The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

Quality means doing it right when no one is looking. Henry Ford

Quote II

The wisdom of man never yet contrived a system of taxation that would operate with perfect equality. Andrew Jackson

Quote III

In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes. Benjamin Franklin

Quote IV

Elections should be held on April 16th- the day after we pay our income taxes. That is one of the few things that might discourage politicians from being big spenders. Thomas Sowell

Quote V

Whatever Trump says, America is not coming out of Syria. We are going deeper in. Trump’s commitment to extricate us from these bankrupting and blood-soaked Middle East wars and to seek a new rapprochement with Russia is “inoperative.”Patrick J. Buchanan

*****

Do you remember when President Trump was accused of calling certain countries "shit holes and/or hell holes? He denied it. So let me say what we are all thinking. Why the hell are we taking in people from 3rd world shit holes?

The first known epidemic of extensively drug-resistant typhoid is spreading through Pakistan, infecting at least 850 people in 14 districts since 2016, according to the National Institute of Health Islamabad.

The typhoid strain, resistant to five types of antibiotics, is expected to disseminate globally, replacing weaker strains where they are endemic. Experts have identified only one remaining oral antibiotic — azithromycin — to combat it; one more genetic mutation could make typhoid untreatable in some areas.

Researchers consider the epidemic an international clarion call for comprehensive prevention efforts. If vaccination campaigns and modern sanitation systems don’t outpace the pathogen, they anticipate a return to the pre-antibiotic era when mortality rates soared.

Prevention?

No. As in HELL NO! The NSA wants a key to obtain everyone's encrypted data.

Like it or not, you are your data. In this day and age, your receipts, social media activity, public records, GPS data, and internet search history are the proof of who you are. And while you may have thought you had secrets, the Federal Government would like the rest of them.

The seemingly innocuous pieces of information we trade away every day create a detailed mosaic of our lives used to target advertising and create personality profiles that are exploited by the FBI, political operatives like Cambridge Analytica, and Russian propagandists.

Maybe I am over reacting. The government do anything illegal or unethical? Guess I'm going to hell.

I had my annual physical last week. Being in flyover country my Doc and I discussed fishing (Both kinds) and hunting. No, there weren't any questions asked about guns. Fortunately the clinic I attend isn't moonbat f*cking crazy.

This morning, for the first time in over a year, I had an appointment with a specialist at the local hospital in Paradise. I arrived at the hospital and the clinic for specialty services to check in.

The check-in procedure went like this:

“Hello, I’m here for my appointment with Dr. ________.”

Receptionist: “Thank you. Just point to the line that you associate with yourself and we can get started checking you in.”

She slid the following laminated card over the top of her workstation screen and waited.

And waited.

And waited.

And I, ever so slowly, absorbed this new directive...........

When temperatures spiked it was called 'Global Warming'. Then the temperatures dropped and it was called 'Climate Change'. That didn't work so now let's call it 'Climate Restoration'.

Of course, anyone even slightly familiar with the history of the Earth's climate knows there is no one climate to be restored. We have had ice ages that covered much of the land on which Americans now live in glaciers. Is that the climate we wish to be restored?

Proponents claim they merely want to get rid of the "pollutants" – i.e., CO2, which is necessary for life and is used by plants to grow. (Higher levels of atmospheric CO2 already are increasing crop yields.) But buried in this phraseology is the hidden assumption that the atmosphere, not solar activity, controls climate. This is a ridiculous assumption on its face, since the ultimate source of our energy – atmospheric and carbon-based deposits – is the Sun.

By the way, solar activity is crashing now.

The time to demand clean pot is now. So says Ziggy Marley.

After decades of struggle, marijuana legalization is finally sweeping the land – now, with the expansion of cannabis, we must be careful both as consumers and as businesses to not allow the industry to put profits above the health and wellbeing of the people.

Consumers must take the lead in holding the marijuana industry – including growers, dispensaries and brands – to high moral and business standards in order to safeguard the health of marijuana users in whatever form it is consumed.

Attempting to sell expensive "hot" wine is not so easy. Once again, crime doesn't pay. Or pay well.

ONE DECEMBER NIGHT IN 2014, a group of wine aficionados congregated in front of Thomas Keller’s famed French Laundry restaurant. They hadn’t called ahead to see if the Yountville, California, institution, which has an infamous, months-long waitlist, could accommodate them. Since it was Christmas night, the restaurant wasn’t even open.

Regardless, the crew got what they came for. They broke in and walked out with over $500,000 worth of wine, including some of the most coveted bottles in the world.

