=================

Yeah. "Grozny" is commonly translated into English as "Dread" which, from my understanding, is the common modern meaning of the term. That literal meaning led to Ivan IV's epithet being translated as "Terrible" in English historiography, which might well be inaccurate. He was much more complicated a figure than a word like "Terrible" would imply in English. I think "Awe-Inspiring" actually nails down both the negative (the Oprichnina, anyone" and the positive (Finishing of the Tatars as a threat) aspects of his legacy.

Macron mentions US Marines in WWI in France

Posted by: votermom certified russian matryoshka bot at April 24, 2018 09:35 AM (hMwEB)

Macron brought an oak tree from Belleau Wood that he and PDT planted in front of the White House. While the fight in the Ardennes was much bigger and more decisive than the fight in Belleau Wood, it was a moment that the French treasure and their admiration for the Marines knows no bounds.

Gunnery Sergeant Dan Daly famously uttered "C'mon you sons of bitches, do you want to live forever?" as the Marines took the fight to the Germans, breaking a German offensive and helping change the course of the war.

Gunny Daly was awarded 2 Medals of Honor, and did not complain about the reasons for his combat deployments. Semper Fidelis.

How timely. There's a local progressive who just so happens to be a retired Navy officer who lives here, and who our local fish wrap regularly gives space to on the Opinion page. His name is Ed Conant, and he LOATHES PDT. So, this morning he has three columns devoted to:

"President Trump does not respect military culture"

This guy gives all officers, active duty and retired, a bad name. My late dad was an AF officer who got out after 22 years because he was sick of serving with fellow officers who were more concerned about political futures than they were their country.

349 I've said this before but it's been awhile, so let me say it again: The Aquaman movie is coming. Not now, maybe not soon, but eventually. It has to, if only by process of elimination. Someday you'll be standing in front of a theater, staring at an 'Aquaman' movie poster, glancing at the ticket window, and wondering if you can go through with it. But there'll be nothing else playing except Thor VIII and the seventeenth reboot of 'Spider-Man,' and you'll already have seen each of those three times apiece. At that moment, as you take your first tentative step towards the cashier, know this: You made this happen. You could have said no to Thor VII and the sixteenth Spidey reboot, but you went anyway. You rewarded them for it. And now, oblivion.

352 Grrrrrrrr. A perennial push by IL GOP to get rid of township officials and government -- direct representatives in charge of tax assessments, some roads, direct emergency aid, etc. For some reason these idiots keep trying to create 'consolidated' areas which are less accountable. Sounds like the ex-husband is the wronged party in this case. While it's no doubt convenient for the Democrats (presumably) to pay his lawyers, he doesn't sound like the bad guy here. His wife was sleeping around on him, after all.

390 > Ida thot the horde would welcome an Aquaman movie ... all the mermaids swimming undulating underwater...
'
Yeah, but this is Aquaman we're talking about. If there were any mermaids, they'd actually be tranny mermen.

391 Did Macron's wife do something wrong? She keeps looking down, very guilt ridden.

Well, she fucked one of her high-school students, years ago. And still is.

392 Just finished the motel copy of USA Today. The Olestra of journalism.

can't trust a newspaper that doesn't have comics.

Last Friday night stayed in a hotel. The USA Today weekend edition was on the counter. I thought it was a brochure. What, about 8 pages, hardly any ads. I remember when they slipped it under your door for something to read while getting up I guess. And it was a real newspaper. I noticed no one took it, while in the lobby.

393 Driver has Armenian surname, hated women, was
probably batshit crazy. Not impossible that it was Sudden Jihadi
Syndrome but as somebody pointed out in the morning thread, the
Armenians aren't known for harboring a lot of muslims.

Doesn't mean he can't be a convert. Jihadis are well known for seeking out, converting, and weaponizing the batshit crazy.

394 This is the old, and therefore correct, meaning of the word terrible. "Terreris", as in "frighten". If any one of us actually saw one of God's Angels suddenly, it would inspire terror, at least for a few moments. I imagine "great and terrible" would be a very fitting description.

I mean, come on. Anyone would be scared if they saw a big face hovering in mid-air in the back yard.

396 Speaking of which, Nicaragua is about to explode.

Two dozen people have been killed in violent demonstrations against
the government of Daniel Ortega, the hero of the Democrats like John
Kerry.

The communist bastard who was elected is turning Nicaragua into the next Cuba, I mean Venezuela, I mean . . .

Posted by: Adirondack Patriot at April 24, 2018 09:54 AM (ATVNj)

It's not that simple. Ortega was elected as a Sandinista, but has governed more as a populist than a socialist. He banned abortion a few years ago, because that was good for votes. His real big problem has been spending more money on populist program than the government takes in; running a huge deficit and building a huge debt. Now the IMF is starting to put the brakes on that. Rioting is mostly over his proposed cutbacks in Social Security benefits in an attempt to stem the tide of red ink. Note that Macron is doing the same thing in France, and also getting pushback from the would-be recipients.
And the real concern amongst more thoughtful Nicas is what happens when Ortega, who is well over 70, dies? His VP, and designated successor is his wife, Murillo, who people call "La Bruja", and who is a nasty piece of work.
