It's Time for Conservatives to Abandon Twitter [Warden]

Four months ago, James O'Keefe caught multiple Twitter employees on undercover video discussing how algorithms are used to "shadowban" their conservative users.

What's a shadowban? It's basically stealth censorship that throttles or hides a user or his content from some or all of Twitters users. There are no warnings. Everything looks the same to the user, except he's largely tweeting into a void.

Twitter, of course, denied that the employees were speaking for the company or that Twitter uses shadowbans.

This week's announcement that Twitter will be using algorithms that analyze user behavior to downgrade or hide tweets from particular accounts appears to contradict this assertion.

From Buzzfeed:

Twitter will now use thousands of behavioral signals when filtering search, replies, and algorithmic recommendations. If it believes you are trying to game its system, or simply acting like a jerk, it will push your tweets lower down.

Ahhh. Acting like a jerk. Well, I'm sure that this subjective evaluation won't be used to punish any particular ideological group.

Among the signals Twitter will use: whether you tweet at large numbers of accounts you don't follow, how often you're blocked by people you interact with, whether you created many accounts from a single IP address, and whether your account is closely related to others that have violated its terms of service.

Translation: If a bunch of crybaby leftists block you or even the people with whom you associate, you're going to be silenced.

If you don't believe me, well it's already happening. Twitter users can hit this site to see if they've been shadowbanned. I have and so have most of the people that I know on Twitter.

I've suspected for months that Twitter has been monkeying around with my content just based on how my interactions and retweets have dropped from where they were in the past.

With this latest news, I've decided to close my Twitter account and abandon the platform entirely to migrate to Gab.ai, a site similar to Twitter that was founded by a libertarian who is a fierce free speech advocate.

Not only do I think this was the right move for me, I think it's the right move for all conservatives. With this latest change by Twitter, it's become clear that their far-left CEO, Jack Dorsey, is not going to allow voices from the right to be heard on Twitter. He's not even bothering to hide it any longer.

Conservatives who choose to stay on Twitter--to engage and "fight" the left in the marketplace of ideas will have their content throttled and their influence diminished even as Twitter benefits from their use of the site.

Worse, users on the right are putting their private information in the hands of a company entirely populated by unscrupulous, vengeful leftists who think nothing of doxxing people with whom they disagree.

I can't emphasize this enough, these people hate you and cannot be trusted. Ace just posted today about how someone at a website run by Harvard leftists doxxed a commenter simply for making a comment that he didn't like.

The same can easily happen to you. It doesn't matter if you're anonymous on Twitter; unless you've been extremely careful, they've still got your IP address as well as any DMs you've sent friends. Are you certain you never left any identifying information in any of those messages? You'd better be because they save them all and their employees have access to them.

So not only are they actively thwarting your attempts to counter the leftist social media hegemony, they can also potentially unmask anonymous users who are effective in ways that they don't like.

Or, who knows, maybe they give your private information to someone in government who can make life hard for you--someone like a Louis Lerner, perhaps.

No, there's no winning in the social media game when leftist censors control the platform. Conservatives have just two options--agitate for the Facebooks and Twitters of the world to be regulated like utilities or build and support their own platforms. Neither of these are mutually exclusive, but we only have direct control over the latter.

Fortunately, that platform exists for us with Gab.ai. With a user base of around 500,000, it's on the verge of becoming a real player, but it needs content from fun, smart and entertaining users to draw even more conservatives to the platform.

So if you're not there yet, give it a try. Bring a friend. Let's stop supporting our enemies. Let's stop putting money in their pockets by boosting their subscriber counts. Let's stop entrusting our private information to a bunch of sociopaths who wouldn't think twice about ruining your life or anyone else's for the simple crime of expressing a different point of view.

Conservatives have suffered too long from a lack of imagination and a lack of confidence. We don't NEED Twitter. It's an easy, low cost switch to Gab.ai. What have you got to lose? Some followers? Who cares? Your content is being memory holed anyway. Hardly anyone is seeing it.

I understand why conservatives want to stay. We were winning it all for awhile. Every time a big-mouthed lefty celeb posted some inanity meant to garner attaboys from the amen chorus, he got wrecked over and over in his mentions.

It was a bonfire of the vanities for the Establishment, both for the left and the #NeverTrump pretenders on the "right." It was an exciting, heady time when, for the first time in our lives, there was no layer of protection for these bloviating clowns and their cheap sophistry

But that's over. Twitter is desperate to protect the order of things. They can't afford to let you have your say and they aren't going to. Accept this and start supporting friendly alternatives. Remember, every hit you give Twitter is one that conservative sites like Ace of Spades or free speech friendly platforms like Gab.ai aren't getting.

It's time to change direction. Enough is enough. Let's stop acting like a bunch of battered spouses and exercise our options. Support our friends. Punish our enemies. It's time to build our own world.

Barring a big move like that, we'll see if grows anyway. gab.ai has been slowly growing over a couple of years. Any platform that doesn't play shadowbanning tricks and overtly oppress speech is worth looking into just on GPs.

This isn't a binary choice, though - any user can use both.

I use neither. I have zero social media presence. This is fine for now. When I have to get a different job, though, it could burn me. I know some folks who were in late-stage interviews and when they said they don't have a facebook/twitter/whatever, they were removed from consideration. And these are engineers. How messed up is *that*?

Facebook does the same thing. I've seen it with my own eyes. You can post on sites using the platform for their comment section, and your posts will show up on the site and in whatever your "my comments" (or whatever) section on your facebook account.

