After Eluding Detection for 40 Years, The "Golden State Killer" -- the Most Prolific Unsolved Serial Killer Case in America -- Is in Custody

The suspect in custody is an ex-cop who was fired some time ago for stealing a can of dog repellent.

Which is suspicious -- cops would have access to free dog repellent when they need it. All that they could want or need.

Criminals trying to get by watch dogs would have to get it from other means.

Two years ago there was an effort to bring together the detectives from all the various jurisidictions where crimes had been committed by the serial rapist and killer. That effort at heating up a cold case seems to have worked.

He was (is) a serial rapist and serial killer, active from 1976 to 1986.

Joseph James DeAngelo has been identified as the so-called Golden State Killer believed to have committed 12 killings and 48 rapes across California from 1976 to 1986, authorities said. The 72-year-old suspect is being held without bail in Sacramento on two murder counts. "The answer has always been in Sacramento," Sacramento District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert said.

DeAngelo was arrested after police matched discarded DNA evidence from his Sacramento area home with genetic evidence from the crimes, Ventura County District Attorney Greg Totten said.

The suspect has been charged with capital murder and other counts in connection with the 1980 slayings of Lyman and Charlene Smith, Totten said at a news conference outside the Sacramento crime lab where authorities matched DeAngelo to the crimes.

...

Bell would not identify the suspect but authorities in Sacramento are expected to release more information at a news conference scheduled for noon PT (3 p.m. ET).
The suspect was also known as the "East Area Rapist" and "the Original Night Stalker."

The detectives and cops responsible for identifying the killer are giving a press conference, already in (deep) progress.

So... Can we get a similar working group together to re-open the Zodiac cold case?

How frightened is Ted Cruz right about now?

56 Back in the 1990's there was a murder at a Browns Chicken restaurant in suburban Chicago, I believe 7 people were killed just so the killers could rob the place after hours.

The killers DNA was matched from their discarded pieces of chicken dinner from the trash. Yes these vermin went into the restaurant at closing, ordered and ate dinner, then executed the staff in cold blood.

It took many years of waiting before they were able to match the DNA to the killers tho.

79 We get a fire hose of information 24/7/365.

It really is overwhelming, who can process it all?

Once upon a time, you had local newspapers, and local radio, and local TV news with a 30 min per day show of national news. Easier for the gatekeepers to control the average person's access to news.

Now it's non-stop, you can access what you want when you want it. Which really annoys the gatekeepers, hence they label everything they don't like as 'fake news'.

_______________________

You have to have something to match the crime scene DNA against.

This guy had not been arrested, so his DNA was not in the system. And until fairly recently, you had to have pretty large, and pretty clean, DNA samples to do the tests. The advances in DNA science ("touch DNA", etc.) of the last few years have made it easier to test DNA against small, less-than-pure samples (like the kind of stuff you can get out of the trash).

Indeed it does. Right after the sentence that reads, "Joseph James DeAngelo has been identified as the so-called Golden State
Killer believed to have committed 12 killings and 48 rapes across
California from 1976 to 1986, authorities said."
But a good lawyer could, and should argue that the grandstanding by the cops and press will be prejudicial to him getting a fair trial.

Only a handful of states require rape cases to be processed. The rest of the states let them sit. I was incensed when I found this out.

Someone has stepped forward to lead a change to that, the actress from L&O:SVU. She is working with some people in law enforcement or Congress to get this changed.

I tell ya people, if ya want something done, ya gotta step up and gather people and get it done. You would be surprised what you can accomplish.

103 Stolen from the interwebz:

It's been an emotional day for Patton Oswalt, who learned early this morning that a suspect had been an arrested in the so-called "Golden State Killer" case, made famous by a best-selling book by his late wife, crime writer Michelle McNamara.

The book, "I'll Be Gone in the Dark," debuted at No. 1 on the New York Times best-seller list last month.

147 DNA testing for criminals started around 1986.

People forget how relatively recent a lot of this stuff is.

Criminals in the 1970's were only worried about leaving their fingerprints, and in some cases their blood (which prosecutors sometimes had typed for sort-of matches, or at least exclusions) at their crime scenes.

276 Most serial killers do have an age range where they are active, but this may have to do with their mode of operation. Harold Shipman, perhaps the most prolific serial killer of all time, operated into his 50s, because he was an MD. Nowadays I suspect that instead of having him arrested, the NHS would give him some sort of award. They are becoming just as bad as he is.

There was a white panel van in the parking lot, the only other vehicle other than their van. They passed a lone guy going up the trail, who didn't speak when they greeted him, and averted his eyes. They also passed a young woman hiking up the trail and she smiled and spoke to them.

The next day they returned to the parking lot and the white van was gone. Turns out the weird guy kidnapped the young woman they passed, and she was later found raped and killed in the van (he was caught driving the van somehow). He had even stopped for fast food while she was apparently still alive in the van.

Too many aches and pains, too much chance of injury, time to hang up my athletic shoes and settle down!" Which is kind of sick when you apply it to raping and killing, but maybe that's how it works. Posted by: TexasDan at April 25, 2018 04:44 PM (yL25O)

310 Hard to find stats on points of origin for serial
killers. Most of the numbers I've found are number of victims of serial
killers. On a per capita basis, Alaska is in the number one slot. In
terms of raw numbers, California appears to be number one.

Posted by: Insomniac at April 25, 2018 04:31 PM (NWiLs)

All the data... yes, virtually all of it, must be taken with a grain of salt. There are serial killers about whom nobody knows anything, and there are a variety of reasons that is true. One of which is the very problem that seems to have been part of this case: multiple jurisdictions.

