The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

Among the biggest obstacles to educating children in many ghetto schools are disruptive students whose antics, threats and violence can make education virtually impossible. If only 10 percent of the students are this way, that sacrifices the education of the other 90 percent.

The idea that Eric Holder, or anybody else, can sit in Washington and determine how many disciplinary actions against individual students are warranted or unwarranted in schools across the length and breadth of this country would be laughable if it were not so tragic. Thomas Sowell

Quote II

Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day. You shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

Quote III

“What a slut time is. She screws everybody.” John Green

*****

Opioid crisis? What crisis?

A Peabody [Massachusetts] man found with more than half an ounce of heroin hidden in a secret compartment of his Volvo three years ago won’t have to serve time in prison after pleading guilty to charges of drug possession with intent to distribute.

That’s because, a Salem Superior Court judge reasoned on Tuesday, Manuel Soto-Vittini was just trying to support his family, and was not an addict himself.

“This was basically a money crime,” Judge Timothy Feeley concluded, rejecting a prosecutor’s request for one to three years in state prison.

*****

If you don't succeed at first, try, try, try, try, try, try again.

Samuel Goldstein is determined to become an attorney.

But there's one big stumbling block.

The 2013 graduate of Arizona Summit Law School has failed the bar exam six times: five times in his home state of California, which has one of the highest cut scores in the nation.

He flew to Illinois in February to take the exam because he heard it was easier to pass there. He needed a score of 266 out of 400 to pass. He fell short with 239 points, he said.

The years-long struggle has been draining for the 33-year-old.

"It's kind of like torturing yourself," said Goldstein, who has amassed $285,000 in student-loan debt.

Or, it sucks to suck.

To my knowledge Muldoon didn't write tonight's story of the Genius Award Winner.

Stephen Lawrence woke up like that on a day back in November 2015.

Couldn’t remember much of anything from a four-sheets-to-the-wind drinking session with a booze buddy the previous evening.

Sent a text to his pal saying, heck, didn’t know how he’d got home but hoping he hadn’t been “a super a--hole last night.”

He had.

The friend — likely no longer — responded rather tetchily that Lawrence had bitten off his ear, which he might now lose altogether. Gives a whole new, and literal, meaning to chewing someone’s ear off.

The severed auricle had been deposited into a zip-lock bag and reattached at the hospital.

Lawrence: “Oh, f--k me.”

Indeed.

10 If the Mueler Special Council investigation does not have a genesis in law; ie Rosenstein did not authorize it (and Meuler) to investigate a specific crime, then I believe the President would be well within his rights to not only deny Meuler an interview, but ignore any findings, and criminal referrals and flip off the justice department.

Let the Supremes take it up from there.

He's losing it, man. Just a fact of life. He has gotten lost going up to the store twice and he doesn't remember much of what he does. He worked at General Electric as a mechanic for forty years, yet he needs me to fix his riding mower.

I don't know how much longer he has before I have to condemn him to His Personal Hell in a facility. Had he not threatened my Mother twice, I would not even think such things.

He's not getting better, but he hasn't been violent for months. (Not that my Mom helps that... *AAAAGGGHHH!*) She wants to badger him and I'm just dealing with them.

If God deems that I have to deal with another eighteen years of this? ...well, it'll make-up for what I put them through.

Granny car. Find an old person, or old couple, who has given up driving, and buy their old, but well cared-for unstylish sedan. Even if it is 39 years old. And budget some money for must-do maintenance, like new tires, and maybe new brake hoses, etc. Three thousand dollars should find you a nice car, and leave enough of a nest egg for repairs.

1) Private party sale (not dealer)
2) Skew toward cars older people drive (Hondas, Oldsmobiles, etc.). Grown-ups tend to take care of their things.
3) Avoid hot cars. Hot cars are really fun, but they tend to be driven like they were hot cars...
4) Do your homework. Consumer Reports' reliability metrics are, in my experience, reliable (apologies for that - I couldn't resist)
5) If he's not mechanically experienced, have someone you trust check it out first. $100 can save you thousands by alerting you to a stinker.
6) There is a lot out there in the sub-$5k range but be careful. There is a big difference between "value" and "cheap" and it isn't always obvious (see point 5)
7) Be prepared for imperfection. Some things virtually any cheap used car - even a good-value one - will need:
- Tires
- Brakes
- Wipers
If you don't have complete service records (you probably won't), I usually exchange all the fluids as soon as I get a used car - especially if that car is old.

