I know the area where that attack happened very well. Lonely and not much visited.
The cat appears to have been extremely malnourished as at 3-4 years old and 100 pounds it was about half the weight it should've been. The did locate and shoot the cat. A necropsy may add information. I've encountered several cougars in the Cascades and E WA and never had a problem.

Hmm. That is small for a Western cat. The few we have back in Indiana typically run smaller.
I hashed over the weekend with some runners from Eugene. One of them told me they do not take cougars lightly. They run in packs (the hashers, not the cougars), so there is safety in numbers. And they make a lot of noise, being stoopid hashers, so that probably helps deter predators--whether cats or raptors. ;-)

We tend to think of birds as these fragile, delicate things. Which mostly, they are.
But a large raptor in it's prime is one seriously strong and aggressive predator. Fearsome, accurate and that beak and those claws are just simply wicked and terrible in their own right.
Alternatively. We've all seen the video of that seriously pissed off and frightened 15 lb. tabby cat utterly shred the animal control officer who was trying to show it off on TV.

We had a full grown cat that got too close to a crow's nest. He wasn't even in the tree, just on the ground below. They started dive bombing him. He crouched down as low as he could go and started mewing pitifully. We had to go rescue him.
Cats do great against little birds, but against the larger ones, not so much. Unless they can sneak up on them, then all bets are off.

Washington State University has a raptor club that takes in a rehabs all kind of predatory birds. Last time I saw them they were showing several owls. One, a snow owl, was simply gorgeous. Looked so soft but since I like having my fingers attached, I refrained from petting it.

Saw a video of a tiger in India dragging a ten+ foot shark up onto the bank of a river. Tiger had apparently been crossing the river and the shark attacked. Probably a bull shark, they like fresh water.

Somewhere I've saved the devastating letter to the special naval warfare community from the commanding officer and senior NCO about that episode. It's not just me that finds so much of this outrageous, and stunning.
But Brennan and Comey mouthing off - writing BOOKS - in this context breaks new ground. Both guys are fairly likely to be the subject of indictments - high enough chance that ANY defense lawyer, or anyone with common sense, would have a strict policy of STFU.

If someone at the DOJ is leaking what has been obvious for some time now regarding the spying on the Trump campaign then Horowitz, Rosenstein and Sessions already know it.
Whomever is leaking from the DOJ is trying to do damage control by strategic leaking to soften the blow of what's coming. They are actually now in the position of saying that the FBI spied on Trump for good reason.
This is not going to end well for them.

The profound problems of static analysis of any kind. One big thing Malthus' disciple Erlich got wrong is that industrial populations don't maintain pre-industrial growth rates. Industrial populations stabilize. This is a major problem not just for Erlich (because he was wrong) but also from a policy standpoint in first world countries (since most welfare schemes are ponzis).
Never, ever trust any conclusions that come from static analysis. And the dynamic analysis is likely to be wrong, too, because there are too many variables in any interesting problem - like the Socialist Calculation Problem or any climate model.
This is why the market is so awesome. No one has come up with any other away to allow dynamic analysis to manifest. No one knows everything and most people don't know much. But most people know what *they* individually would like to see happen and the market intermediates the data. Brilliant. Those dead white men had some very good ideas.

Beyond that, I actually saw their second game against Winnipeg and was very pleasantly surprised to find it entertaining. And to LV's credit, to my amazement, they actually took shots on a power play - lots of shots. NHL power plays devolved over the years into boring passing clinics, with few shots, and not much excitement.
I broke my rule of not watching hockey before Memorial Day (an old joke that I used on the young'ins who never got it, of course, never having known an NHL season that wasn't 9 months long.

I've never been that shot in the ass with the idea of a balanced budget requirement. It sounds great, but they would much rather raise taxes than cut spending. Balancing the budget would be fine (deficits are just a stealth tax anyway), but I think it is the wrong approach.
I would rather see a law stating that, except for military spending during a period of declared war, the federal budget must not exceed 15% of GNP.

Got so weird that an item was placed on the state ballot, initiative item, to restore very limited licensed hunting of mountain lions. Of course it was defeated (pretty odd response to a short-lived anomaly in the animal kingdom). Biologists - acting as actual scientists - admitted they had not the slightest idea what was going on.
It all stopped soon enough. But in the years after there have been serious attacks, and not way up in the mountains. Recall mountain bikers getting attacked at dusk in a county park in eastern Irvine - hardly a rural area.

My father fixed that by raising a pit bull from a eight week old puppy with six cats. Funny as hell watching him try to climb a tree. Dude thinks he is a cat. But don't let anything, person or other *strange* cat attempt to mess with "his" cats. Full on rabid pit bull engaged.
Dog is a big pussy otherwise. Pap is 82 this year and he still surprises me with his common sense solutions.

