Weekend Gun Thread

IMG_0033.jpg

***

I came across this sign the other day in my travels. Nice little "Mom & Pop" gun store. Where do you do your shopping? Online? Small biz owners? Big box stores?

I'll be honest with you, I haven't purchased a firearm from a private party in years. Hopefully the paperwork of buying new from a FFL will not come back to bite me in the ass sometime down the road.

So Horde, tell us about your shopping habits.

In my travels I visit places where there are armed people. They are both in uniform and plain-clothing. I often am waned or walk through a metal detector. Other than my damn knee everything is good. I don't feel insecure, it is just a way of life.

Do you want to make schools safer? Spend more money on security and allow teachers and staff to carry. The debate: Is arming school staff a good idea?

In the wake of the horrific mass murder at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, in which a lone gunman killed seventeen people, the debate over gun control has erupted with renewed fury not experienced since the tragic Sandy Hook school massacre in 2012. When a mass murder is committed with a firearm, the political debate over guns predictably takes center stage, as the factions that seek further civilian disarmament renew their calls for change in policy while Second Amendment defenders dig in to resist. In this argument over legislation governing inanimate objects, the opportunity is lost to take measures that may truly work towards thwarting the next mass killer. One such notion that garners particular controversy is the proposal to arm teachers and other school staff.

Just a couple of thoughts. Why does the left think that good guys can't hit their target yet bad guys can?

If people are safe in "gun free zones" why are there so many shootings there?

What does Chicago and the JEF have in common with the murders at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, FL?

While the media continues to focus on gun control in the wake of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida, one area student has dug into his school’s policies and found them wanting.

Kenneth Preston, a 19-year-old student journalist who attends high school in Broward County, Florida, has done an in-depth investigation of the superintendent and school board.

Preston’s thorough report, released on Tuesday, says that Broward Superintendent Robert Runcie and the school district failed to spend over $100 million of federal money intended for school safety upgrades.

Runcie once worked under former Obama Secretary of Education Arne Duncan in the Chicago Public Schools system.

By my math at least 4 governmental agencies failed those 17 dead at the high school in question. Yet politicians and some zit faced puke want to take my AR away from me. As Charlton Heston once said...............

Many of us are NRA members and supporters are you prepared for this shit? The NRA's Chris Cox and his wife find their home and business under protest and attack.

HEY’RE NOT GOING TO LIKE THE NEW RULES: Far Left Protesters Target NRA Lobbyists’ Home. “Mr. and Mrs. Cox have been targeted over the past few months by repeated acts of criminal and unlawful conduct, including having their home vandalized on two occasions and Mrs. Cox’s business on another occasion.”

Plus:

“I don’t think the Cox family is getting enough social pressure,” said [Amanda] Gailey, a professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. “Nobody from their kids’ school or their yoga class sees [a protest] happening” at the NRA headquarters…

“If I made him uncomfortable at his house, too bad, he deserves it,” [Catherine] Koebel said in an interview. “I felt unsafe in my home because of his product.”…

“It is aggressive,” Gailey acknowledged. “I wouldn’t do that unless we were protesting someone who I believe is a truly indefensible human being.”

Yeah, I’ve got a little list of that kind of people myself. And you’re on it. And if this is the standard, a lot of lefties better watch out. They have an awful lot of indefensible human beings in their ranks.

The NRA is having a membership drive.

Hopefully, Rolling Stone Magazine knows how to roll a joint better than they know how to destroy an AR-15 rifle.

As gun owners, we can always count on the editors at Rolling Stone magazine to keep us in compliance with the myriad laws pertaining to firearms. So with the news that Dick’s Sporting Goods will be destroying their inventory of AR-pattern rifles that they’re now too responsible and virtuous to sell, the Rolling Stoners did a little research to find out how to do it legally.

It’s no small question. As you may remember, a few days after the Parkland shooting, one know-nothing educator who’s running for Congress in Virginia displayed her lack of knowledge for all the world to see when she converted her husband’s AR into an illegal short-barrel rifle.

The Feel Good Story of The Week.

How about them 30 round magazines?

How to sight in a rifle the correct way.

Sighting in a rifle is an important thing to do if you want your rifle to be dead on when taking a shot.
Which brings us to the Carlos Hathcock way of sighting in a rifle.
For those that don’t know who Carlos Hathcock is, he was a United States Marine Corps (USMC) sniper with a service record of 93 confirmed kills.
Hathcock’s record and the extraordinary details of the missions he undertook made him a legend in the U.S. Marine Corps.
He was a serious threat to the NVA (North Vietnamese Army), which they placed a bounty of U.S. $30,000 on Hathcock’s head.
The following is a story by Gus Fisher a retired MGySgt USMC who talks of the time he met Carlos.
What was unique was the way Carlos had taught Gus to sight in a rifle. Here’s the excerpt from M14Forum:
As mentioned before, I was a very young Marine Sergeant when I came up to THE Marine Corps Rifle Team the first time as the junior Armorer.

