The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“If we really are committed to honesty in this digital age, we need to be willing to filter information." Jared Colton, Utah State University

Quote II

"At the dinner they basically threw me out when they wanted to talk about confidences. I am not a supporter, I am not a defender of Donald Trump the person, I'm a defender of civil liberties and basic due process." Alan Dershowitz

Quote III

"The most notable feature of a disturbance in your city last summer, was the hanging of some working people by other working people. It should never be so. The strongest bond of human sympathy, outside of the family relation, should be the one uniting all working people, of all nations, of all tongues, and kindreds. Nor should this lead to a war on property, or the owners of property. Property is the fruit of labor -- property is desirable -- is a positive good in the world. That some should be rich, shows that others may become rich and hence is just encouragement to industry and enterprise. Let not him who is houseless pull down the house of another, but let him labor diligently and build one for himself, thus by example assuring that his own shall be safe from violence when built," Abraham Lincoln

Quote IV

“I basically explained to him my whole family dynamic. The thing is, I feel content because I’ve actually gotten a lot done. And I’ve gotten much of what I came here to do done. Not everything, but much of what I wanted to do. And, you know, I feel like I’ve accomplished great things,” Paul Ryan (R-WI)

Normally Tax Day is April 15th. This year it is tomorrow, April 17th. Are you ready? A historical perspective to our tax system.

We are quickly approaching the deadline for filing (and paying) our federal and state income taxes (extended to Tuesday, April 17 this year because April 15 falls on a Sunday and Monday is Emancipation Day), and that means it’s time for my annual post at tax time to help put things in perspective.

1. Some Historical Perspective. “In the beginning” when the US federal income tax was first introduced in 1913, it used to be a lot, lot simpler and a lot easier to file taxes; so easy in fact that it was basically like filling out your federal tax return on a postcard.

For example, page 1 of the original IRS 1040 income tax form from 1913 appears above. There were only four pages in the original 1040 form, including two pages of worksheets, the actual one-page 1040 form above, and only one page of instructions, view all four pages here. In contrast, just the current 1040 instructions for 2017, without any forms or schedules, runs 107 pages (forms and schedules are available separately here and here).

Individual federal income tax rates started at 1% in 1913, and the maximum marginal income tax rate was only 7% on incomes above $500,000 (more than $12.7 million in today’s dollars). The personal exemption in 1913 was $3,000 for individuals (more than $76,000 in today’s dollars) and $4,000 for married couples (nearly $102,000 in today’s dollars), meaning that very few Americans had to pay federal income tax since the average annual income in 1913 was only about $750. The Tax Foundation has historical federal income tax rates for every year between 1913 and 2013 here for tax brackets expressed in both nominal dollars and inflation-adjusted dollars and the 2017 tax brackets here.

Lately Law Enforcement has taken a big hit in the area of public relations. There are two sides to every story. The story presented by a former street cop.

“De-policing should scare the hell out of every American,” Pomper writes. “Especially at this critical time when our enemies, ISIS and other Islamist terrorists – not to mention our own criminals – are, in the truest sense of the phrase, hunting Americans in the streets.” Why, he asks, “would the left engage in something so suicidal as marginalizing police officers at a time like this? Because ideology and politics trump all.” Bingo.

That politically correct ideology – identity politics – is force-fed even to the cops themselves. In Pomper’s own Seattle, for example, under a Race and Social Justice Initiative established several years ago, officers are required to attend social justice day camps where they are lectured about white privilege, minority victimhood, and “how unconsciously (and consciously) racist and bigoted cops are – especially white cops. Don’t even try to argue; to argue also means you are even more racist. The left isn’t interested in your point of view.” Similar programs have been instituted on other major cities across the country.

Vice President Mike Pence. Quiet, unassuming and effective.

Unless you read the Spanish-language tweets, or read all the way to the bottom of U.S. news accounts about the Summit of the Americas, you'd never know what a kickass job Mike Pence did for the U.S. this week in Lima, Peru.

He knocked it out of the park with his lead on Venezuela's moral odiousness and failed democracy and in so doing, brought the rest of the long-reluctant Latin states along with him, stating: “We want one message to be clear: We are with the people of Venezuela.”

I'm guessing that Tim Kaine Who Will Never Be Vice-President of The United States of America would be swapping spit with Nicolas Maduro.

President George W. Bush failed Americans in many ways. The ONT opines that one of his biggest failures was not pardoning Scooter Libby. President Trump has and this is driving some Dems nuts, including one Adam Schiff (D-CA)

You would have to believe that the president picked the Scooter LibbyMark Rich out of a hat, out of the thousands of people seeking a pardon, this was a complete coincidence," Schiff said. "I don't find that the least bit credible."

Funny I don't recall Schiff calling out Hillary while she was Secretary of State or presidential candidate.

Thank you JEF, His past policies contribute to Identify Theft to this day.

Diving deep into the beginnings of DACA, Jan Ting, a law professor at Temple and former assistant commissioner of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, details how the Obama Homeland Security Department (DHS) kept the use of stolen Social Security numbers from being counted against would-be DACA applicants.

