Job Market Optimism Now At Highest Level Ever Recorded

Cowbell.

The average American is more optimistic about their ability to find a job under the Trump administration than at any point previously recorded, according to a new poll.

Data released by Gallup on Monday showed 67 percent of Americans believe now is a "good time" to find a quality job. The results were buoyed across gender lines, with 71 percent of males and 59 percent of females decidedly optimistic about the job market.

The data stretched across all age, income, and education groups...

The numbers under President Trump stand in stark contrast to his predecessors. Prior to January of 2017, the number of respondents optimistic about the job market never inched above 50 percent. The poll also found that total optimism about the "availability of good jobs" has increased by 25 percentage points since November 2016.

Meanwhile, per PJMedia, a CBS poll says that 68% of the public gives Trump credit for the economy, with 35% saying he had a "great deal" of responsibility for the good economy, and another 33% saying he's "somewhat" responsible.

Oh, and for the sixth year in a row, the United States was the world's largest producer of fossil fuels.

It's important to remember that stored energy is a substitute for human labor. So the more energy we have, the more machines we can make run, and the more work we do as a species, resulting in more wealth for the human species to share and compete for.

Time is money. Energy is also money.

If you're really determined to do it:

In Windows, implement the German keyboard (you can switch between English and German with Alt-Shift), type the sentence with the umlaut, copy it, then go to https://www.charset.org/html-special-characters, paste it in, then copy the HTML version and paste it back here.

Or, just add an "e" after the vowel to indicate it should have an umlaut.

182 A note many people may miss about the effect on oil and gas prices going up - for many years, it has been taken for granted that an increase in oil and gas prices was a net negative for the US economy, because it impacts consumers hard. BUT now that the US is the largest producer of fossil fuels, that old calculation is stood on its head, and a general increase in oil prices is probably a wash (no net effect) or maybe even a net plus for the economy.

forecasts are out that, due to the ongoing collapse in Venezuela, and the sanctions in Iran, oil prices may get back up around $100/barrel within the next 12 months.

I think this is true of the economists who start from a certain social view point and try to support it with economic analysis.

The ones who start from correct rational assumptions at least do okay in interpreting the past.

207 178 One would think that other oil producing nations would start pumping again, and we would have a glut soon and prices would again fall, just like they did from 1981 to 1987."

Oh, it will happen eventually - but people not exposed to the business don't realize what a capital intensive business it is, and how long the lead times are. I've noticed as a general rule of thumb, that when a company or a nation wants to significantly increase production by a new development program, then money spent today will have an effect on overall production numbers about 5 years from now. (for projects that are just being initiated, like those at the end of a long bust cycle)

the idea that there is a lot of excess oil production that can just be "Turned on" and "turned off" at will is mostly a myth, with the possible exception of Saudi Arabia. (but even they don't have as much excess capacity as many people think)

Luckily the United States still has a core population that was selected for entrepreneurship and being comfortable with risk. That's why no matter what European nations do, they will never reach our growth rates.

Yep. Government has a brake, but doesn't have an accelerator.

And another factor, besides our comfort with risk, is the acceptance that some will fail, and need to try again, and try harder next time. Europeans consider that heartless, and individual failure shameful - paradoxically, guaranteeing that they, as societies, fail.

My (now former) partner and I did that back in the 90's. Talk about total burnout. When the economy went south in 2001 we both finally had time to realize we hated running a firm that big and also that neither one of us was doing any engineering anymore. As people left we didn't replace them and actually got to design things again. Added advantage is I no longer have to take work from people who I know are a law suit waiting to happen (low budget developers mostly) just to make payroll.

Yeah, wage inflation is a real danger, but its a pretty remote one. Right now there's a real lag in wage increases behind the years. For more than a decade wages have been pretty flat or even decreasing in some areas. Other areas they've gone up pretty regularly but overall its been very flat since the new millennium.

