For Some Reason, Revelation That FBI's Highest Officers Were Leakers and Liars Is Undermining Their Credibility in Trial Courts

The FBI, like the media, is wondering why the public stopped believing them.

Hint: I think it had to do with all the lies and incompetence. But I can't be sure. You should wiretap me and raid my office to find if I have any other additional information about it.

In the course of two dozen interviews for this story, agents and others expressed concern that the tumult is threatening the cooperation of informants, local and state police officials, and allies overseas. Even those who lived through past crises say the current one is more damaging. "We've seen ups and downs, but I've never seen anything like this," says Robert Anderson, a senior official at the FBI who retired in 2015.
The FBI's crisis of credibility appears to have seeped into the jury room. The number of convictions in FBI-led investigations has declined in each of the last five years, dropping nearly 11% over that period, according to a TIME analysis of data obtained from the Justice Department by researchers at Syracuse University. "We've already seen where the bad guys and witnesses look at those FBI credentials, and it might not carry the same weight anymore," says O’Connor.
Indeed, public support for the FBI has plunged. A PBS NewsHour survey in April showed a 10-point drop–from 71% to 61%--in the prior two months among Americans who thought the FBI was "just trying to do its job" and an 8-point jump--from 23% to 31%--among those who thought it was "biased against the Trump Administration."

And the thing is, the FBI apparently lives by their conviction rate.

When my father was CO of the Marine security contingent on a naval base (Federal property) he worked closely with the FBI, and used to complain that they wouldn't prosecute unless a case was a slam dunk, because they wanted to keep their conviction rate high.

Discussed this with my bro recently. What we came up with? Get rid of the Cabinet position. Also, shut down CIA, NSA, and FBI. Fire every last soul. Wrap up all current prosecutions and fire all the US Attorneys.

Go on a hiring spree at US Marshals and DIA (as they haven't covered themselves in effluvium, as far as I can tell), and transfer those agencies duties over. Refer prosecutions to the States, who will commensurately have to hire new attorneys.

Reinstate that Cabinet position (whatever you decide to call it), during this interregnum. Transfer the new-hires from aforementioned agencies to the new Department/s.

Just f-ing start over. No one whose held a career in federal civilian law enforcement/intelligence is trustworthy.

As demonstrated with the Bundy case: they were so intent on getting a conviction they did illegal stuff. Yeah, doing illegal stuff tends to make you LOSE cases once people are onto you.

I would imagine the same thing with the 4 wrongly convicted related to Whitey Bulger: more important to convict someone than convict the *right* people. That loses you credibility, too.

It is 44 pages long, and 29 of those pages are COMPLETELY redacted. Which is why Manafort has demanded a Bill of Particulars from the US Government (i.e., what the fuck is it that you clowns think you have on me?).

Interesting reading if you are an attorney or former attorney.

The really bad parts seem to have started in the late 80s, early 90s. I'm not sure if that's because the mob was basically gone by then so they had more time on their hands, or because the Cold War ending reduced their side of things, and they needed to look good to congress or what. Because before that they might have messed up but I'm unaware of anything like the Bulger debacle or the other, similar and lesser known cases like it that started up around that time.

It is worth noting that for being a power hungry, corrupt scumbag, Hoover did a pretty good job of keeping the beast under control. Once he was gone, it kind of metastasized.

So yeah, existential crisis for the FBI, and to some extent the DOJ. But the DOJ is a blazing clown car - to borrow an image - and the flaming clown boners represent, to a great extent, the trashing of a key and formerly esteemed American institution.

Everything is usually worse at the federal level simply because there is less accountability. It's so far removed from the people and there is no higher power to check it.

If my local police pulled all of this political stuff, we would scream. And the cops, who live right down the road, would hear it. The county board would hear it.

Of course I'm talking about localities that are small in population but that's the point. The smaller the better, as far as scrutiny and complaint is concerned.

People are corrupt, from tiny villages to big empires.
But it's harder to hide in the village.
