Was It All a Set-Up, From the Very Start?

First, let's check in with Kim Strassel.

Was Trump's Campaign 'Set Up'?

At some point, the Russia investigation became political. How early was it?

By Kimberley A. Strassel
May 17, 2018 7:06 p.m. ET

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes appeared on "Fox & Friends" Tuesday, where he provided a potentially explosive hint at what's driving his demand to see documents related to the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Trump-Russia probe. "If the campaign was somehow set up," he told the hosts, "I think that would be a problem."

Or an understatement. Mr. Nunes is still getting stiff-armed by the Justice Department over his subpoena, but this week his efforts did force the stunning admission that the FBI had indeed spied on the Trump campaign. This came in the form of a Thursday New York Times apologia in which government "officials" acknowledged that the bureau had used "at least one" human "informant" to spy on both Carter Page and George Papadopoulos. The Times slipped this mind-bending fact into the middle of an otherwise glowing profile of the noble bureau--and dismissed it as no big deal.

...

She notes that in March 2016, Comey claimed there were "counterintelligence" concerns with some Trump personnel, probably referring to both Paul Manafort and Carter Page, who had just joined the Trump campaign.

And lo and behold:

Sometime in April, the law firm Perkins Coie (on behalf the Clinton campaign) hired Fusion GPS, and Fusion turned its attention to Trump-Russia connections. The job of any good swamp operator is to gin up a fatal October surprise for the opposition candidate. And what could be more devastating than to paint a picture of Trump-Russia collusion that would provoke a full-fledged FBI investigation?

...

The question Mr. Nunes's committee seems to be investigating is what other moments--if any--were engineered in the spring, summer or fall of 2016 to cast suspicion on Team Trump..

I would remind everyone that Hillary Clinton had an FBI criminal investigation on her -- oh, I mean a "matter" -- and she was desperate for a Narrative Changers where she could say "Oh, well the FBI is investigating Trump, too!"

And Comey, of course, complied.

Now, as far as the "set up," what she's surely referring to is the strange and sudden interest of people connected with the CIA and MI-6 in becoming pals with fringe players like Carter Page, George Papadopolous, and a third unnamed Trump staffer.

Some of these people even told George Papadopolous things like "The Russians have Hillary's emails." Maybe to encourage him to reach out to the Russians; maybe to get him to mention that fact to an Australian diplomat.

But there's another possible "set-up," too.

Chuck Ross reports on the connections between the man who accompanied the Russian lawyer/Fusion GPS client Natalia Veselnitskya to the the Trump Tower meeting and... Hillary Clinton, if you can believe such a thing.

Remember, Veselnitskya was initially denied a visa to come to the US. Probably because she's a known Russian intelligence operator.

And yet someone in the State Department that Hillary Clinton had only recently departed from re-reviewed the matter and issued this known Russian operator a visa.

Now why would Hillary Clinton's friends in the State Department grant a visa to a known Russian agent after lower-level people had denied it for cause?

Let's take a look at how Veselnitskya might have rated that kind of pull in the State Department:

The Russian-American lobbyist who attended the infamous Trump Tower meeting had contacts with members of Hillary Clinton's inner circle and knew Clinton herself, he told the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2017.

"I knew [Clinton]; I knew some people who worked on her campaign," the lobbyist, Rinat Akhmetshin, told the Senate Judiciary Committee in closed-door testimony on Nov. 14.

A transcript of the testimony was released along with other meeting attendees on May 16.

Akhmetshin, a former Soviet military intelligence officer, also said his attorney, Edward Lieberman, knows Clinton well. Lieberman's late wife, Evelyn Lieberman, was a close confidante of Clinton's. At one point, Akhmetshin said he was not a fan of President Donald Trump's family.

The revelation of Akhmetshin's Clinton links are significant because he has been portrayed as a possible conspirator in a collusion scheme between Trump's campaign and Russian government.

If it's illegal for Trump Jr. to meet with Akhmetshin, why is it not illegal for Clinton to meet with him? He says he "knows" her; that means they've met.

For what purpose?

To talk about yoga routines and planning her daughter's wedding? You know, the usual code for Illegal Schemes?

Could it be that this Soviet military intelligence officer was helping Clinton in her scheme to set up Trump's associates?

No one knows for certain but the answer is Yes Definitely Of Course.

nah. if it's mentioned at all, it will be in report 3, about the FBI/DOJ/IC actions to Get Trump.

But I expect a whitewash.

8 because the only real thing the left has said about trump collusion is that it's a crime to get stolen, by a crime, information from a ruskie. You know, liberal law thinking. So, it should be a part of an investigation as to who breached her emails and who got podestas stuff. and of course any yucky stuff that podesta is into.

