Strange Redfellows: The Weird Collusion Between Fusion GPS and the Russian Government

At the Wall Street Journal, by Tunku Varadarajan.

Varadarajan recounts the William Browder's history with Sergei Magnitsky and the Russian government -- gangster-entrepreneurs connected to the Russian government stole Magnitsky's money, then the government jailed Magnitsky and beat him to death him in prison when he complained of it.

In response, the US passed the Magnitsky Act, which would freeze Russian officials out of the global banking system. Something Putin and the oligarch-gangsters don't like, because they want to hide their money outside of Russia in case they ever are forced to flee from that country.

The Russians hired a law firm to try to undo the 2012 act, and that law firm hired Fusion GPS.

The law--and Mr. Browder--featured most recently in the drama surrounding the Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya, who in June 2016 met with representatives of Donald Trump's presidential campaign. The story also involves Fusion GPS, the Washington-based opposition-research firm contracted by Hillary Clinton's campaign and the Democratic Party to investigate Mr. Trump's possible Russia connections.
"Putin hates the Magnitsky Act, as we know," Mr. Browder says, "and looks for different ways to stop it. And one of his projects--well-resourced, with millions of dollars--was Veselnitskaya. She was deputized for this project because she represented the Katsyv family--Putin cronies caught up in laundering some Magnitsky money in the U.S. Some of that money enabled the purchase of apartment buildings in New York by Denis Katsyv, whose father is a government official close to Putin." (In May 2017 Mr. Katsyv's company, Prevezon Holdings, reached a $5.9 million settlement with the U.S. government, thereby avoiding a trial. The company and the Katsyvs denied any wrongdoing.)

In Mr. Browder’s account, Ms. Veselnitskaya came to America on behalf of the Katsyvs when the U.S. Justice Department began a forfeiture order for the properties. Ms. Veselnitskaya then began "a legal campaign to extricate the Katsyvs" from the case "and a political campaign to repeal the Magnitsky Act." She hired John W. Moscow, a lawyer with the firm Baker Hostetler, who "brought Glenn Simpson on as part of their team" in 2014. In his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee last August, Mr. Simpson, Fusion GPS's founder and a former Journal reporter, said his firm provided litigation support to Baker Hostetler in the Prevezon case. Mr. Browder says that Mr. Simpson "got very energized in the spring of 2016 and basically started to work on behalf of Veselnitskaya, who has since been shown to be a Russian agent."

Mr. Browder is referring to Ms. Veselnitskaya’s public acknowledgment that she is "an informant" for the Russian prosecutor general's office. "That makes her an agent," Mr. Browder insists. "So Glenn Simpson was working, effectively, also as an agent for the Russian government, as an adjunct to the Russian FSB," the KGB’s successor. "At the same time . . . he's doing this project to create a dossier on Trump."

Mr. Browder tells me he heard from reporters that as the campaign against the Magnitsky Act proceeded, Mr. Simpson was pitching a story that "Magnitsky wasn"t murdered, he died of natural causes," that "Magnitsky wasn't a whistleblower, he was a criminal," and that "Bill Browder telling this story is in contempt of Congress and perjuring himself." (Through a lawyer, Mr. Simpson declined to comment. In November Mr. Simpson testified before the House Intelligence Committee: "I obviously think Sergei Magnitsky was killed in prison by neglect, if not worse.")

He was beaten to death. How could that be "neglect"? Did they neglect to beat him in such a way that the bruises wouldn't show?

It can't be the case that Veselnitskya was a Russian agent connected to the FSB when she met with Don Trump Jr. but was not a Russian agent connected to the FSB when she hired Glenn Simpson to smear Browder and the murder victim Magnitsky's memory.

The media (apart from the WSJ and Fox and a few others) never talks about this aspect of the Fusion GPS operation. It confuses the narrative too much to have the alleged anti-Russian-influence crusader Glenn Simpson simultaneously acting as a Russian agent and influencer.

5 Strange bedfellows? How about just plain strange.

You grow up and live in this country, reaping all of the benefits of a free and open society, and an economic engine the likes of which has never been seen before, and then you run to get help to destroy it to a country that has yet, after millenia, to get any of this correct.

THAT'S strange.

And I don't mean Dr. Strange, either.

47 There are huge wide swaths of this whole Russian business I don't understand.

Not necessarily because it is hard to understand, but because I have purposely kept myself from trying to learn all the details. I don't believe it is possible to know all the details, precisely because there are factions out there, trying to tell their story, and you could probably concoct a narrative that fits your preconceived beliefs, without breaking much of a sweat. And if your loyal followers want to believe your narrative... well, they only have to read your writers, watch your news shows, pay attention to your politicians and lawyers, talking about this stuff from their point of view.

I would like to believe then, that I represent a large part of this nation's voting public. We aren't stupid, we're not disengaged, and we don't not vote. I represent people for whom ALL THIS RUSSIAN NONSENSE is silly stupid partisan hackery, and I believe it does and will have precious little impact on coming elections.

So, I was watching a little Youtube video about the movie Spartacus the other day, and there were clips of protesting American communists (tied to Dalton Trumbo).

Seriously...Russian paid agents trying to influence American politics back when they were literal communists with the stated goal of destroying the United States, and they constantly get treated so nicely. But the second Hillary Clinton cooks up a story about Russians helping Trump, and they're the greatest threat to America ever.

93 The ironic thing about this is that on the very first day of the Senate Intel Committee investigation into Russia collusion one of the first to testify was Bill Browder and his experience with Fusion GPS, Glenn Simpson and their ties to the highest levels of the Russian government. Simpson was also invited to testify, he declined. This was last July.