As he shows, the promise to forgive the crime, one that is pervasive among illegal aliens, was consciously designed to incentivize DACA-eligible “dreamers” — for the never-passed Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act — to come out of the shadows and apply for the program.

Participation trophies. Microaggressions. Now doypacks. Straight-to-pan plastic pouches.

A supermarket is to introduce touch-free packaging to help squeamish millennials who are afraid to touch raw meat before cooking it.

Sainsburys said it was bringing in the straight-to-pan plastic pouches, which are known in the industry as "doypacks", after a survey showed the prospect of coming into contact with uncooked meat products induced high levels of anxiety among shoppers under the age of 35.

So baiting their own hooks and filleting their catch is out of the question?

Meet the new science same as the old science.

Sixty six years ago, experts used the exact same words.

Dr. William S. Carlson, an Arctic expert, said last night that Polar icecaps were melting at an astonishing and unexplained rate and threatening to swamp seaports by raising ocean levels.

“The glaciers of Norway and Alaska,” he said, “are only half the size they were 50 years ago.”

Starbucks, a righteous lib business looks like they are guilty of racial profiling. Two African-Americans arrested for hanging out at a Philadelphia Starbucks.

Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson issued a statement late Saturday apologizing for the apparent racially motivated arrest of two black customers at the behest of a Starbucks manager in Philadelphia. The two men, according to reports, were waiting for a friend inside a Starbucks store, but were asked to leave because they had not yet made a purchase.

Staff then reportedly called police, who arrived and arrested the men for trespassing. The arrest was captured on video by another customer who attested the men had done nothing wrong. Subsequent reports indicate the two men were real estate developers waiting to meet an investor.

This guy doesn't qualify for a Genius Award Winner but the Dumb F*ck Award. David Buckel.

An environmental activist committed suicide on Saturday in a park in Brooklyn, New York, by setting himself on fire.

The man was protesting the use of "fossil fuel" — which he said was leading to an environmental disaster in the world — when he poured gasoline on himself and burned himself to death in Prospect Park.

"David Buckel, 60, left behind a charred corpse and a typed suicide note that said he was burning himself to death using 'fossil fuel' to reflect how mankind was likewise killing itself, police sources said," reported the New York Post.

There are right ways and wrong ways to hijack public transit. Genius Award Winners.

A naked man on a train and a knife-wielding man’s attempt to steal a bus made for an interesting 12 hours, but Metro leaders assure the public that they’re an anomaly.

Overall statistics for the most serious crimes on the rail and bus system, they said, are down to the lowest level in at least a decade.
Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld also responded Thursday to concerns from riders that another sexual assault on a Metro train was kept quiet a few weeks ago.

In all three incidents, Wiedefeld emphasized, the men now charged with the crimes were quickly arrested.

Strangers help a man and his best friend. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

It took a Facebook group, a search team and a lot of patience, but a Collinsville man and his emotional support dog were finally reunited, three weeks after they were separated by a car crash.

Summer, a miniature Australian Shepherd, was ejected from the car during a crash with her owner, Andre Wild, on March 17 in Collinsville. Summer ran into the woods near Morrison Avenue and St. Clair Avenue before police could catch her and since then, hundreds of metro-east residents have been on the look-out or actively searching for her.

35 The Starbucks thing has smelled to me from the beginning. First, the video released was recorded by a woman named Lauren, who wanted to remain anonymous. Then, the guys' attorney was named Lauren. Lauren claimed that she overheard two unidentified white women were there claim to have been loitering and using the facilities without buying anything.

Then, the video itself was posted by a woman named Melissa DePino, who claimed it was given to her by a friend.

Andrew Yaffe, the "friend" the two guys were waiting for, is also person friends with Lauren Wimmer.

Lauren Wimmer is currently following Andrew Yaffe and Melissa DePino on twitter.

No. I work deep down the rabbit hole of DC so I tend to take all information with a grain of salt. Possibly more grains if needed. The thing to remember about our current age is that no matter what you read, see on TV, or hear on the radio, its MUCH worse than you think; but I'm a world class pessimist. I like Jack Straw's posts. That doesn't make it an endorsement.

96 I just thought of something... you all know about the bogus reporting about Cohen being in Prague in August '16 to meet with Russian agents? And remember that it was debunked that it was actually another Michael Cohen with the same birth year that traveled to Prague? That mix up seems like a clue to me. If what a lot of us have come to believe, that this was a misinformation campaign by Fusion GPS, then it seems reasonable to suspect whoever came up with that Prague bullshit had access to the border/customs database that placed the other Cohen as being in Prague in 08/2016. I think this fabricator assumes it was Trump's guy and thought "a ha!! This gives me a way to put someone from Trump and the others mentioned in meeting together." Then they went on to pass the story on to Steele, knowing FBI could verify that those people were in Prague at the time, but nothing more, or less, about the alleged meeting. Am I on to something here?

