The Saturday Night Joke

The Origin of the White Wedding Dress

A son asked his mother the following question:

' Mom, why are wedding dresses white? ' The mother looks at her son and replies:

' Son, this shows your friends and relatives that your bride is pure.'

The son thanks his Mom and goes off to double-check this with his father.

' Dad why are wedding dresses white? '
The father looks at his son in surprise and says:

'Son, all household appliances come in white.'

(He'll be out of intensive care shortly)

Refueling while discussing coffee, AWESOME! h/t yankeefifth

One of the things the big jet and cargo plane flyers have on the fighter guys is the ability to get up and walk around, make good snacks, and even take along a Keurig for the ride. This comes up often, including in this video. Also of particular note is that this sortie is the Strike Eagle pilot's final one in the F-15E. Soon he will be flying the same aircraft he is sipping gas from—the KC-10. He even gives thanks for the gas with a nice break and flare release as he drops off the boom.

Good-bye cars, Hello more trucks and crossovers.

On Wednesday, Ford dropped a bombshell during its Q1 earnings call: it's going to stop selling almost all its cars in the US. The Mustang will remain on sale, as will the Focus Active, a model that won't debut until next year. But kiss goodbye to the Fiesta, Focus, Fusion, Taurus, and C-MAX. Instead, the company will focus almost exclusively on SUVs, crossovers, and trucks in the US domestic market.

Ford President and CEO Jim Hackett cited the declining popularity of the car—which the company pioneered more than a century ago—as the reason for the decision. "We are committed to taking the appropriate actions to drive profitable growth and maximize the returns of our business over the long term. Where we can raise the returns of underperforming parts of our business by making them more fit, we will. If appropriate returns are not on the horizon, we will shift that capital to where we can play and win," he said.

Thought you knew everything about sex? 12 sex facts that you may not have known.

A Billion Wicked Thoughts: What the Internet Tells Us About Sexual Relationships is an extraordinary book. It’s a scientific study of sex that focuses heavily on what the neuroscientists who wrote the book learned from studying people’s preferences for pornography,

Ogas and Gaddam analyzed a billion web searches, a million Web sites, a million erotic videos, a million erotic stories, millions of personal ads, and tens of thousands of digitized romance novels. Their groundbreaking findings will profoundly alter the way you think about the sexual relationships of women and men.
The book was actually very educational and had some quite surprising findings in it. Twelve of the more interesting factoids from the book are included here. Enjoy!

It's official Uranus smells like farts.

Poor Uranus: After years of being the butt of many schoolyard jokes, the planet's odor lives up to the unfortunate name. According to a new study by researchers at the University of Oxford and other institutions, published in the journal Nature Astronomy, the upper layer of Uranus's atmosphere consists largely of hydrogen sulfide—the same compound that gives farts their putrid stench.

Scientists have long suspected that the clouds floating over Uranus contained hydrogen sulfide, but the compound's presence wasn't confirmed until recently. Certain gases absorb infrared light from the Sun. By analyzing the infrared light patterns in the images they captured using the Gemini North telescope in Hawaii, astronomers were able to get a clearer picture of Uranus's atmospheric composition.

Lots of guts. Big Balls. No brains. Marco Siffredi, snowboarder of Mt. Everest.

Since British explorer George Mallory attempted to climb Mount Everest for the first time in 1924 and tragically perished on its slopes, over 4,000 people have tried to follow in his footsteps. Most have been successful, but hundreds of them have followed in his ill-fated footsteps, succumbing to the incredibly harsh conditions that exist on the world’s tallest mountain.

But while approximately 290 people have died either ascending or descending Mount Everest, only one has died while descending the slopes on a snowboard.

Over priced sammich shop with tatted sammich artists to close. 500 Subways to close.

With about 43,700 stores, Subway is, unbeknownst to most, secretly the world’s largest restaurant chain. But it might not keep that edge much longer: The company has just announced plans to close 500 more of its U.S. stores this year. That follows last year’s … economizing, where it shut down 909 locations, and 2016’s streamlining, let’s call it this time, where it took 359 stores out of commission.

