Rand Paul Votes in Favor of Pompeo, Advancing His Nomination Out of Committee and to the Floor; Joe Manchin Says He'll Vote For Him for SecState

I missed this yesterday:

Manchin's claim of intent is mentioned in the second item at PJ Media's Morning Briefing-- with Paul switching his vote from "no" to "yes," Pompeo will be voted forward out of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. That would probably be enough to secure his confirmation as Secretary of State, but, for added cushion, Joe Manchin, who is up for re-election and has to put on his Conservative Halloween Costume for a little while, says he'll vote for him too.

Regarding that "present" vote: It's actually kind of nice.

Why did Rand Paul change his vote? Well, he says it's because Pompeo told him he's changed his mind about Iraq and Afganhistan to agree with Trump (and, therefore, Rand Paul).

Was this just a faked-up agreement to let Paul vote for Pompeo without seeming like he was just giving up? By that I mean -- was this an arranged exit to permit Paul to gracefully step down from his position?

Maybe. But also, on the other hand...

A fellow commentator said privately that this might have been of a fake in the other direction -- it allows one influential pro-Iraq-War voice to change his opinion, apparently under duress and only in order to advance to becoming Secretary of State.

But who knows -- maybe Pompeo also needed an excuse, an "out," to declare the Iraq War was a bad decision in hindsight. Maybe this also served as a graceful exit from the pro-Iraq-War position for Pompeo, and arranged step-down for him as well.

Yes. Paul's votes approving both Kerry and Hillary for SoS were being discussed. Taking the position that those two were ok, but Pompeo was a bridge too far would be difficult to defend. He needed a way to save face.

36 He'll be confirmed, remember Democrats also engage in Kabuki politics too, trying to manipulate their voters and keep the donors emptying wallets.

I'll never, ever decide that invading Iraq was the wrong move, but it clearly was handled poorly, particularly the rebuilding. They should have hit it, flattened all opposition, wiped out the bad guys, and left. Said "don't make us come back" because the United States does not have the will to properly see through a rebuilding and calming process and the left is too treasonous to work with such a program.

=============

Blue Wave thoughts:

It's been predicted since the inauguration as an assumed fact.

Trump polled poorly throughout the 2016 campaign and won anyway.

National elections are largely determined based on 3 factors: presidential approval, the economy, and war.

The economy is doing well. POTUS has decent approval, largely in line with what he had prior to the election in 2016. War is not a major factor right now, just potential threats like North Korea.

The generic congressional ballot doesn't show a large lead by Democrats.

Polling firms are known to make their polls more accurate the closer they get to elections. They get judged based on final polls, not the ones they did six months before.

The assumption of a blue wave seems just so off to me. The only thing that gives me pause is the special election results for the past 6-9 months, but as we all know, special elections are typically non-predictive.

Also, midterms have largely produced more Republican friendly electorates than presidential years.

None of this, absolutely none of it, naturally leads to the assumption that Democrats will win big.

Not a prediction, but I would not be surprised by Republicans losing a net of 5-10 house seats and gaining a net of 5-7 senate seats. And no one will have seen it coming. Again.

Continuous, as in "not one week off."

The Air Defense Artillery in the US Army was in Kuwait and Saudi since Gulf War One until Saddam fell.

Continuous not one week off....

there are people in the ADA who spent LITERALLY 50% of their career in Durka Durka and did 24 years.

I think the redistricting in PA gave Dems a handful of seats in a lock, plus all the retirements from scared Republicans make several more contests winnable. Then there's all the special elections show crazy high Dem turnout and tepid Republican turnout.

I hope I'm wrong, just the way I'm seeing it. But Trump's numbers are good and the economy is doing well, so it's really Congressional Republicans own fault if they screw up the midterms.

The lesson for me is that total war is the answer. Either fight to win and go home or don't bother fighting. Half measures just prolong the cost and the suffering. Fuck me. Despite the fact that everyone considered him to be uniquely terrible as a candidate (mere weeks after the Access Hollywood tape), he still performed as expected.

Personality matters less than many people think the bigger the race. The vast majority of base voters end up coming home anyway, and the squishy middle tend to vote for issues like the economy and war.

From pulpits across the land, your corruption has been sanctified. Go forth and behave despicably. And fear not the wrath of those you harm. In fact, accuse them of your crimes. Assign to them your slimy motives. And if all else fails, have your lawyers destroy them. Oh yes, dirtbags, it's a new world. It's your world. Squat down and defecate on it."

Headed to Australia, steak & lobster, Cap'n on the 1MC - we're headed to Somalia.
Headed to Ankara, steak & lobster, Cap'n on the 1MC - we're headed to Somalia.
Headed to Hong Kong, steak & lobster, Cap'n on the 1MC - we're headed to the gulf.
lather, rinse, repeat.

took YEARS to get over that...

Sure, I think Trump actually did and tries to do generic Republican stuff. The problem is that too many Republicans quit doing Republican stuff. Or delay it as to essentially be abandoning it until the next campaign. Or the next one after that. Most definitely the one after that.

With the way that the GOPe has been shitting all over Trump, I'm thinking that a lot of them really don't want him campaigning for them at all. Which just gives them the excuse to blame him if they lose control of Congress.

Apparently these are a 'trademark' for Lorre, and are displayed at the end of episodes of his productions (Big Bang, Dharma Greg, Grace Under Fire, and Cybill, among others).

My understanding is that they are shown for only a few seconds, so either you record and pause, or go to his website to read them. CBS has censored some of them, and the website shows both censored and uncensored versions.

Other than the above, present respondent knows nothing more.

267 Any grunt, after looking at topographic map will tell you, you will never finish Afghanistan. Never.

My choice of words was poor. From my understanding we let Osama bin Laden escape into Pakistan, that one mullah escape on a motorbike, and we had the chance to vaporize 150 of them while they attended a funeral. Trying to micromanage a war via Rules of Engagement was a mistake. If you're unwilling to kill at every opportunity because of collateral damage, you'll never achieve your objectives, which is kill all the bad guys.

276 We should have invaded Denmark at the same time we went into Afghanistan.

See, if you want to turn Afghanistan into Denmark, you need a whole bunch of Danes to put there.
Where else are you gonna find them but in Denmark?

Of course, there's still the problem of the Afghans.
You need to remove them without getting all genocidal.

Fortunately, there is now an empty country in Denmark.
You can put them there.
And no one can criticize you because all of the Righteous Ones agree that people from sh*tholes should go to Denmark or such.

Yes, I messed with the #1 place honor to see how upset people would get about it...as it is held so sacred. Then I get the sarcastic "listen sweetheart". But I had to leave. One poster of true blue Horde material corrected him to Ms. Sweetheart, for proper 'ette protocol.

Then another Eeyore member got pissy and said that meant I was a slut for hire. I'm paraphrasing all this. Which is strange, bcz I called Eeyore Mr., earlier today. So I guess he just got his panties in a twist. Or, by calling him Mr., he sees himself as a Paolo for hire.

Unfortunately, I had left during all this folderol and was not able to join in the fun. But in a day full of drudgery and deadlines, I am thankful for a little levity. And get that Klingon Blood wine ready baby!

286 Frankly, the Iraq War WAS a bad idea in hindsight.

That's not to say the rationale for the war was wrong, but in hindsight, the execution was flawed, and we may not have been able to execute it the way we may have needed to. All the shit that came from that war has not remotely been worth it. Iraq is still a shithole. And we allowed the region to become a mess and allowed Iran to be more of a problem than they were before.

Rationale was solid, outcome was not worth it, either blood, treasure, or bad PR.
