The Morning Rant: J.V. Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Anyone who has traveled abroad is aware that contrary to the pontifications of the race hustlers, we are not the most racist nation on earth. In fact, I would suggest that we are among the least racist countries. But that doesn't pay the bills or sell books, so America is painted as some horrid lynchings-are-coming nation. We need to push back...hard...against this slander. Poo-throwing might not suffice.

The Racism Treadmill

One such belief is the notion that disparities between blacks and whites—in income, housing, employment, etc.—are caused by systemic racism. The award-winning writer Ta-Nehisi Coates, for instance, summed up the state of racial progress like so: “I could see that some fifty years after the civil rights movement black people could still be found at the bottom of virtually every socioeconomic metric of note.”2 Ibram X. Kendi, another celebrated race writer, put it bluntly: “As an anti-racist, when I see racial disparities, I see racism.”

But the premise built into the thinking of Coates and Kendi is false. I call it the disparity fallacy. The disparity fallacy holds that unequal outcomes between two groups must be caused primarily by discrimination, whether overt or systemic. What’s puzzling about believers in the disparity fallacy is not that they apply the belief too broadly, but that they apply it too narrowly. Any instance of whites outperforming blacks is adduced as evidence of discrimination. But when a disparity runs the other way—that is, blacks outperforming whites—discrimination is never invoked as a causal factor.

I'll give you the short answer. It's cultural, not racial. And it is courtesy of LBJ's "Great Society," and the Democrat party's subsequent programs to buy votes and maintain a perpetually aggrieved underclass in America.

By the way, the author of this fine piece is an undergraduate! Wow.

[And...a gentle reminder that this is not an invitation for Ace's nonexistent racist friends to let their freak fly]

I think this is a fantastic idea! Guns are tightly regulated in Chicago, and law-abiding citizens are, for all intents and purposes, banned from carrying outside the home. So a convenient rental facility makes perfect sense.

Of course, in reality this stupid exhibit perpetuates the myth that legal guns are easy to obtain. Chicago exhibit replicates bike-sharing with AR-15s in gun protest art

A new protest art exhibition in Chicago gives the illusion that renting an AR-15 rifle is as easy as borrowing a bike.

The "Chicago Gun Share Program" is a new public display that replicates a bike-sharing station with 10 replicas of the controversial firearm...

Proactively “From the Sea”; an agent of change leveraging the littoral best practices for a paradigm breaking six-sigma best business case to synergize a consistent design in the global commons, rightsizing the core values supporting our mission statement via the 5-vector model through cultural diversity.

Anyway, here he is writing about the imperative to improve the weapon and caliber that our armed forces carry. The Simple, Right Thing is Often the Most Difficult Thing
For those who have studied the history, government entities had been a problem and not a solution in getting modern weapons in the hands of those on the frontline for a long time. More often than not, it is an outside force that brings the infantryman what they need;

13 Simply stated, there is no institutional, statutory or cultural racism in America.

What we have is a political party and a racism myth making industry that benefits both politically and financially by continually ripping off old scabs and ginning up new outrages.

This needs to be fought.

14 The whole point of the left regarding racism is to create an unsolveable problem.

Change definitions, change premises ("blacks can't be racist") and thereby create lifetime job security for activists while creating a permanent underclass of blacks.

49 Old racism. Disparity in outcomes shows proof of inferior genes. New racism. Disparity in outcomes shows proof of systemic racism aka white privilege.

But there is a kernel of truth to the systemic racism charge. I firmly believe that LBJ knew exactly what the great society would do, even though there were plenty of ivory tower antellectuals who thought that removing 'the violent adult black males' from the homes and better nutrition was going to be a magic cure to help poor black neighborhoods.

What this country needs are more small arms salesmen and their congressional lobbying office.

More choice; choose the calibre suitable for the task at hand. Of course, more choice will complicate logistics and make the supply officer's job more difficult; can't have that. An unhappy staff makes an unhappy plan to fail. Amateur stratigerists talk calibre, professinals talk logistics.

An old saw is a good saw.

Yup. Same with sports.

And notice that they are succeeding in meritocracies: you don't become a professional sports star unless you perform better than the rest; you don't succeed in entertainment unless you sell movie tickets/books/garner consistently high tv ratings (resulting in high ad revenue). Sure, some find a nice niche directing small, unsuccessful movies that earn awards instead of box office, but doesn't erase success of Denzel Washington, Will Smith, et al.

140 But the premise built into the thinking of Coates and Kendi is false. I call it the disparity fallacy. The disparity fallacy holds that unequal outcomes between two groups must be caused primarily by discrimination, whether overt or systemic.

