Them pelts got dry-cleanin' numbers on them. You remember your number and
always wear the ones that has your number. Any man forgets his number
spends a night in the box.

There's no playing beaver-grab
or beaver punning in the building. You got a grudge against another man for beatin' you to a beaver film name, you
fight him Saturday afternoon. Any man playing beaver-grab or beaver punning in
the building spends a night in the box.

First bell's at five minutes of
eight when you will get in your den. Last bell is at eight. Any man not
in his den at eight spends the night in the box.

There is no smoking
in the prone position in your den. To smoke you must have both legs out the
side of your den. Any man caught smoking in the prone position in his den... spends a night in the box.

No one'll sit in their dens makin'
dirty beaver puns. Any man makin' dirty beaver puns sitting in their dens spends a
night in the box.

Any man don't bring back his empty poplar bottle spends a
night in the box.
Any man loud talking beaver film puns spends a night in the box.

You
got questions, you come to me. I'm Carr, the floor beaver walker. I'm
responsible for order in here. Any man don't keep order spends a night in the box.

...by Caleb Beers, not left-wing

Well, the first thing I did when I woke up today was kiss my Hitler plushie and burn some incense in front of my portraits of Mussolini and Augusto Pinochet. Then I went ahead and made some chicken deep-fried in the tears of oppressed gay people, which I had for breakfast, and hopped on the bus to get to the Patriarchy Meeting, where we sat around a long table shaped like a phallus (of course) and swapped racist jokes while eating steak made exclusively from endangered species.

The topic of the meeting was, pursuant to the Pinochet portrait, a charitable venture whereby the Patriarchy funds free helicopter rides for Communists. Presently, we're trying to put together the funds to extend this-- ahem-- *privilege* to registered Democrats.

-----------------------

Crickets.

Apparently it's something they eat in Japan. Funny thing, though...

I was taking a Japanese class, and one of the students brought them in. They got passed around, and everyone who wanted to try them did. Our teacher was a Japanese native, and after they'd gone around the room, she suggested sharing them with the class next door, taught by another Japanese native-speaker. And so they got passed around the class next door. Except that unlike in our class, when it was the turn if the native-speaker instructor, she got squeamish and couldn't eat one.

My verdict - no real flavor (which is why they were coated in sauce), but the texture was horrible.

My bet is that in this lawfare war, Trump is now like Zhukov at the gates of Moscow gunning the engines of 1,000 T-34s to start the counter-attack.

The Other Side has a lot of legal exposure. Many are indictable based on what's already in the public domain.

Known Unknowns:

What's on the Weiner laptop, and who has access to it. McCabe and Comey can swing on this.
Will Hillary's missing 33,000 e-mails surface.

Cow's tongue was gross. So are English peas as well as liver.

Both cow tongue and liver are good, if not overcooked and served with sauteed onion.

Anybody interested in that generator doodad that hooks onto your meter, it's GenerLink. HD sells them.

30A (240) is $650 plus whatever installation is. A 7.5 kW genset would work there.

Posted by: blaster at April 22, 2018 09:54 PM (jHrzU)

That's a nifty gadget. It's a transfer switch that plugs into the meter socket, and then the meter plugs into it. Has to be installed by utility company personnel, since there are utility company seals on the meter retainer bands. But probably a lot less expensive than having an electrician install a regular box-mounted transfer switch.

424 I was going to post this last night, but y'all were a little preoccupied.

2018 Jeep Compass review.

I've been given one of these over the weekend as loaner while my primary vehicle has some work done to satisfy a recall. Since I don't get to drive other vehicles much I'd thought I would share my thoughts on this one with teh Horde, whether you want them or not.

Interior is adequate, at best. Seats are where they should be, and nothing has burst into flames unexpectedly. Radio doesn't totally suck, but I hate the "feature" that adjusts the volume as your speed changes. Found and turned that off as fast as I could.

Brakes are grabby at low speed. Feels like they were engineered to prevent a lawsuit for not stopping fast enough in low speed collision situations.

Performance is almost nonexistent. While the engine does sound like a swarm of angry bees when you step on the accelerator, these seem to be very sluggish bees. Almost as if you tipped a beehive over in sub-zero temps. You can hear that they're pissed, but they're not actually going to do anything.

Steering seems OK, it goes where you point it.

I do like the system that alerts you when there is something in your blind spot. It's one of the few useful things about this assemblage of bolts and plastic.

Overall I wouldn't recommend buying the Jeep Compass, unless you were a movie company that needed a vehicle to be crushed, shredded, or blown up.

If I had a coal-fired locomotive, I'd definitely fire it up for Earf Day. To pull an armored train, from which my friends could shoot at tasty animals. I think that would be the complete package.

Speaking of coal, read that Liberty ships were oil-fired instead of coal so that they could be refueled under way (at sea). Interesting. But same source said that there was no running water or electricity for the crew. ???? Can't believe there were no sinks or showers anywhere on the ship, or electricity for lights. I get that they were designed to be cheap/quick to build, but. Gonna have to look into that a bit more.

444 CaliGirl, I assume that even your situation would not be considered good cause to get a carry permit, from what I assume is a useless/dumbass SB Cty sheriff's dept.? Challenger to sheriff down here is running on a shall-issue platform, may be only case where this is happening in CA. Have no idea how the generally lazy and brain-dead electorate will go on the sheriff's race, but at least it's somewhat interesting.

Not sure whether the challenger has taken a position on "sanctuary" lawlessness - OC sheriff certainly gave him the opening, and should have given him the political inspiration. Especially in a border county.

