come in through Spain, then go wherever the fcuk you want.

Till other member countries say...Enough!!!

447 Alito on voter rolls:

The dissents have a policy disagreement, not just with
Ohio, but with Congress. But this case presents a question of statutory interpretation, not a question of policy. We have no authority to second-guess Congress or to decide whether Ohio's Supplemental Process is the ideal method for keeping its voting rolls up to date. The only question before us is whether it violates federal law. It does not.

The judgment of the Sixth Circuit is reversed.

Refreshing. 5-4 ruling though. One vote away from anarchy.

453 The comments made me a bit curious about this painting, so I looked at the National Gallery website. Sir Jeffrey was 14 years old when this was painted, and he was indeed a perfectly-proportioned fellow. Henrietta Maria was 24 and is depicted as much taller than she really was. Her outfit is supposed to be a riding dress!
