He's talking about SNL's cold opens (a cold open is any part of show that appears before the credits have "warmed it up," so to speak), but that's where most of the stupid political bullshit is. And I can't imagine the rest of the show is any better.Jazz Shaw's link (the first link above) ends with a cold open from the Mother's Day show in which the cast had on their mothers, many of whom complained that the constant Trump jokes weren't funny. But... that bit also wasn't funny. Even when they're knocking themselves for not being funny, they still can't manage to make it funny. By the way, the Vice article links a bunch of non-political sketches, and one political sketch that takes a shot at #WokeFeministMen who just play the feminism card to get women into bed. He says these are examples of the show really hitting its stride and being genuinely funny. He's wrong. None of these sketches are funny, including the one about #WokeFeministMen which should, in theory, appeal to me, if only on a clapter level. It's actually a very obvious and unfunny sketch of a dude sitting down next to a woman at a bar, laying down a smooth #WokeFeministRap on her, then asking making sexual propositions with decreasing levels of subtlety and calling her a "Bitch" when she says she won't. This goes on for, I think, five minor variations of the same dumb set-up/punchline. Even with a short-for-SNL runtime of 3:10, the sketch is still a padded-out grind. If this is SNL firing on all cylinders, it's time to take the car out behind the bar and shoot it in the head. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

So, this is the alternative side of the "appeal to the diminishing audience by becoming more trenchant," huh?
In order to top yourself, you have to get more and more #woke, so to speak, and you begin to peal off more and more, making your audience smaller and smaller. Posted by: TheJamesMadison at May 14, 2018 03:02 PM (9kfJR) 7

I don't remember a single time that leftists ever showed even a tiny understanding of humor.
They are a bunch of pinch-faced scolds who have no concept of the real world or the real people who live in it. The first rule of comedy is that you must be able to laugh at your own foibles. I realize why it doesn't work anymore. Anytime I try to watch anything on SNL, even when they're trying to be funny, it's the kind of "humor" you get when the head of the Woman's Guild try's to do a stand up routine at the Sunday Night Church Social.
To work, humor has to be irreverent, but that is a completely DIFFERENT thing than saying "Oh I hate my enemy so much here's how much I hate him!!!!" which is all they can do anymore. There is a huge body of leftist dogma that they are required to be ABSOLUTELY reverent to, and that kills any chance of humor at all. (See we could do humor here - Imagine a skit where Harvey Weinstein was trying to hit on Trigglypuff. Comedy Gold, man!!! but no they would all faint if anyone suggested that to them.) Caught a bit of NPR's "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me!" show on Saturday while driving with my kid. It was sooooo bad. They started with mocking Trump (naturally) then mocking Melania's "Be Best". Then moved on to mocking Romney with a quiz about what Romney has said was his favorite meat, then his second favorite meat. The jokes were essentially some guy using a funny voice pretending to be Romney saying "I like hamburgers almost as much as hotdogs" - with the host and audience laughing hysterically. It was bizarre. I can laugh at good jokes about Republicans, but this was closer to a lighthearted 2 Minutes of Hate. Posted by: Lizzy at May 14, 2018 03:14 PM (W+vEI) 92

I think fondness for particular versions of SNL amounts to nostalgia. It's been a pretty mixed bag from start to present. Some of the stuff being cited as funny, like Belushi as a samarai, is painfully unfunny to virtually anyone who's familiarity with it is postdates the original broadcast. Belushi is overrated in general; he owes most of his reputation to dying young. Sort of like Sam Kinison. I laughed hard at Kinison's routines as a teenager. But I cannot imagine listening to 20 more years of him screaming. Cf. Louis Black.

SMR doesn't stop for red lights. And there is always someone turning left in front of opposing traffic. There was a thread here about the infamous 'Boston Left Turn' where you are waiting to turn left, the light turns green, and you gun it because the other drivers will wait for you to make your left turn, except for the speeder who knows the light is about to turn green and has no intention of stopping. -boom-. For some values of "A". I haven't known most of the guests since before I quit caring about that show over 20 yrs ago when I didn't mind the damn kids on my lawn. Apparently, the only shows now more funny than SNL are the MFM news channels. I think the critics need a new alphabet rating system if what they promote are "A"s. It's interesting that the period SNL experienced a renaissance was 88-91 when you had Dennis Miller, now a conservative talker/ comedian, Rob Schneider, who has been pretty open about criticizing the left-wing slant of the show, John Lovitz, who was critical of all the class war language from the Obama admin, Victoria Jackson, who is a Christian conservative. Even Dana Carvey who is liberal hated the Obama worship on SNL. Not sure about Phil Hartman's politics RIP

The article is trying to make it sound like no biggie, but for someone Reid's age and fitness level, pancreatic cancer is very bad news." Yeah, a good friends father died of that, and i won't say anything snarky about that disease - it's one of the bad ones. Generally expected time is no more than 2 years from point of diagnosis, and often less. The SNL cast member that I think is hilarious but did not make the big time is Jim Breuer. He is a great impressionist and story teller. He also appears to be a great guy. Took care of his aging father . His stories about it are sad but funny at the same time.
Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth at May 14, 2018 03:43 PM (VzbI --- He's a good standup. I don't think he worked that well in a sketch format. But as far for being a stand-up and substantial human being, there is no doubt about that. He pretty much does family comedy these days, and I think I've heard that he's a Christian. Alot of the SNL stuff from the 1970s was not funny -best
time was whenever Dana Carvey and Mike Myers were on the show -same time as Farley IIRC. Belushi was okay sometimes but some of his stuff was just gross -like from one of the best movies to come out SNL -Animal House- look at me I'm a zit -not funny- smashes a guys guitar - hilarious for about 1 second. Liked him better in Blues Brothers. Fun stuff -but not laugh out loud funny -like Carvey's church lady. Best thing I ever saw Eddie Murphy do was the hot tub James Brown imitation. The 1980s SNL was mostly crap. There was some guy named something Brown who did weekend update -he was funny sometimes - I think they threw him off the show for being a racist. A Whitney Brown I think. Posted by: Glenn John at May 14, 2018 03:48 PM (LilNs) 370