Posted by: Krystal Slider Enthusiast at May 18, 2018 05:08 PM (sB8d1)

9 Hillary was colluding with the Russians all along, as was Obama and his merry band of criminals in the WH.

Perhaps Vlad was paying Barry back for his "flexibility," whatever the hell that was.

11 I'll need to find it again, but someone recently tweeted a picture of the Clintons right before the Inauguration where they are literally standing next to that Russian lawyer lady that met with Don Jr. WTF? Why was she there - who's guest was she - and why is she chatting with the Clintons?

The only way to right this is if these agencies are completely gutted, and several dozen people are convicted and sentenced to long stretches in Leavenworth. And that will ultimately mean Hillary and Obama.

Will not happen. And the nation will rot further.

17 IIRC Veselnitskaya also met with Fusion GPS both before and after the Tower meeting.

Which would open the question of whether that entire meeting was a setup.

If the investigation was sincere, which, of course, it wasn't.

21 I think that it is pretty clear that a "Russian-American lobbyist" who is also a former intelligence officer has connections to the Russian government. That he says that he is no fan of Trump's family is an interesting slip. There goes the narrative that Russia was agitating for Trump's election.

32 "We know that Hillary Clinton was illegally exonerated. We knew that a year ago," the former prosecutor said.

"We know that there was a substantial effort to frame the current president of the United States with crimes by infiltrating his campaign and then his administration with spies that the FBI had set upon them."

"We have learned that the crimes were committed by the FBI, senior members of the Department of Justice, John Brennan, Mr. [James] Clapper, Mr. [James] Comey and others associated with the Democratic Party," he continued. "And Donald Trump and his associates committed no crimes."

"Categorically and unequivocally, it has been proved that the FBI, in violation of all guidelines, all legislation - and I believe they committed crimes in doing so - purposely sent people into the Trump campaign to plant false information, then force that information to be forwarded back to CIA, and then funneled to the FBI, to be used as false information in FISA applications," he said.

"Everybody involved in that process, who knowingly participated, committed a crime," DiGenova concluded.

He explained that "criminal referrals have already been made."

"And I suggest that Mr. Brennan, who loves to make comments about the process, get himself a good lawyer not a good writer," DiGenova said.

I haven't heard yet a convincing alternate explanation for that meeting.

If this were a Hollywierd script, someone at the meeting would have realized this was a distraction and rushed to the security office to see if any cameras had been painted over.

Because it was a distraction, and a cliche one.

2016 April 19 Fusion GPS Mary Jacobi goes to WH

2016 April 25 Clinton campaign first payment to Perkins Coie, funneled to FusionGPS

2016 April 25 FBI James Baker and DOJ FISA attorneys [which would include Steve Ohr] meet at WH

2016 May 16 Fusion GPS Hires Nellie Ohr [Nellie is the wife of DoJ NSD attorney Stephen Ohr].

The Ohrs were the conduit for FIS Data, and Steele was hired to repackage the data to disguise its actual origin.

It makes the question to lefties of why Mueller has shown no interest in the Fusion GPS lawyer or the people that rolled out the red carpet for her all that much more fun.

I think that's the real exposure fear. If this sucker went all the way to the top (and I would bet it did), then Obama's implication in all of this would do even more damage to the long-term interests of the deep state than perhaps anything else. His legacy has been systematically dismantled, his cronies are struggling and his part has gone completely daft. "Deep states" (i.e. totalitarian governments) do indeed collapse of their own weight/incompetence.

What arises from the ashes depends entirely on how strong a culture of individual responsibility managed to survive the ordeal of the totalitarians' reign.

140 The best part about that obvious bait and switch meeting is that it had the lefties crowing that it just proved, proved, proved that the Trump campaign had the "intent to collude." Disregarding, of course, that "intent" without an actual crime, and there is no crime of collusion.

It was, but like most things the libs had only a superficial grasp on what is functionally what.

They intended to prosecute this by appearances and innuendo. They just don't have the power to make appearances be all there is anymore.

They tried really hard. They gave shouts of joy when every superficial appearance was revealed--like Behar on the View.

And then combine that with the incompetence that comes from over confidence. I think they thought they had planted enough dirt, and their relationship with the press would carry them the rest of the way.

Since about the 90s, Democrat politics has not been about policy, but "messaging".

151 By the way, the breathtaking reports from last night that there would be criminal referrals coming with the IG report are not news.

The IG is forced by law to report any criminal findings during his investigation to the DOJ. This is why Huber was brought in and people like Strzok, Page, Ohr, Baker and other started losing theirs. This started last July.