Subway has been languishing for years, in other words — a red-alert situation its executives have tried to correct for some time, especially after the Jared Fogle incident and fake-chicken scandal. Late last year, the chain’s billionaire co-founder Peter Buck even suggested developing an all-new business strategy: Either buying a rival sandwich chain, or quietly creating “sub-brands” that would trick customers into eating Subway without realizing it.

DECATUR — Four inmates in the Macon County Jail were hospitalized after taking the illegal drugs another inmate smuggled inside concealed within his rectum, a sworn affidavit said.

Corrections Sgt. Roger Pope said in the affidavit that an investigation revealed the inmate, Romell D. Hill, 34, was selling a variety of drugs, including meth and heroin, “for commissary items and potentially other funds” to raise his own bail money. Hill was so intoxicated on drugs himself, Pope said, that he was given shots of the overdose treatment Narcan to revive him.

Speaking of subs. I've had the idea to create a book or website about obscure Americans who never got the credit they deserved. Charles Hamilton Houston, George Mitchell, etc.

One is John Holland, father of the first practical submarines. Before he emigrated from Ireland, one of his first efforts was to build a submersible for the Fenians (proto IRA) to blow up a ship in the Thames. He grew up in County Clare as a Gaelic speaker and was an Irish Christian Brother before he left the order. His work got commercialized as the Electric Boat Company, which still makes US Navy subs.

Forget the names, but during WWII the relentless quest for more production capacity led to a shipyard on the Great Lakes building a dozen US subs. They were put on shallow-draft barge-like structures and floated down the Mississippi - along the way, joining the LSTs (Landing Ship/Tank) that were built at the "prairie shipyard" further down the river. US WWII industrial performance just gets more amazing, the more one learns about it.

also, you never know how many girls that were willing to go to a date or back to the apartment would have agreed to the bed part after the date or getting to the apartment.

208 The huge appeal of "diners" (places that had exposed cooking areas where customers could watch the food being prepared) was based on a nationwide presumption in the Food and Drug era that you really couldn't trust restaurants.

For a while, McD's was just another diner, with a niche approach. Now, you don't really see them cooking, you know they make some things in advance, and there's a nationwide presumption that you can't trust restaurants.

That's what made Subway. It was price-competitive with McD's, looked fresher, and you watched them make it. Also, they had "Doctors" right there in their corpname. And it was stupid easy to get the franchises, which allows for business mistakes of a kind we just couldn't imagine decades ago. Now, losing a few hundred is a market-marker. God we are dumb.

There certainly are better sandwich shops. They are significantly more expensive. Subway isn't as cheap as they used to be, but watch for the specials. Penn Station and Firehouse can't touch them. And they don't try.

I've been trying for years to find easy, to-go, food you can eat while driving that isn't mostly bread. Shockingly, thin tortillas are high-carb.

Normal FontLarge Font
SEOUL, April 29 (Yonhap) -- South Korean presidential office Cheong Wa Dae said Sunday that North Korea has offered to close down its nuclear test site in Punggye-ri in May.

During a live broadcast delivered by President Moon Jae-in's chief press secretary Yoon Young-chan, he said Moon and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un also agreed to make public when North Korea dismantles the northern test site.

Kim said he would invite security experts and journalists to the North.

"Some say that we are terminating facilities that are not functioning, but you will see that they are in good condition," Yoon quoted Kim as saying.

292 The definitions for cars and trucks are not the same for fuel economy and emission standards. For example, a Chrysler PT Cruiser is defined as a car for emissions purposes and a truck for fuel economy purposes. Under the current light truck fuel economy rules, the PT Cruiser will have a higher fuel economy target (28.05 mpg beginning in 2011) than it would if it were classified as a passenger car. CAFE standards signaled the end of the traditional long station wagon, but Chrysler CEO Lee Iacocca developed the idea of marketing the minivan as a station wagon alternative, while certifying it in the separate truck category to allow compliance with less-strict emissions standards. Eventually, this same idea led to the promotion of the SUV. This trend has reversed itself since the crossover has eroded SUV sales during the mid-2000s, SUVs must conform with emission standards and a crossover is defined as a car for fuel economy purposes.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corporate_average_
fuel_economy

tl;dr: If you are a car manufacturer selling both cars and trucks, the cars are required by law to have a higher mpg rating.