YMMV, of course, but I learned these lessons - sometimes the hard way - as a teen/early 20-something and helping my little cousin. I made her walk away from *several* cars before we landed on the right one. Which leads to:
9) Always be prepared to walk away from a bad deal or a car with red flags.

There is no such thing as a sure thing, but you can stack the deck in your favor.

A lot of people across the political spectrum don't want their children disciplined. They want other people's children disciplined, just not their own. And I'm talking about non-corporal punishments, such as suspension, detention, notes home to parents, missing recess, whatever.

I've known a lot of people who teach in public schools. I've listened to a lot of teacher complaints about students doing things that were outrageous, damaging to neighbor's property, sometimes dangerous, and when the parent is told about whatever the discipline is, they fight it, sometimes to the point of contacting a lawyer.

----------

First, those requirements are relative.

The truth is, buying a used car is always something of a roll of the dice, assuming that it isn't from one of the used car dealers that offers some warranty.

My best advice is to try to find someone who is very savvy about cars and get them to advise your son regarding any particular car. But, the above paragraph applies to anyone.

As far as price goes, there's no limit on the upside, but on the low side I suppose a reliable Japanese car with less than (?) 75k miles should be had for, damn, I don't know. $3000-$5000 ?

He insists on leaving her by herself - or,worse, dropping her off somewhere like a store and leaving her to become disoriented and tearful. He refuses to accept that she is now a full-time responsibility. We have arranged in-home care, and he runs them off or ignores them.

What a sad mess. We foresee a messy legal battle to take guardianship away from him, which will destroy all of us. That, or letting catastrophe strike.

If a customer has abandoned a car at a service shop, the shop owner can get legal ownership by filing a mechanic's lien or a warehouseman's lien on the car. And then sell it. I wouldn't advise this route for buying a car, unless one is looking for a specific model, and one turns up in that situation.
Again, granny car. Know any old folks at church, or at work? Or people who are faced with moving aged parents into care? There may be people with cars just waiting to be bought. Network, network, network.

Work...sucks. Maybe it will get better.

As far as the issues with the county hospital...I sent another letter to their attorney, stating that I wrote them four months ago with an offer of a monthly payment plan. It was small, but I'd be paying something, at least.

I heard nothing back from them until last week. They said I had never corresponded with them; that's a lie.

I can't afford an attorney, so when the court date arrives in June...well, who knows what will happen. If they want all the money at once, I don't have it. I'm afraid I'll end up with no car and practically nothing but the clothes on my back.

Going out to catch the rays for that Vitamin D was difficult. Our ancestors learnt to hunt and gather for sustenance that would provide Vitamin D without sunlight - eventually ending up with a gene to digest milk in adulthood. Also, light skin processed the sunlight more efficiently.

In sum, you were a jerk, and he lost patience with your trolling.

Well, abandoned cars are often abandoned for a reason. Maybe it's in the body shop for a crumpled fender, and the owner knew it also needed a tranny overhaul, and decided that the sum of the two jobs was more than the car was worth.
A car like that could be a good deal for a shade-tree mechanic, but for a newbies driver with mechanical skills, the words "money pit" come to mind.

When I heard this story I was reminded about the following Booker T Washington quote...

There is another class of coloured people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs and the hardships of the Negro race before the public.

Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs, partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays.

Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs....

That's what ALL predators do, I suspect. Dogs do the same thing. People who have pit bulls around little tykes who run around shrieking should be horsewhipped. They're just begging for trouble.

Hell, I even seen German shepherds' snap to attention when a tyke runs around shrieking. That signals "prey" to any predator.

290 Votermom, it depends on where you are and what you want.

I've been buying $1500 cars for a couple of years to drive them for a couple of years and save up enough for a decent used car. That might be a strategy for your kid if you are not in an area with DEQ requirements.

Buy towing insurance and decent tires and have a walk out kit and make sure they check all the fluids every time they gas up.

My goal was to put aside 10K, which I now have done, and will be moving to a nicer car. Which for what I want - a late model Ford Edge - will be between 4 and 6K
A nice boring Accord or a Corolla will run you about that price range.

Saving 10k is basically saving $835 a month for a year, or $420 a month for two years. It's good practice. This is the third time I've done it.

Maintenance records. They are great cars but that era of Ford transmissions was ... spotty. If they've serviced it on time, it is probably fine. If not, you could be looking for trouble (a new tranny will be about $2,200-$2,500. Ask me how I know). On the plus side, it is easy to assess if the trans has been serviced because the fluids break down nicely over time.

