Legally armed citizens do make a difference.

Data from the FBI's Active Shooter Incidents in the United States in 2016 and 2017 report; legal civilian gun carriers tried to intervene in 6 out of 50 incidents, and apparently succeeded in 3 or 4 of them.

We protect banks, courts, judges, art galleries, some hospitals, even post offices.

Why not schools?

Finally made it out to the range today to play with the NM M14 the RMBS dad had built years ago. Shoots beautifully, and reminded me that the biggest problem is the dope behind the rifle, rather than the dope on it.

12 You stop school shootings by making it legal for legal carriers to once again legally carry in buildings that suddenly become illegal just because someone decided it should be illegal.

Teachers don't even HAVE to carry, either. It just has to be legal for law abiding citizens to carry.

It's my experience that the weight of the gun negates felt recoil in the .45. They really are a joy to shoot in anything above teensy little attempts at carry pistols.

28 Good Cops in Schools.

I was thinking the same thing after my crack about why these shootings don't happen in Chicago schools. I don't know the particulars, but I suspect it is because the schools in Chicago, NYC, and Los Angles became so violent that on-duty police officers were required to be in the schools. Just as a beat cop knows the local troublemakers, the school officer soon learns who the potentially violent students are.

This also points out the absolute failure of Obama's "Promise" program that tolerated aggressively belligerent behavior from minority students when just the opposite should be happening; cause trouble in school, get kicked out of school

Los Angles schools used to have regular gang riots, but I'v not heard news of any lately. What changed?

As a subset of that I'd say teach old fashioned values. Jesus told a parable about building your house not on sand but on rock. Teaching kids that just because you have a dick doesn't mean that you are necessarily a boy is building your house on sand.

Yes. Schools need to be restricted back to only teaching the necessary subjects - real subjects. Schools are no place for sex-ed or any of that other stuff. There is biology class - good enough - but all of the moral stuff is the parents' responsibility and the school should not be anywhere near it. This crap with schools giving out free birth control and secretly helping underage kids to get abortions ... people should go to jail for that stuff. But, we're fighting the courts on this stuff, too.

The former secretary of education under President Obama, Arne Duncan, is proposing that parents keep their kids home from school until gun laws are changed.

Duncan tweeted this shockingly stupid proposal on Friday in response to a tweet from one of his former employees:

Washington Post:

Duncan said in an interview Saturday that the idea was intended to be provocative but that an aggressive approach like a school boycott is needed if gun laws are ever going to change. He has school-age children and said if this idea were to gain traction, his family would participate.

Lead the way! I'll be right behind you! I promise.

I had a discussion about arming teachers just the other day. Friend of mine started asking about teachers leaving the classroom looking for the shooter, etc.

I shut that idea down on the spot and told my buddy the responsibility of the instructor is that classroom only. The instructor keeps everyone behind a closed door and until given an all clear, someone coming through the door is risking getting shot.

64 You'll fine a .45 is harder to keep on target than a 9mm. That's one reason why many organizations including the Arny are moving to that round. But the 1911 is still a great platform and the right firearm will handle recoil more tha adequately.

65 On a previous Gun Thread I mentioned that I won a raffle drawing for a Ruger American 7mm Magnum rifle. Yesterday we went to pick it up. On the way home we hit a deer. Smashed in the whole front of the Jeep. Purchased annual fifty dollar tickets for twenty years before winning this rifle. Spent fifty dollars in gas to drive up and back. 66 38 Ok, question 2:
Is it possible to have two sweet spots in a loading?
One right near the lands and one much farther off?
It was gusty at the range today, so my data is suspect.
Posted by: RI Red at May 20, 2018 07:38 PM (naPOT)
-----------
You are making great strides, grasshopper!
Yes. You will usually find high and low accuracy nodes based on powder charge, and a couple of sweet spots for bullet jump. For example, in my 6.5-.284, I load at .013" jump but there is another stable area up around .021" where things tighten up again. It's useful to save all this range data and plot it at home. You can then use the test data to repeat combinations which you think may be suspect due to range conditions.

any one have experience with either one? ima test drive them at a local gub store AND at a range before buying. might get two, which is the yearly limit, so we each have a house gun in 45 that we won't GAS if LAPD seizes it for evidence, if we ever actually have to use it in self-defense... 74 Considering buying a 1911 .45. Have a 9 mm and a .380. They have minimal recoil. I know the 45 slugs are larger and heavier, but have a slower velocity. Is there any appreciable recoil?

Posted by: Anonymous White Male at May 20, 2018 07:25 PM (9BLnV)

Ammunition selection is a big deal.

Choose a low-pressure 165 or 185 grain load, and the recoil will be much less.

Choose a high-pressure +P 230 grain load and the recoil will be much more.

Also, normally a lighter (compact, aluminum) gun will have more recoil with the same load, with the exception that polymer frames spread the recoil impulse out and thus have less perceived recoil.

Many people describe the full-size polymer Glock 21 as having the recoil of a .22 LR.