Look at the chart on that page, going out to 2025. It just keeps on getting worse. More companies are going to be looking for a way to get around those impossible numbers. Ford is just the start.

Posted by: qdpsteve at April 28, 2018 10:56 PM (eMKNe)

With any frozen pizza, you are just really buying the frozen crust to add your own toppings. We generally wait until Red Baron is on sale and then buy a mix of cheese only and pepperoni pizzas to use in a variety of recipes.

However, Papa Murphy's take and bake thin crust works pretty well too, and requires less doctoring to produce a fully satisfying pizza.

For a meat pizza, we like pepperoni, sausage, onion, extra mozzarella and mushrooms. Or the always popular triple pepperoni.

For another option, we add red onion, artichoke hearts, black olives, mozzarella and feta cheese (with a generous dash of oregano).

Hmm. The 'slicing pies' thing might actually apply here.

So, picture the view into an adjacent space as a wedge. As you move laterally (well back from the doorway), the wedge's dimensions change as the angle changes. Something like that. You can sidestep and sweep an area while in cover using the corner as the fulcrum.

Maybe there's a diagram online or something. It looks like they call it ATFP now.

As to positions, it was just Weaver IIRC. Kind of choked up a little with elbows bent, but you don't present your hand through a doorway anyhow until you've swept the area and when you move, you kind of rush it so there's no chance for someone to grab your arm before you're on top of them. And only the point man actually has a two-handed grip, since everyone in the stack behind you has one hand on the shoulder of the person ahead of him and is watching their own sectors. So... maybe not all of this is directly relevant to one or two people sweeping an area.

Posted by: Mega at April 28, 2018 11:52 PM (rv0Fo)

413 Hmm.

An
Elegy

For the U.S.N. Dirigible, Macon

The noon is beautiful:
the perfect wheel

Now glides on perfect surface with a
sound

Earth has not heard before. The
polished ground

Trembles and whispers under rushing
steel.

The polished ground, and prehistoric air!

Metal now plummets upward, and there
sways,

A loosened pendulum for summer days,

Fixing the eyeball in a limpid stare.

There was one symbol in especial, one

Great form of thoughtless beauty that
arose

Above the mountains, to foretell the
close

Of this deception, at meridian.

Steel-gray the shadow, than a storm
more vast!

Its crowding engines, rapid,
disciplined,

Shook the great valley like a rising
wind.

This image now is conjured from the
past.

Wind in the wind! O form more light
than cloud!

Storm amid storms! And by the storm
dispersed!

The brain-drawn metal rose until
accursed

By its extension, and the sky was
loud!

Who will believe this thing, in time
to come?

I was a witness. I beheld the age

That seized upon a planet's heritage

Of steel and oil, the mind's
viaticum:

Crowded the world with strong
ingenious things

Used the provision it could not
replace

To leave but Cretan myths, a sandy
trace

Through the last stone age, for the
pastoral kings.

First, congrats on the new job. A little anxiety is normal. I completely relate to imposter syndrome. Just give yourself the chance to demonstrate to them - and to yourself - that you genuinely have what it takes. I've found that convincing oneself, when you're a self-critical type of person, is much more difficult.

It's one of those things that sounds like new-agey BS but accurately describes exactly what some people experience and they didn't talk themselves into a diagnosis because they didn't know it existed until they mention it to someone and that someone nods and says "yeah, impostor syndrome".

Basically it feels like you have to run uphill or else everyone will realize that you're just completely incompetent and don't deserve to be in a position because you can't do it properly and must have conned them into hiring you.