3 I pretty much HAVE to buy from stores.
WA state put so many burdens on private party sales that almost nobody bothers anymore.

You have to do the transfer at an FFL and they have to wet their beaks. Makes it more expensive and inconvenient for everyone.

As expected.

19 Drove 50 miles to a gun shop because their online inventory said they had an Italian repro Mississippi rifle, excellent condition, for $265.

Got there and saw it was a repro Zouave rifle, in "meh" condition.

Not amused.

Thought my lemon was gonna turn to lemonade when I spotted a really nice two-band Enfield repro for $315, missing its nosecap. Figured I could attach a new one easily enough. Let's see, how does it mount? I don't see any screw holes... hey, where's the bayonet lug?

Realized it wasn't a two-band Enfield. It was a three-band Enfield that some clown lopped nine inches off of. Way to turn a $750 gun into a $315 one, dipshit.

20 This week was SKS week.

Shot my Russian, Norinco and Yugo SKS against each other.

The Yugo beat the other two out by a slim margin for accuracy but all ran great with nary a hiccup through 200 rounds each at 50 and 100 yards.

Next up, I found some practice rifle grenades online and will see if I can pop a few off with the Yugo rifle grenade launcher.

21 I've done private party purchases for specific weapons, internet providers for generic pieces/parts and local gun shops for all kinds of things just to keep them in business. My local shop is a bit pricey but its a great place to go have donuts on Saturday morning and I enjoy the camaraderie. They also have a Class 3 FFL so there is always something interesting in the shop to look at.

Taking a new shooter out to the range on Tuesday. Should be fun. There has been a decided uptick in newbies talking to me and the other shooters at work lately. One of the new hires is a former Marine who did a shit ton of long distance match shooting at Quantico and Okinawa. Everyone wants to pick his brain.

Depends what you mean. If you're talking about the form 4473, yes you have to do it every time you buy from a FFL dealer. If you're talking about one of those purchase permits you have to get in certain fascist states, that should be good for a certain period of time, but you'll have to check the applicable statutes and regs in your state.

This is what the young'uns were chanting last Thursday in Spokane, WA where I'm visiting after they walked out of class. I also want change. In general, yes. But if you purchase more than one firearm at the same time from the same dealer, there is only one NICS check. That's the federal check; there may be additional restrictions/requirements in your state.

42 I had an interesting experience at my local gun show. I bought an Ruger 357 Magnum. Very good hand gun, but not super pricey.

It turned out that was last one of that model at the table. And when I carried it around (in the box), I had at least four table vendors ask me about it in the next hour.

1. Gun Show people really do like guns.

2. I think guns are selling so well that vendors are trying to keep up their inventory.

43 MisHum, all glory to you for yet another fine thread on skeery, skeery gunzzz and all that pertains thereto.

My purchases have been all three kinds: online, stores, private.

Private in CA and many states has long required the FFL thing. To be honest, this has not phased me a bit, as in most cases, since I'm buying used, I want to "fly before buy", and my indoor range is also an FFL and therefore it's convenient to have the seller come there, test the piece, then do the paperwork and start the 10 day wait.

Have not been in buying mode for a while, for various reasons, but that will change at some point.

70 Skip, not really. There are problem DAs in almost every state. And in CA, the DAs, and the gun-friendliness, vary dramatically from county to county.

The challenger for sheriff in San Diego County's main distinctive angle is that he will be "shall issue" on concealed carry, in dramatic contrast to the incumbent, who is a (particularly obnoxious, smarmy, corrupt) "may issue" guy.

And you know the constitutional crisis and judicial coup that make the gun laws of CA, NY, and NJ possible are the same ones that threaten every other freedom in all 50 states.

103 So I sold my Tanfoglio Witness at a loss and spent the money towards a CZ 97.

I took the CZ to the range. The gun shot slightly high but not worth worrying about. The first 50 rounds were all in the 10 ring at 7 yards. And that pleased me.

So did the trigger. Very, very nice shooting gun and the weight helped with the recoil.

First box was great.

The second box...10 rounds into it, the fucking barrel stop and loaded chamber indicator flew right the fuck off.

I was/am so pissed.

