20180421 chess pic.jpgThe Polgars At Home

Pic Note

The photo is from The Polgar Variant, a documentary by Israeli filmmaker Yossi Aviram:

The extraordinary story of three Hungarian-Jewish sisters who were raised in Communist Budapest of the 1970s to be chess masters.

The Polgar sisters did not choose to become the heroines of this story. It was their father, who, driven by his educational vision, determined their destiny before they were even born. László Polgár believed that “Geniuses are made, not born,” and he set out to prove it. The canvas he chose was his three daughters. The medium he chose was chess.

No kindergarten, no school…. Three girls, isolated from the normal world of kids, studied and practiced chess...

I haven't been able to find this documentary (cough)bittorrent(cough) online but you can watch a trailer here.

Easier Problem - Black To Play (BWTC 241)

Hint: Pawns are meant to be pushed

Chess GAINZZ

What about your chess GAINZZZ, brah?

More Challenging Problem - White To Play (139)

Here's a fun one. Without the pawn it's a win for White, albeit long and tricky. But Black still has one pawn left to push, and that makes all the difference. What is White's best course of action?

Hint: You can block the pawn with just the knight.

Solutions Update

Easier Problem - Black To Play

20180421 - Problem 1.jpg
r1q2bk1/ppp3r1/3p4/3Pp2p/1PP1Pp2/P1BNnnpP/1R2Q3/2N2BRK b - - 0 1

There are a couple of variations, all starting with

1...g2+!

#1:
2.Bxg2 Qxh3+
3.Bxh3 Rxg1#

#2:
2.Qxg2 Qxh3+
3.Qxh3 Rxg1# (or 3.Qh2 Rxg1#)

So it's a mate in 3

More Challenging Problem - White To Play

20180421 - Problem 2.jpg
8/4K3/8/3k4/8/1N1B4/6p1/8 w - - 0 1

The key for White is to realize there is no way he will able to win with that pawn on the board, but he can secure a draw.

1. Bc4+! Kxc4

White doesn't need the bishop to draw

2.Nd2+ Kd3
3.Nf3 Ke3
4.Ng1 Kf2
5.Nh3+ Kg3
6.Ng1

And White can keep dancing thatnight around all day. Black will never be able to catch it.

If Black decides to not to take the knight:

1...Ke4
2.Bd5+ Kxd5
3.Nd2 Ke5
4.Nf3+ Kf4
5.Ng1 etc.

This technique of blocking a pawn with a knight may come in handy at some point. You may need it to salvage a draw from a seemingly lost endgame.

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and past it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

4 Having reached the ripe age of 29 I'm having a hard time finding video games that interest me. Just picked up a used copy of Resident Evil: Biohazard. It was so painfully dumb and unscary. Despite the mature rating it seemed like it was aimed at 14 year old boys. Last game I enjoyed was Diablo III but after a couple years I'm kind of over that one.

-Loyal until the end: Secret Service agents who served Barbara Bush for decades and who she treated like 'family' refuse to leave her coffin

-The agents stood by the former First Lady's coffin at St Martin's Episcopal Church in Houston, Texas

-Some have served her for decades since she left the White House and said she treated them like family

-Barbara's Secret Service code name was "Tranquility" which former agents said was perfect for her character

I was gonna make a comparison with Pantsuit, but don't want to poison the post.

81 59 I like the B/W photo of the woman in the hat. How did we go from a lithe figure like that as beautiful, to bulbous butt, porn star silicon of the Kardashians as the norm. Not just them, of course. They just happen to be a cornucopia of examples.

When I see these B/W photos, or even photos from the 70s of Charlie's Angels actresses, I think half of women in America have silicone injected into them somewhere. Lips, bust, butt, face...somewhere. Because this is not natural anymore. Just a recent conclusion.

Bc4+ KxB
Nd2+ Kd3
Nf3 (and now the white night can hold off the black pawn unitl the white king mosies on over or trade with it)
Ke2
Ng1+ Kf2
Nh3+ Kg3

They're not synonymous. A stalemate is a special kind of draw, and pretty rare. It happens when you are not in check, but any move you make would put you in check. Therefore you have no legal move to make.

And before the rules of chess were internationally standardized, a stalemate could be the same as a checkmate -- depending on what country or region you were in.

I don't recall having run into one in an actual game but they show up all the time in puzzles. There was an underpromotion example a few weeks back that came from the chess.com forums. Promote to queen and it stalemates, promote to rook and you can checkmate.

