A Perfect Evening Spoiled by the Self Sabotage of Victimhood [Warden]

I posted this on Twitter a week back and a lot of people responded positively to it. In hindsight, it's a mistake to waste content on a left wing platform that does everything it can to silence people like me. In response, I've quit Twitter over their censorship of conservatives and you can now find me on gab.ai under the handle @warden_AoS

********************************

A couple of weeks ago, my wife and I ditched the kids with grandma and went to our favorite steak house. It has a patio with a bar in the back. It was a nice evening, so we sat down by the fire pit and had a few drinks before our meal.

About 15 minutes in, a middle-aged woman sits down near us and jokes that she and her son had just stumbled into a make-out session at the well concealed fire pit next to us. Her kid is six years old, same as our youngest. We have a good laugh about it, then start making small talk.

The woman is a talker. Maybe she's a little loose from the alcohol. We're enjoying ourselves, though. It's nice to be able to just sit and talk to other adults even if it's mostly about your kids.

A few minutes later her husband joins us. He's seems content to sit in silence.
I ask the woman what she does for a living after she references her work. She's a supply chain manager for a big local company. Cool. I have no idea what that involves, but I'm a curious person and like asking questions.

The conversation is easy and light. We're all enjoying ourselves, laughing, drinking and taking in the first warm day of spring. Then the woman starts talking about the company gold outing she just attended.

She doesn't even like golf, she informs us, and had to rent clubs. Then her mood turns resentful as she observes that she was the only woman on a golf course full of men.

Her husband speaks for the first time. "I guess that was your #MeToo moment," he says.

I smile. I think he's joking. Of course he's joking.

He's not joking.

The woman rolls her eye and says, without sarcasm, "One of MANY."

We've gone from light hearted banter to a woman comparing being the only guuuuuurl on the golf course to being raped by an obese, toad-faced movie mogul.
Quite a turn.

She then details how, following male dominated company golf event, her company attempted to recruit women for the following year's event. "How condescending!" she hisses as she rolls her eyes.

God shows mercy as our table is called. We excuse ourselves.

Later I look at my wife and remark, ""You can't win with these people. She doesn't even like golf, but is angry that she's the only woman playing. Then, when her company tries to remedy the "problem," such as it is, she's mad about that as well."

My wife says, "I keep saying this to you--the problem is that they are without God. And they're so busy whining and bitching about what they don't have or what they're not getting or what is or isn't fair that they can't even see that they have been given MORE than enough."

We're all guilty of this sometimes, but for the left it is their defining character.

"Worse, my wife says," none of that sounded like her own words. It's as if that's what she thinks she's supposed to say and how she's supposed to feel about things."

If this woman could have just stepped back and outside of herself for a single moment, what would she have seen?

She would have seen herself in an expensive restaurant, sitting in a chair next to a comforting fire, holding a $10 cocktail having a pleasant, relaxing evening with her husband and some friendly strangers while her healthy boy runs around merrily in the woods behind her.

She's educated, attractive for her age, has a good job that treats her to organized special events and lives in a nice area with great schools. And here she is in the midst of all this abundance spitting bile over the male/female ratio in a company bought and paid for game of golf that she admittedly doesn't even enjoy

What must God think of us--we who live such easy, comfortable lives here in America--when we do this?

It's quite literally insane to willfully spoil your own joy in what is an otherwise perfect evening over some petty grievance. Counting your blessings isn't just some quaint saying. It is how you forge a connection with God on a daily basis.

Gratitude is the cornerstone of joyfulness. It works miracles in your life. It opens your heart to God's kingdom and seals it off from spite, resentment and rage.

And look, as a sinner, I get it. I've been this woman. I struggle with resentment. I struggle with letting go, particularly when I'm convinced I've been wronged.

It all starts with slowing down your knee-jerk emotional reactions and examining yourself. Everyone wants to say, "I am a victim. I have been wronged."

No one wants to say, "I am blessed. God has given me more than I deserve."

What is so hard about this? Why won't we say it? Why won't we acknowledge what has been so graciously granted to us? Are we afraid we'll lose face? Are we afraid we'll lose moral superiority?

