Judge Forces Michael Cohen to Disclose Name of Client Who Had Instructed Him to Keep It Secret

Cohen has multiple clients, but some wish to not be known.

Cohen was in court protesting the FBI raid into his confidential exchanges with clients. The judge demanded he reveal the name of his client, despite the client's instructions to keep it secret.

And of course the leftwing is now attacking Hannity for not disclosing his secret relationship with Cohen:

Hannity had specifically directed Cohen to not reveal his status as a client.

Cohen declined to identify the third client in a filing in Manhattan federal court, where he will appear Monday at a hearing to determine whether federal prosecutors can review materials seized in an FBI raid on his office, home and hotel room last week.

"The third legal client directed Mr. Cohen to not to reveal the identity publicly," Cohen’s lawyers wrote.

And then the FBI raids Cohen's offices and bang! It's in the HuffPo.

It's almost as if this raid were a political hit intended to embarrass Trump and his supporters and score points for the Democrat/Socialist coalition.

Correction: I initially wrote that this was a leak from the FBI. I was wrong. Cohen was forced to disclose this in court. Why it wasn't disclosed in the judge's private chambers and kept secret, I don't know.

I suspect because #TheResistance.

Lawyers, necessarily, are going to have clients we don't like and clients we're sympathetic for. Almost all of them have both. For the law to have any value, for there to be any justice at all, we have to shrug at a lawyer taking a scumbag client once in a while and understand that doesn't mean the lawyer is awful or that every client they have is a bad person.

106 The Ends Justify the Means, comrade.

If we break a hundred laws and violate the Constitution every which way from Sunday, but in so doing manage to create the appearance of scandal -- people will remember the scandal, not the crime that generated it.

Except, of course, if it goes the other way. THEN we focus on the crime of the whistleblower, not the material he exposed.

For example, when one of James O'Keefe's team told a marginal untruth to get past a security barrier to take a devasting video of leftist malfeasance, ALL the media reports obsessed over the "crime" she committed, and barely mentioned the incredible expose' she obtained as a result. And then O'Keefe's organized was prosecuted for this "crime."

But when the shoe's on the other foot - LOOK AT THAT SCANDAL, folks! Ignore how we got it!

Hypocrisy, they name is leftism.

Dear bluebell,

There is a president in a scandal who has a lawyer. His lawyers offices were raided and all his stuff taken.

The lawyer has two other clients, one a fundraiser with a funny and unfamiliar name, the other was not disclosed.

Judge Kimba Wood just ordered the lawyer to disclose that the third client is Sean Hannity.

I have not yet seen any horde-sourced explanation as to how that makes a lick of sense.

Two reasons:

Posted by: Margarita DeVille at April 16, 2018 03:26 PM (0jtPF)

Two reasons it is much better:

1) The military is more loyal to the people and President than to a Congress which openly despised it.
2) The people are not going to meekly submit. At least not at the 100% level required, and they have ways of making police want to hunker down instead of aggressively raid.

Which makes the Derp State less Castro, and more Caeucescu before the mob descends.

Details are irrelevant, but years ago I found myself on the receiving end of a nuisance suit. My attorney advised me that there were two routes:

1: Fight the suit in court, incur a bunch of costs, for an uncertain outcome.

2: Make a settlement offer to the son of a bitch and send him on his way.

I chose option 2. And my attorney happened to also be a good friend of mine who was in a limited practice since he made his pile already and was happy to be in the game on his own terms instead of as a part of a ginormous firm juggling traffic cases all day.

So, Perry Mason - what about my attorney and the advice/representation he provided would merit disdain?

On July 8, 2010, Wood was the presiding judge over the US case against ten alleged Russian 'illegals' involved in the Illegals program.

On November 19, 2010, Wood received attention in connection with a letter to the court from Bennet M. Epstein, an attorney, who asked for time off from a trial to attend his then-unborn grandson's bris, if the baby proved to be a boy. In response, Wood wrote that Epstein would be permitted to attend the bris, but that "if a daughter is born, there will be a public celebration in court, with readings from poetry celebrating girls and women."

You are wiggling.

You made hay of it with the use of the word "only." What do you mean by "only?" Again, is there some threshold that you have which would merit Cohen to additional legal protections?

And as long as we're at it, my lawyer friend also has done work for others in my circle from time to time. Are you on such solid logical ground that you can comfortably infer that he did the same kind of work for, oh, my then-14 year old nephew as he did for me?

I cannot help but you are retreating into the whole "I was just asking questions!" defense when conspiracy theorists start getting pushback. I think you're doing a lot more than that, frankly.

So - what is the exact point you're making with the whole "only" jibe and labeling Cohen as a "fixer?" Support your argument and implications.

No, but if you're paying a practicing attorney for legal advice (like writing an NDA) they have that protection.

It's really not even a question, people that are throwing up excuses for why he gets raided like number of total clients are just trolling.

And if we want to say Cohen "only" had 3 clients in a small time frame like 15 months (despite a career as a lawyer with far more clients than that) it's a meaningless statistic.

329 I think BINO is getting a bad rap - I wrote this in thread below:

Here are the things that make the Hannity thing "interesting."

First, the titillating aspect - the other 2 clients, the GOP fundraiser guy (Broidy?) was a payoff to a baby momma. We know Cohen paid off Daniels, presumably that was on Trump's behalf. So, why is he advising Hannity? Easy to draw inference is hushmoney to a honey.

This would be a blow to Hannity in a way that it isn't to Trump but was to the fundraiser guy. Hannity is a Trump supporter, so MFM would love to dirty up a Trump supporter.

