Washington Post, May 8: Revealing the Name of the Spy Could Put Lives in Danger
Washington Post, Today: Let's Talk About This Stefan Halper Fellow In Detail

Flashback to the Washington Post's report of May 8th, which shrieks about the danger posed by revealing this unknown, completely-anonymous deep-embed NOC's name.

Last Wednesday, senior FBI and national intelligence officials relayed an Murgent message to the White House: Information being sought by House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes could endanger a top-secret intelligence source.

Top White House officials, with the assent of President Trump, agreed to back the decision to withhold the information. They were persuaded that turning over Justice Department documents could risk lives by potentially exposing the source, a U.S. citizen who has provided intelligence to the CIA and FBI, according to multiple people familiar with the discussion and the person's role.

...

The debate over the risk to the source is now at the center of a pitched battle between House Republicans and the Justice Department.

...

For the intelligence agencies, Nunes's request threatened to cross a red line of compromising sources and methods of U.S. intelligence-gathering, according to people familiar with their views. Intelligence officials fear that providing even a redacted version of the information Nunes seeks could expose that person and damage relationships with other countries that serve as U.S. intelligence partners.

Note that a week after they ran this scarifying report, the Washington Post itself released a "redacted version" of the information Nunes sought -- giving a full biographical sketch of the spy, which just happened to match Chuck Ross' details about Stefan Halper.

And of course they got that from their friends at the DOJ.

So: Is this a grave threat to national security or not?

National Security Clown Nose On,

National Security Clown Nose Off.

Oh by the way: Bonus points for a "Republicans Seize."

The role of the intelligence source in the Mueller investigation may now be seized upon by conservative Republicans who have publicly accused the Justice Department and intelligence agencies of overreach and misuse of their surveillance powers.

Now compare their story of May 8th to their new story: Who is this jaunty fellow called Stefan Halper anyway?

Margaret Cleveland has been excellent on this case.

Her latest is about inconsistent claims about when the FBI began its "investigation" -- it clearly had a spy (or spies) attempting to entrap Trump officials before the claimed start of the investigation.

Does that mean they're lying? Well no... but also, yes.

Halper first sidled up to his target Page in mid-July 2016. But CROSSFIRE HURRICANE (a codename designed to draw media attention, I think) didn't begin until July 31st.

So what gives? They had a spy in Trump's camp before they started the investigation?

Well, yes.

The timing of the informant’s initial encounter with Page proves significant because that meeting occurred before the FBI launched Crossfire Hurricane. That detail proves the raison d'etre for the Washington Post's Friday article because, with reporters already cracking the identity of the informant from the Post's earlier articles, it would not be long before someone highlighted that early July meeting. For the last several weeks, the few members of the press bothering to report on the Obama administration's targeting of the Trump campaign have questioned the FBI's contention that it first launched its investigation into the Trump campaign in late July 2016.

The Washington Post gives cover to the revelation that the sting began earlier: "The FBI commonly uses sources and informants to gather evidence and its regulations allow for use of informants even before a formal investigation has been opened. In many law enforcement investigations, the use of sources and informants precedes more invasive techniques such as electronic surveillance."

So... you can start spying before an investigation is even opened?

Spying on a major party's nominee for President? Before you've even decided there's enough for an official investigation?

Well that's problematic.

But even putting that aside -- this means the FBI has been lying.

All true. But for the last two years the FBI maintained first that it did not spy on the Trump campaign and second that it only launched its "investigation" in late July 2016, after Australian officials informed the FBI that in May 2016 George Papadopoulos, a foreign policy adviser to the Trump campaign, blabbed to Alexander Downer, Australia's ambassador to Britain, that the Russians had dirt on Hillary Clinton.

The New York Times promoted this narrative based on the "direct knowledge of the Australian's role" by "four current and former American and foreign officials." The storyline went that Downer only realized the import of Papadopoulos' May revelation after WikiLeaks released emails hacked from the Democratic National Committee server in late July, precipitating the July 31, 2016, start of Crossfire Hurricane. Clearly, the insiders intended to create the impression that the FBI's interest in the Trump campaign stemmed from legitimate concerns its allies had relayed.

Sometimes the FBI Investigates Before Its Investigation

But now we know that the FBI used the term "investigation" in a technical sense, not a colloquial one. Rather than vindicate the FBI, this raises the specter that the FBI extensively targeted Trump campaign officials before its official launch of Crossfire Hurricane.

There are a lot of possibilities, because under the attorney general’s guidelines the FBI may use extensive "information gathering activities" before launching an official "investigation." Under the guidelines, the FBI may make an "assessment" "to obtain information about" a potential threat to national security.

So prior to the start of the official "investigation," the FBI was merely "assessing" the matter... with a spy.

But the FBI has repeatedly lied and claimed the investigation began later, after the Australian information.

Plainly Halper could not have been assigned to spy on Trump aides based on information received from Downer, which came months later.

And yet certain self-proclaimed Bad Boys of Conservatism continue to claim the FBI's claims are the unvarnished truth, whatever those claims turn out to be for this week, and spouting about authoritatively about a case they plainly haven't even done the most basic reading about.