445 someone ran a story on drudge about how one kangaroo was killed and another severely wounded at a zoo in china where the visitors, also known as savages, were throwing bricks at the kangaroos to make them hop.

suppose that is not as bad as releasing live cattle into the lion and tiger pits to let the visitors watch them be eaten.

That doesn't sound right at all. They were powered by a steam engine, so they would have had evaporators. They had radios and engineering lighting and navigation lighting etc. etc. The hotel loads for power and water for a crew are nothing compared to the engineering loads.

What source is that from?

451 427. I did not know that Hammer, but it is a good thing. Horses were getting dumped when slaughter was illegal or transported clear to Canada or Mexico to become food. I know a lot of horse people whine that slaughter is awful - well its not mandatory. The worst fate an equine faces is being an old or lame working horse with a poor owner in a muslim country where they can't get some $ selling for food to replace it.

I liked the Tempest reference, 'all the devils are here' - very Forbidden Planet. Also the westernisation of Paint It Black during that scene where the big bad is supposed to be delivering that big bad speech but is so rudely interrupted.

529 266 -- Scrapple is like sausage: Don't ask what's in it. I haven't had decent scrapple since I moved to this benighted state. My grandfather used to buy it directly from the Amish at Reading Station.

I looked at the description of surstromming, and it seems to be half done liquamen, the Romans's ketchup. No thanks. And I looked at a picture of a durian, and I think one of the big Oriental grocery stores here in Omaha carries them. I've always wondered what they were, but they were too expensive to try. After reading all the comments about it, I will never, ever buy one.

The worst thing I've ever eaten? There are several entries in that race. One thing I never, ever tried is souse. My father would slap a thick slice on a piece of bread, pour some vinegar on it, top it off with another slice of bread and scarf it down like it was the nectar of the gods. And the Czech restaurant my book store used to be located next to served liver dumpling soup. Never in a million years.

566 Blood sausage. That was truly disgusting. The casings would pop open and sickly grey balls of cooked blood would roll around the skillet.

You realize, guys, that these truly disgusting things we are taking about are essentially peasant food. In the fall, when you killed every animal you were unable to winter over, you had to find ways to preserve the meat over the winter until food became available in the spring. And very few peasants or serfs were well enough off to throw any part of a slaughtered animal away. I've always heard that when a peasant slaughtered a pig, the family used every bit of it except the squeal. An older friend of mine and his late wife were brought up on Iowa farms. When she was a little girl, Enid' s (the wfe) job was to stand by the basin that caught the slaughtered pig's blood and stir it so it didn't get thick and clotted before being made into blood sausage.

I don't make a blood sausage. But, I'll save the blood and other juices from whatever meat I'm cooking, and then, the magic happens.

It so happens that I make some of the best gravy of ANY thing that was in my skillet, ever.

Ever had a fish gravy over wild rice?

Served with the salmon it's derived from. Sublime.

I'll admit a cheat on that one. A bit of white wine in the mix, but only after the fish was sautéed in butter n' beer.

Generally, I use a gravy as a "dip", rather than a covering sauce. That way, you can enjoy the meat as it emerges from the pan, or enhanced.

Your choice, and neither is incorrect.

I have a copy of the original "Joy of Cooking" and there are recipes in it for brains, hearts and kidneys as well as for raccoon and squirrel and pig's feet. (There's even a drawing showing how to skin a squirrel by stepping on its' tail and pulling the hide off.) It was published during the Depression and I would guess many people were not in a position to turn their noses up at organ or rodent meat.

It's interesting to me that fancy London restaurants now have squirrel on the menu. Our gray North American squirrels are an invasive species over there and the fear is that they are causing the beloved native red squirrels (they are much cuter than the grays) to go extinct, since the grays are taking over and pushing the reds out of their natural habitat. Apparently they are a bit pickier about where they live and what they eat than gray squirrels. So the British government is actually urging people to trap, kill and eat the grays.

My Mom was born in 1922 (and died a few years ago) and was raised on a hardscrabble farm in hillbilly country. Growing up, we hardly ever had chicken, although my Mom could fry up some mean chicken, she just never made it often, blaming 'the mess' it made to make.

When she was a little girl, she had a pet chicken. One day my Grandma handed her the axe and said they needed dinner. Buh-bye pet chicken. When she told me that story as I got into my teenaged years, not having chicken dinners at home made some sense. It also explained why my Mom could not emotionally connect with the dog I was given for my 10th birthday.

Farm people have a practical outlook when it comes to most animals. Cats are not pets, but feral micers. Horses are, well, workhorses. The only true pet any farmer in my family had was a dog, and the dog wasn't really a pet so much as a working partner/protector.

640 There are a lot of recipes for tomato soup from scratch online. If using fresh, not canned, scald them. Makes it easier to peel the tomatoes. The skins won't cook down. When I make it, the onions and other ingredients get cooked until soft which doesn't take long, maybe 10 minutes. I use an immersion blender to puree it all. Let it simmer for 30 minutes.

It all depends on what is going on in your knee. A lady I worked with had her insurance authorize two injections and she only needed one because it worked so well for her.

660 Socialism is what happens when hubris meets dogma.

The people in charge believe themselves smarter than everyone else in the world, and everyone that came before them. They believe they'll be the ones to make it work, and then history won't matter anymore, because it'll be Year Zero with the start of their perfect society as the turning point, and people will be singing their praises for all time, etc.

They simply can't fathom the idea that they (in their perfection), or their dogma (perfect, since it's theirs) could possibly be wrong, or that it could turn into the same pile of shit it always does.
