Mixed-to-Sad Reviews for "SOYLO: A Soy Wars Soyry"
Ethan Van Sciver talks about some of the lackluster reviews here.
Now, Ethan Van Sciver has been taking the piss out of Soy Wars, as he calls it, for months. So maybe you can't take his word for it. He's comedically invested in Soylo: A Soy Wars Soyry being a cringefest. It will make for funny videos. So here's the guy whose word I take for it: Emergency Awesome. I'm not saying Emergency Awesome is a shill. However, like most nerd culture YouTubers (such as the Nerd Crew), he tends to be skewed towards the positive when talking about these dumb movies and shows. His verdict -- and bear in mind, his basic mode is to be charitable and more positive about these things than they warrant -- is to call it "Just fine," and, in ranking it with all other Soy Wars properties, including some cartoon and the famously awful Star Wars Holiday Special, he puts it near the bottom of the list, only above The Phantom Menace, that cartoon I never heard of, and the Star Wars Holiday Special. When the nicest thing you can say is that it's "Just fine" and that the disaster that was feared has been averted, and then the only real Soy Wars movie you'll say it's better than is the widely-reviled The Phantom Menace -- well, that's not the sort of enthusiasm from a nerd-culture YouTuber that I would expect from anything halfway decent. Nice company, Disney. Would be a shame if anything bad were to 'appen to it. Oh, and Kathleen Kennedy? The Force is Female, huh? Maybe not for too much longer. Oh, BTW: Soy Wars just got even soyrrier-- Apparently they've now confirmed that Lando Calrissian, who spent most of the Empire Strikes Back macking on Leia and not Han or C3PO or Boba Fett (he was there) or even LOBOT, is "pansexual."Lando Calrissian, one of Star Wars' most popular characters recently reimagined by actor Donald Glover, is pansexual. Lawrence Kasdan -- the co-writer behind The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, The Force Awakens and the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story -- told Huffington Post that Lando is "pansexual," meaning that he's "not limited in sexual choice with regard to biological sex, gender, or gender identity," according to one definition. The Ghostbusters Gambit did not work for Ghosbusters. I mean, the fake Ghostbusters, obviously. But maybe Kathleen Kennedy really liked that play and wants to see if she can make it work where Amy Pascal failed. Meanwhile, Disney's putting out the word that Lando will be the next standalone soyry. Van Sciver suggested it will be called Lando Calrissoyan. This seems to be be pre-spinning the expected fan rejection of Alden Ehrenreich as a weedy version of Han Solo by promising, "Hey, ignore Han Soylo in his own movie. We've got that guy you like coming up in the next one. And he's pansexual, too!!!!" Disney seems to be following its subsidiary Marvel Comics' down the rabbit hole of making entertainment which have traditionally skewed heavily male in appearance acceptable for a "phantom audience" that just doesn't exist, an audience consisting of women, men who feel shame about Toxic Masculinity, and Buzzfeed editors. Good luck with that. Looking forward to the point when they recut these movies and add new CGI effects and even more female characters in charge of bullying cuck male characters: The Last Jedi: The Jezebel Blog Edition.

That makes a lot of sense when you consider their audience. Dumb luck your way into a video of yourself jumping off of the roof in an Easter bunny costume going "viral" on the youtubes and you're a cultural icon overnight and can make millions monetizing your videos (so long as they're politically approved).
It's what these kids dream of, so it makes sense that Han would do it in a year or two.

I saw the first one at the drive in theater. I couldn't wait for the second. I think I went to see the third one twice so I didn't miss anything.
I rented the first of the Disney ones because we had a free rental at Redbox. I turned the one with the blind Asian space ninja off before we even got halfway. I haven't cared a bit about seeing the one where Luke is milking the alien bird thing. I don't care about this one.
The thing is, I've got two kids who are right at the age when they should be nuts about Star Wars, and I'd rather them watch Spongebob Squarepants. At least they're clever.

The mysterious Vader turned into a whiny brat. The "good friend" of Ben Kenobi became an obnoxious, hormonal teenager rebelling against his authority figure. That's a complete waste of a character.

The prequel quotes have all become memes because they sound like a 14 year old trying to feign wisdom, when not attempting to get jabs in against Bush. Which is a fairly accurate description of Lucas's writing, imo.