Or perhaps it's because we're afraid that this acknowledgement will then require something of us--something greater than we're giving at the moment.

6 We seem to have forgotten something. The Taliban know this thing. ISIS knows this thing. But they are freaking lunatics! 16 I spent nearly ten years working for one of the most successful businesswomen in my little city. She was and is, a frequent panel member and speaker at local events for business, women in business and the usual mish-mash of stuff. Not long ago the local university asked her to participate on a panel about women in technology. There were other panels as well...venture start-ups, being a CEO, and leadership, but once again they wanted her for the woman thing. She refused. She had had enough of it.
I don't blame her.

Good post and good to see you.
You used the word "easy" twice in your post but never where it would be most appropriate. Victimhood is easy. It alleviates responsibility for decisions, theoretically engenders pity in others, keeps one's nose in the air, allows someone who is bored to be busy, and most of all it allows egotistical people to ruminate on their favorite subject - themselves.
It is *easy*. In the animal kingdom, survival is king, but among humankind envy may be the true lowest common denominator.

Leftists do have a distorted, negative version of counting blessings.

It's called obsessing over "privilege".

But they don't seem to be grateful to anything, true. Maybe they feel as if they ought to feel grateful, and they seek to destroy "privilege" so that people will be freed of the need to feel grateful.

54 Prayer for Good Humor
by St. Thomas More

Grant me, O Lord, good digestion, and also something to digest.
Grant me a healthy body, and the necessary good humor to maintain it.
Grant me a simple soul that knows to treasure all that is good
and that doesn't frighten easily at the sight of evil,
but rather finds the means to put things back in their place.
Give me a soul that knows not boredom, grumblings, sighs and laments,
nor excess of stress, because of that obstructing thing called "I."
Grant me, O Lord, a sense of good humor.
Allow me the grace to be able to take a joke to discover in life a bit of joy,
and to be able to share it with others.

I'll try explaining it to you and avoid saying God or Jesus so you don't start hyperventilating. He's sharing this as a reminder to be grateful for the things you do have, and don't spend time being so negative about everything. He's sharing it not only because of the woman, but because by his focusing on her he was being guilty himself of doing the same thing and what his wife said reminded him that he too should probably be focused more on the good rather than the negativity the woman is bringing.

Oh how horrible a sentiment to relay here on the blog. The horror!

86 For Mother's Day, we spent the day at the emergency vet. Our Newfoundland was screaming every time he moved. We had to carry him to the car, and then into the clinic. The vet there told us we would have to do a 2000 MRI, to see if he had a tumor or a ruptured disc. The surgery to fix the disc would be 5-7000.00. If it was a tumor, there was no hope. He said to just put him down. We asked for pain maintenance, and would see our vet in the morning. This guy acted like we were trying to prolong our dog's pain.
Sunday and Sunday night were some of the longest 24 hours I have ever spent. He howled at the slightest movement. But the worst part was my daughter. You see, this dog saved her life. When she was in the midst of failing kidneys, and no doctor believing anything was wrong, she wanted to just die, rather than endure the pain. We got her the dog to see if he would boost her morale. She hated him. But he would not accept that. He loved her anyway. As he grew older, he became more and more protective of her, and when she was sickest, he wouldn't leave her side.

My husband and I prayed without ceasing that God would spare this dog. Because it was breaking our baby's heart to see him in pain.
Monday, our vet said- leave him here. We will observe him, and tell you the best action to take.

This morning, we brought him home. No MRI. No surgery. Just a meager bill, and some pain meds for a neck sprain.

I thank God he listened to a prayer about a dog. Because He loves us, and He showed our daughter that she matters to Him. As do all His creatures.

I will never be rich. I will never have power. But I walk this earth knowing that my Creator cares about me enough to heal a dog. I could not be more blessed. What amazing privilege that is.

87 When you're young and "stupid", one often gets envious of what others have or do that you can't for whatever reason, whether it's lack of money or the resolve to do something besides sit on the couch and bitch.