9 I think we'll eventually discover the Trump campaign had numerous FBI agents and CIA and other infiltrators in various roles, some quite highly placed.

Mike Pence, for example.

I keed...maybe.

Anyway, count on finding the campaign rife with government infiltrators. It's the old joke about a Ku Klux Klan meeting where everyone is a government agent.

I think I worked out what is going on with those guys, why the worship of Tapper and their attitude toward this case.

I think they are mostly frustrated wannabe or would be journalists who have an idealized notion of what reporting is or was, and consider Tapper a lone, last example of the True Faith. That they view America and its institutions with such respect and honor that they cannot bear to consider the alternative.

The FBI is full of strong jawed heroes like the TV show. The Justice Department is about selfless icons of justice who serve only the good of America. True journalists are truth-seeking rebels who are owned by no one and dig into whatever the story is, at any cost, no matter who they harm. This is the narrative.

They have a choice between realizing (and admitting) they're wrong about all this, and clinging in a last desperate hope to the dream and, they're choosing weakness.

Face it, they have no idea.

How many times have I ranted about the parlous state of biomedical research? It's largely crap, produced by people who have little or no ability at research,* and almost as bad social "science" research.

* A case in point: "studies suggested drinking promotes health." (I'm all for this, btw.) Turns out that the studies forgot to control for the original health of the participants, and included people in ICUs, hospices, etc., places where the bar service is notoriously bad. So those non-drinkers - who were on the way out - severely skewed the mortality statistics.

This was an embarrassingly amateurish mistake that led to erroneous (or at least unfounded) advice.

Bottom line: those clowns don't have a clue what they're doing. None.

We don't just accuse them. We are convinced of it and the facts and behavior patterns of those defending it provide an ever-expanding dossier of proof of it. There is no suspicion. Crimes and abuses were, in fact, committed. The only question is whether or not we will see justice.

Like say thinking or writing "Trump is not a serious candidate and if he is serious about running he will be a liberal in his POTUS actions" I was guilty of that bad conclusion myself until late in 2016 with the short lists for Scalia replacement and cabinet picks. But I am so very delighted to have been so wrong.

WTF is wrong with 'conservative' columnists and politicians who are not delighted that their worries were for naught and DJT is doing good, maybe even great work in office. Hello guys, you could even take the position of "well we must remain vigilant that he does not swerve into abusing his popularity" IF you would salvage some credibility by admitting that Trump has done good things so far. But no, admitting that you were imperfect would be worse than defending the sleazey, illegal acts of Brennan and company.

324 From Veggie Tales version of Daniel and the lions den...... the song is called oh no, what we gonna do. For some reason this song seems to work with the whole seditious FBI thing..
Oh, No! What We Gonna Do? lyrics
Wisemen:
Oh no! What we gonna do?
The king likes Daniel
More than me and you
Oh, no! What we gonna do?
We gotta get him out of here.
(repeat)

Wisemen#2 & 3:
We could throw him in the dungeon
We could let him rot in jail
We could drag him to the ocean
Have him eaten by a whale

Wiseman#1:
We could throw him in the Tigris
Let him float a while
Then we'll all sit back and watch him
Meet a hungry crocodile

We could put him on a camel's back
And send him off to Ur
With a cowboy hat without a brim
A boot without a spur

We could give him jelly doughnuts
Take them all away
Or fill his ears with cheese balls
And his nostrils with sorbet

We could use him as a footstool
Or a table to play Scrabble on
Then tie him up and beat him up
And throw him out of Babylon

339 People need to remember that the FBI and DOJ were shot through with traitors and conspirators. It's going to take time to flush them all out. Only once they are cleansed can any prosecution reasonably take place.
Any attempt to rush things will ensure more leaks, "accidental" spoilage of evidence and so forth.
Sessions' top priority is to purge his department of conspirators and that really only started to happen in January.

So, why has no one asked the obvious question:
Did they do this to the Romney/Ryan campaign in 2012? I mean its obvious that 2016 wasn't their first rodeo. And Obama's opponents had the unfortunate tendency to have all their sealed court documents mysteriously leaked.
And we know Lois Lerner et. al. screwed over conservative groups during 2012. Are we to believe the IRS was the only rogue agency then?

I thought they could access the system whenever they chose, but always needed to get a FISA approval to actually use the material in a prosecution. After-the-fact approvals were supposedly commonplace in this construction of events.

No, they are not allowed to look at all communications whenever they want. They need a valid FISA warrant to do that.

That was supposed to be the safety in the system. A FISA warrant demands a very high bar of information because you are asserting the person you are targeting is working with a foreign government to harm US interests. The very definition of a spy.

That's why there is so much outrage on our side, the FBI for all intents called Carter Page a Russian spy months after they used him as an asset to spy on Russians for the FBI.

They lied to the FISC. They used phony campaign documents paid for by the DNC, Hillary and quite possibly Obama as the majority of the evidence to get the warrant. That's why the House wants to see the FISA warrant application so badly. That alone is enough to send people, senior people at the DOJ and FBI, to jail.