Except the posts are invisible to everyone else. You just think no one is talking to you.

These people should duplicate their postings on Gab, expanding the quality content available there, and enabling a transition away from the twatters. Trump should definitely do this - as noted by others, that alone would be a gigantic boost.

That's an interesting question. I would say no, not directly. But I would also say that doing things like trolling are actually useful because it imposes a social cost on the stupid virtue signalling that the left participates in.

Also, you can destroy someone's intellectual and coolness credibility by making them look stupid or silly via platforms like Twitter.

Also, you can expose people to new ideas and resources through memes, arguments and links.

So it does matter. It's a cultural war. But Twitter is a front we can win on because they control it.

I really think that most or a good deal of them being raised in a time of "reality stars" want to be like that and so followers on some social media site makes them think they are famous. First part is enforcing rules, or freezing society into a mold that is "more equitable", which doesn't work for the very reasons stated,

The final step is to try to control people's thinking, either by convincing everyone it is for the eventual millenium, or by convincing the people that it is for their own best interest, and the greater good (thank you Rousseau) and what they actually want even if they think they want something different, and then finally by holding everyone in line by threat and use of lethal force, kidnapping and terrorizing whole countries for the betterment.

And once you can do that, why not skim the riches for yourself and live like Insane Roman Emperors? Who will say you are wrong to do so?

After that attempted mass slaughter at the Family Research Center, I saw several of my liberal "friends" on Facebook saying, "Yeah, well, sure, I'm glad nobody actually got hurt or anything, but really, don't you think these people sort of invite this type of totally-not-terrorist-at-all violence with all their hateful rhetoric and stuff?"

Oh, so... people who think like I do sort of have mass shootings coming to them. Yeah, I was basically done with Facebook at that point.

The timing of this post is amazing. I had intended to sign up on Twitter tonight. Why? Basically I'm tired of not being active in the culture wars and am looking to engage with non-conservatives. I never bother with the comments here because I already agree with 95% of what you all are talking about, so what's the point. I mean.. no offense, but the right is almost as bad as the left when it comes to virtue signalling. The only difference is I probably won't get banned here for saying so..

But, it's a pretty damn good point about it being a bad idea to give these people your personal info. So I guess my question is - is gab.ai full of conservatives the way twitter is full of libs? Are there real disagreements to hash out?

270 Folks, be realistic. If Trump tried to move to Gab now it would crash. They are doing wonderful stuff but they are just approaching "Scalability Mountain" and are nowhere near ready to handle the traffic volume Trump would bring. But never fear, there are echo accounts setup that gate in the tweets of certain really important folks. Trump, Trump Jr., Tucker Carlson, Ann Coulter, etc. You can follow those shadow accounts and keep with the important action.

Just remember, other than outright illegal and doxing there are no holds barred. Muting users and words is on you. If your limit of "edgy content" is defined by what is allowed here, prepare to be shocked. No calling for a "cleanup." The only fig leaf is NSFW content must check that box when posting so you can safely browse at work without something awful accidentally appearing.

Well Gab has groups, Warden created one for the Moron Horde. So start by joining that group, follow some of your favorite Morons and watch the flow a bit. You will see new names in the conversations. Look over their other posts and follow a few of them if they seem of your ilk.

Then look through the list of groups for ones fitting your interests. Cooking to Cryptocurrency they have a bunch and folks are adding em quick since they are a recent new feature. But no reason to get in a hurry, tis just social media and it will all be there when ya get around to it.

It will all soon make more sense.

275 I've never done Twitter. I did have a Facebook account for a while, a passive one - never posted anything. Then my sister-in-law (who, I should add, is in most ways an excellent, admirable person) linked me into some of her left-wing threads. When I read what was being sent to me, I felt like a pail of garbage had been emptied over my head. Life is too short to have to deal with that sort of rancid stupidity; so I shut down the account. Can't say I've missed it.
BTW, gab.ai should be pushed not as the conservative Twitter, but the Twitter for everyone who values free speech.

It's great - the no censorship of ideas is wonderful. Mute is your friend at Gab. All comers including libs are welcome and there are some shitposters there so mute is really needed.

I've also switched from Google as my search engine to Duck Duck Go.

What next? Getting rid of Firefox / Chrome for my browser for one. I would like to stop visiting Youtube, but too much good stuff (Big Clive, Ashens) to give up if I do. Hmmm - I guess I could visit their websites to see their videos, instead.

Also - FaceBook and Android, but that will be _really_ difficult. FaceBook/Messenger is one of the last lines of communication I have with my boys in the US (besides email). And Android - I would need to replace my cell phone(s) and multiple smart TVs. Ugh.

Sheesh - and gmail. I would have to find a new email provider.

Maybe part of the plan is to compartmentalize us - easier to control that way.

On Gab, in a post, there is a check box to feed the post to Twitter at the same time. The Twitter account has to be set up in settings.

---I find that Gab is a different experience for each person because it is what you put into it. For example, yes, there are assholes there but they can be muted and blocked from following you. It's in your control. If you follow people who's opinion you don't want in your feed, it's up to you to remove them. If you want engaging content, then you engage with that content, join a group, follow and interact with others.Ask questions, people are helpful. Don't be afraid to speak your mind because it won't matter to anyone that can't mute you or block you from following them. Memes are awesome, and every time there's a mass influx of new users, the landscape changes.