It seems like half the used guns I buy that aren't Glock or Springfield Armory break or have something hinkey about them.

I've emailed CZ support and we'll see if they give me a RA # without me having to raise hell.

Very pissed. Because that first box of ammo was sweet.

Many gun stores take gun collections on consignment. Should Mrs. Oldgeezer be faced with dispersing your collection, a licensed gun shop will help her with everything from proper paper work, to transporting to selling. Whoever your executor is, they will have the legal authority to work with the gun store to sell your weapons.

You really don't have to do this now.

- Lever action rifle*
- Components to build out a basic AR carbine (have the receiver, some tools, 5.56 dies [!], few cases of ammo for the rifle-that-doesn't-exist-yet .... surely symptoms of advanced gunzzz disease)
- Another M1 - probably a Service Grade Special, CMP
- 45LC revolver, probably a Vaquero (lever rifle would also be 45LC)

122 Found this interesting this past week also.

My CZ 27 was failing to eject and or failing to feed intermittently. Two rounds fine, then one stuck half way in/out of chamber. Rinsed and repeat.

I decided to replace the recoil spring and Numrich had them in stock.

When I went to replace the recoil spring, I matched up the old one with the new one.

There was almost an inch worth of length difference between the two, with the new one being longer.

I counted the coils and they were the same.

That damn old spring had lost it's sprung.

Now off this week to see how she runs.

Incidentally, kinda related to guns is prepping, yes?

And prepping is kinda related to having a generator in case of emrgency, ya?

I'm in the process of setting up a generator as a backup. Expensive as hell. I highly recommend not going whole-house and just getting a small, quality generator with a really heavy duty long extension cord to plug in your essentials.

153 Wow Grump, that's interesting. Not familiar at all with NM stuff. I'm a very barbaric, rot-gut sort when it comes to service rifles. Minute of human torso @ a 150 yds, from cover, or off-hand, is my only goal and interest. Paper/precision competitions (rifle or handgun) just don't interest me.

Seems like a nice sight, though. Love the info about brightness, and how a rectangular aperture changes the sighting process.

158 From the rimfire world. I use my rimfire .22lr rifle to practice marksmanship fundamentals. The rifle is a Marlin XT-22 which I bought at Gander Mountain's going out of business sale for $179. This is a bolt action rifle with a 22" barrel which has the Marlin "micro" grooving for its rifling.

I put a 20 moa EGW brand aluminum scope rail mount, (#47302) which I bought from Midway, on the rifle. I use Weaver 30mm 6 screw (#48355) low rings. These are also aluminum - as I don't want to have the thermal coefficient of expansion problems that come from mixing steel and aluminum parts in a scope mount. IIRC I bought the scope rings from Planet Optics.

The scope is an SWFA fixed 10 power rear focus with the Milquad reticle. This scope has approximately 45 mils of elevation adjustment stop to stop. With the approximately 5 mils of elevation in the 20 moa rail that gives me about 30 mils of actual elevation available. The reticle has an additional 10 mils of elevation hold off below the cross hairs. This is the same scope I have on my 300 Win Mag.

I have a cheek riser on the stock made of Kydex - which I bought from Matthews fabrication on Ebay. Took me a while to learn to use that properly, but former U.S. Women's small bore Champion Kirsten Joy Weiss had a video where she talked about cheek risers, and that made all the difference in using the cheek riser.

Most recently I have been using Aguila Super Extra .22lr plated rounds (1250 fps muzzle velocity rating) with the set up. These are Ely primed, and have the highest ballistic coefficient of any .22lr round I have found at a .197 G1 BC. The rounds have a maximum range of one mile plus 1000 yards (2760 yards total). They are very accurate, consistent, reliable and at $3.00 for fifty - economical. As .22 Plinkster says "Anytime you shoot a one moa, 5 shot group at 100 yards with a .22lr it is time to celebrate." I shot one of those the last time out with that ammo.

For ballistic charts I am using those produced at:

www.shooterscalculator.com

I originally used a Caldwell "Bunny Ears" shooting bag for my rear support - but I realized why nobody uses that type of rear bag in competition; it is almost impossible to get equal pressure on the two ears with your non trigger hand and this gives you left to right variance in your groups. I am now using a conventional toe bag made from a filled sock in its place, and after a learning curve am getting better results with it.

One tip I have learned about .22s is to use alcohol dipped tissues ( lens cleaning tissues or hand cleaning tissues work great) to clean the crowns of these rifles, because of the residue that builds up there from all .22lr ammo can effect your accuracy.

Of course you can spend a lot more money than I have to wind up with better accuracy - but for the money this is a great practice rifle.