Posted by: yankeefifth at April 29, 2018 12:30 AM (MTjB1)

490 For today's excitement at Peon manor, I had me a small grass fire. I was cutting up some steel scrap I had picked form the dump, some old corral gates made of 1X1 square steel tubing. Very handy stock to have around, and these pieces were nine feet plus in length. Grinding off some welds with the angle grinder. I had finished one piece, and toted it out behind the garage and placed it on my metal rack. Came back, and there were smoke and flames rising from tall grass at the base of my shop building. I completely overlooked several pails of water within easy reach, and ran into the garage and snagged a one-pound dry chemical fire extinguisher. Two quick shots from that, and the fire was out, and now I have a discharged fire extinguisher. But I have others. Then i went and charged up one of my pressurized-water extinguishers, which I should have done before using the grinder. Needless to say, despite doing a lot more grinding, I had no other fires start.

496 On those heartwarming story pics, the one with the guy having just given away two tickets to a football match to kids, I've done that, too. Back when I had NYRangers season tickets, there were quite a few times I could not go to the game and did not find a friend who wanted the tickets. Rather than deal with the scalpers and sell them the tickets at a heavily reduced price from face value, I'd look for a young kid trying to buy tickets from the scalpers. I'd ask the kid if he was looking for a ticket. If he said yes, I'd give them to him. Their eyes always got big and I pissed off a lot of scalpers doing that (loss of a 'customer'). I wasn't going to the game, they were going to waste anyway, so why not give them to a kid?

497 Late to thread.

The Marshall Tucker Band is one of my all time favorites. Great band, underrated. Doesn't get the love some of its contemporaries do.

Sister and I finally celebrated our respective birthdays yesterday. We went to our favorite restaurant in Alexandria, VA and ate well. The slightly awkward thing was over at the next table there was a young couple on a date. Man bun guy I didn't really notice but his young date looked like Alexandra Daddario. I mean EXACTLY like her. This girl was a little shorter and probably college age but she was distractingly pretty. Really distracting. When we left, my sister said "that girl must have been pretty, you kept looking over" and laughed. This young gal was VERY distracting.

When we pulled into the truck stop in Tucson, and were fueling up, the lead driver asked if I would like to go to the concert the next night and of course I said yes. Told me to go to the ticket office the next night and there would be tickets for me and my co-driver. Cool. So the next night we go and I'm figuring front row tickets or something like that. We get to the ticket office, they ask for my driver's license and then hand us two back stage passes. Thrilled we was. Sad part was that Toy and Tommy Caldwell were both kind of assholes. Yup. 12 crazy facts that are neither facts nor crazy, except for 2 of them.

1) more women than men have procreated throughout history. Yes, that's what happens when, for 200K years, people consider one gender "warriors" and the other "loot".

2) Gay men are longer. Except that the numbers they have match up with an old Playboy mag write-in survey, and not with any survey directed by actual medical folks...which came up just an inch short, so to speak. So men lie about how big they are, and men who are trying to impress other men lie more. Wow!

3) Strippers make more when fertile. I knew that, and I've never been, nor known, a stripper. Unless it was in a past life.

4) 2.5 million porn sites in the filtering software. Only? My guess would have missed by an order of magnitude. Or two.

5) Men prefer younger women. No kidding. Also, 5% of people are drooling idiots. Who has to search for "vagina" on pornhub?

6) Most people have no imagination. Duh.

7) 3x as many searches for big gals as small ones. Duh. The small ones are the default in porn. You don't have to search for them. Kinda like "vaginas".

Men like boobehs. Knock me over with a feather.

9) It's easier to proposition men and not get slapped. Stunning.

10) Women like their men manly and rich. Surprise!

11) Some people need a shrunken head to get laid. OK, that's odd.

12) Women still like their men rich. I've read this somewhere before, quite recently...

Posted by: yankeefifth at April 28, 2018 11:19 PM (MTjB1)

I have some experience in these areas, but I'm most certainly, *not* a Trainer in this field.

That said, I have a valid contact to connect you with some of the very best in the training arena.

As an aside, the terms you're looking for are:

* CQB which stands for Close Quarters ComBat. Not alphabetically correct, but remember that CQB term. It's searchable, too.

and

*Shoot House* That's the training structure you're describing in the training arena.

