Saturday Night Joke

A Marine squad was marching north of Fallujah when they came upon an Iraqi terrorist who was badly injured and unconscious. On the opposite side of the road was an American Marine in a similar but less serious state. The Marine was conscious and alert and as first aid was given to both men, the Squad Leader asked the injured Marine what had happened.

The Marine reported, "I was heavily armed and moving north along the highway here, and coming south was a heavily armed insurgent. We saw each other and both took cover in the ditches along the road. I yelled to him that Saddam Hussein was a miserable, lowlife scum bag who got what he deserved.”

He yelled back, "Barack Obama is a lying, good-for-nothing, left wing Commie who isn't even an American.

So I said, "Osama Bin Laden dresses and acts like a frigid, mean-spirited lesbian!

He retaliated by yelling, "Oh yeah? Well, so does Nancy Pelosi!”

And, there we were, in the middle of the road, shaking hands, when a truck hit us.

Cochrans and leprechauns If Ireland didn't have enough problems.

Ireland has a goat problem.

A growing gang of wild goats is having its way with the towns of Ennis and Clare's gardens, parking lots and roads. Greenery is being devoured. Cars are being forced to slow or stop, with all too much frequency, for fear that drivers could end up having to pick goat meat out of their vehicle's grills with a pointy stick. According to Clare's Mayor, Tom McNamara, “the disturbance that these goats are causing in the locality is totally unacceptable." The Mayor continued by pleading that the goats “are getting up on top of cars and going around businesses at night time." The goats, which have been tagging local homes and historical landmarks as they expand their territory, have drawn the attention of the local law enforcement's gang task force.

OK, that last sentence was bullshit, but it'd be awesome if it were true.

No fleas. No walks. No "landmines". Boston Dynamics' SpotMini robot dog goes on sale in 2019.

SpotMini, Boston Dynamics' agile four-legged robot, will go on sale next year for companies that want a mechanical quadruped to get to places a wheeled device can't reach.

Boston Dynamics has 10 SpotMini prototypes now and will work with manufacturing partners to build 100 this year, company co-founder and President Marc Raibert said at a TechCrunch robotics conference Friday. "That's a prelude to getting into a higher rate of production" in anticipation of sales next year, he said.

Virtue signaling takes on many shapes and forms.

From co-founder Gale Epstein’s very first designs using repurposed handkerchiefs, sustainability has been a core value for Hanky Panky’s 4+ decades in business. Unlike nearly every other category of clothing made, worn underwear cannot be accepted for reuse. Lingerie fabrics can last for decades before biodegrading. With all this in mind, we are proud to announce Lingeriecycle™, our new sustainability initiative to help divert worn out and no longer wearable items from landfills. Even though there are processing costs, it is an expense that Hanky Panky is covering for our customers in order to take responsibility for our products. It is the right thing to do for the planet. We hope that in the future, all brands and retailers will take responsibility for the entire lifecycle of the items they sell, and we are proud to lead the way for the lingerie industry to transition into a sustainable future.

Do you know or have you heard of Mario Salcedo? Supposedly he is the happiest man in the world.

For nearly two decades, Mario had been living out of his suitcase, traveling extensively for his corporate job as the director of international finance at a multinational corporation. He spent more time in and out of hotel rooms scattered across Latin America than he did at his home in Miami. After working nonstop for nearly 21 years, Mario — burned out — decided it was time to pursue a lifelong goal: to travel around the world, without leaving home. In 1997, he quit his job, packed an even bigger suitcase and quietly disappeared from the lives of his friends and family to pursue a new life on the open water.

If you are trying to make your name as a comedian try not to be a Genius Award Winner.

One left-wing comedian learned a tough lesson last weekend from the Department of Homeland Security about why making “jokes” about killing government officials tends to be a really bad idea.

Brooklyn comedian Jake Flores’ troubles began last Saturday, when he posted a series of jokes encouraging white people to atone for their Cinco de Mayo “cultural appropriation” by killing U.S. Immigration and Customs

44 AI robots blow a hydraulic hose and get fluid all over your wool rugs and track it everywhere. The batteries malfunction and overheat and catch your house on fire. The AI firemen show up and ruin what the fire didn't. The software updates right in the middle of what they were doing and they catch the kitchen on fire if they were cooking, if not they just stand there twitching. If they're near anything valuable they'll knock it over. They keep an eye on you and tell Mueller's robots what you have been up too. Even the little Roomba's are snitches.