Nearly four years later, investigators have recovered all but a handful of the 110 missing bottles. Earlier this year, the Department of Justice released a statement confirming that two of the thieves—Alfred Georgis and Davis Kiryakoz—also conspired with others to steal and transport fine wines from Alexander’s Steakhouse in Cupertino, California (that theft clocked in at $32,000). Additionally, Kiryakoz admitted that he’d been part of a group that swiped $290,000 worth of wine in 2013, from San Francisco’s Fine Wines International, according to SF Gate. Both men have since been sentenced to time in prison.

Go figure, Rehabilitation and correction doesn't work.

Seven inmates were killed during fights that lasted more than seven hours at a South Carolina prison Sunday night and into Monday morning, according to officials.

At least six emergency agencies responded to the "mass casualty incident" at Lee Correctional Institution in Lee County that resulted in the seven inmate deaths and 17 other inmates requiring medical attention, the S.C. Department of Corrections announced early Monday morning.

The fight, which spanned three dorms, was likely gang related, and spawned from a disagreement over territory, contraband and cellphones, SC Department of Corrections Director Brian Stirling said.

Injured. Cold. And in the middle of nowhere.

I’ve gone back and forth on whether or not to share this story. I didn’t want to undermine the seriousness of the incident – and I’m embarrassed and disappointed. But here it is.

In March, I traveled to Greenland with Merrell athlete Jason Antin and a film crew from Stept Studios for some adventure and exploration. Our goals were to quickly traverse the Arctic Circle Trail and then put up some new lines on unclimbed and un-skied peaks north of Sisimiut...........

Going to be a criminal? It is probably a good idea not to film yourself unless you want to be a Genius Award Winner.

ROYAL PALM BEACH — A Royal Palm Beach man accused of burglary has his vehicle’s dashboard camera to thank for landing him in the Palm Beach County Jail, according to an arrest report.

Xavier Inocencio Moran, 25, is accused of using a baseball bat first to break into the Sally’s Beauty Supply in Royal Palm Beach on April 5, then on a safe in order to attempt entry.

The rescued become the rescuers. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

Most of the dogs recruited are unlikely to be adopted because of their animated personalities.

"What others see as bad behaviors, we see as talent and potential," says Denise Sanders, SDF’s communications and development officer.

They also ensure lifetime care for every dog in their program. "Once rescued, these dogs will never need to be rescued again."

I mistakenly thought the big ball of molten rock had more to do with it than the atmosphere as if the temperature was mapped from the center of the earth outward the temperature would go from literally millions of degrees to orders of magnitude less where all those sun rays beam their energy onto the surface to zero outside the atmosphere.

The beauty of a free market is that goods and services are exchanged with mutual benefit to both parties, which leads to efficiency, lower cost, and better options. Because this produces wealth, this leads to an ability to help those who don't have the financial needs to cover necessities.

Rehabilitation and correction don't work. My brother-in-law worked for Department of Corrections and one day he said, in a casual manner when their time is up, we have to let them go. They are still violent, and very dangerous so we walk them out to the bus in handcuffs and leg irons. At the bus door, we unlock the restraints and the convict gets on the bus, and the bus takes him home, still violent and very dangerous.

Unfortunately for them, what's happening looks like it is going to completely invalidate their global warming nonsense, so they have to work very hard to try to make everyone ignore the latest scientific measurements.

But yeah, I'm a little freaked out by it. We may be going into another little ice age.

"[Onco doc] will place order today for hospice care. They will send team out to evaluate Joyce and we will go from there. I think we will go with home hospice initially. I did tour another hospice house today called Brandley house and it is part of Hospice of Marion County. It is quite nice and I would feel good about putting Joyce there if need be. Boston on Monday should give the AGW aholes a clear picture of life on a cold planet: people running, producing plenty of heat, well-clothed, getting hypothermia from exposure to wind, wet and cold. That is what helped to make life nasty, brutish and short back in Hobbes' day.

And finally, on typhoid...EVERYONE gets a Z-Pack!!!

89 Hmm, grill's ready, but as I go, I doubt we'll get "deeper" in Syria. Our interest there is Iran, and we've carefully avoided direct engagement against that enemy. Direct. And that one is moving on to a more conventional confrontation with Israel, in any case.

Currently we're jaw-boning A-rab partners to "replace" our activities there. Which I rate as "Extremely Unlikely To Actually Work Out," because, A-rab partners. Oh, they'll do it. It just won't work the way it would if we kept our hand on the tiller.