As I've been saying for months, you don't bring in a federal prosecutor to investigate. You bring in a federal prosecutor to prosecute.

165 " what other moments--if any--were engineered"

that's the right word. This was not a slipshod operation. These things are planned by "engineers" with their advanced degrees in espionage and psychological warfare. The players they used were known operatives and the FBI/CIA etc. had developed relationships with them.

And now Mueller is the demolition man, blowing up every investigation to what is really going on, probably blowing up evidence (like with a cloth) and perhaps granting even more immunity to the criminals. They brought him back from the dead cuz he knows where all the bodies are buried ... he still has the shovel.

Fun story, met George Tenet leaving the Operations Center at Langley on our tour of that agency. Getting some beers later at the hotel, we saw that we started bombing Bosnia that day. We met the guy literally on his way to or returning from his final brief with Clinton before launching aircraft.

It's looking like it was all part of the same huge conspiracy. I have to give credit to Trump who is patiently watching it unfold, and unfolding it is. Their own leaks are now, instead of attacking, are defensively admitting their crimes but with some spin, which isn't going to save them. It's awesome. There's also a big story developing about a British private intelligence agency/company who seem to be up to their ears in this. They have pictures of Brennan visiting their offices this year.

228 If the FBI learned from the CIA that a low-level campaign volunteer told an Australian diplomat that the Russians had Hillary's missing e-mails*, it would seem to me that the usual procedure would be (1) to talk to the volunteer himself to check the veracity of the hearsay, and (2) if concerned about it, talk to the Trump campaign about the potential problem. But what did they do? They kept it top secret and used it as an excuse to spy on the campaign. This is clearly a blatant abuse of power.

*E-mails anout yoga and Chelsea's wedding that, except for their use as a justification for domestic surveillance against the opposition candidate, are of no concern whatsoever to the FBI, despite the fact that Hillary's people bleachbitted her server and smashed the BlackBerries to prevent anyone from finding out what was in them.

252 They pivoted to Russiagate as soon as Trump won. The next day Clinton and Obama pointed to Russia.

Ya know, something I've been meaning to mention for awhile is this whole continued meltdown/resistance thing.

It is bcz Trump won, yes. But also bcz they feel the election was STOLEN from them. If the press hadn't told them 80% they'd win, by a landslide, I don't think it would have been as fierce a backlash.

It is the difference between a 4 yo asking for a lollipop and you telling them maybe; vs. giving them a lollipop, letting them take off the wrapper and just as their about to lick it, snatching it away.

The responses you would get would be worlds apart. The length of the temper tantrums they'd throw, the intensity of them, and the memory length, also very different.

In my living memory, never was a side promised so much, without any doubt, and then once they lost, immediately blame another country. There are all the other factors we know, but that's my little theory about the generation/population response at large.

I don't think it is the sole reason for this insanity...not at all. But I do think it is a contributing factor. The press caused so much of this mess, but I've expressed my contempt for them is endless.

Both Obama and Romney spoke and Romney looked relaxed, comfortable, gracious and spoke articulately and with humor. His body language and posture projected confidence--confidence that he was going to be the next president.
Obama looked uncomfortable and beaten. He hemmed and hawed and "ummed and ahhed" and wasn't the least bit presidential--and he was already president. He looked like a loser, shrinking before your very eyes....
He reallly looked and sounded like he knew his days were numbered.

I've since lost most respect for Romney, but something happened with that election....

Read up on Escobar and how he totally corrupted the Colombian Government. Then read up on Las Pepes. If Trump is unable to clean this up an American version of Las Pepes will arise and things will gat messy for those who think that they are above the law. Because at that point there be plenty of folks who realize eaquality under the law presumes equal application of the law, so people will go outside the law to apply it to those who have set themselves outside of the law by being above it.

If one wants a good parallel to this crap just think of Hillary Clinton
as the leader of a Cartel. She is America's Pablo Escobar.

Read up on Escobar and how he totally corrupted the Colombian
Government. Then read up on Las Pepes. If Trump is unable to clean
this up an American version of Las Pepes will arise and things will gat
messy for those who think that they are above the law. Because at that
point there be plenty of folks who realize eaquality under the law
presumes equal application of the law, so people will go outside the law
to apply it to those who have set themselves outside of the law by
being above it.

Good quote - and I think one thing that the left, inexplicably, fails to understand about Trump is that he is a very old-school politician. As in, he rewards the people who support him lavishly, and he attacks the people who attack him vigorously. You would think that would be common, but it seems like over the last few decades we've been afflicted with a generation of politicians who don't even understand that kind of thinking anymore! It's idiotic, apply the opposite of that to foreign policy and you have Obama and Kerry's position on everything.