This is the progressive hive mind at work. It divides people into two categories, the haves and the have-nots, the oppressors and the oppressed. And if anyone is unable get something they want or the achieve some goal in life, it's because someone else is deliberately trying to keep it from them, or take it away from them.

What's puzzling about believers in the disparity fallacy is not that they apply the belief too broadly, but that they apply it too narrowly. Any instance of whites outperforming blacks is adduced as evidence of discrimination. But when a disparity runs the other way -- that is, blacks outperforming whites -- discrimination is never invoked as a causal factor.

Shush your mouth. H8r.

174 I saw a documentary on the Indian First Peoples Wars which proposed that the cause of the wars was not so much white racism/imperialism as it was the introduction of the horse to the tribes. What were before stone age hunter gatherer tribes abandon their culture and replaced it with a horse warrior culture. The settlers simply could not abide roving bands of violent looters. I think something similar is happening with Islam. Centuries of an imperfect peace are being replaced with jihadi culture which we can neither ignore nor accept.

I'm afraid the Black Lives Matter and Antifa movements are similar. Any perceived slight or injustice is met violence regardless of the circumstances. As low as Starbucks and their ilk are willing to bow will not be low enough and we will not be able to abide their violence. Thank God that there are at least some signs that some blacks realize the futility of racial hatred. (And further I don't believe that the majority of American blacks want this constantly increasing racial animosity.)

More precisely, they're moving BACK to 7.62x39. It's kinda funny to me, because Kalashnikov was supposedly not a big fan of the move to 5.45. Guess the old Tanker had it right the first time! The Finns (who historically copied Russian loadouts, for, *ahem* informal resupply reasons) stayed with 7.62 and never went to 5.45. I'm curious as to how the Russians plan to field the 2 calibers, though. 5.45 for REMFs (easier to shoot) and 7.62x39 for frontline, maybe?

190 I don't understand the point of Salamander's "Simple right thing" article.

Developing a new weapon platform is time consuming, expensive, and nobody knows if the end result is going to be good.

The top brass are always going to want better equipment right now dammit.

Bureaucracy is always going to be an impediment to a good result, but even if you could magic wand them into streamlining the process perfectly, you STILL don't know if the end result is going to be good.

Blaming bean counters and bureaucrats is kind of a cop out. Of course they are impediments, but when it comes to new, innovative, great weapon platforms, at the core center of the process, you're counting on a miracle; the inspiration that hopefully comes to create something new and good. If it were a simple iterative process, we'd already have a clear path forward (new barrel material or lining or whatever).

So really, what's the point? There are impediments and focus is sometimes wrong and our kids are dying because they don't have the absolute best, perfect weapon and bureaucrats are slowing things down. Ok. When has this ever not been the case and in what perfect world will it not continue to be the case?

Yes.

Last I heard, Olympia got bought out by Stroh's or their parent company.

Oly found an artesan well near B'ham a few decades ago that was pretty close to the well they use in Washington. They wanted to build another brewery for the Eastern US.

But those fine upright snake-handlers wouldn't allow heathen debil alcohol to be made there. Apparently they didn't want the jobs or the tax dollars from it either.

====================

With the 5.45, they copied a trick that they used with the 7N6 "Sniper" ammo: an air pocket in the tip underneath the jacket. It gives better long range ballistics, and as a bonus, causes it to tumble like mad. I think it was the Brits who first stumbled onto this with Mk VI ball: initally it had an aluminum tip under the jacket but switched to wood pulp during WW1. M193 5.56 does its own nastiness, provided it doesn't get deflected or shattered by brush: Massive cavitation on impact causing horrific wounds within 3 to 4 hundred yards. I think 5.56 would have a simlar rep to 5.45 had it first been fielded in the desert like 5.45.

And no, it is not racist to recognize IQ differences in races ... it is hard science. But many call that freak flag racism ... but that is PC nonsense)

there are obvious strong ties between race and culture. I watched some of the BBC coverage of the election night recently, and one guy was pointing out how Trump won rust belt states where the white population was higher than the national average. Michigan was like 76% white iirc, while the national average is like 62% white.

And they pointed out that Trump won with white women as well. American coverage was much less open about the "white vote" except to call whites racist haters for voting "America First".

If blacks and "white Hispanics" are to thrive, we should stop flooding the labor market with cheap foreign labor, and start serving American interests first, rather than pretending China trades "fairly". (and why trade with China at all instead of employing Americans in Detroit?)