All pretty much a side-show, or secondary, compared to the only reason we've been involved - Iran.

115 Just read through the comments.

Slap, my heart breaks with you. My mom is dementing, and my dad's executive functioning can't handle it. Last week one night, she was hallucinating--he ran away from her and locked himself in another bedroom.

Many days, my sister visits and notices that my mom smells like feces and is wearing dirty clothing. And this is with home help for three hours every day.

My dad refuses to move out of their 4500 sq ft home or give up his two 80-lb dogs. Even if it means my mom eventually succumbs to sepsis and lives in the meantime in filth.

We siblings will eventually have to take him to court to wrest custody away--which will break the family.

The only thing we can do is love both of them--and each other--as we muddle through this terrible mess.

This is the first time I listened to "The Wall" since about 1978 and I remembered all the lyrics.

Re the Morrissey story... I've read that when Weird Al Yankovic finally got to meet Paul McCartney (not sure how long ago it was), Al suggested they work together on a spoof of "Live And Let Die," titled "Chicken Pot Pie."

160 ONE thing California does right about taxes:

If you don't file anything by the deadline (today), they AUTOMATICALLY give you the extension to August. I also heard today, the state doesn't charge penalties & interest for the 4-month delay either.

Must be a leftover from the Reagan days that the libs in Sacto haven't fcuked up yet. Anyway, I actually wish the Feds did it that way... except I imagine they figure that if they did, April would stop being the real deadline, and August would become the new one.

Every one of those men in that prison is someone's son. Some of them may be beyond redemption on this mortal coil, but some may not be.

And yet, we have a duty to protect the innocent from predation by those who will not or cannot restrain their violent and destructive impulses.

Everyone had a mother and a father. Not all of them were worth two rotten damns, and for that we pay the price. But, I will not allow those "families" to destroy the innocence or future of my son.

They will give up their rights by their choices. All of them, no matter their background, are adults, and suffering consequences is how we don't get that behavior again. Prison is the consequence.

When one deliberately, knowingly, engages in high risk behavior, and suffers consequences, I have no sympathy. More especially, I'm not inclined to *pay* for the circumstances of their own creation.

It's not as though I haven't done risky things, but I was behaving foolishly, and taking foolish risks. I was lucky. Not all of my friends have been so lucky, but that doesn't change my perspective.

230 I haven't sought out any of that prison riot story. It did seem that the usual crowd was whining that waah the prison did not break up that riot right away. Warden or spokesperson was explaining that "hell no, we did not and do not send 2 or 3 people into a riot, we waited until reinforcements from multiple agencies we asked for help could arrive so we could actually break up the fighting when we went in"

Posted by: booknlass at April 17, 2018 10:44 PM (xGMkv)

Been dealing with advanced Alzheimer's dementia with my mom. She lost what she was over 2 years ago, at this point she's become maximum assist and is regressing to the comprehension of a small child. Doctor is putting in an order for hospice care, which should be some help. I get 25 hours a week of a home care aid. She can't walk anymore which is actually a blessing since she has had no comprehension of reality and kept trying to go to the neighbor's homes because that was where she thinks her parents and sisters are. The drawback is that since she can't walk she has to be sponge bathed and changed often, usually having no realization that she's lying on a soaked bedsheet.

You ask me, this has to be one of the cruelest ways to go, and it's not a happy dementia since she always wants to "go home" when she's in her own house and the home she thinks she lives in hasn't existed in 70 years.

You get no argument from me about doing time. Although I think mandatory minimums and "enhancements" need to be re-thought.

My point is that those in prison retain their humanity--and we should treat them as humans. They should be safe from predation themselves--and sometimes the predators carry the keys.

It pays to remember that not every one of them will be an old man when released. If we can encourage transformation, it benefits everyone. If we create an environment where being feral is the only way to survive, we will turn even potentially salvageable men into base creatures.

237 We've all done stupid stuff. All I'm saying is that shit happens. Even on extreme trips like that one. Doesn't mean I wouldn't send help. Some places do bill for rescues. Most do not on the theory that they may need the help sometime. I've seen too many good, experienced people killed on what are usually pretty easy trips because of bad luck. Mountains, snow, forests. I bless the rescuers who go out when they are called and who do so willingly.

If someone like Jimmy Savile is convicted, I'd not mind if he was remanded formally to Vlad The Impaler, and put on display high outside the BBC's main office; but that's different from throwing him in the clink and letting him be raped. The rapists there deserve Vlad too.