Cavuto has one of the FOX docs on explaining what it sounds like to him. Melania had a benign mass in her kidney, and it was becoming problematic, maybe bleeding. In the old days, they would've had to go in and remove it, taking out part of the kidney. With this embolization procedure, they block off blood flow, and that shrinks the mass without have to cut into the kidney. The reason they need to keep her there is for observation to make sure it doesn't affect her kidney function, which is possible. If so, they'll have to go in there and do something else. Just like with rock music - they'll be reminiscing about the first time they watched the stuff that we were watching 40 years ago. Our culture has gone into a cul de sac, nothing new is being created that is in any way memorable. Hasn't been for 10 years at least, maybe 20. Even the vaunted Marvel Universe is just exploiting characters created several decades ago. Posted by: Tom Servo at May 14, 2018 04:05 PM (k1TUh) 464

380 Build your house on the active slope of the worlds most active volcano, on the active rift that erupted in 1955, cry for a FEMA bailout when your house is destroyed by the volcano because you didn't have volcano insurance. And get the bailout. Trump should have told them to pound sand, or ash as the case may be. Common sense says don't build where you built. How is that now my emergency?
______________________ There is no such thing as volcano insurance, at least according to the deputy insurance commissioner in Hawaii. But he says some of the damage may be covered under policies that insure "all risks," although very few people actually have such policies, as they tend to be very expensive, for all the obvious reasons. But the U.S. taxpayer always seems to get stuck picking up the tab, one way or another, for the people who choose to live in places where their houses are un-insurable due to known risks. And it shouldn't be that way. Posted by: TrivialPursuer at May 14, 2018 04:08 PM (fqUgw) 483

Accident was in 05. ======= Well, I don't feel quite as bad. But I was too quick to start joking without knowing if there were injuries. Posted by: simplemind at May 14, 2018 04:19 PM (gP3Mq) Yeah, now we've moved our accidents to the surface where highly technical advanced surface warfare vessels equipped with the most modern radar and weapons systems manage to run into giant-ass Chinese container vessels. SEE!!! SEE!!!! It's that kinda' h8ter shit right there that cost me the election...
*hic* Posted by: Hillary Clinton =========== Things that cost you the election: 1. Your complete lack of empathy, human personality, charm, grace, wit, and style. 2. Your complete lack of successful experience or stated differently, your uninterrupted public history of failure, corruption, incompetence, self-dealing and venality. 3. Your obvious plans upon election to wreak further havoc on the welfare of the country, certain portions of its citizenry, to punish your enemies and steal on behalf of your friends. and 4. The very real possibility that there would never be another president of the U.S. once you were done with the job. Posted by: simplemind at May 14, 2018 04:26 PM (xxxwr) 554
>>>The Mr. Bill Show?
I have a photo of my 5 day old son son being held by me and I am wearing a Mr. Bill t-shirt. Son turns 38 tomorrow. God I'm old. Posted by: cfo mom at May 14, 2018 04:26 PM (RfzVr) Posted by: Steve_in_SoCal at May 14, 2018 04:27 PM (bB4HN) 556
SNL always had funny commercials.
Colon Blow fiber cereal. Adobe car. Jewish Jeans. Denture lock. We watched it high as hell and always waited for the first commercial break, because that's where the ad was. It was more anticipated than Super Bowl commercials. Posted by: Steve_in_SoCal at May 14, 2018 04:29 PM (bB4HN) 557
Geez USS San Francisco (SSN-711) ran aground yesterday 350 miles south of Guam
See 473 Yesterday. Posted by: simplemind at May 14, 2018 04:17 PM (9/Lbu) It was retired in 2016, how did it get in an accident yesterday? Posted by: dagny at May 14, 2018 04:32 PM (ahV/f) 558

Posted by: DurnedYankee at May 14, 2018 04:24 PM (37IEG) Turns out they were all relying on their technology and never looked outside. Literally. By the time the blips got too bright and they looked at the actual ocean the cargo ship was 300 feet away. Posted by: dagny at May 14, 2018 04:35 PM (ahV/f) 561
Who watches these morons anyway. The SNL is must watch tv train left the station long ago.

"you never knew which way they leaned politically"
Talk about unself-awareness. They ALWAYS leaned left. Even in the so called glory days of the first two years. Left, left left. Good God. Plus they haven't really been funny since then. Imagine keeping a cadaver animated for 40 years. A body after dying starts to stink within days. SNL has stunk for 40 years. This just shows how dedicated and blindered the left is. Geeesh. they are mostly just recaps of the political news of the week performed by A-list celebrities....
objection. a-list celebrities don't appear on tv shows. they are b-list. Posted by: x at May 14, 2018 08:25 PM (nFwvY) 565
What's this fucking bullshit about how SNL used to be straight up the middle? It's always been unfunny leftists garbage.