At least then, if you have to push your father to get your mother the help she needs, you'll have something other than your own opinion to back you up.

314 how exactly can a teen find a cheap reliable old car to buy and how much should they have saved up?

The wife found a 2008 Mazda 5 on Facebook Marketplace. It had a transmission problem, but it was only $800.

Since I have some ability at car repairs, we took a chance on it, thinking that worst case it would need a rebuilt tranny which would still make the total cost sunk into it below Blue Book.

After replacing two solenoids which didn't fix it and a transmission control module that seems to have done so, we've got about $1300 into it, which is still a bargain on an older car in this good of shape.

I don't mind being called a jerk. Sometimes I am one.

Still, I didn't posit that either race was superior, simply that the development of a separate race/skin color must be a process of evolutionary adaptation.

If I had formulated the same hypothesis in discussing insects, I believe he would have agreed. Why is it racist to discuss the same process in the human species?

In truth, I imagine to an evolutionist that humanity isn't really anything more significant than just the latest random step on the evolutionary ladder.

Thanks. We have everything we need in that department. Until something actually happens, though, we can't take guardianship without an ugly scene.

It is heart-breaking watching old people fight to hold on to an independence they cannot sustain. My parents have the means for in-home care--and we have arranged it. But ALLOWING it--that is where my dad gets bull-headed. And my mom is still with it enough to bark at the care-givers and intimidate my dad.

We are having my dad evaluated (neuropsych) this week. I am not quite sure how my little sis snuck that appointment in on my dad. (She is wily.) We will proceed from there.

I hope I get run over by a train. Or hit by a meteor. Not eaten by an apex predator-sounds too painful.

I think it's pretty straightforward ace. There was a time when conservatism was "standing athwart history and yelling 'stop'". That was Wm. F. Buckley, and that was the dawn of the conservative movement. He tried to remake the Republican Party a party of conservatism and partly succeeded, but only partly.

Conservatism nowadays is splintered -- I'm with you on the small government part but not the SoCon stuff, for example -- but it's still an insurgent. It's not the Republican Party. The Republican Party is still Establishment and Let's Not Rock the Boat.

The kind of Republicans who really don't have much use for the social cons. They are typically pro defense, and claim to be fiscal cons, but are really more go along to get along types. The view their role as a check on how fast the Dems socialize the country. Not that they will try to really stop them, just slow them down to a respectable pace.

393 Apropos of nothing, I passed the bar exam on my first try - it was difficult, but it wasn't hard like STEM topics are hard. Just logic and a lot of memorization.

I remember Hillary couldn't pass the DC bar exam, which I understand uses the multi-state multiple choice section. Myself, and 70% of my graduating class, passed that portion of the test (it's 1/3 of the total score the way Texas does it) by a big enough margin to have automatically qualified for the DC bar - I never got certified there because it's silly to pay close to $600 bucks a year for the "prestige" of a thing you'll never use.

Passing the bar is difficult, meaning it takes concentrated, well organized work over a significant period of time. But if you can do that, it's not actually hard, not compared to truly hard things I have done. Bluntly put, I can't count how many flaming idiots I've met who have passed the bar.

394 Warbler, Dave Ramsey says if you want an inexpensive reliable used car look for fugly. At the low end if a sporty nice looking car is cheap it needs a lot of work. And that might be OK if you can find a 2nd same model car to use for parts and have a buddy or family member with the tools to help you put the rear end from one onto the one with a better engine; but if you're paying a mechanic for all repairs it will be a money pit.

My neighbor is a shade tree mechanic, which is awesome for me getting my p/u serviced. I still would not want to pay his labor on something that needed a whole lot of work.

I 'think' what Ace is trying to say is something that most of have pointed out over the years: namely that conservatism 'conserves' for conservation's sake. It is an age old argument (one of the reasons GK Chesterton preferred to refer to himself as a 'Traditionalist' rather than a 'conservative.'

The idea that you are merely trying to keep things the way they are instead of pointing out that many of these ideas and institutions are time proven and tested is one that has been pointed out many times.

He is also conflating that with the institutional inertia in how the GOP ruling class has been resistant to the truly revolutionary ideas and implication of Trump's election. Trump is not merely trying to conserve the status quo (as one could argue that GW Bush did) but rather actually trying to roll back the leviathan state- something 'conservatives' have spoken about lovingly in the past, but was so much electoral pillow talk.