I learned a long time ago to quit bitching and try to emulate successful people. It's one of the first things I tell young people when I catch them bitching and complaining about how life's unfair because someone who's a peer is more successful than they are.

And as far as it goes, none of us can ever give as much as has been given us.

90 He's sharing this as a reminder to be grateful for the things you do have, and don't spend time being so negative about everything. He's sharing it not only because of the woman, but because by his focusing on her he was being guilty himself of doing the same thing and what his wife said reminded him that he too should probably be focused more on the good rather than the negativity the woman is bringing.

Well, see, that's not what I got out of this. I don't see a lot of "I am guilty of the same" in the text of the post. I see it in the fact of the post.

A minor coblogger had dinner conversation that displeased him and chose to extrapolate it to the entire cause of leftist resentment.

The lack of self-awareness about how blessed he is to have been in the position to have the conversation is exactly my point.

103 Open Blogger: Don't feel alone. I am so sick and tired of listening to some of the luckiest people in the world whine and complain because somebody has a newer car than they do. Or because someone else has a hot tub and they don't. I am particularly sick and tired of the constant race baiting and the rest of the Leftist twaddle.

You want the newer car? Work a second job. You want the hot tub? Give up your daily cappuccino. Americans are so bigoted and hateful? Go back to the paradise you left to sneak into America illegally.

We live better today than any previous people. Kings and queens could only dream of what too many Americans stick up their noses at.

I made spaghetti for Himself and I for supper tonight in our Instant Pot. I used an entire pound of ground beef. That's more meat than many non-Americans see in months. I didn't spend half the day gathering fire wood or making the pasta. And I didn't stand there waiting for a pot of water to boil, then risk burning myself by carrying a pot of boiling hot water from the stove to the sink. I think it took me five minutes to brown the meat and chopped onions, pour a jar of spaghetti sauce, a jar of water and half a pound of premade spaghetti into the IP, put the lid on, then push a couple of buttons. After supper, I had to hand wash the dishes because we don't have a dish washer. But I used dish soap I didn't spend hours making myself and I used clean water that I didn't have to carry from the village well and heat.

That, my friends, is luxury of the sort no one in all of history ever enjoyed.

I don't worry where my next meal is coming from -- unless I forget to thaw something out. We have enough food in our house to last us several weeks, and we buy more each week because it's on sale. We own a house that has endured 118 winters and summers. And if I don't like the temperature, I just fiddle with the little doohickey on the wall.

I could go on and on, but I won't because it would bore you to death and you would stop reading this if you haven't already.

Yes, Open Blogger, you wasted your post on Twatter. I'm glad you have it to us.

I disagree.

A cob had a dinner conversation which brought on an observation that many people, not just libs, are obsessively unhappy. This is something that has been mentioned MANY times on this here blog.

Warden is trying to tie this into a common problem that everyone has- a need to look outside ourselves for the author of our misfortunes. (He even cops to it himself.) He then gives his own recommendation about how to try to deal with the problem.

While this may not be your cup of tea, I do not see it as a waste. The ONT should be along any minute, maybe something there will strike your fancy.

Or perhaps it's because we're afraid that this acknowledgement will then require something of us--something greater than we're giving at the moment.

244 Absolutely, Red Riding Hood! The way they pick and choose which users can freely express themselves makes FaceBook and Twitter less "open forums" and more "publishers".

As "publishers", they do indeed open themselves up to liability for things that they choose to "publish".

245 The only thing I wish I had was a job I truly enjoyed. Or at least didn't hate. I don't blame anyone for that though. I put paying bills first before following a dream. After a while you're stuck in that skill set."

I occasionally remind myself that if I actually enjoyed doing that kind of thing, I wouldn't call it "work".

It's probably the hormone treatments making xhim a lot more emotional than before. Don't worry, Jesus loves you even if you're trans. And so does Caitlyn Jenner.

251 Warden, I appreciated the post. If I were an atheist or an agnostic *without* a chip on my shoulder, I might disagree on the without-God explanation. (Personally, as a believer, I think this is sort of a third variable, not direct cause-and-effect.)

