What's So Special About The Speech Of Academics, Other Than It Is Often Stupid?

I get it. Academic freedom is important in the context of research into uncomfortable topics. But some fat-assed bitch shooting her mouth off about the former first lady is not by any stretch of the imagination related to academic freedom, especially since it was uttered on a public forum and not part of any academic endeavor. It is simply a function of free speech. And the aforementioned fat-assed bitch has every right to say what she said. Good for her! She lives in a free society, in which the jack-booted thugs of government are not breaking down her door and hauling her off to prison.

But that doesn't mean that her speech is or should be repercussion-free. We need to separate academic freedom from free speech, because our left-leaning academics (and that is most of them) hide behind tenure and say things that are deserving of repercussions in any reasonable workplace.

If she published a scholarly (hah!) paper making the charge that George Bush and Barbara Bush are responsible for the deaths of millions of people, and actually backed it up with some data and fact and other messy and difficult things like logical analysis, then I would grudgingly support the notion that her work is deserving of some protection.

But jabbering like a fool and looking like nothing so much as an angry sow in a barnyard is not the same thing.

[Although...Barbara Bush Foundation For Family Literacy is almost exactly like genocide]

9 Here's a quick fix for a lot of this nonsense:

Stop giving tax dollars to universities. Zero it out. No funding of state university systems, no student aid, sent by the bucket-loads with the children as they fly off to four years (or more) of having their heads filled with useless crap.

Only to be saddled with tens, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt.

I've read those stories for years. The teacher does nothing but rant about Bush and attack conservatives rather than teach their subject. Then some student records it and gets in trouble.

James O'Keefe should make exposing nutty teachers his next project. Hopefully he could plan the op and release the audio in such a way that it couldn't be connected back to any student.

It's standard in real classes, where students want to later review lectures while studying and trying to learn.

It's verboten in the political indoctrination wings because if a recording got to the outside world, the non intersectionally enlightened couldn't comprehend the true magnificence of such words.

Policywise

Is there no point where the august faculty of an institute of higher learning is chasing away so many donors and enrollees that its jeapordizing the future of the institute
Yes its starting to happen at certain institutes
The institute still cant get take any action
That seems unwise

And so when the institute starts firing faculty members because of budget concerns do they get to prioritize firing the ones running them out of business
So at the end the lunatics will literally be running the asylum

The more offensive you are the more secure your job is

But
It is not the 1st A that is keeping her from getting fired

To me, this is where this professor is running afoul: she is an embarrassment to Fresno State, and her behavior reflects poorly on this institution. Honestly, making a big deal of these ranting lunatic, tenured staff at universities, is kinda missing the point.

We have university administrators who, in state systems, are state employees. We have politicians who set up these tax schemes to allow state school employees to run these schools.

And ultimately, it comes down to us. We value an "education" so highly, we're willing to send our children into these places, for a piece of paper that says they can join the rest of us in "educated" class.

As the saying goes, we have met the enemy... and he is us.

99 How about just getting rid of the bullshit departments that have no business being on any college or university? These departments, and their laughable faculties, are the problem. So long as they're around you cannot have anything reasonable on the campuses. Dissertations investigating delusional circumstances, the alleged effects of popular tv shows, categorizations of children's games ... things all more appropriately found in crappy teen magazines or the pamphlets of insane fringe groups should never be accepted as academic work.

The academy has brought itself to the same place as modern art with its blank canvases and ready-mades. If someone wants to pay for that shit, good for them, but they are nothing that constitutes actual art. If I like the blank canvas as a "piece of art" I can "make one" myself. It is nothing but the Emperor's New Clothes that says that only a 'bona fide', card-carrying 'artiste' can fashion a blank canvas or a ready-made.

Until the colleges get rid of these laughable "departments" there will be nothing but a host of shit flowing all over the academy, drowning and staining any legitimate work that is done there.

101 Here's a quick fix for a lot of this nonsense:

Stop giving tax dollars to universities. Zero it out. No funding of state university systems, no student aid, sent by the bucket-loads with the children as they fly off to four years (or more) of having their heads filled with useless crap.

Sorry, have to respectfully disagree here. First, a lot of university subvention by the Feds comes in the form of research grants. Yeah, there's a lot of crap funded in the social sciences - in fact, almost all of the "research" there is crap - but it also supports research in the natural sciences and engineering, and I think we can all agree that that is worthwhile.

Supporting students who are academically talented - and not just members of a favored demographic - allows able but impecunious students to receive educations that ultimately can benefit society. Otherwise, university enrollment would consist of Kennedy scions, etc.

The problem isn't with the system, it's with the people running the system. I'd zero out almost all social science research as worthless, and cap overheads on Federal grants, a hot issue for natural scientists because they support the shitheads in the humanities who assert that the real sciences are "irrelevant."