So many time-tested principles of America have been abandoned simply because they're old.

Weird. Just plain weird for a bride to do that at her wedding reception. She must have been doing some virtue signaling...maybe for the Clooney's benefit.

Many larger cities have emission controls and inspections/tax stamps, the older cars can't pass them. Here it is the Department of Environmental Quality, but it is in the Portland metro area. If you don't know what they are you are blessed.

A walkout kit is actually two kits, one to stay in comfort with the car until dawn when you can get towed out of the ditch/snowbank/side of the road, and the other for walking home.
I keep a packed bag for surprise overnight stays, a tarp and a blanket.

485 A lot of people across the political spectrum don't want their children disciplined.

Posted by: nerdygirl at May 21, 2018 10:35 PM (+lVUW)

In my case, I knew growing up that the teacher was God as far as my parents were concerned (even if I knew at heart the teacher was thoroughly incompetent). God help me if I got in trouble with the law: they would have filed complaints with the police if they did NOT have me summarily executed. If I were in court, I knew they would take the side of the prosecution and demand the worst possible punishments that the State could administer. And no, I am not exaggerating, either. But I turned out all right...

513 Nipah virus

"It was first discovered in 1998 when there was an outbreak in Malaysia. The virus can make the jump from animals to humans when humans consume contaminated food to which the bats have transferred the virus.

An outbreak in 2004 was caused after bats transferred the disease to date palm sap that humans ate, according to the WHO."

Easily transfers between family members, so you don't have to eat the food to get it.

It sounds like it breaks out in India every year though. So, not sure we need to worry. More worried more about the SJW virus.

Joe's thing about tragedies and statistics seems to bear out in real life.

I was trying to explain the horror of America's war history in flat numbers to a friend. She absolutely could not understand how that, in terms of real and relative numbers, the American Civil War was the bloodiest ever fought in human history, at its time. And then, it would be eclipsed by orders of magnitude twice in the following century.

She simply couldn't comprehend the scale of killing in any of that.

Yet, when I proudly told her that Israel eliminated 50 Iranian launch platforms with 28 losing their lives, she was shocked by the upfront brutality of war.

I thought it was merciful, and she thought it was brutal, and I think it's because a lot of chicks hate math.

Posted by: tbodie at May 22, 2018 12:38 AM (YxTUV)

No, we use a online clock in system that we have set up on tablets. Something weird is going on company wide however, and a lot of people across several states cannot clock in or out.

It is not a huge problem for me, because I keep records of when my guys get here and when everyone leaves, but other people are not quite so old school.

I mostly do it because certain, ahem, errors pop into existence every now and then and I like to have my guy's back. Saves me a lot of headache to make sure their times are right on the front end.

577 90 -- Slap -- My husband's mother and aunt lived with us the last five years of my mother-in-law 's life. She was okay to live with because in spite of a horrendous case of osteoporosis, she was in great shape. Took one pill a day and was sharp as a tack right up to the end -- a few weeks past her 99th birthday. Her sister, however, Himself',s aunt, was impossible. When they moved in, Mary still had a vague idea who Himself was, although I was some stranger who had just walked into the house. The stuff she did still gives me nightmares. When my mother-in-law passed, we had a choice -- one of us quit working to take care of her or pop her into the nursing home up the street. The nursing home won.

You have my sympathy, Slap. Dementia is harder on the survivors than on the victim. The victim is living in his/her little world totally unconnected to reality. It is the survivors trying to care for talking vegetables that used to be close family members who grieve. More than once, my mother-in-law sat on the couch and bawled her eyes out because it looked like Mary, but Mary herself had died years earlier.

Good luck, and see if you can find a caretakers group. Short of that, talk with someone who has already had to deal with the problem. There are definite stages, and each stage has its own issues. Every day, remind yourself -- this is not my father talking or yelling at me, it is the disease.

People's concepts of death and life are very... distant these days. I think they just have no experience to relate.

Consider:
In the aforementioned Spanish flu pandemic of 1917, 3-5% of the world population perished. If it happened today, 225 Million to 375 Million people would die.

That is a truly staggering total, and goes to Stalin's point about people having trouble grasping large numbers (which is funny considering he is responsible for one of the largest mass murders of the 20th century- a competitive category for Socialist dictators.)

When I was stationed there, the Tuesday practice was the absolute best day.

Took Little VIA out of class, and he would spend the day at work with me.