256 There is another, fourth category of possibility: other than to blame "the race" (being racist), blaming "racism" or blaming "culture." That is not to blame, but to accept that the interplay of individual and cultural differences produces different outcomes for individuals, and that the only way to create "equal" outcomes would be to crush both individualism and culture.

Obviously this is not so much about the extreme ends of social pathology (crime, extreme poverty, in which case the blame/change culture argument is probably the strongest). But for all the less-extreme stuff, e.g. percentages in the sciences, at a particular college, in a sports program, in a music studio etc I say vive la difference and get on with our own lives.

Or save it for the second-line troops the way the Russians do.

There's no problem that can't be overcome far more cheaply for the price of one F35.

270 230 I like 7.62x39 for engagements out to 200.

The bullet drop is pretty ugly after that.

Now that works if you're mostly going to do urban ops but if you need to take a shot at 400...I can't endorse 7.62x39.

The AK is a true assault rifle, intended to be used by assaulting Russian/Warsaw Pact troops using Russian mechanized assault doctrine. (That Doctrine works damn well, by the way.)

I've been hearing good things about 6.8 and 6.5 for a few years now. There's no reason we can't switch to that caliber in 3 years time. None. Except the Military could fuck up a wet dream.

I think the Serbs are planning to go to 6.5 Grendel. It'd be a damn near ideal caliber: Fast, high penetrating short range loads around 100gn for infantry, heavier, but flatter shooting 120 to 130 grn loads for DMR, and hot heavy 130 grn loads for the SAW. I've seen heavier loads for it that approach 139grn 6.5 Swede milsurp out of a rifle barrel. You'd have a round that's a damn sight more flexible than 5.56.

And when you can't see the progress, that's a failure of your faith, you're spouting heresy against the magic elixir that is Diversity--it must be because you have a mark of HATE hidden in your soul.

It's perfect for closing the mind around it. Beat people when they can't see it, reward them when they parrot the dogma. Even though, I'm a sizable enough fan of diversity, I must analyze.

312 The 30-06, which is an appropriate caliber to use on Bears and Elk, did a great job of killing humans. The 5.56 was adopted by the military because they figured out wounding the enemy tied up more of their troops than killing them did. In fact the modern AR rifles have a tighter twist rate than the Vietnam era M-16s partly to lessen even more the kill rate of common 5.56 ammo; so that it doesn't tumble and fragment when it hits an enemy soldier. While the tying up the troops theory holds true with regular armies, I am not so sure its a good idea against Jihadis.

323 @blaster

I'm with you to a point. We, and our allies, have made the 5.56 work. But the cartridge has also gotten people killed by not being as effective as it could be. Especially out of the 14 inch M4 barrel. (out of a 20 inch rifle, 5.56 gets enough velocity to do impressive damage)

Our tactics are mostly not rifle tactics, that was true in WW 2 as well. Machine guns and artillery do most of our killing.

But the 5.56 a pain point and a problem and it's a solvable one.

If we keep giving in to the a-holes, how long will it be before the electric company shuts off your power because you are a "racist?" Kinda my thought.

We have plenty of 7.62 and plenty of things that send it downrange. If we have troops that need more range then give them some of those.

In 2002-2003 you couldn't hardly find an AR-10 because somebody was buying them all up. And sending them to Afghanistan.

AR10s make a lot of sense, you retain a lot of training and manual of arms.

378 "there's a problem with the metric itself; IQ is an imperfect measure.

Posted by: Anonosaurus Wrecks

imperfect sure ... but still quite real. Races are mixed as well, yet diversity demands promotion of some races ... quotas, though SCOTUS changed (unconstitutional) quotas to "diversity interests" or some such BS.

"Diversity" in nature kinda works because the weak don't survive. A culture that forces the weak to survive, while advocating the strong don't have more than two children ... that culture dies. Idiocy wrapped in a commie enigma ...

But LBJ's great society was to the "black community's" detriment, as they were strong family oriented often "Republican" until then. Scalia was shouted down as racist for his opinion that they should go to colleges "at their level" (or some such phrase that got deemed racist).

His point was that they were set up to fail in college because the quota system put them (as a whole, plenty of blacks smarter than me) ahead of their abilities by adding 300 points to their SATs. We see this constantly ... incompetent people promoted based on race.

A couple decades back a guy way up in Chevron told me he thought women were hurt by that same drive for diversity, where they pushed women ahead before they were ready. It makes for all sorts of resentments and problems, regardless of how sincere the effort.

408 The only thing I know about Ta-Nehisi Coates is that
he said that Melissa Harris-Perry was the leading intellectual of our
day. And he wrote a comic book that claimed white people like
mayonnaise. I think his most valuable contribution to literature is that
ace has tore into him a number of times, once on the old podcast, thus
providing inspiration for some good comic rants.