When a hooker is strangled and tossed to the side of a road, and it happens in close proximity, several times, everybody knows there's a serial killer on the loose.

What happens when a killer goes from state to state to state? Generally, nobody even knows they exist.

I do think there's something to the idea that people didn't care as much because his victims were almost exclusively prostitutes. They're marginal people living a very risky lifestyle and they're also easy targets for murderers. They often aren't even reported missing because they don't have a lot of contact with family or other people who would turn in a missing persons report.

The Yorkshire Ripper in England preyed on prostitutes as well and got away with it for years. Then he killed a young woman who wasn't a prostitute and I think that led to more pressure that eventually resulted in his arrest.

1976-86, then he started when he was right around 30 and stopped right
around his 40th birthday. It almost looks like some avid soccer player
who turns 40 and says to himself "Man, I love to play soccer, but I'm
getting too old for this! Too many aches and pains, too much chance of
injury, time to hang up my athletic shoes and settle down!" Which is
kind of sick when you apply it to raping and killing, but maybe that's
how it works. Not being a psycho, I wouldn't know.

Posted by: Dr. Weevil at April 25, 2018 04:41 PM (yPnLb)

Yep. That's pretty much true. The correlation on the graph would be pretty even, between age, testosterone levels, and rape/murders. There are exceptions of course, but diagnosed Antisocial Personality Disorder folks, this is fairly consistent.

430 Saw one special that made the case, with some good arguments, that the Ripper was a jewish butcher named Jacob Levy. Police reports dating from the time of the murders state that they felt that their man was coming from Butcher's row in London; and what better way to hide bloodstains and knives than on a man who was expected to wear a bloodstained leather apron on his job every day? Sleuths into this case have long noted the expert way in which many of the victims were carved up, and suspected a Doctor; but a butcher would have had just as much expertise, probably more.

Jacob Levy had a severe case of syphilis, which would have both made him angry and affected his brain, and the cessation of the attacks correspond with the time that Levy died of the disease.

439 This woman -- a DNA "chimera" with a different DNA in her ovaries than in her skin and blood -- gave birth to three kids. Genetic tests kept saying they were not her kids, and Child Protective Services even took them away.

She was like -- wait, I understand how a test can show a man's kids aren't really his kids, BUT I GAVE BIRTH TO THEM, THEY CAME OUT OF ME.

She went through several years of bizarre bureaucratic hell before some doctor somewhere heard of the case and realized this might be a "chimera" situation.

Which it was.

440 Wasn't one of them an over-the-road trucker?

Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at April 25, 2018 04:46 PM (7Cr6v)

Much more than one. It's a great job if one wants to be a serial killer. Always on the road, travelling state to state involving multiple jurisdictions and having no personal connection to the victims (other than killing them). Stranger murders are often the most difficult cases to solve.

441 The Servant Girl Annihilator.

It's probably rubbish. Likely Saucy Jacky was a head case who rapidly deteriorated to the point where he either committed suicide or ended up in Trembling Hills.

I used to read all the books and then stepped away from that case for quite a few years. I looked it up some time ago and noticed they started referring to his victims as the "Canonical Five".

What that means is that they've started adding a bunch of likely unrelated murders to his tally so people can right books about it and make money.

442 More FISA orders were denied during President Donald Trump's first year in office than in the court's history

Well on the one hand: good that they are being more picky. But on the other hand: almost certainly just being jerks because they hate Trump.

And as I posted in the last thread, I'm certain that Jack the Ripper was the pharmacist that got hanged for handing out poison as abortion pills to prostitutes in the area.

443 Any test done by humans is suspect. I would find it very difficult to find someone guilty based on the testimony of one expert.

Having been involved with 'expert testimony' on a Civil level, I can tell you that it is (in most cases) possible to find an 'expert' that will lead a jury in almost any direction.

RIGHT! I was trying to think of the name. What a name.

And yeah, all Jack the Ripper theories are probably bullshit, except the ones about poor lunatics who died in the asylum, put there for unrelated reasons.

447 'Ransacker'. I can see how that might lead to a life of crime. I know of a guy named 'Crook'. He was arrested 15 times.

448 Any test done by humans is suspect. I would find it very difficult to find someone guilty based on the testimony of one expert.

Indeed. It has to be a body of evidence, a compelling case, not just one guy. Thankfully the only one felony case I was on a jury panel for, they had a pretty complete case. Guy was molesting his daughter. It was kinda touch and go until they flew in his first wife from Virginia, and she looked like she was 14. The guy had a definite type and it was short eyes.

In the end, they didn't prove all the cases, some were just her say against him but everyone in the jury had a grim look on their face and found him guilty of all counts just to make sure he spent extra time behind bars.

The poor girl was so miserable on the stand. I wanted to kill the guy.

450 263 The abduction of the woman in the car is terrifying too (though that turns out to not have been Zodiac -- but that's another little thing that makes the movie feel real. These random events that don't fit into a conventional narrative give it a real-life feeling, because real life doesn't fit into a perfect narrative either.)

I've read some very convincing theories that Kathleen Johns was pulling an insurance scam. But yeah, even if her version of events was truthful and she wasn't just "blaming the Zodiac" for burning her car, it wasn't the Zodiac.

Chimeras - absorbed twin - have to be identical, right? Can't happen with fraternal in a separate sack?

So, identical twins' DNA is different enough to be detected? (I should know this. But our twins were fraternal. )

Yup. One of my classes (creative writing or something) was in the room where they put together the yearbooks. It had a bunch of old ones laying around. Of course we looked for Ted. All the pictures of him had been defaced.

Of course, sadly, Ted is pretty much the most famous person to ever come out of Wilson.
