"So all of the progressive pols and media fatheads are watching this C-SPAN video clip of Donald Trump and running around with their hair on fire and getting explosive diarrhea because he called immigrants 'animals'. Of course, he did no such thing. He was answering a question that specifically mentioned MS-13 gang members (starting at about 24:30) and that's who he was referring to as animals. Trump's meaning is obvious from the context. What C-SPAN did was borderline criminal, in my opinion. And when this gets pointed out in the comments, the Trump haters can only say 'Yeah, but Trump is a racisty racist who says racist things.' And then you get drooling idiots like John Harwood who feel the need to say "MS-13 gang members are humans too, you know." Of course, he left out context *again*: MS-13 are sadistic thugs who rape, murder, amputate limbs, rip the hearts out of live victims, mutilate with machetes, etc. These are the criminals Harwood feels he needs to defend. This is late-stage TDS for which there is no known cure."

Because of the lack of cultural standards anymore, and the craziness that has infected our educational system from top to bottom, we are going to have shootings like this every few months, from now on. Expect it. Don't need any other reason than that for them to happen, and the only way we can minimize the casualties is to have armed and well trained professionals on hand at all times, to stop these things when they start. It's just a fact of our lives now, and it isn't going to go away, not in our lifetimes at least.
So stop being surprised when they happen, and stop inventing wild conspiracy stories to "explain" why they happen. They are going to happen pretty regularly, no explanation needed.

I haven't done any in almost 10 years. But I did train for them and chugging a gallon of water to get used to the "stretch" was part of it.
Chugging a gallon of anything quickly is not a light task for someone untrained. Even water. Try it yourself.
Downing 25 gallons is beyond impossible. Thick slow stomach emptying Oil makes it extra beyond impossible.

Agree. But it's not about what SHE believes. She's speaking normatively, prescriptively. She wants to reforms President Trump based on urging some recognition of divine spark--which he may or may not recognize.
Thus, within this theory, you have to show that you CAN'T be mandated to recognize that divine spark where you do not happen to. She can show that she happens to think the divine spark fairies' pixie dust can only reach babies outside the womb, but her incidental beliefs don't matter. If we can levy moral mandates on others based on "divine spark", then we have to justify that our actions do not violate said "divine spark".
Perhaps we could have an interview with the divine spark fairies....

I have not done the statistical analysis yet but I do not believe American kids (who always go a little nuts around the end of the school year) have suddenly decided to start killing others without some kind of prompt. There are too many incidents for this to be random.

I'm going the other way on that ... I don't think all American kids were EVER good. They sure as Hell weren't while I was growing up in the 80s.
And again ... I know my sample-set is skewed growing up White Trash ... but based upon what I saw out of my older cousins ... teens in the 70s were savage little bastards too. And based upon what I know my Old Man and his crowd were doing .. teens in the 60 were feral fucks as well.
So I dunno' - I can't tell you why more shootings are happening now. But I'm positive it's not because teens were little angels that just knew better in the past.
The only thing I can tell is that they used to fight a Hell of a lot more - but things escalated into gunplay less. Although gunplay certainly happened.

I suspect to find the kid was bullied. Just another one who was never allowed to deal with the issue himself. There is a lot of self-esteem in fighting (win or lose) against a bully, instead the bullied are told not to rely on themselves but find an adult. It only makes the torment worse, and the eventual violent response far more dangerous.

What our high school education system needs are in-house sex workers. There is just too much tension and testosterone poisoning in high school.
Professional Sex Workers having facilities in High School would go a long way to defusing these interpersonal crises and defuse a lot of that adolescent tension.
These Professionals could also supplement Sex Education during the times when their primary function is not being utilized.
What we need are some grant applications to further explore this underserved need in our high schools.

