Washington Post Poll: Democrat Lead in Midterms Down to Just 4 Points

Overall, averaging in all of the recent polls, the lead is down to 6.2 points, per Real Clear Politics.

One odd thing, that might not matter either way, is that what 538.com calls "gold" standard polls, those who do live human interviews (as opposed to robocalls), etc., now show the tiniest Democrat lead in forever, while non-"gold" polls show their lead to be about at the peak it's often been at.

It's unclear if this matters. I could see Republican voters being more honest on a robocall survey -- not worrying about the judgment and contempt of a human interviewer -- and yet, Republicans now fare better with human interviewers.

Update: Is the change due to Democrats' determination to ban guns?

I'd noticed that too. Time-Warner (now Speculum) now blocks unauthorized robocalls and calls with spoofed caller IDs (yay, they finally did something good), but recently hairballs have been using local numbers. I never answer if I don't recognize the caller ID.

And, just because it's how I roll, I have set up my phone to forward all unanswered calls to the phone of a notorious local robocaller. If I get to the phone before the voice mail picks up, I disconnect the phone, and whoosh! off it goes to the robocalling firm.

______________________

Another explanation, maybe Republican voters tend to just hang up on robo call surveys (tend to be older, less tech happy) but maybe are more likely to answer a human caller? Like how older people go inside a bank branch to cash or deposit a check instead of an ATM?

I'm not entirely dismissive of polling as some people, here I think it can show some trends and is an educated guess about where a race stands.

I do think though by in large, Republicans tend to avoid being polled at all, and I believe that actually has negative consequences because jellyfish Republican politicians see those polls and govern scared.

It's well documented. I believe the change happened in 1996 (correct me if I got the date wrong, folks) when NBC (if I remember correctly) decided to switch the former partty-identification colors (red=Dem blue=GOP) to be the reverse, so as to erase the stigma of red=communist which some analysts thought was detrimental to the Dems' national perception. All the oither networks quickly followed suit, and a "new paradigm" was born.

To this day, the relentlessly trumpet the "red state"="conservative state" meme to make sure the commie stain is permanently expunged from the Dems' reputation.

133 According to wikipedia:

"According to The Washington Post, the phrases red states and blue states were coined by Tim Russert, although in that same article Russert states that he wasn't the first to use the terminology.[14][15] This term refers to those states of the United States of America whose residents predominantly vote for the Republican Party (red) or Democratic Party (blue) presidential candidates, respectively. John Chancellor, Russert's NBC colleague, is credited with using red and blue to represent the states on a US map for the 1976 presidential election, but at that time Republican states were blue, and Democratic states were red. (How the colors got reversed is not entirely clear.) During the 1984 presidential election, between Ronald Reagan and Walter Mondale, ABC News used a map which showed Republican states as red and Democratic states as blue. According to David Brinkley, that was because Red = R = Reagan.[16] Mainstream political discussion following the 2000 presidential election used red state/blue state more frequently."

The reason I ask is that I thought there were a fair number of Democrats who actually owned guns. I notice that a lot of the RCP Trump approval polls are using 'adults' with the rest using registered voters except for Rasmussen who screens for likely voters. All the non-likely voter polls are propaganda to beat down Trump supporters. Certainly the adult Trump approval polls are worthless except to gauge the momentum at any point in time. I'll bet a likely voter screen of that WashPo poll would have the R's even or up.

165 Red and Blue were the traditional colors for almost the entire last century, IIRC, but who they applied to varied over time, until 2000, though NBC used red for republicans until 1984, and also in 1992 (but not 198.

Some people credit Tim Russert (mentioned above) and Matt Lauer for locking this down to the reverse (blue for Democrats) in 2000.

It wasn't really standardized until then, and other colors (like yellow and green) were used before.

It's funny to think with all the red-blue talk that this is a pretty recent thing.

Actually -- no joke -- in Japan, the corner convenience store chains (such as 7/11) really DO have incredibly fresh sushi and sashimi, which is replaced not just every day but more than once per day. A lot of these convenience stores are basically the equivalent of AM/PM stores at US gas stations. Insider-tip sites often say that you can get super-fresh sushi for low low cost at these places.

They need to reinforce their argument and yell as loud as they can that they want gun control (confiscation) and they want it now. Gun control/gun bans are a loosing issue for the left. I think this is one issue that Americans will never concede. Free speech/Free religion and the right to bear arms are non negotiable for a big majority. So the commie/socialist/nazi left will never win on gun control.

313 Meanwhile over in England, leftists and celebrities (including Patrick "Jean-Luc Picard" Stewart) are now openly calling for a "peoples' vote" for Brexit, AS IF THE ACTUAL ORIGINAL VOTE DIDN'T HAPPEN.

They dismiss the actual vote results as the result of "deception" and thus they DON'T COUNT -- which is actually the same argument at the heart of the "RussiaGate" scandal here -- if the Russians tricked people into voting for Trump, then the election is illegitimate, they argue.

The UK leftists make no bones about it: They desperately want to end the democratic system, and only allow Deep State leftist bureaucrats to rule over the nation. They hate real elections -- they just come right out and say it - because they get stomped in real elections.

And they would eagerly do that in the US if they could get away with it -- end elections, end federal democracy.

Don't give them a chance. Not a whiff of a chance. They will bring totalitarianism to the world.

President Trump is gaining in popularity because more and more people recognize that the economy is rebounding. A good barometer of the health of the economy is how busy restaurants: a $h!tty economy equals less disposable income for eating at a "nice" restaurant, while a good economy equals more "date nights."

The last couple of months, Mrs. Cop and I have noticed increased business at the local restaurant row. This Saturday, we waited 1-1/2 hours to get a seat to eat at a more expensive restaurant and everyone was in a great mood.

I think a lot of people secretly admit to themselves that if the Donks get back in power, "the good times, they be ending much too soon."

So ... kinda like California and Prop. 8, then? How many times do Californians have to vote against faux marriage to have it actually, finally, stick and not get overturned by some poofter in a black muu-muu?

I saw that last night. Comment Board people were pissed off.

The Left keeps want to do elections and recounts and revotes until they win. It is insane. And "Picard" said something like "he would not let this happen". He would stop Brexit. Like he is still Picard and rules the Federation of planets.

My dislike of celebrities and their hubris is hitting its zenith. There was another awards show last night. Just shut up and go away...all of you. Ugh.

I gauge the health of the economy based on the amount of late night traffic I see. From '09 up until about a year ago, there was a very noticeable decrease in traffic here in town.

Now the roads are always busy like they were 10 or 12 years ago at all time of the day and night.