I, along with apparently nobody else, watched the testimony and it was pretty clear right from the jump where all of this was headed.

You can probably find Browder's testimony on the CSPAN site along with the testimony of Thor Halvorssen, a human rights activist. If anything his testimony against Fusion GPS is even more chilling.

Fusion's role in all of this has been known pretty much since day 1. The big question is who was running the op, what did Obama know and when did he know it? Given that Obama had the wife of a Fusion operative working on his communications staff while this was happening I'd say he knew it all every step of the way.

Yes, yes it is an important part of the story.
I've seen some on twitter who are using testimony over the past year to put together timelines, such as Jen Rubin reporting about concern over Russia collusion in August 2016 - published before Come supposedly had been informed of possible collusion. There's also Teele using Isakoff to leak his dossier story to then use Isakoff's story as proof in the dossier.

Think this is one of the reasons Fusion wants to keep its financed hidden.

It's not strange or weird - it's obvious they're mercenaries. But I'd agree this should be used to show how silly this "collusion" stuff is. Now Google and Facebook are banning ads to do with Ireland's abortion referendum because they claim that these ads may originate outside of Ireland and would hence be foreign influence. They're trying to give the impression that foreign influence of any kind is somehow evil so that they can parlay it into some sort of condemnation of the US administration.

Having been in our embassy in Jordan a bit, hard to see how we'd increase security there apart from putting it underground, or creating a 5-mile standoff security zone around it. F***ing fortress (though with a lamentable lack of turrets and firing ports).

Cindy had the money, which John lusted for, and the smarts, which John needed badly. John had the respectable family reputation, which Cindy knew that she could never get on her own, and the "war hero" stuff was icing on the cake to her. That's been the basis of their partnership from the start.

RUSH: I now know who the spy is. I know now know who the FBI was running in the Trump campaign. I don't think I'm gonna give you the name of the spy, but I'm gonna tell you everything the spy has done. It is the most amazing story. It is a story of entrapment. When you hear this, it's gonna infuriate you. You're gonna realize how utterly phony this entire investigation of Donald Trump is. It's phonier than you even realize now.

We all pretty much know who the spy is by now, but the rest of his story is pretty stunning. This never ends. The dirt. The entrapment. The setup.

All to cover Obama, the Clinton's and what the FBI and the rest of the corrupt did.

The link is transcript from today.

Amazing details. Don't know how Rush got them. Friends in high places.

WTF? Who is Fusion GPS? Is it the front group for Russian Spies or not? These guys do not appear to be a run of the mill political opposition research firm. They were in thick of the spycraft world and election flipping, right up to the highest offices of the USA. I think they had ex-spooks, ex-congressional aides and lobbyists working for them right? 412 Didn't Reason get dragged into court because of something said in a comment? "

People have tried suing various outlets for comments, but as far as I know they have all been thrown out. Even in cases of defamation the suit has to be against the one who made it, not the publisher.

Now, in print and online, where people get in trouble - look at the Rolling Stone lawsuit, which they lost. Not only should Rolling Stone have known the article they published was based on fake information, they were warned by the defamed parties that it was fake ahead of time, and they published it anyways. Now that is how you lose a lawsuit.

She may make it work. It's her third marriage, she's 36, and other than a D list career as an actress, this is the best gig she is gonna get.

Yes, third marriage. Her first marriage was annulled, but foreign sites had the guy's name and pics of him. Britain did too at first, then it got scrubbed.

Harry is a ManChild, she is motherly, the balance may work. Or they both may cheat on each other. Who knows. Both have a cheating records it seems.

It reminds me of a season of the Bachelor. An intense week of isolation, a long distance relationship, a few dates...and wa-la! Marriage.

I can't wish them ill, but Harry got hornswoggled, I think. Yet, he was desperate to settle down like William, so he was ready. Maybe it'll work. At least for a few years.

I was thinking the same thing, but in my fevered imagination, I was thinking about how you would play a media person. You get someone to tell the media guy the thing you want in the news, and then you get another guy, unrelated to the first, to tell the media guy the same rumor, and voila! The media guy has a story, corroborated by two different, unrelated sources and it gets reported.

You need a little more street theater to pull the scam and that is what 'cut-outs' are designed to do. We already know the media will not report a rumor that hurts democrats, but rumor will drive a republican out of public office, and the media guy gets his street cred and more sources.

But my question has always been, "Start proceedings now, and if you keep investigating and fine more, prosecute more."

Sure, people might have time to flee/destroy evidence. But you have people that have already flipped (Stzork, Page, Susan Rice(?), etc) that can already point them out, _AND_ you have the whole NSA/DIA/CIA files at your disposal (from the past administration), and if you need more? Go to FISA court and survey them now (enemies of the people of the USA and all).

423 This seems simple to me.

Simpson and Fusion GPS tried to kill two birds with one stone.

They set up the meeting between the Trump campaign and Veselnitskaya under the alleged guise that she had dirt on Hillary. On the contrary, the entire point was for her to lobby the Trump campaign against the Magnitsky Act.

BUT, since she met with the Trump campaign, Simpson could put the meeting in his Pee-pee dossier. Brilliant!!!

But also, Bullshit!!!

The Obama Cabal (I refuse to call it an "Administration"; as if there

administration to that cadre of evil assholes) is finally becoming

Obama was, and still is, a fucking HERO.
Just don't complicate things and ask us why.