School - Public or Private - can be a real shit-hole for some people. A misery every damn day. For a variety of reasons.
And some people just don't belong in school for twelve years. It's a waste of time for them. Socially, Intellectually, Emotionally.
This is another of those "gaps" I notice - between people here and people I work with. Just about everyone I work with ABSOLUTELY HATED HIGH SCHOOL. And these aren't "pussies", or "nerds" - but still, hated it. Hated the social aspects. Hated the rigidity. Hated what they knew, even then, was just a waste of time going through the motions before they got on with their lives.
The high-school experience BREEDS anxiety, in my opinion, for most people.

The "out of the box" thinking that's needed is controlled access on all high schools - no more "open campus" setups; and at least one (preferably two) trained and armed professionals on hand at all times, and NOT donut munchers like the Coward from Broward.
I would say arm teachers, but I know too many teachers who are idiots.

I went to high school in Houston in a pretty wealthy neighborhood. A classmate of mine built a pipe bomb and set it off in a classroom, fortunately before the start of the school day. He wasn't trying to hurt anyone (and he didn't). He just didn't like that class. I do believe he spent the rest of the school year in the "special" school for juvenile delinquents.

Although I'm not sure this is what the other poster was getting at, Nick Taleb in his work "The Black Swan" pointed out that mathematically, the random IS commonplace, especially when it comes to major events. Almost all of the major events in our lives, as well as all major historical events, are "random" in the sense that they are things that do not happen to us in a regular and predictable fashion. Our lives are driven by seemingly "random" events, but it's a human thing to try and avoid that conclusion since recognizing it tends to make us feel insecure.

1) school shootings are not commonplace. They are exceedingly rare and actually less frequent than in thr past.
2) random is not an antonym for "common". Walking through rain, you are hit by random drops, but it happens quite frequently.
I bet we will find this was another known troubled kid, and that little to nothing was done to either get him real help or get him away from the general population, likely for political reasons.

It was never bunked.
Shootings are carried out by people with emotional problems. People with emotional problems generally tend to try to get help or have been forced to get help. Anti-depressants and other drugs have helped millions of people, so they're likely tried with these emotionally disturbed people. Either the drugs don't work, or the person stops taking them.
There are drugs that are known to increase thoughts of suicide. They're not prescribed to kids. By law, their labels and literature are labeled with a big, bold, impossible to miss warning about these side effects. If a shooter is found to be on one of these drugs, that's a chain of gross negligence from the physician through the pharmacist to the kid's parents.
We stopped locking up the dangerously insane decades ago -- why are we surprised to find they're out there hurting people? Not everyone in the insane asylums was an inconvenient Kennedy -- most of them WERE dangers to themselves and others.

The Sandyhook kid had severe, debilitating mental issues, had been bounced around between school, mental institution, homeschooling (IIRC)because no one wanted to take him on. His mom was completely isolated and (wounds like) clinically depressed because of his tyrannical behavior at home and no assistance. Very sad, extreme case.
Sounds like the Parkland shooter had likewise been in a long-term battle with mental issues and officials not wanting to deal with him (police and school admin not acting on threats to other students, etc.).
Maybe one of the similarities of many of these cases is failure to successful stop the downward trajectory/escalation to violence. People who should be assisting the family pass the buck because it's too messy, to hard; and they don't want to be associated with a failure when/if it happens (i.e. shooting, suicide, whatever).
Didn't at least some of these situation used to result in the person being institutionalized to protect them and others from harm?

Understand that in Heller 4 out of 5 justices interpreted the 2nd A to mean that the GOVERNMENT (or any group it licenses) has a right to bear arms and the individual has no such right.
This ain't a matter of nuances. It's an 180 degree opposite of what the amendment says. But no matter.

Have you ever taken a SSRI? I tried a couple for nerve pain. Did not like the way it made me feel. It was very unpleasant-to put it nicely.

A counselor I know has complained that ADHD is rarely a solitary symptom, it generally is linked with depression, anxiety and other issues, and just giving a kid with anxiety or depression or other problems a powerful stimulant will cause problems