"An officer on patrol at 9 p.m. Friday noticed a vehicle without license plates in the 1200 block of Haskell Street, not far from San Pablo Avenue.

When the officer stopped the driver, he smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle. Okies said the officer's "investigation and subsequent search revealed both rock and powder cocaine, a derringer, ammunition, and a digital scale.""

Yup....too little for my tastes but very accurate and hopefully now that I got the new spring in reliable once again.

Also, original mags are pricey and if the pistol has any German acceptance marks it is worth more. The commies scrubbed many when they captured them. Also check the barrel for German proofs as some were missed.

Agreed. Whole house is wonderful, but unless one is in an area of frequent, or extended outages (or simply isn't constrained by cost), then a simple 3.5-5kW generator is likely to be fine.

I did install a simple transfer switch, which allows me to selectively power sundry circuits.

Power out?

Roll generator outside.
Run cable to transfer box (switches OFF)
Crank generator
Select circuits to be powered.

Also, if one has natural gas, having a dual fuel generator is very nice. That only requires a connection, valve, and a fuel hose.

Ask a friend with a collection to take you shooting or else find a good pistol range that rents guns and ask them to show you some examples.

It's like asking what kind of car you should get. Even if you narrow it way down to a specific price range and use case, there are probably at least 5-10 examples in that class that are just as good as the others.

Find a range near you that has a good inventory of different brands and types (and calibers, etc). That way you can find one you like and, most important, are comfortable with. If you want a gun you can pretty much shelve and forget and will run when needed, Glock 9mm is probably the gold standard.

I'm a 1911 guy but, decent 1911's go for $1K and 1911's are not maintenance free, nor are they an easy platform to learn.

I've heard good things about the M&P but other than putting a few rounds through one once, I can't tell you much about them.

I mention semi-autos because they tend to have a slimmer profile and therefore lend themselves to conceal carry a bit better than a revolver.

Mike, I find the grip for the Remington 1858 to be small but not too bad, even with my large mitts. The grips on the Colt 1851 and, more so, the 1860 Army are bigger and a better fit. The Colts were the model for the grips used on the iconic SAA.

Ruger has a new mid size (maybe larger) 9mm that is only $300 or so. I've got an old P95 that it evolved from and, while it's one of the heaviest and least sexy guns I've ever owned, I shoot it better than anything else in the safe. Ruger has excellent warranty and customer service, too.

Number one: make sure your deep well pump is a 240 volt model, not 120. You can buy both, and they both are rated at the same horsepower, but the 120 has to pull twice as much current to do its job, with a commensurately greater starting surge. And in a deep well, it may not live as long because of the greater voltage drop over the long wore down the well. It's Ohm's Law, folks, and it's the law around here.
Number two: if you have a deep well pump, or a sump pump, or other appliance with a high starting surge, wire it so that your genset can power it, and it alone, for periods when its use is needed. That way, you have all the generator power available to handle that starting surge, and other electronics in the house will be off, and thereby not affected by the voltage sag.
I have run my house on an old 3500 watt Coleman generator with a 7 HP Briggs and Stratton engine on many occasions. It handled the well pump OK.

291 Now about 'gun control' laws. They were the first Jim Crow laws passed (to take guns away from former slaves) and they are the last Jim Crow laws still being enforced.

The bigots, and that is exactly what they are, are fighting hard to expand them. They got away with keeping those because of the 'Jedi mind control trick' of naming them after an object - which keeps people from noticing that they are really local laws oppressing people's constitutional rights - which is what the Jim Crow laws all were. The bigots are making a concerted push to grow them now because the election of Trump has them terrified that they might not get their way in the future. Their frantic push for More! was a bad mistake; they are getting noticed as more than an annoyance; they screwed up and turned up the temperature of the water too fast.

As the Supreme Court said in Miranda v Arizona "Where rights secured by the Constitution are involved there can be no rule making or legislation which would abrogate them."

296 I'm sure it cost more, but when you do this up front during construction when everything is open and accessible, it's dirt cheap for the downstream benefits gained.

He had a classic Fukishima example. One of the systems he was tasked with replacing had the building backup generators located in the basement. Sadly, the sump pumps in the basement were NOT on the backup generator circuit, thus hilarity ensued during the monsoon season.

well, maybe that is not the best example, the cost of installing two panels vs one, but the entire hurricane zone of the U.S. is an example. Wasn't until the state of Florida mandated hurricane resistant construction codes that anything was done in FL. Not too long after the codes were mandated then people started trying to get them rescinded. Lots of people in FL have brand new flat panels, and video games, and other non-essential equipment but not a generator.

one of my favorite pics ever was of galveston, I think, after a hurricane. everything along the shore looked like piles of kindling except for one house. the house was built on stilts out of concrete and weathered the storm completely intact.