As always, recoil sensitivity is also very individual. The only way to know is to try.

People like to reduce issues to one factor, but caliber is definitely not enough information to answer the question.

Yes. I generally have a good idea where I'm going to end up with a load before I start to break in a new barrel and I do all the initial testing at 100 yards. Once I'm satisfied I check at 600yards, and shoot a new barrel/load in at least one club level 1000yd match before I decide its good to go.

Young men need action, danger and a challenge. Create a Rifle/Pistol Club in every government school to teach firearm fundamentals, safety and as a prep to joining the Military with an eye on Combat Arms, i.e. Infantry/Armor/Artillery and not Basketball Handout NCO or LGBTQRSTUV JAG Officer. Teach them to shoot, clean and respect firearms. Run them through a few live fire exercises and obstacle courses. They should be so tired and worn out at the end of the day all they want to do is sleep and not shooting up their classmates.

But who am I kidding.

It's been six weeks since my surgery and the Doc won't even think about letting me start physical therapy until June because of the extent of repairs he had to do in my shoulder. 29 screws and five big holes in my shoulder.

Took the last of my long guns and my 870 to the gun range to put on consignment last week as I will never be able to shoot anything high power again due to the damage to my shoulder.

I am keeping the Ruger.223 and the Colt 9mm along with the Uzi and the M1 Carbine though. I will be able to handle the recoil from them I think.

106 For every complex problem there are a number of solutions tat are simple, obvious, and wrong.

We could probably reduce domestic lethal apolitical violence by 80% by concentrating our efforts on the largest sources, but we're only vaguely aware of what they are and our efforts are spent in every direction at once, mostly on political infighting.

We really need an apolitical moonshot-level program on personal violence, but no one will pay for it and it won't get anyone elected, re-elected, or rich, and if academics signed up for it and it *wasn't* political then they'd probably lose their jobs for nothing.

We have an astounding amount of evidence from al over the world that gun ownership restrictions don't improve violence, but that's where all the effort is spent.

It says something depressing about humans that the majority of their political efforts are spent on proven failures (pro or con), like gun control, heavy wealth redistribution, price and wage controls, etc.

The one deer I didn't see was because I was so tired I had tunnel vision, focused on staying between the white lines on the freeway. The deer crossed an open field, jumped the fence, crossed the other lanes of traffic, and crossed the median, and jumped into the left lane in front of me before I saw it. It fell down twice on the pavement. (Hooves don't work well on concrete). The last thing I saw was the frightened look on the animal's face as it went under my steer tire. Loaded to the maximum legal weight limit, that poor animal just exploded when the truck went over it. Poor thing. 112 About 15 years ago, a comparative study of crime in the US and UK was released in the UK.

In summary, it showed that the UK had a much bigger crime problem than the US.

Among others, it showed that residents (or subjects) in the UK were much more likely to be victims of violent assault, mugging, robbery, burglary, car theft, rape (before Rotherham, etc. became known) and down the line.

UK murder rates were lower then in the US (about 10% per capita) and death by gunshot 80% lower. Do the math on that.

The study was simply rejected by the Blair government, which had commissioned it. It was ridiculed in the UK press, initially. But it did not match the experiences of Her Majesty's subjects.

The UK press later got interested, and politicians finally admitted that the UK is more dangerous than than all but a small part of the US.

Further comparisons indicate that about 96% of violent crime in America takes place in about 9% of populated areas (in New York City, about 90%/3%).

Putting properly trained psychologists with experience specific to violent youth would require something like 100,000 of them.

I ain't sayin' it's impossible, but either one (or both) would make the moon shot look easy. It would make a big difference, but it would be very, very hard and, let's face it, almost all of that effort would be wasted.

This is a huge problem with mass attacks of *any* kind. Most school shooters compare themselves to others before going on their rampages, and people forget when on this topic that terror attacks are often prompted as much by other terror attacks as they are any underlying issue. Jihadis have whole semi-underground communication networks showing off terror attacks as encouragement.

I've had close encounters with two deer, one of which I brushed with a mirror and one I hit dead on. The first one shook its head and walked away, the other one died on impact and was spirited off by somebody living by the road. Lessons learned: deer are intensely stupid. By contrast the AR 15 was dead on at 200 and 300 yards. That was as far a safe shooting berm as we had.
It won't convince me to buy one but it'll do nicely in close.

Hillary Clinton took subtle jabs at President Trump during her Class Day speech at Yale, which she began by pulling out a Russian hat in an apparent reference to the ongoing investigation into Russian election meddling.

Clinton also used her speech to talk about the polarization in American politics and implore the students to work to uphold American democracy.

"The radicalization of American politics hasn't been symmetrical," Clinton said. "There are leaders who blatantly incite people with hateful rhetoric."

"Waging a war on the rule of law and a free press, de-legitimizing elections, perpetrating shameless corruption, and rejecting the idea that our leaders should be public servants undermines our national unity," she added, in an apparent reference to Trump, whom she never mentioned by name.