That's what university endowments are for. If the school really wants a student then the school can help pay for him.

State Universities used to be cheap enough that anyone who wanted to go could get through with the help of a job, if need be. If they can't get themeselves back down to a reasonable cost then those state systems need to be discontinued. There's no need for expensive state schools - and they certainly don't need to be. THe state schools just raise their costs to keep them in line with the private schools and because there's enough public money flowing to support their bloated budgets.

First, I think we know there is increasing politicization of the "natural sciences," and universities are perpetuating a caste system all across the board there. So... an alternate could be had, where the fed system of funding research goes on elsewhere. Based on something other than the prestige of the university.

I was trying to put some knowledge to a liberal acquaintance re global warming. Now as the assembled brethren and sistren here know, I think it's nonsense.

But if I were active in the relevant field, I'd keep my mouth shut about my skepticism. To do anything else would be professional suicide; your grant applications, papers, etc. - in short, your oxygen - would be anonymously reviewed by people who now hated your guts, and who would be determined to crush your career, for which you'd worked your ass for decades. Think of an M.D. saying/doing something that would torch his career, and you have the picture.

Notice that global warming skeptics tend to be guys who are retired, e.g, Richard Linzen at MIT, or otherwise hard to pressure.

150 I believe it. Urban schools (and the students) are unbelievably bad. People who have never had to interact with people from urban public schools have no idea. It's eye-opening.

Shit, Barky couldn't even do 8th grade level math. Seriously. And, while he wasn't illiterate, his writing was unbelievably poor.

I was thinking that too. When California waived the high school exit exam - which required 10th grade proficiency in English, and 8th grade (!) proficiency in math - a bunch of "students" were delighted that only now could they take up the places they'd be offered at the University of California.

No prizes for guessing the demographics here.

How about charging true costs for courses? The natural sciences bring in a lot of money, so their courses should be cheap.

That would be true at earlier stages. Her requests for citizenship should have been ignored. Her application for the position should have been ignored. And if she whined about how bigoted that was, that too should be ignored.

But now there's more at stake. As ace has pointed out, there are two classes of citizens now. Ones allowed to express their opinions and others who will be bullied into silenced and punished if they have the wrong opinion. So it is right to push back on this and try to get equal treatment.

214 I know and have been friendly with a number of people who have Doctorates and no, most of them are not in the sciences, but they had to live at the schools and do a ton of work and defend their dissertations. These particular folks are seminary professors-all of whom had to know several languages to do work in research-Greek, Hebrew and one of two others if- say- they were teaching Church History. I had a professor I would always refer to as Dr. _______ as a matter of courtesy and when I became friends with him after seminary I would call him John. He never insisted that I call him "Dr._____" when I wrote to him or saw him personally. So, I would say it depends on the person-whether they are pretentious of not. I have met people with doctorates in the sciences who had- IMO-, overweening pride I don't think it's necessarily just because there are in a field like History of English that they insist on titles .

You know, someone who wasn't a full blown retard and who knew something about the law. Nope . . it was she.

Nice going Obama.

Well, from the looks of it, her choice of eating habits and lifestyle are just as retarded as she is and may cause her to find an early membership in the Choir Invisible. Such thoughts warm my cold black heart at night.

It is not a rare phenomenon that what is legal may also be quite irresponsible. That appears in the First Amendment context all the time. What can be said often should not be said. That's what colleges have become. They know what they have to do to keep the money flowing. It's reprehensible, but it's reality.

I always referred to my thesis advisor as "Dr. X," out of respect. He never said anything either way, but he was a Nobel Laureate, and in some respects was kind of an academic father figure, so it just seemed appropriate.

OTOH, anyone else who insisted on being referred to as "doctor" would be relentlessly mocked (as in DOCTOR Amy Bishop). The only exception being in the lecture theater, of course, where it is appropriate to maintain some distance from the heaving masses. But there it isn't necessary to insist; it's understood.

275 How is it possible that 36 million Americans can't read? That's the number claimed over at the Barbara Bush Literacy site.

It goes back decades when educators abandoned phonics for sight reading. Read (if you can) "Why Johnny Can't Read" by Rudolf Flesch published in 1955. Inherited three kids (5, 12, and 14), and the middle one was failing classes even though she was obviously bright. One day I asked her to spell "oak". Deer caught in headlights look. If she did not recognize a word, she had no idea how to sound it out. After 6 months of working with her on phonics, she went from 47th percentile to 66th in standardized testing. On a good not, the youngest one was introduced to phonics in kindergarten and they are relentless about it. Now 8, he reads for pleasure.