To sum up, criminals deserve what the judge metes out, but getting bullied by other criminals is not part of that sentence.

The question is, who created that environment? It is often the only way to deal with a feral population. We cannot deal with them out here. How do you propose to deal with them inside?

They must interact with people, and they are not made for that. The people who must house, feed, direct them are humans too. We cannot be the parents these people never had. We cannot change history for them--only they can choose that, and most don't.

While the urge toward redemption is a noble one, until you find a way to cure years of hardened feral behavior, you will not achieve the results you desire, and people will suffer and die accordingly.

262 I think I am lucky, family-wise, in that, while the ladies all go off in dementia, we go happily.

My grandma, God rest her soul, decided one day that she would just forget the previous 50 years or so. When my Aunt Dorothy stopped by, Gran told her to go upstairs and tell Shirley to get ready for school. That would be my mom, who was pushing 65.

Once she was gently ensconced in the nursing home, she kept peeing the bed, and nobody seemed to have a solution, until mom noticed that the bathroom in that room was the wrong direction from the bed. Gran had lived in the same house for 80 some odd years, and had always gotten up and headed for the bathroom in the same direction.

Once she changed rooms, everything was great.

She was happy, and the staff loved her, even if she had no idea where she was, what year it was, or who anybody around her was. She did call me by my mom's name when I visited, so something was still floating around in there.

My mom has lost all ability to remember things beyond about 5 minutes. Short term is mostly gone, and lots of long term things are fading. She still knows who we are, and as long as she sticks to her routine, she's good. She will be 90 in another year, and then we will have to re-evaluate.

I'm hoping to get to the point where I can sit on the porch and shake my walking stick at everyone and yell sometimes.

We learned tonight that he was sick when arrested. They decided to insert a catheter, done by someone that was not a medical professional. He was damaged and they had to take him to the hospital. They released him from jail before he was admitted. He had surgery and part of his prostate was removed. Charges were about $130,000. When the hospital released him, they rearrested him. They didn't want to pick up the tab. He is talking to a lawyer that has dealt with cases like this.

According to the academic Left, racism is defined as "prejudice and power". Since, according to them, society was built to oppress non-Whites, all Whites benefit from the oppression of society and are not only prejudiced due to this mystical miasma of malfeasance, but privileged because some homeless redneck tweaker has more "institutional privilege and power" than Oprah.

They redefined the word "racist" to mean "White person". Since the word "racist" has negative connotations greater than any other term such as mere "prejudice", this means that all White people are more evil than all other non-White people.

Thus, a White person, by mere virtue of existing, is more evil than a non-White person who wants to commit genocide against Whites... if anything the genocidal maniac is considered good for opposing "Whiteness".

And THIS is what is being taught to children from pre-K to post-graduate school.

271 I am something of a prison reformer, I guess. Perhaps intimate experience with the system gives me a glimpse of both sides.

Some systems are better than others. Some wardens do a better job than others.

I think this is one place where spending the right amount of money is crucial. Money to treat the mental illness--because we imprison many psychotic people. Money to give them enough space to have some privacy. Money to find ways to employ them, keep them busy, working. Idle hands are the devil's workshop.

And simple humane things like allowing cards to be mailed, and hugs with visiting family to be exchanged.

I will, speak no more of this for now. I have a very big dog in this fight, but do not want to tell the story. Not yet.

Once the Left makes being white a thought crime, if your existence itself is basically illegal, what's the point in following the law? GREENCASTLE, Ind. (WTHR) - Students concerned about racist messages left on the DePauw University campus disrupted a lecture by actress Jenna Fischer Tuesday night.

About 20 minutes into the program, someone blew a whistle and a group of about 200 African-American students began to talk. An Eyewitness News producer who was at the event said they spoke of racial injustice and not feeling safe on campus.

Fischer, a Fort Wayne native who used to star on NBC's "The Office," was moved by what she was seeing and hearing and didn't stop the protest. She was back in Indiana to speak about her new book, "The Actor's Life: A Survival Guide."

DePauw administrators said in a tweet Tuesday night that police and campus safety officials are investigating racist messages written in campus restrooms and in the DePauw Nature Park, where someone formed the "n-word" in rocks in the park. Officers were also investigating "offensive behavior" exhibited by a student.

A homophobic and anti-Semitic message was also found in a restroom.

303 Winston - I don't think we are going to get on the same page on this. Look, those guys were doing something that *specifically* involved high risk. It was their choice. If there was no risk, they wouldn't have been there.