90 ONT Greetings, Horde!

Love the photo up top, of that pair of eagles. Got to see some of those *very* up close while on an Alaska cruise ... charter boat captain had one in a certain cove, that he'd trained to respond to his whistle.

The bird would fly down and snatch a dead bait fish which had been tossed into the water, sometimes only four or five feet from the gunwale.

That's close enough to feel the "whoosh" of wind left behind as the eagle flew past.

Very, VERY impressive bird!

Lamb is a lot better tasting, I think. But I know in Mexican/Hispanic cooking, they don't really see much difference at all between mutton and goat.

Eating lamb seems cruel, but people do it because mutton tends to be greasy and gamey tasting.

Goat and lamb are both good. But they have to be cooked with more precision than beef. Many Americans hated lamb back in the day because it was cooked like shite. Sure it is strong flavored, particularly the old mutton they used to serve, but that is where technique comes in.

Even in well-stocked grocery stores, there are lots of things that just don't sell - fair enough, if nobody buys them, they're not going to carry them. I was pretty well resigned to making chicken stock from dozen-packs of wings and drumsticks until I found out the Oriental Mart has whole frozen stewing hens. I can't blame Kroger for not stocking them though, I'm sure if there was a demand, they would.

This person must have been from a huge family because every time the elevator stopped, a few more people arrived. For a day and a half, I could hear happy, joyous voices and a whole lot of laughter. I truly envied that person to have such a wonderful family gathered around him/her and spend their last hours surrounded by the sound of cheerful voices and laughter. I wish that for your sister.

Young goat is delicious. I am on my second one, raised for me by a friend. If you had only had goat, never lamb, you would think lamb was gamey and hard to like. Lamb fat is gamey. Most people don't like it, though I think it's OK. Young goat fat is sweet and delicious.

I know I won't convince anyone who has not had it -- I grossed out the food thread with my goat opinions. But maybe someone will decide to try it at some point, and see what I am talking about. Exactly. It's this modern "food channel" trend or something. Tough shins and cow tails that take hours to become tender are supposed to be reviled and cheap. Even chicken wings used to be cheap like that. But word got out about the flavor.

It would have been cool to see what a North American cameloid would look like today. Maybe the geneticists trying to revive the mammoth could go frankenstein up some of those cameloids too.

327 163 -- Quint: I have been kvetching up a storm the last few years about meat that is so lean there is no taste. It might as well be cardboard. Any more, round steak doesn't get within miles of my shopping cart. And just try to find a pork chop with even a mere speck of fat.

When I was a kid, my mother would occasionally roast a leg of lamb for Sunday dinner. I wish I had paid more attention to how she fixed it. I know she rubbed it with rosemary and poured a goodly amount of red cooking wine over it before popping the lid on and putting it in the oven. Funny story: my primary care doctor is from Jordan. One visit, he wistfully asked me if I knew where to find a decent leg of lamb. I had to tell him no, that decent lamb in the Omaha area is just a pipe dream.

I scored big today. Himself loves Chinese pepper steak. Years ago, I used to make it with tri tip steak sliced thin, and it was a thing of beauty. But then the price of tri tip steak shot through the roof and kept on going. I was at Wally World today and found a package of it for dirt cheap. All that beautiful marveling -- I nearly passed out with joy. So, for once, we're going to have a decent pot of pepper steak.

If those peoples could have got Caribbean sailors, Purumpecha metalsmiths, Aztec warriors, and Comanche riders to agree in this counterfactual, imagine that lot dropping a bunch of Comanche horsemen into Aquitaine around, oh, 450 AD or so.

Yeah, Europe would have been fucked. Think, Dothraki horde.

346 Lamb has an affinity for fire... open grill.
Get a leg, debone it and it will be wider in the middle than on the ends. Olive oil, garlic, thyme, rosemary.
When you grill it, the thicker part will be rare, and the ends will be medium or well.
I must be of lamb-eating extraction, cause my reaction to the smell of it grilling is downright primitive.

I don't do layers because they take too long to grow out and look like a choppy mess the next week after you get them.
It's all one length, no bangs.

355 303 Remember the article Ace wrote about the "Diversity & Comics" youtube guy and his new graphic novel? About how fans were taking comic books back from the sjw industry?