You really dive into the CQB stuff, and you're going to find that a LOT of is is "blue gun" (plastic substitute for real gun) stuff, with VERY physical combative stuff dealing with weapons retention and/or successfully deploying and engaging with YOUR sidearm, while in the midst of grappling with an opponent with but one goal in mind.

To kill you before you kill him.

The training is. Not. Inexpensive.

But very valuable, indeed.

558 Ford just quit making the Crown Vic in 2011, at a time when what, maybe ~80% of cop cars were Vics.

It's still a small market. I guess the amount of extra you make from the gov't wasting tax dollars doesn't make up for running a line that makes cars that people think are only for cops, taxi companies, or 87-year-olds. Other car companies took over, but by selling cars with a bigger additional market. Chargers are still cool.

It doesn't match the modern everything-is-disposable market. Police departments liked the old body-on-frame construction models because they were easy to repair. Unibody disposables make Ford more money than cars that can be kept on the road after multiple collisions.

The person she is concerned about is litigious. Files lawsuits. If that happens, lawyers start disposing people. And, they will ask if you have ever discussed the matter with anyone, and they will ask about online. You then have a choice: lie and hope they never tie you to your online id, or admit it, at which point they will dig up everything you ever said with that id.

Someone who's determined enough could figure it out. It could also be required to be revealed as part of discovery.

588 DNA blunder creates phantom serial killer
Police admit they wasted 15 years hunting for the 'Woman Without a Face'

She was a mysterious serial killer known as the "The Woman Without a Face" and detectives across Europe spent more than 15 years doing their utmost to bring her to justice for at least six brutal murders and a string of break-ins. Yesterday, however, they were forced to admit that she probably didn't exist.

The only clues that "The Woman Without a Face" left behind at 40 different crime scenes were DNA traces. These were collected on cotton swabs, supplied to the police in a number of European countries. Now police investigators have established that in all probability the DNA had not been left by their quarry but by a woman working for the German medical company supplying the swabs, who had inadvertently contaminated them.

Not sure how some of these would even get laughs.

So, no more Ford cars?

Did they finally price themselves out of the market with the union's outrageous wage demand and the CEO's multi-bazillion-dollar compensation? Good.

I wonder how many people are like me and have vowed never to buy another union-made vehicle?

Well, it is kind of a catch 22. You either buy a car made by a union shop or one who took a bailout- or both.

By the same token, they are supposed to still be producing the Mustang and some other vehicle.

Ya know what's weird, that's exactly what happened. I had not finished typing, had not hit post, and suddenly I got kicked off the thread. It was the weirdest thing. And I was kinda glad, bcz it was horrible.

615 I was at White Castle on the Vegas Strip Wednesday night and ordered the impossible burger.

I heard it was good and my diet is supposed to be meatless anyway for health reasons.

The nice counter-lady told me it would take an additional 7 minutes to prepare, so I considered briefly and decided just to have regular sliders.

Time is of the essence and life is short, amirite?

Yes, they were awesome.

618 I wonder how many people are like me and have vowed never to buy another union-made vehicle?

I'm not their target market, since I don't trade them in every 2 or 3 years, but my lifetime purchases have gone Ford-GM-GM-GM-Honda-Toyota. The last GM was a "2000" model, so I must have bought it in '99.

And I'm pretty sure the Honda was more "American-made" than all of the prior ones.

Speculation is that's behind it, sedan sales are perpetually falling and Ford didn't want to fight to retain a part of a shrinking pie. Fords will now be the Mustang, the line of pickups, and SUV's. That'll be about it.

It's still a small market. I guess the amount of extra you make from
the gov't wasting tax dollars doesn't make up for running a line that
makes cars that people think are only for cops, taxi companies, or
87-year-olds.

There are, at the last count I heard, 600k LEOs in the US. That calls for a whole lotta cop cars even if most used by twosomes, and even allowing for replacement every 3 years or so.

For example, total sales from 2011 thru 2016 Global combined Volt/Ampera family sales totaled about 134,500 units by the end of December 2016. IN CV's last year, it sold nearly 50K copies.

Under the Mercury Grand Marquis label, (which was discontinued at the same time as the Vic) sales from 2003 thru 2011 were nearly a half million cars.
