102 If Delaroche wanted to portray a final and grudging defeat, he suceeded. The symbols and colors of power are there but are now dusty and tarnished. Napoleon's figure, previously shown as fit and imperial which the viewers would remember, is slumped, tired, and no longer young and fit. But there is still a spark of fire and steel in his eyes. He had to bow to the inevitable but it isn't total despair. I find it an evocative, powerful image.

Looking at some of Delaroch's other works on Wiki, they are impressive. They also have a feel of illustration. I wonder if he was an influence on Wyeth and others of that period.

This was painted in 1846. Napoleon was long dead by then. In France, around this time, there was a Bonapartist revival. Delaroche could be reacting to that. I know JMW Turner painted this one because of it: https://tinyurl.com/yczgx759

Well yeah. In order for a psychopath to achieve greatness (or near greatness), they must be a genius, with "some good ideas." Otherwise, they just end up in prison with the rest of their lot.
Stalin, Hilter, Mao... hell, if you want to go there, Bill Clinton. These guys were/are smart men. Very smart. They were NOT always wrong, and they were able to get decent people to miss the evil... some of the time, at least.

I looked at it, and to me it looks like a total engine failure at low speed and low altitude, which is always fatal. The unusual part is that it looks like both engines on the left side must have shut down together. You can see the plane start to stall, then the left wing drops, and as it drops the wings go vertical, they lose all remaining lift and the plane falls like a rock.

Someone said online that the pilot tried to avoid cars - bullshit, the cars just got lucky. Not to mean any disrespect towards the pilot or crew, but once that plane went nose down it was just a chunk of metal falling out of the sky, no one on board had anything to do with where it landed.

Someone raised the question about his semi trucks super optimistic range of 500-600 miles, and he pulled an appeal to authority (I studied physics in college).

He also complained about "day traders" and said he'd rather they just sell his stock. Obviously he's feeling the heat RE his stock performance and is trying to stave off those questions by telling people he's uninterested in pleasing "day traders".

I am inclined to go along with the conclusion of several scholars who conclude that Hannibal was defeated more by the Roman military system and attitude than any specific commander. Every time Hannibal socked it to the Romans in Italy they refused to surrender and raised another army. At the same time their armies in Spain and Sicily worked upon weakening his supply lines, and defeating Carthaginian generals who were not Hannibal. Hannibal also was unable to get Rome's allied cities to leave the Republic and change sides. So Hannibal's big wins had no strategic benefit in the long run.

Oh yes, Musk also complained about how there are a million or so auto fatalities a year, and nobody talks about those. But when an automated car, safer than a human driver, has a fatality, it's big news.

I think he has a point. People have a hard time quantifying risk. If automated cars really are safer than human drivers, it's irresponsible of news people to hype deaths.

Of course, the news people can't help themselves. Maybe in 30 years it won't be a big deal anymore, but for now, it'll always be news.

ISTR a couple did. Then the Romans reminded them and everyone else why that was a bad idea.

Hannibal's problem was operating on his own, without an actual supply line. His whole expedition was funded by his family's holdings in Spain; Carthage refused to give him more than a pittance, even after Cannae.

Had Carthage backed him, they could have sent siege engineers to him after Cannae and cracked Rome itself.

.Hannibal had zero chance of defeating Rome with his invasion. The best he could hope for was that Rome would get tired of him and call it quits by signing a peace treaty with Carthage.

When that didn't happen after Hannibal destroyed the first three or four Legions that Rome sent after him, he knew it was pretty much over and went over to a persisting strategy which did not work in the long run.

As far as Carthage and Scipio Afranicus go.....he used the Roman Legion system to it's fullest and destroyed their Army in the field and then their City.

I've seen analysis that puts the battery energy density improvement rate at 5-8% per year.

There are a lot of problems preventing a huge breakthrough. One is each area of research for a new type of battery requires a damn expensive research test facility. Another is Li-ion batteries are still improving (for now), so a fair amount of research dollars are dedicated to that.

IF we grew at a steady 8% annually, it'll still take over 40 years for batteries to have the same energy density of gasoline.

If the left points out that Trump lied about hush money to Stormy Daniels and you counter that Obama's promise that we could keep our healthcare plans was more substantial, the programmers of the left have promoted the idea that this is "whataboutism".

In other words, its a way for the left to make claims divorced from any realistic contrast.

This is something they will not do. And you KNOW they won't do it. If you find something universally agreeable about Mike Pence, do they admit it or do they perform Starship Trooper mechsuit jumps to "HE STILL WANTS TO SHOCK GAYS!!!"

This is not "whataboutism" to them, this is a "bigger picture".

Remember it's always something different and justified when the self-flattering left wants to do that.

Now, it's not particularly significant to me that Obama lied about keeping our plans--because many of us who read up knew that we weren't going to be able to keep our plans. The people he disappointed are the people who bought the line in the first place, many of whom forgave him, almost immediately. It was no big thing, they got government healthcare out of it.

Trump has done even less to me by paying hush money to a bimbo.

.For me it's the cost of having to replace the battery at least once and possibly twice during the life of an electric or hybrid car.

We had a Ford Fusion hybrid and we liked the car alot. Once it got over 50,000 miles on it I started looking at battery replacement costs because it was only warrantied to 75,000 miles. It was going to be $9-10,000 when everything was said and done including the cost of the new battery, installation and battery disposal fees.

That was insane and we would have had to replace the battery twice if we had kept the car as long as we normally keep cars so we traded it in on a Honda CR-V.

this was 4 or 5 years ago so things may be different now, but we will not be buying any electric or hybrid cars during our lifetimes.

I do recall that a few southern cities of recent absorption changed sides after Cannae, but they all copped a plea of "we had no choice" and were allowed back in. And it seems like Carthage HQ was much more interested in Sicily and considered Hannibal's campaign to be a personal war. They certainly were not ready to support him in any meaningful way, which stands in contrast to the Roman practice of reinforcing victory and holding Hannibal's army at arm's length.

I also think that Roman patriotism helped out a lot in the crunch too. The Roman legions of the Punic Wars were made up of citizens and aspiring citizens with a vested interest in seeing Rome emerge victorious. Hannibal's army, and indeed most of their armies, were made up of mercenaries and tribal warriors who fought for short-term revenge on Rome. Rome could always raise a yearly army of soldiers dedicated to preserving the Republic, while Hannibal's army hemorraghed men at regular intervals.