Well, some people threatened the publisher. Some stores said they'll boycott them and then another writer, Mark Waid got involved. Now today the publisher caved and will not publish the guy's book. Some drivel about "we believe in artistic freedom,... but"."

when ace was posting that, I was thinking that the industry may be too far gone to save. These people shutting him out are thinking "haha, we'll stay in control" but actually they're going to kill that segment.

How it would happen - first less and less people go to the comic stores, and they go broke and shut down across the country. If a mega chain like Borders can go into liquidation, so can the comic stores which have no where near the financial resources Borders had. Next, the Marvel franchise burns out as it is taken over by idiotic writing. Again, not hard to imagine as we are watching the Star Wars franchise burn out in real time.

And after that, "comics" as an industry just goes dark for 30 or 40 years - no one sells them anymore, and consequently no one makes them, except for the odd little internet corners.

maybe a future generation will pick the art form back up again, but only after everyone involved in it today has left it for good.

163 I think it is getting better these days. The late 90s and early 000s were when the fat free chicken and pork tenderloins really ruled the roost. One funny thing, these animals, particularly the pork, were engineered to be basically fat free. The result was that recommended cooking temperatures from the FDA and even on kitchen thermometers were way off. Also, the trichinosis risk is way down compared to earlier decades. Basically, if you cooked pork in particular to the level recommended, it was dry as hell and flavorless. There was no fat to baste it at all.

There are more options now if you seek them out. But domestic "heritage" meats cost.

I gotta call a miss on this one, ma'am.

The song was about the L.A. Low Rider car culture. "Low Sparkin' ", referred to the sparks resulting from a car with a near-zero ground clearance, as the chassis and various underpinnings (mufflers, primarily), made contact with high spots in the road.

"High Heeled Boys". Self explanatory in the era of the Platform Heels, bell-bottomed pants and other ...*ahem* LOUD attire concurrent with not only the Low Rider world, but much of Drug Angeles of the day.

And the ETHOS of the Low Rider. Low and Slow. Nothing phases ya. Especially not the horns being blared by other drivers whom you're slowing down, by your own slow roll. A Low Rider also, isn't taken in by "The Man's" Con Game. Hence, the line about the Man in the Suit driving a new car, etc.

Dig into that Low Rider culture. It still exists today... hell... it's never actually gone away.

Marvel Comics is doomed. There's no coming back. It's probably why they're not trying very hard to rectify things other than the bleeding obvious... and even then they "fix" one thing and go full retard on another, having not learned a damn thing. They made their bed awhile ago in a arrogant business model that shafted the buyers and retailers as they thought the millions of copies per issue sold back in the 80's and 90's could be parlayed into ransom. they were wrong. They throttled their own supply/buy base and now only sell relative handfuls of issues. Then they went batshit crazy with content around the Jemas/Quesada era and the die was cast. They're done. Even if they tried returning to the silver age in quality, they lost contact with the public and lost buyers and outlets. With the decine of hard copy paper sales of anything these days, they needed to maintain a constant, ongoing base of buyers, plus rope in the youth as new buyers against the trend. They didn't. They bet everything on ransoming a relatively fixed segment of middle age men only. Doom.

427 Lamb, according to my palate is best seasoned, if seasoning is deemed necessary, with garlic and thyme. We cook leg of lamb stuffed with green olives and garlic clove rubbed down with olive oil and thyme before going into the oven. We raise and eat a lot of lamb. Lamb chops are seasoned with salt and a little sprinkling of thyme and lemon juice. Medium rare is the only way to go.

We always extract the bone marrow and it is a special treat. Lamb liver is also a rich meal. Kidneys and tripe in general is a treat for the dogs.

So she lets Buckley the Wonder Dog out in the morning, he gets sprayed by a skunk. She lets him back in the house, doesn't notice the smell and heads off to work. We get back and find that he has spent time during the day on our bed, the couch, two or three area rugs and a day bed. We had to air out the entire house when we got home. Several loads of laundry, a bath for the dog, baking soda and vacuum all the area rugs and we were finally able to get a handle on it.

463 I don't buy the idea that spices were used to mask the taste of rotten meat. If you could afford to eat meat in the first place, you were so rich you could afford to eat the best, freshest cuts whenever you wanted to. If you could afford it only a few times a year - maybe because you were raising the animals yourself - you had preservation techniques like salting and drying that make it taste good enough that people still make jerky and bacon even though we could be eating only fresh beef or pork if we wanted to. And if you could afford spices, which were so valuable that people fought wars over them, then you could certainly afford fresh meat.