That logic come from the same people who try to convince us that a gun law will be the one law obeyed by criminals.

Look at the laws enforced against people who defend themselves while the criminal walks free and files a lawsuit. Well, two things to consider. First is that when those first revolvers were designed, the average man was much smaller than today.

The other is that since they were single action, they were designed so that the recoil would rotate the gun in your single-handed grip so that you could cock the hammer for the next shot.

346 Scour Craigslist for generator deals. Be patient, you'll find what you need, sooner or later.

And at a great price, too.

I'm upgrading my 3,500 watt unit to a 7,500 watt, true sine-wave generator. $400 for the new one, and selling the smaller one to my neighbor for $250.

While 7,500 watts isn't truly "whole house" (that'd take 11,000 watts, here.), it'll still let me alternate between running one major kitchen appliance at a time (electric stove OR fridge, not both at once), as well as some low-wattage lamps.

Problem with a true "whole house" genny, isn't the cost... unless you overpay for a Generac from Home Despot.

No, the real problem is the fuel burn. More wattage = more fuel.

That said. There's a huge selection of really GOOD two and three cylinder diesel gennys out there. Pricey to buy into, but wildly efficient once installed.

As far as running one outside after a storm. Heavy chain and lock, and if necessary, do something radical like block it in with a vehicle.

Sleep in shifts, if you've enough people in the house.

Damn shame booby traps are illegal.

A key issue for administrators was that the Outing Club frequently visit locations with poor cell phone coverage. This wasnt an issue during the Coolidge administration, but now that cell phones exist, students are apparently expected to remain glued to them at all times.

358 @70 The challenger for sheriff in San Diego County's main distinctive angle is that he will be "shall issue" on concealed carry, in dramatic contrast to the incumbent, who is a (particularly obnoxious, smarmy, corrupt) "may issue" guy.
--------------------------

The current Sheriff of Orange County decided that a particular court case a few years ago meant that "Shall Issue" was the proper course for CCW. Supposedly, when gun control nannies complained, she told them that if they didn't like it, they could vote her out of office in the next election.

She kept her job.

From what I've seen, OC is at a balance point, and could easily tip either way politically. Here's hoping it starts to move back to the right.

I really don't lose all my food though, just the stuff in the refrigerator. There's at least a month of canned and dry stuff, maybe 20 gallons of water not counting the water heater, and I have about 5 gallons of kerosene and a few camp stoves and lamps. Heat is the one thing that I really can't do without if an ice storm knocks power, because even with half a cord of wood, unless the heatilator is running, I just get a trickle of radiant heat from the firebrick.

Looks like the breaker for the furnace is 15A fwiw, but I have to admit I'm not sure if the controls/thermostat and the blower are on the same circuit, nor how I'd rig it up short of opening the breaker and wirecrimping directly on to the furnace leads. I should ask the install guy if there's an emergency supply fixture or something.

377 They make a doodad that hooks into your meter that you can plug your generator into. Pricey, costs more as kW goes up, and you do have to have it installed likely by your power company as they are probably not keen on customers working on the meter. But you don't need any transfer switch or anything. Then use your breaker box to determine what you power.

One thing you can do with a jetboil is thermos cooking. Very economical with your fuel. Works pretty good with lentils and rice, I used to do it for lunch sometimes.

Lentils and seasonings alone in a widemouth thermos in the morning.

Boil enough water or broth for both the lentils and rice. As soon as the water is to temp, shut down the stove and dump in the thermos.

Take the thermos to work, along with the dry rice.

At morning break, around 10am, dump in the rice and reseal.

Open at 12 and have lunch.

You're only running the stove long enough to bring the water to a boil, which really saves on the fuel.

The problem electorally is the population ratios. The areas that go Republican tend to be more sparsely populated. And the Bay Area is so heavily skewed left-wing that it has a solid lock on the state's political candidates even though LA County - which is also heavily left-wing - has a much larger population. LA has conservative pockets which apparently take up a big enough chunk of the population to make it so that the Bay Area has more Dems even with the smaller population.

Pretzel logic.

How would they enforce gun confiscation? By using the police - they HATE the police, but in order to achieve their vision, they will need a violent, terroristic police force in order to enforce their utopia.

There are a lot of contradictions in Leftist/Statist pretzel logic but when you get right down to it, they are for the most part nothing more than a bunch of spoiled brats. Hence the pretzel logic.