I think that people were correct at the time of the election to point out that Trump *could* have been captured by the left on some key issues - and then glory be, look what happened!! The Left had to go totally ballistic and attack him on Every Little Thing he Did, even on the few times when he tried to throw him a bone. What 's a born counterpuncher gonna do - reward his enemies? This makes my blood boil. Which party has historically been cozier with the Russians? Virtually every ideologically-motivated traitor or spy has been a Democrat. Ted Kennedy through surrogates blatantly attempted to collude with the Russians to subvert the foreign policy of a sitting President. Now THERE'S your Russian collusion.

I assume half of the Democrat Party colludes with the Russians, the other half with the Chinese, unless neither one is sufficiently anti-American for them.

429 More thoughts on Trump's political inclinations - many of us were worried before the election because he perceived that in the past, he hadn't shown any particularly conservative frame of mind, although he also never participated in the typical leftist BS that most celebrities did.

But what we, and I know what I, never took into account the possibility that we could catch an incredibly lucky break BECAUSE the left were such idiots! They had every chance to get him on their side on some things - and instead they chose to go "OMYGAWD RACIST SEXIST OMYGOD" and they drove him into our arms. And all we had to do, on our part, was act decent.

And of course, he's not going to reverse this now, because the Left has too much foolish pride to ever try and start playing nice now, and Trump has too much stubbornness to ever let his sworn enemies off the hook so easy. As we keep saying, if you plan to kill the King, you had damned sure better kill the King.

Heh. I remember I got under ChemJeff's skin when he said Georgia would go blue in the election and I told him I'd eat crow if it did and film it wearing a wrestling mask but he would have to do the same if it went red.

He was not amused that evening.

3a. not necessarily sliders
3b. patties small enough to cook with nice char but not not be squishy in the middle
3c examples are 5 guys and burger fi double burgers and shake shack.

Slider Science conclusion: getting a huge patty that's basically raw and squishy is old and ready to die and needs to make way for the new style of tasty, crusty, not quite rare at all double stacks and sliders.

Make no mistake their fabricated Russian narrative was suppose to cost him the election and if didn't work they could black mail his administration into complete submission waving around the fake Dossier. They didn't count on Trump's lack of corruption and his lack of ties with corrupted politicians. They had a clean candidate they tried to set up and it would of worked if it weren't for the Patriot at NSA. Make no mistake Trump has the full use of Mossad to investigate our corrupt intelligence agencies, it might take years but those traitors will be outed if not charged with crimes. Someone should of told that piece of filth Brennon about a common problem with spread sheets it's called circular reference, you can't include the cell you are referencing in the formula. Time to disbanded the CIA cut ties with Europe and hand over our foreign security to a new agency trained by the Mossad.

YOU might be using quality lean ground beef. That's the first mistake from which there is no recovery no matter what junk people throw on it.

524 Brennan would be huge if he went to jail. Hope I am wrong but I see wrist slapping for him, Clapper, Lynch, Rice. Oblahblay and hillary won't be touched. Maybe Comey or McCabe if they get into a slap fight.

My favorite wish is Mueller in jail, he is up to his nostrils in this crap, and is acting as the protection.

I agree Jack, but the CIA ran the op and are letting the 'FBI take the blame for the failed setup so my question is this-- will some agents come forward with evidence against Crapper and Brennan? Will Wray let the FBI be burned down to the stench of corruption or will he do the right thing and expose the corrupt CIA operating on American soil?

525 Set-up of course it was a set-up. What I would like to know is whatever made them think it would work?

Comey might. He's in legal jeopardy too and he knows that Brennan is trying to leave him holding the bag.

And if there is one thing James Comey is concerned about, it's James Comey.

C'mon, enough with the goal post moving.

If the head of the CIA is indicted for the first time in the nations
history for running an op against the candidate of the opposition party
it is indeed a yuuuge deal.

Hopefully you'll remember that this has been my standard since it began. You even agreed with me that nothing would happen to Obama or Hillary the first time we discussed it. My position remains the same.

No matter what you think, say that you expect them to be held accountable. Getting the nothing-here-worth-prosecuting thing is one of their last plays and low expectations play into it.

The Media and its fellatio-istic relationship with the Democrat Party?

Just a wild-assed guess.

534 Weird thing you can do with mushrooms. Use nonstick pan.

Put fresh sliced mushrooms in pan. Med heat. No oil no water. Let them cook like 10 12 minutes. They start to stick and drives moisture out. Take really good balsamic vinegar. Pour into pan.
Mushrooms suck up all the balsamic plump and juicy. Great on burgers.

538 So if the FBI was investigating Trump even before he got the nomination, why should we not think they were investigating all the others as well?