I've enjoyed watching hawks around here do the "death from above" dive bomb, while dive catch move. They're pretty smart and when we were mowing or plowing, scaring up field mice and other varmimts, they'd light on top of the power poles, then swoop down like bats out of hell on feeling vermin.
Their vision is high resolution indeed. They can spot some little field mouse scampering from well in the distance.

The classical music playlist I hope to make available to the Horde sometime has reached about 800 of its projected 1000 pieces, representing the works of some 380 different composers so far. It includes all periods from Renaissance to contemporary and all genres from orchestral to vocal to instrumental.
While I'm in no great rush to finish it, it may be done by the end of the summer. For me, it's an educational experience.

SEATTLE - The two mountain bikers did what they were supposed to do when they noticed a mountain lion tailing them on a trail east of Seattle.
They got off their bikes. They faced the beast, shouted and tried to spook it. After it charged, one even smacked the cougar with his bike, and it ran off.
It wasn't enough, authorities said.
As they stood trying to catch their breath, the cougar returned, biting one of them on the head and shaking him, Capt. Alan Myers of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Police said Sunday.
The second cyclist ran, and the animal dropped the first victim and pounced on him, killing him and dragging him back to what appeared to be its den.
"They did everything they were supposed to do," King County sheriff's Sgt. Ryan Abbott said. "But something was wrong with this cougar."

I think the mustelids beat the felines by a bit in the pound-for-pound predation thing. Cougars can kill elk and moose, but they get up to 200 pounds or so. Wolverines kill moose, and they only get to about 60 pounds. And the smaller ones (stoats, minks, weasels (slap or otherwise)) are pretty dangerous, too.

I think BMW thinks of itself as the "Goldilocks" luxury car. More reliable than Audi, less reliable than Lexus, more expensive than Volvo, less expensive than Mercedes, haughtier than Jaguar, less so than Rolls Royce.
Unless you get one of those circa-2000-2005 cars where all the electronics fail, in which case it's less reliable than Audi.

Back in my 20s, I wanted some good work boots. I was told Wolverine boots were the best. Expensive. Well, the sole came off the first pair in no time, and I traded 'em in for another pair. Same thing.
IIRC, they were having quality control problems. Anyway, I just said the hell with it and have been buying El-Cheapo work boots ever since. If they wear out soon, no great loss.

BMW's were always supposed to be a driver's car. And the older ones, up to the millenium, were actually built to be worked on by their owners, if they had a mind to. try that with some Japanese Luxury car. Or just about any Japanese car. But not any more. BMW changes their building approach and now they are just like everyone else.
And MB owners have cognitive dissonance. There are ALWAYS things going wrong with Mercedes Benz's. Their reliability is only as good as the extensive preventive maintenance you are supposed to perform....at the dealer.
And don't get me started with Audi's. They are fun to drive and very expensive to maintain. Everything is a thousand dollars.

A group of accidentally thrown together people move through alternate realities. Only they were trying to make a coherent plot as to why it was happening.

I had a string of 850s and liked them rather a lot. Their auto transmissions in the early '90s weren't wonderfully reliable (powerplants are a different story). The clutch in the '93s was dreadful - felt like pudding and the friction point was nearly impossible to hit reliably. The 97 with which I replaced it was a dream except the light bulbs. All Volvos of that era just eat bulbs. You know a real Volvo owner by how many spare bulbs he carries.
I quit liking them so well when they downsized and went from boxy to obnoxiously curvy. The early oughts also weren't great from a reliability standpoint, but I haven't looked into it recently.

The General Theory was one of the hardest things I had to get through. Clear writing was not one of Keynes' strong suits. This, I think, is a reason for the absence of consistent or straightforward interpretation of his theories. He was wrong about a lot of things, but he wasn't evil like the communists.

Steve Keen has some decent arguments that Keynes was bastardized by classical economists focusing too much on equilibrium models.
I cringe whenever someone tries to quote Keynes line, "in the long-run we're all dead." They inevitably take it out of context.
And yes, Machiavelli is another who is completely misunderstood.

Yes, which most "Keynesians" these days ignore. But the fact is that government is not supposed to be generating profits (surpluses).
The only way to actually control government spending and deficits is for the money to be on a gold standard, so it can't just be printed up any time the government wants to. Outside of that, there's not really any way to control government spending - not until the bond market just brings the whole shebang down, of course.