To say that 'shit happens' is a rationalization that overlooks, or excuses the *known* risk (or ineptitude) of engaging in that behavior.

I roadraced motorcycles for 5 years or so. To have a crash while doing that and declare it in the 'shit happens' category, as though it's just bad luck, is a rationalization. You take high risks long enough and the odds catch up. It isn't a question of 'luck', it's a question of likelihood. Just because it isn't what you were planning doesn't mean it was an 'accident'.

We are subjected to this stuff every year here. Someone tries to walk across a waterfall, or decides to go camping in very bad weather, etc., etc. I weary of it.

Note that I never suggested that rescues should not be mounted, but such require the efforts and resources of others to compensate for the high-risk leisure engagements of others.

Injured or killed while doing such things?, well, I'm sorry to hear that, but it was a personal choice to take the risk. One shouldn't expect sympathy if injured while doing self-satisfying risky things.

315 I had a funny thought about President Trump today, and I just wanted to share it here.

He has never been what you would describe as a doctrinaire conservative. But, he is a highly experienced and very successful CEO.

I think he realized that Ronald Reagan was just about the greatest President we've ever had, and he decided, "I'm gonna do like Reagan did, only better".

He might not have all the same ideological instincts, but he does have the entrepreneurial sense to realize what works and what doesn't. And he realizes, based on that, that strong conservatism in our President works really, really well. So, that's what he's doing!

Because he wants to be the best President we've ever had.

Alas, the power and evil of Fu-Manchu has survived World Wars, communism, fascism, time - everything except the desire for supreme Emperor!

So I was plotting out the serials "The Jade Empire of Fu-Manchu vs. The Serene Republic of the Golden Scalp Weasel."

382 My long time friend, we grew up on neighboring farms, died of a heart attack last Friday. Our families bailed hay, cut silage, walked beans, and helped each other out. Later he and I formed a construction company together and spent almost 40 years working together. I am godfather to his children and he was godfather to mine.

We were brothers of spirit. My world is a bit grey/gray with his passing. But all things must pass. There is a time for everything under the sun. Prays for everyone dealing with the struggle to say goodbye to loved ones. It is never easy. May your sorrow pass and the memories of the good times warm your hearts.

Here's a good history of how Coast Guard Cutters kept getting named for a woman.*

*Miss Lane did excellent service to the Republic by playing official hostess for her uncle. And in her later life she also did so much charitable work that a modern Public Health Service or USCG ward should also be named after her in perpetuity. Not just a cutter; Harriet Lane was a real tomahawk of a woman.

You just do what you've gotta do, take your time. I'll still be here.

There will never be a time when I don't have an extra bourbon or cigar ready at hand for you, either.

I've got one of the best front porches, anywhere. And rocking chairs.

A place for gentleman scholars to imbibe, smolder cigars, revel in memories and tales told tall.

Done right, the time disappears, the day dims to dusk, and then into night. Other cigars are flamed into life, and more bourbon is poured to succor the flames.

The stories told on the porch are sacred, and disappear into the night.

But abide, forever.

Posted by: Adriane the Critical Critic ... at April 18, 2018 02:09 AM (AoK0a)

431 I would say a good speech is understood by the audience, is clear and logical in its message, and is memorable.

A Free will discussion probably needs a lot of pre set definitions so that people don't talk around each other. I would say that people are predictable to an extent. God being all knowing and timeless, knows how all things play out.

Posted by: AmericanKestrel at April 18, 2018 02:14 AM (IDhUW)

432 Free will is an interesting topic but I'll choose not to get into it today. What constitutes a good speech?
I think it's about communicating meaningful thoughts to the audience. The speaker needs to care more about the audience than they care about him. Some speakers want the audience to affirm them. That's wrong, wrong, wrong it's about the people they're talking to.
A good speech comes down to the right words, spoken at the right time to the right people. I might not be a grammar Nazi but precise language matters.
A few minutes too short is much better than a few minutes too long.
But remember beer was involved.

461 Yesterday at lunch listened to Dennis Prager who had on Andrew McCarthy, they were talking about the President Trump investigations. McCarthy while always sure there was no Russian collusion going on and hates Special Councils is worried about this Cohen investigation as he thinks the NY office that did it must have had good evidence to get a judge to agree to warrents to bust into Cohen's home and office. I don't know but am much more cynical that the government isn't manufacturing evidence that really isn't there.

There were several ham fisted scenes in which feminism was artificially shoved in after the fact. The Gene Simmons girl wasn't rescued by Kirk as she should have been. Annoying, but mostly a good flick.