Trump enviromental damage is another interest. Hannity supports Trump, absent Trump's win in 2016, this exposure for Hannity is his punishment.

Also of note - ALL of the details of Broidy's deal are out in the public now. And he got fired. Mission accomplished for the Left. I said when it happened the purpose the raid on Cohen was to get info to leak.

This lawfare business will get out of control. It will get out of control and we'll be lucky to live through it.

My recommendation: drink heavily, and buy ammo.

He probably did some work for Don and his buddies, and Don, liking loyalty and needing such services from time to time brought him on board. This of course cuts against the idea that the Stormy payment was a campaign contribution as it was a matter of routine business

In this case, you have a slut whose likely banging the Dem lawyer as part of her payment to him and the Dem lawyer has already lined up the judge through shopping. Add in a politicized, sleazy Special prosecutor, a look the other way AG who is too terrified of firing Mueller himself or at least reining in the prosecutor, and you have what we are looking at.

If it's for the purpose of determining whether you should obtain legal counsel, a consultation with an attorney is, in fact (and law) privileged.

As for raiding an attorney on an accusation of being a "co conspirator" this sort if thing should have a very, very high bar of evidence (e.g. tape recorded call of the attorney saying "let's continue to lauder that money!") or you should be raising every too-cute/getting by the backdoor what you can't get through the front alarm to any serious /uncorrupted Judge.

Correct. One thing's that's been glossed over here is that payment has very little to do with the matter, except as proof (if needed) that the relationship existed. Roughly speaking, if a client seeks legal advice, and the client understands and expects that his information will be kept confidential, then attorney-client privilege applies even if he can't come up with the fee. There is an exception for current or future illegal activities, but NOT an exception for past illegal acts - otherwise any defense lawyer could be put on the stand and be required to testify whether his client had ever privately confessed to him. While some people may wish that to be the case, our system does not allow that.

Lawyers are hired ahead of time to help keep you from committing a crime. Or they are hired once you are charged with a crime to prove you didn't do it, or to mitigate a sentence when the crime is absolutely obvious.

The worst that should happen with Trump and the slut's situation is if it is proven that the payoff and NDA is somehow illegal, then Cohen is guilty of malpractice for his client.
Which is what I suspect was the idea is in getting a warrant to raid Cohen's office. Unfortunately, so much of the judiciary is as corrupt as the FBI, so there is going to be a lot of twisting of the law by this court and others, while the left and never trumpers look on with approval.

It's news because the FedGov just burned his ass while going after Trump's lawyer illegally.

So are you next, or me? Because FedGov lawyers are now proven to piss all over our laws because, well, they carry guns and nobody can stop them.

Let that sink in for a while.

Welcome to Cuba. Or Venezuela.

577 Even if the dims take the house, it wont be by much. They wont have the votes to impeach him. The best they will be able to do is have an house impeachment investigation and an approval from that committee. But it will fail on the floor. But the dims will claim that while Trump is under this cloud, he should not be able to appoint any more judges, especially SCOTUS judges. Because when you boil it all down, THIS is what it is really all about. Without the judiciary, the is lost.

.... no that's why people are reacting poorly to the information. The news is blaring this out as BREAKING and sensational! Hannity had a lawyer, A LAWYER!!!1!!!

That's not news. Its just a sleazy attempt to condemn the man by association.

580 @576

The FIBS have come up with a new legal theory that the attorney client priledge only exists if you represent clients+N, N being the number necessary to enjoy attorney client privledge.

Sadly it seems that Michael Cohen doesn't meet that criteria.

581 516 Well I hear that the "rank and file" Judges are really pissed off. So there's that.

Who gives a sh*t? Obviously they don't. Not enough to do anything about it, anyway.

So they huff and puff, and take home their $200k salaries and luxurious benefits, and have a cigar and a Scotch? Fuck them all.

The system is hopelessly broken. When this many FBI and Federal Judges allow this kind of crap, as my Granny used to say, "Katy Bar the Door!".

Shit just got real. I mean effing real. Multiple Federal Law enforcement and Judges have conspired and willfully acted to bring down the duly elected President of the United States.

Is this last 4 days of activity in the SDNY treason, or insurrection?

Yeah, this whole "its shocking the law enforcement and legal community" doesn't seem to have much teeth. Lawyers and judges everywhere should be in absolute lockstep opposition to this crap but they just don't seem to care.

The entire impeachment question is a game of chicken between a cheat and a psycho where nobody can actually be sure what's just past the edge.

Honestly, I barely need my fouled up brain chemistry to be anxious as hell right now.

My guess: Redstate put up an article the other day how Cohen went to a
shit law school. Probably Cohen, not able to go partner track at a white
shoe firm, cut his teeth doing the type of legal work those firms don't
like to do- keeping things secret, ie affairs.

He probably did some work for Don and his buddies, and Don, liking
loyalty and needing such services from time to time brought him on
board. This of course cuts against the idea that the Stormy payment was a
campaign contribution as it was a matter of routine business

Probably does "Family Law" for Trump.

Pre-Nups, getting rid of models he bangs, that sort of stuff.

Those sorts of things are usually handled by single lawyer offices and not the big firms. Why? Less lips to spill the beans to lawyers for the other side.

The top divorce attorneys in town all had their offices at the building where my office was. All were single lawyer, and all had been like that for years.

You can't decide if if the lawyer is guilty of crimes without a trial!

This is the USA.

The fbi can't decide a lawyers guilt. They can only press charges and arrest. The lawyers is due his day in court.

WE decide what is important and WHO gets to know it.