Hence Prop. 13 in CA, which limits how fast assessments can be increased.

Owing to Prop. 13, and the confiscatory nature of state taxes, many people are reluctant to upgrade their houses for fear of triggering sheafs of regulations that must be implemented, and property tax re-assessments that can increase taxes tenfold. Better to remain grandfathered than to risk pulling one building permit.

I have always felt that the state /twon should have to be willing to buy your home at the call of the homeowner for the value of the assessed amount. Then the town could sell it.

Under this Witless Tax Fairness (WTF) plan, towns would be very unlikely to over assess and tend to under assess in case they were forced to buy the property and flip it.

354 A woman decides to have a face lift for her 50th birthday. She spends $15,000 and looks and feels pretty good about the results.

On her way home, she stops at a news stand to buy a newspaper. Before leaving, she says to the clerk, "I hope you don't mind my asking, but how old do you think I am ?".

"About 32,"is the reply.'

"Npe! I' exactly 50,"the woman says happily.

A little while later she goes into McDonald's and asks the counter girl the very same question.

The girl replies, "Id guess about 29." The woman replies with a big smile, "Npe, I'm 50."

Now she's feeling really good about herself. She stops at a candy shop on her way down the street.

She goes up to the counter to get some mints and asks the assistant the same burning question.
The clerk responds, "Oh, I'd say 30."

Again she proudly responds, "I'm 50, but thank you !"

While waiting for the bus to go home, she asks an old man waiting next to her the same question.

He replies, "Lady, I'm 78 and my eyesight is going. Although, when I was young there was a sure-fire way to tell how old a woman was. It sounds very forward, but it requires you to let me put my hands under your bra. Then, and only then I can tell you EXACTLY how old you are."

They wait in silence on the empty street until her curiosity gets the better of her.

She finally blurts out, "What the hell, go ahead."

He slips both of his hands under her blouse and begins to feel around very slowly and carefully. He bounces and weighs each breast and he gently pinches each nipple. He pushes her breasts together and rubs them against each other.

After a couple of minutes of this, she says, "Okay, okay.....How old am I ?"

He completes one last squeeze of her breasts, removes his hands, and says, "Madam, you are 50."

Stunned and amazed, the woman says, "That was incredible, how could you tell ?"

"I was behind you at McDonalds"

359 That was an old Woody Allen joke, forget the movie. "Yeah after being married to me for 2 years, my wife decided she wanted to be a lesbian."

I watched a special on Netflix about Bob Hope's career and life and the most surprising part was that Woody Allen built his career around copying Bob Hope. Its hard to see but they did several side by side things and Allen himself specifically mentioned it. The same kind of lines, but delivered in a nebbishy Jew way rather than Bob Hope's smooth delivery.

It made a lot of things very clear in my mind.

361 I have always felt that the state /twon should have to be willing to buy your home at the call of the homeowner for the value of the assessed amount. Then the town could sell it.

Under this Witless Tax Fairness (WTF) plan, towns would be very unlikely to over assess and tend to under assess in case they were forced to buy the property and flip it.

376 351 I loved Austin when I was there in the 70's and '80's. I moved back in 2010 and really tried to like it, but ultimately moved north about an hour because today's Austin is too much like California-which I left in 2010. I rarely go there now for anyghing. Given a choice, I'd rather go up to dfw if I need to do something in a city. The crowds and carpetbaggers have completely changed the character of the place- for the worse.

-----

This is why people in DFW are starting to move north & west. We chose west, and next time we move, will probably go even further west.

That seems fair, or at least at a fairly large fraction of their estimated sale. I mean otherwise, it would be just too easy to dump the home on the state rather than wait for a sale. Sure it might be less, but at least its a guaranteed sale.

Faculty in all 3 of those fields are going to be moonbats. But education STUDENTS, as a group, will be more conservative than sociology or journalism ones, even after going through the program.
They're just as stupid, of course, but not nearly as ideologically driven.