But I agree strongly with the main point: I know too many people who go around unhappier than they have to be, because they focus so relentlessly on the negatives in their incredibly lucky lives. I think they could be so much happier, and I'm sad for them that they're not. Seems like a choice, one I don't get.

252 Don't know about any of you, but having had emergency abdominal surgery back in 2014 cured me forever of the whole lack of gratitude thing. I was out shopping, took a drink of a Gatorade and thought I was going to faint from pain. I managed to call 911 and got to the emergency room where I got a temporary colostomy and lost 6" of my (perforated) colon. I only found out a week later that I had sepsis and it could have gone either way for me. Two weeks prior to all this, I had been 60 miles of mostly cross-country hiking away from my car with a friend. Out in the middle of nowhere Sequoia Natl Park, Sierra Nevada. It happens there and I'm dead.

Honestly, not a day goes by where I don't see my scar from the colostomy in the mirror after showering. I think about how incredibly fortunate I was to live through the experience and have all the time that I could easily have missed. If you don't have God and don't feel gratitude for the gift of life, your life is just a crap hand waiting for the croupier to take the dice away from you.

And that's fine and worth talking about.

My wife said what she said and I found it interesting. Apparently a couple of people who read this blog can't disagree or shrug it off and instead choose to throw temper tantrums and misrepresent what I wrote in plain English. ;-)

>My wife says, "I keep saying this to you--the problem is that they are without God."

Your wife is correct. I group of men I associate with, real pillar of society types with money and status, had a conversation about marriageable women and all agreed that a woman who does not fear or know God is a woman who will destroy you (if you let her) and is best to be completely ignored. The spinster bubble is growing in the west, but few understand why and the consequences that follow.

261 The rise of the lazy people.
Public bitching gives them attention and rewards without them making a real effort or needing any skill, talent... knowledge... or maturity.
They are petty and vindictive to those who succeed through hard work because productive people invalidate them.
Their hero is Hillary.
Guys do it too, but women are taking the lead right now.
The media encourages this behavior because it has been infiltrated with lazy people itself.

"What must God think of us--we who live such easy, comfortable lives here in America--when we do this?"

Oh, probably something along the lines of "and this too shall pass".

"Also, G-d has not given me what I truly deserve."

As Paul wrote in one of his missives, (paraphrasing) we're all sinners and I am the worst.

264 So, knowing this God of yours is going to making things all better...hummm One time, I was sitting in a similar situation/environment and when the complaining started I, a woman, got up and we walked away. But noooo, you and your wife just sat there. I'm sure your head was spinning with retort and couldn't wait to put it all out there for the men to spew their venom at.

God, huh. Hummm. As the male, I'm almost sure you are, you actually have no clue as to what the woman was really saying, but, that is natural for many men such as yourself. Ya'll use a woman's dislike, complaining, etc. against male choices that, by all means, we women should be happy, giddy and/or downright freakin excited about, as an outlet to admonish us to the level, corner, basement of your minds where you all feel safe in your all-knowing about women, their bodies, their pysche and their issues with dominance of male children.

Recently, I was going to stop coming to this site anymore. At one time, I did like but not all of the threads when the election process was going on because I am very anti-DACA and very anti-Clinton(both) but lately it seems like a very chauvinistic, foul smelling, female bashing party. Very boring, not to mention, annoying. I feel like I'm listening to my male boss, who, at times, I have come to realize I have to "dumb down" in order to have an intelligent conversation with.
Maybe I'll stick around to see just how low most of you go.

265 "It is impossible to be grateful and unhappy" Heard this listening to a Mike Rowe podcast and it really rings true for me regarding how many of the people who are unhappy are so because they are ungrateful.

266 "I keep saying this to you--the problem is that they are without God."

No. They are assholes. There are assholes with God and there are assholes without God.

We aren't religious and we would never dream about turning a simple conversation into some stupid, left-wing political rant.

Stop making it about God. It's about asshole people.

267 Late to this party (I'm sick in bed) but wanted to say I enjoyed this piece.

I've always been just sort of naturally a grateful person. I hadn't thought of gratitude helping make me closer to God. But I think you're right; it does. So that's a happy thing.