Strangely, I was able to grow up with Star Wars. The hints offered about the fall of the Republic fascinated me and when the prequels were announced I imagined a tale of intrigue, romance, doomed heroism and betrayal.
Instead, we got...what we got.
Years later, I was venting about this to my long-suffering wife and she said: "Why don't you fix it? Write your own version?"
When I pointed out the copyright issues she waved them away. "Fifty Shades of Grey started as Twilight fan fiction. The author pulled out the supernatural elements but the characters are the same. People ate it up."
I realized she was right, and that's how "A Man of Destiny" got started. My biggest problem is that the real man character should have been THE EMPEROR. He's the one rising to power. He's the guy who drives the story. What moves him? What makes him tick?
We never find out. He just cackles a lot.
So that's what I wrote. I set it in space, and went my own way with how the Commonwealth is set up, created factions and then let it rip. Folks seem to like it over on the book thread.
Ace...Ace...you need to check this thing out. I guarantee you will like it. Oregon Muse did. He read the weakest of the four books (the first) which had to move slow because I'm setting the scene. Then things get real.
It's not Star Wars fan fiction, but it is Star Wars as it should have been. Different, deeper characters, most of whom have no parallel to Star Wars, but we do have The Hero, the Rogue, The Princess, The Wise Knight and so on. Good stuff.

Look, I'm not about shameless self-promotion, but the point I'm driving home like a deranged meth-filled woodpecker is that This Book Fixes Star Wars.
There's no Force, but there is a venerable military Order sworn to defend the Commonwealth that's become corrupt and near-sighted. They botch things big time.
There's also a series of political disputes that escalate into open civil war that tears known space apart.
Oh, and this isn't some stupid civil war between clones and droids, it's visceral total war pitting trillions of people against each other in a hideous meat grinder. One of my favorite scenes (suggested by Red Letter Media, in fact) is when a refugee shuttle arrives at a crowded space port. The screens are scrolling along the walls with the names of the latest casualty figures. Scrolling and scrolling.
As the war grinds on, everything changes. The capital gets grimmer, darker. Old rules fall by the wayside and one man is ready to take advantage of the collapse of order.
Fun Fact: The Man of Destiny was started in 2013, long before anyone thought of Trump as a candidate, and I actually wrote a character wanting to "Make the Commonwealth Great Again."
Oddly prescient, I'd say.

Yeah, I began reading SF a bit over 60 years ago. I thought aliens were neat, and men in most "power" positions was perfectly normal. The Kinnison women were great, too, and a couple of others, but they were UNUSUAL. I knew, even that young, that guys were bigger and stronger that girls, and we could only have an advantange with guns or magic (or equivalent).
I had a twelve-year-old's crush on Kim Kinnison, and seriously admired the Velantians ...
So any fic with normal human women able to defeat normal human men, lacking better weaponry or special powers, is so unrealistic I can't handle it.

I think I caught Torchwood for the 2nd season.
The whole Captain Jack thing was absurd.
Even in the middle of dire circumstances during which they ALL. MIGHT. DIE., Cat jack would say something like "Welp, gotta get my gay on." and leave the crew for a round of buggery.
Then come back all refreshed and ready to fight. Sorta like Popeye with his spinach.
Who knew Spinach = Gay Sex?
It's a funny old world.
I'd just change the channels during the gayothons and man, did they seem to last forever. I'd turn back 5-10 minutes later and they were still going on.
A-a-a-a-anyway, I gave up about halfway thru the season as it was clear the producers were less interested in telling an interesting story and more in showing gay sex to the Deplorables.

Yeah, I do plenty of skewering of the political class. I used to work in politics so I know those people quite well.That's one of my themes: all these people who think they're so smart, so in control, the best and the brightest - end up getting crushed like bugs when they run up against a real ruthless operator. (Again, this was before anyone took Trump seriously.)
Of course, not all of them get crushed - a good number simply bow the neck and accept the yoke. Their precious principles are utterly forgotten when their miserable lives are on the line.

The Expanded Universe explains why Palpatine made his play for the Empire, sort-of. There was a whole Sith philosophy. If I am not wholly mistaken, this philosophy is based on hierarchy, and on that hierarchy's basis on the strongest (in the Force) being the rightful rulers.
It was Palpatine's thought that the Republic we see in The Phantom Menace was hypocritical and weak. If the Republic wasn't hypocritical and weak, the Sith - who, remember, typically number about two, in a good decade - would never have gotten anywhere.

My example is the New Improved Lost in Space.
Of all the people lost in space on a hostile alien planet there is one gun.
It was made by the Once hostile but now friendly alien robot.
The bad guy is a girl who pretends to be a Therapist, stole her spot onto the Starship from her sister and spaced the crewman who caught her while being observed by the Captain and questioned just as the ship broke apart due to the once hostile alien now friendly which everyone but the Robinson's wants dead.
The Man is not in charge and he lets the batteries go dead on the vehicle BUT his wife master of all trades is able to fix it as well as everything manly that needs to be done.
She was going to divorce the Husband for running off to fight an illegal American war against some desert people.
I watched three episodes then stopped.
I knew what was going to happen after that.
I don't go see any movies these days and rarely watch an entire movie once I do.