I think warm climates are just where spices come from, so that's what people use in their cuisines there.

467 Some guy in Omaha wanted to create a unique butcher shop. He would have a pen with live goats, one with chickens, one with lambs, and a cow or two. You would peruse the critters, pick out the one you liked, and it would be butchered and dressed out for you while you waited. (I imagine it took much longer for a cow. You probably came back for it the next day.) The feedback on that was mixed, to say the least. The PETA types nearly stroked out, but the recently arrived from South of the border thought it was just like home. I haven't heard anything lately, so it might or might not still be in the works.

South Omaha has a huge Hispanic population, so we also have several Hispanic grocery stores. Cruising the meat case is interesting. But goat takes up a lot of space. Unfortunately, there are other items that are not for the weak of heart.

*******

Once took a glacier tour boat in Alaska. The skipper maneuvered close to an ice floe with a bald eagle perched on top. We were maybe 20-30 feet away. The bird raised up on his toes and spread his wings as if he was getting set to fly off. Every camera on the boat snapped at exactly the moment the eagle let go a big load of eagle poop down the front of the ice, then he settled back down in his perched position, with a rather smug look on his face I thought.

484 To explain, there are beef cattle (stocky and bred to gain weight quickly) and dairy cattle (leaner and bred for milking). Goats are the same. Most meat goats are Boers. They're very blocky looking and muscular. Folks seem to cross them with Nubians, which is about the only dairy breed in this area.

And, I did own a buck goat. Modern goatkeeping separates the bucks from the does to control when they are bred. The buck pees on his beard to attract the ladies. That's why folks tell you they stink. If you keep the bucks in with the does, they get a musky smell but don't stink as much.

There are a lot of theories. These things evolve over time for a reason. I always heard that spicy food induces sweating, which cools the body. They also say spices can be antimicrobial. So you don't get sick.
Look at food and wine pairings. When it doubt, if you choose classic dishes from a specific region, you won't go far wrong choosing wines from the same region. Again, these things have evolved over time.

There's a huge difference between 'going slightly off' and 'actually rotten'. And another between a long stew or braise to break down cheap cuts of meat and feeding inedible meat to poor people. I know people can develop tolerances to bacteria, but actually tainted food doesn't lose toxicity when it's cooked, and the only spice that can mask actually rotting meat is thermite.

I suppose Arya is another Mary-Sue, but something in me likes Arya better. Maybe because Arya's just a horrible murderess who doesn't pretend to be anything else. Daenerys pretends to be this great dragon lady saviour of the planet when she burns people alive.

And Daenerys has Hapsburg-tier DNA. She is the Mad Queen even if GRRM doesn't want her to be.

Smoked trout/mackerel with horseradish whipped cream sauce.

The pairing is incredible, not to mention delicious. Every time I happen to see it on a menu, I order it. The whipped cream works with the smoky fish and the horseradish gives it that nasal-clearing, tingly bite. One of my favorite dishes I never make at home.

OK, but that's all about writing. My comment was about Clarke as an actor.

And I agree with you about the contradictions in that character. Especially how she plays at being anti-slavery while her army of freed slaves are really little better than slaves under her rule.

520 Himself's and my favorite cut of meat is "manager's special". But you don't want to let it hang out in the fridge too long. Either directly into the freezer or into the pot by the end of the second day. And I have been known to season the bejeebers out of a manager's special that has that somewhat off smell of meat that's been sitting too long. Makes good curry or chili if you use enough spice.

Heh. Rant away.

I disagree with you a bit about great actor / complex role thing. Most actors will say that they love the flaws in a character. It gives them something to work with; to build their portrayal around. If you have to play a Mary Sue, it seems to me that would be the tougher role to do well.

Anyway, I have to admit that Clarke's T&A helps me to appreciate her acting skills.

I do recall reading that. Against the bear and the dragon, yeah the turkey woulda sucked big time.

It's hard to soar like an eagle when you hang out with turkeys.

Ole Ben fucked that one up.

Posted by: GnuBreed at May 13, 2018 02:32 AM (0ogQG)

627 GnuBreed, the weird thing is Franklin's wanting the wild turkey as our symbol had some firm footing. The wild turkey is wily and hard to hunt as well as being strictly native to North America, unlike an eagle; even ancient Rome had the eagle as a symbol. That was Franklin's reasoning. I don't think the negative connotations of 'being such a turkey' were around at that time.

But we did dodge a bullet on that one, for sure.