She added that only "radical empathy" would be a substantial response to the issues plaguing the U.S.

Years and years and years ago (I'm old) i was driving home in my MGB, top dw2on, on the back roads of upstate NY pretty fcuked up..Ok very. The road was a big snake i had to stay on the back of. Hey,, it was the 60's and chicks. A deer jumps off the berm, i hit it, it falls on the windshield breaking it, falls to the ground, shakes it off and takes off. All i could think was what if it jumped into the car. Yikes.

Unless you can't deal with the position or working the lever, hold onto the Winchester. 38 specials out of that rife feel like a pop gun so recoil shouldn't be a problem. Adding a pad to it would reduce the recoil even more.

While crossing the Great State of Pennsylvania one winter day, again, impaired by fatigue, I was just following the vehicle in front of me when I passed two deer walking down the shoulder of the freeway just like pedestrians walking on a sidewalk. They were walking with the flow of traffic.

Figure it is an eight foot lane and an eight foot shoulder and those deer were about seven feet from highway traffic, steady, high speed traffic, just walking along going about their business ignoring the vehicles.

Considering buying a 1911 .45. Have a 9 mm and a .380. They have minimal recoil. I know the 45 slugs are larger and heavier, but have a slower velocity. Is there any appreciable recoil?
Posted by: Anonymous White Male at May 20, 2018 07:25 PM (9BLnV)

One thing about the 45 is that it's a low pressure round. 9mm and 40 are much higher pressure (an additional 10k psi or so, if memory serves). So it's not as snappy as the 9 and 40, even though the total amount of recoil is larger than the other two cartridges.

The snappiness is pretty manageable in the 9, because there's simply not much total recoil energy. The 40 tends to cause a lot of folks to dislike it because it's got the snappiness of the 9, but a lot more total recoil, so you really feel the snap.

In other words, what's more unpleasant, a short, sharp punch in the shoulder or a full-body shove in the same shoulder with an open hand?

Posted by: IllTemperedCur at May 20, 2018 08:52 PM (eXA4G)

215 Ruger 10/22 is a great choice. I don't even know if they're still making them, but if you can find an old Marlin 81 at a gun show ($100?), those things are built like tanks and accurate as heck.

I think the best approach would be that if I moved in, I could help him and save more money for my retirement. Not that I need to, but he has to be the old school gentleman. I would pay half the bills, which he wont let me do, but so many other things I could pay for that he would be ok with.

Savage has very nice, for the price, bolt rifles.

I have a .22 WMR and a .223.

A lot of the gator hunters on 'Swamp People' use them, but the show blurs the stock, because of the 'racist' decal on the stock!

BTW, any Northbrook IL Morons you're about to get reamed. Go over to the illinois carry website and the illinois politics forum to see how you can help with the fight this Tuesday. Literally. We need you.

Anyway, the goal is to strip away the safety argument and expose them as the virtue signalling resist movement drones that they are. No more, Mr nice guy.

262 229 So, dad just popped in at 8:30 this am. He leaves me at least one vm everyday. I talk to or see him every day. This am was striking in that he has become such a small shell of himself.

Tonight I called his best buddy, whom he sees a few time a week for happy hour.

I am contemplating approaching dad with moving in with him. No way he would move in here after 45 yrs in the same house.

I think the best approach would be that if I moved in, I could help him and save more money for my retirement. Not that I need to, but he has to be the old school gentleman. I would pay half the bills, which he wont let me do, but so many other things I could pay for that he would be ok with.

I'm torn.

Got sucked away on a semi-emergency.

Precision, light weight, accurate follow-ups.

There's a reason *EVERYONE* has gone the other direction.

Even the big heavy rounds are slim spitzers, because range.

People still use big fat heavy rounds for short/medium range big game, where you need a lot of mass and penetration, and aren't in a hurry.

His friend and my brother don't seem to know him as well as I. I spend a lot of time with him.

I've been his girl for over 29 or so years.

337 Dang, missed the thread. Shootin' match this morning, somewhat disappointed in my performance with the Garand. Actually practiced a bit with, and zeroed in the sights (for elevation/clicks) just this past week. Still, on the 100- and 175-yd plates, took me a few shots and some spotting help to get the elevation right.

But the BOOM is always satisfying. And since I was almost the only non-pea shooter there (one other guy had an M1A), everyone was entertained by the sound and fury.

Shotgun stuff was fine, but shotgun shooting is a reloading contest, not a shooting contest.

My father took care of his mother for as long as he could. When she had to go into the nursing home, they eventually took her house. He knew this would happen, and had arranged to move in with me. It lasted about 10 weeks. It was always supposed to be temporary until he found a "suitable" place, but he never seemed too interested in finding a place that fit the requirements. I chaffed under it, and finally he found a place. Ten years later, he died, and I wish like hell I had been more patient. I miss him terribly. Do it, if you can work it out.