And Goldberg was just as much of a lying bitch as Dyson, her opening statement was primarily a series of distorted ad hominem attacks on Peterson. If I were the moderator I would have stopped her and ask her if she wanted to continue or be escorted from the venue.
I an incensed that a debate "moderator" allowed that kind of behavior. Stay home and wank next time, loser.
Peterson is old school and tried to stay on topic. He might have done better to explain why Goldberg started by lying and demanded an apology. I think a lot of the audience were aware of it anyway, but some of them probably hadn't heard enough of Peterson to know she was lying.

Surely. Keynes may well have been trying to do the right thing and he certainly saw potential for some of the great evil that we actually got in the mid twentieth. I think one of his greater contributions was the notion of sticky wages preventing equilibration and worsening unemployment. I think he might have given that particular problem too much weight, but he identified the problem extraordinarily well.

First, you're right about Buick's success in China being it's salvation in continued production.
Pontiac's problem though, was chaos in it's designs going back at least a dozen years before their demise.
They did not have a common design concept within their lineup. Not even a little.
At the end, their G-3 looked nothing like the Holden based G-6, the Solstice was unique to itself (although cloneufactured for Saturn), they'd already dropped the Firebird, and it was never resurrected as was the Camaro. The Grand-Am became a dated relic, and they'd long since lost the Bonneville and Catalina full sized sedans and coupes.
The Pontiac Brand steered an essentially rudderless course through the last dozen years of it's life.
Here's the pity, and the joke is on GM. Both Pontiac and Oldsmobile produced some of the finest variants of both the small and large block V-8s, with both having benchmark engines passionately sought after by hot rod builders of every kind.
Pontiac, being the first "next step up" from Chevrolet, also penned some of the finest styling of the GM fleet in the mid to late '60s, and through the '70s. Their motto was "We Build Excitement", and there for a couple of decades...they did.
Then, the EPA stepped, ruined all the fun, and pulled the factory's fangs.
Went steadily downhill, after that.

Venezuelan oil has an additional factor... it's considered 'dirty' crude. Lots of contaminants that take extra refining to remove, so yeah, they have LOTS of oil, but it's bottom-shelf stuff. You buy it when nothing better is available.

Close. Venezuelan crude is both "heavy" and "sour".
The only refineries set up to deal with it are in Venezuela, but they can't even keep up with price controlled domestic demand-they have to re-import refined products ( like Iran).
The only refineries that can handle it are on Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles, off the Venezuelan coast; and along the US Gulf Coast.
There was one in the US Virgin Islands, but was closed because nobody wanted to invest in a refinery set up for an unstable supply.

I never saw any of it coming.
Most times a surprise. At least for a moment and then on reflection I'd realize that, yeah I should've seen that coming.
Couple times I had no clue what the F*ck just happened or why. Or I knew what happened but could find no reason for it.
Some people forget that there is a bit of luck in everything that happens to you. For good or for ill.
This is why I don't disparage people who are down on their luck unless I know the exact circumstances and who/what exactly was at fault.
If good luck can come in string then so can bad and sometimes that string can be for years. Seen it. Experienced it.
So be kind to others and never presume to know that they deserved what happened to them or what they were like before life kicked them in their ass . . a couple dozen times.

Those two factors have ruled the roost since... forever. That alone is the chief reason why there are NO permanent signs of civilization (beyond ruins) on that continent.
Chinese colonization *may* change that, but I doubt it. The people of Africa are cannon fodder until there are some major (and permanent) changes to the mind-set there.

There is no question that the English political legacy has been invaluable to its former colonies and is far superior to that of Spain, France, or the Netherlands.

Back then, Pontiac was a very formidable brand in the world of muscular cars.
Having poked around the GM stable quite a bit in my yoot, I'll postulate this.
Late '60s Pontiacs were the highest of build quality in the GM lineup.
Not "most luxurious". Or, "most loaded". Quality. As in, absence of manufacturing flaws, failures, superior fit and finish, etc.
That's what makes the demise of the brand, such a damned shame.

It doesn't take research to identify ad hominem attacks, which don't require dishonesty to be forbidden from debates.
If a moderator in my Jr High School debate club had been that bad, they would have been kicked out of the club.
The "pro" side even disavowed their side's position within minutes and then devoted the rest of the discussion to separate contentions regarding feminism and structural racism, as well as their ignorant hostility to one of the other debaters.
I think I have only ever seen one debate handled worse than this, and that one made national news because it was SO BAD no one even attempted to discuss the contention at hand.

There have been a number of times I have driven through or home from Indy on race day, and never even realized it till I was halfway home that, "Oh yeah, the Indy 500 was today" The traffic didn't really tip it off; perhaps if you were on that side of the city which I wasn't.
Also, I cannot promise, but in many cases, the Indy 500 is blacked out up there, so you may not even have to worry about busy restaurants/bars or anything.