I'm embarrassed that my alma mater invited him to speak last year and gave him an official varnish of respectability. I can't imagine that went over well with the Corps.

411 I recommend Thomas Sowell's book, 'Black Rednecks and White Liberals'.

https://preview.tinyurl.com/hqd2s23

Sowell does a good job of documenting the statistical/demographic divide between cultures, and identifying the underlying historical causes/sources of those differences.

An excerpt:

"Today, the culture that is celebrated in much of the media and in the schools is not the culture that succeeded, but the culture that has failed -- the black redneck culture."

Don't imagine that the book is solely a condemnation of black culture, it isn't. It points out that in no small measure, it is white and black society that have been an enablers of cultural dysfunction and consequent waste.

I note that are 426 Amazon reviews, and it earns 5 Stars.

Thanks FS, but I'm really tired of all the constant bullshit. It just never gets any better and it never slows down. It's just one bad thing after another, all the time while watching a whole lot of other people get anything they want just because they want it.

415 What is excessively clever about the current incarnation of the Left's various bullshit racisms is that to disagree with them AUTOMATICALLY makes you take a position that sounds overtly racist.

They have learned to do the same with other hot button issues. Their bullshit is so over the top ridiculous that it corners you into sounding like a jerk to just counterweight nevermind full fledged disagree with it.

Trump won because he speaks the truth without giving a shit what it *sounds* like.

416 Whenever people talk of economic disparity, they NEVER talk about white people at the bottom of the economic ladder. Why is that? Is is only racist when it is black folks who are poor?

I would like to know how many people in Chicago were murdered by someone with an AR-15 rifle. I'd bet a lot of money that the number is much closer to zero than the so-called artist thinks.

418 Barring brain damage of sorts everyone has about the same amount of neurons. However people use them differently. The black athletes I have coached are physical geniuses; they can look at somebody doing something and adjust their muscles to do the same things. People are equal, that does not mean they are identical.

If you have enough neurons in some area to be above average in something you have to be below average in something else. That is what is meant by: "No man is an island, complete in himself." Learning a computer language is easy for me, learning another human language nearly impossible; I liked French 101 so much I took it 4 times.

419 Re: The Race Treadmill. Great, great piece.

And one more shameful thing about Obama stood out. The recollection by the author where Obama criticized people for mocking blacks who "act white" or for defining the black experience for them -- all the while, how many times did that sob sit by while his compatriots on the Left tried to delegitimize or tear to pieces black conservatives for daring to differ in their opinions on policy?

420 "The disparity fallacy holds that unequal outcomes between two groups
must be caused primarily by discrimination, whether overt or systemic."

Yes. And the fact that white guys don't get to jump like black guys do, is clear evidence of overt or systemic discrimination against whites in the NBA.

421 Many black people feel race relations have never been worse, and they do not blame whites for it.

Of course, the media doesn't interview them.

All of this stuff would not have taken hold without the constant pounding by the media, who also gave it legitimacy.

Which is why I despise them with the heat and power of a thousand suns.

(Coates I despise too. He is a race baiter and divider. A crybully. He did give us the White Amulet of Privilege or something. Which still cracks me up.)

Greetings:
I
guess that I one of those "outliers" when it comes to the M-16. The
one I was issued (Jan '69) had a 6-digit serial number so it wasn't a
newby. And I marginally modified it by swapping its front-end with a
CAR-15 one, building up the dreaded pistol grip with T-shirt strips, and
rearranging the sling to a top-mount. I cleaned it every day (maybe
twice on helicopter or monsoon intensive days) with shaving brushes and
toothbrushes and such and added fresh lubricants. I wasn't a
master-blaster; my father had hipped me to the 3-shot burst from his BAR
days and, if not that, I was on semi-auto. Thankfully, early on my
favorite Platoon Sergeant explained to us that the basic combat load was
22 magazines but we humped 29. And at 18 rounds per, that a lot of ammo
and a good bit of weight. I never had an equipment failure in a
firefight. So, I tend to view these sad songs in regard to something
that my father told me in regard to something else, "It's not the wand,
it's the magician."
The one thing that astounded me (and never
seems to get mentioned) is that, that far into the M-16's lifespan, the
US Army was still so strongly committed to the 20-round magazine while
every AK-47 in God's green jungle had a 30-rounder locked in. We
actually had to have 30-rounders sent from the States via a civilian
supply chain. Now that's some serious level stupidity.

Except it takes at least 7 years to grow whiskey, and only a couple of months to grow Bud Light.