Posted by: hogmartin at April 21, 2018 06:08 PM (y87Qq)

128 So ... I guess you really just want to go with g2+ in problem 1. If bishop takes pawn, then knight takes bishop and either queen takes knight (and is then lost for rook) or rook takes knight, Qxh3+ to end with Qf1#.

I still like my Nxf1 better. It might be a bit slower of a mate but it's more of a gentleman's move, not some barbaric pawn attack on the poor king.

Ha! You keep telling yourself that, sir. The one day you'll find yourself in time trouble and looking for a quick win, and then you're opponent realizes that all he needs to do is run out your clock. So he refuses to resign and then, and only then, it will dawn on you that your "gentlemen's moves" are good for nothing except getting you beat.

A female Iranian chess master named Dorsa Derakhshani -- possibly the best female player in Iran, who played on the Iranian national team -- suddenly became an international hero last year when she refused to wear the team's mandatory hijab during a major tournament -- and was kicked off the team.

So she decided to go "on vacation" to the US -- and then never returned to Iran! She enrolled in an American college and as of today is now playing in -- the United States Women's Chess Championships!

The best part? She looks exactly like a younger, sexier version of Sarah Palin:

There's a good horror story in here somewhere. Lovecraft often uses the history of an accursed family in order to build up suspense before he advances the story to the present.

The Kardashians would provide an excellent family for such a backstory. "First Lamar Odom married this Kardashian and was driven insane and tried to destroy himself with drugs. Then Bruce Jenner married into the family and went mad trying to mutilate himself. Then Kanye West developed severe mental problems".

65 1.Bc4+ Kxc4 2.Nd2+ Kd3 3.Nf3 Ke3 4.Ng1 Kf2 5.Nh3+
Knight just keeps popping back and forth from blocking the pawn to checking the king.

After his post, a couple people posted the same "solution" and it was confirmed by the host.

I agree that Bc4+ is the best hope for white, but it depends on black's poor play to get the draw. There's no reason the black king must take the bishop. If black simply moves his king away from the bishop, out of check, then he can queen his pawn on the next move, and should win the game.

Posted by: bradc

No, that's not true -- and that's the whole point behind the problem. Even if black DOESN'T take the biship, wherever he goes white will be able to harass him with the B+N and eventually get enough tempos to get the N back to cover the pawn's queening square Look at the position mopre closely. If, for example, Bc4+ Ke4, then white has Nd2!!. If black, queens, the N forks. If black then goes Kf3, then Nf3!! KxN and Bd5+! and BxP.

Other lines are similar.

No, this isn't true. White secures the draw no matter what Black does. Even if he does not take the bishop, White can chase the black king around on the white squares (the black ones are covered by the knight) until he can gain time with a knight check to get into the blocking position.

That is one version, but I don't think it was quite that diabolical.

Iirc, when Kim was dating some guy named Ray J, they made a tape. Once she became semi#famous on KUWTK, he decided to cash in. Since it was out there anyway, or going to be, her Mom made sure she got some $ from it, bcz it was too late to claw it back.

Now, I haven't followed closely, but I find that the Mom had it filmed & leaked in advance too much to accept. I know Kris is diabolical, but they already had their TV show. She did, however, encourage Kim to pose for Playboy. And Kris did also. She's a strange kinda mom. More like a sister.

John von Neumann gets my vote as the smartest guy of the 20th Century because of his seminal contributions to so many fields. He calculated in his head over a cup of coffee, the math of how A-bomb critical mass would work. He started Game Theory with John Nash to take a break from his harder stuff. Which led to his Mutually Assured Destruction to avoid a hot Cold War. And the list goes on. Liked a good joke at cocktail parties. Converted to Catholicism to hedge his bets.

Von Neumann was considered a super-genius of a different sort ... even among the rest of the people at the Advanced Institute.

BTW, he developed Game Theory with Oscar Morganstern. Nash was much later.

Von Neumann, by himself, shaped a huge part of the 20th century. His PhD thesis was a radical reformulation of Set Theory that presaged the advent of Category Theory and the biggest change of Math through the 20th century.

Of course, we all still operate on computers built on Von Neumann architecture. The guy was truly something else.

It was more the advent of IBM clones than anything Gates did. Apple almost got, rightfully, destroyed because they wouldn't license anything. Shame they didn't get crushed.