I don't care about touching raw meat once I get it home. But, I am in favor of non-leaky packages when it comes to meat. Don't like picking up a package of chicken in the supermarket and having my hand end up covered in juices. Or having the package leak all over the rest of my groceries. Or having in leak in the fridge and drip down on other stuff.

But, that part about being able to go straight from the package to the pan without touching the meat sounds like the fears of a great big sissy reporter.

227 The personal exemption in 1913 was $3,000 for individuals (more than $76,000 in today's dollars)

I'm not sure whose ass they pull these "monetary equivalences" out of ... but the average house in 1913 cost something less than $3,400 and I think it costs tons more than $76,000 today, so the $3,000 personal deduction in 1913 was a hell of a lot more than just $76,000 today.

Yes ... I know they use the deflator to figure out relative monetary equivalences, but this just shows how totally off those measures are. Even in the article he states that the average income in 1913 was only about $750, so the deduction was 4 times the average income. The average income these days is around $60,000, so the comparison that way checks in at a personal deduction of almost $250,000 ... about the median price of a home these days.

The official deflator and inflation rates are such total bullshit as to be nothing but useless.

Absolutely. You can't just sit in a cafe without ordering something. If you want to sit in Starbucks then you have to, at least, order one of their small $6 coffee-style drinks. Those guys had no right to sit in the Starbucks if they weren't buying something.

297 Part of problem with Starbucks is apparently nobody at the company knows the actual policy, so whether you have to buy something, how often, whether you can use the restroom without buying something... it all depends on who's working that store.

That's bad corporate management, and an invitation for a lawsuit. You have to make sure all your manager (at least) know the corporate policy and enforce it on an evenhanded basis. Otherwise all a plaintiff has to do is show instances of other people who didn't get kicked out.

Jack ain't leading you anywhere.

The info is available. Consertive Treehouse is one place to get a run down.

Attitudes arise w/ conculsion of investigations. Some say nothing will happen, some say something will happen. Either way it will get pretty sporty.

Thoughts should be directed as to what you will do in either of these situations.

Found a gut shot deer (which is bad practice since the deer suffers more than it needs to)one year while hunting. Waited by it for a reasonable time to make sure who ever shot it wasn't going to find it. Field dressing a gut shot deer sucks . Please hunters practice shooting and sighting in your gun before hunting season.

363 The Starbucks bathroom policy reeeeeally depends on location. The ones in small cities orsuburbs or residential neighborhoods usually don't have locks on the restrooms and don't monitor patrons too closely. The downtown and urbanones, though, have so much traffic and so many freeloaders that you have to use a keypad to get in and the code is printed on the receipt. And if you're not buying, they'll kick you out of a table to make room for actual customers.

Posted by: thathalfrican - Stay Woke! - Leigon of Gloom founding memeber/too sweet at April 16, 2018 11:38 PM (IYHxL)

There's no browsing in a cafe. Either you're in line looking at the selection or you're at a table. It's not like you're walking through a book store or something.

And they have cafes in bookstores where you still have to buy coffee to sit down with a book.

In cafes, if you don't make people buy stuff then it takes all of 3 minutes for all of your tables to be occupied by non-customers. Chess players can take over any number of tables for the entire day - every single day. Others have their own shtick.

It's just common knowledge that you can't just hang out at a cafe. If you're waiting for someone and don't want to buy anything then don't sit at a table or at the bar. Stand. And wait.

Perfectly OK to hang at a restaurant or other private place, however if you don't leave when the owner says to leave they call the cops on you for tresspassing.

Unless you are protected, a special category preferred over the owner, or related to/otherwise making a profit for the mayor, I suppose.

If I'm waiting to meet someone, I'll stand near the door so I'm out of the way and not in line. If you're not taking up space or getting in the way of paying customers, I don't know of many places that wouldn't let you just stand there pretty much indefinitely.

++++

I'd say it's one of those situational things. If the place is packed with not enough seats for everyone who wants one, then management isn't going to want its paying customers having to stand or leave, while a couple of guys waiting for a friend take up space. Or, if the joint has problems with the homeless coming in and hanging around all day, they might decide they just want the paying customers.

On the other hand, hypothetically, if the white guys can go in there and wait for friend and nobody says boo, while when the black guys do the same, they suddenly break out the paying customers only policy, I can see how the black guys might be irked.

439 Serious Cat - if you're still here - Sundance at CTH actually thinks the (apparently immortal, zombiefied) claim about Cohen in Prague is a key, concrete example that confirms improper use of the NSA's 702 query system. That system was accessed by contractors, with permission - contractors turned out to be Dem-linked operatives/companies.

Anyway, since it turned out "wrong Cohen," there is a desire/need for the bad guys to find/manufacture some alternative way (not NSA database) in which a Michael Cohen's presence in Prague (included as a fact in the "dossier") would have become known. To conceal/obfuscate the improper access to either the 702 system, or whatever DOJ/FBI access GPS might have managed.

You can be trespassed off/out of anywhere, even if you are a paying customer. And if you refuse to leave, cops come and enforce the lawful request, and then you refuse lawful orders, you can and should be arrested (and it is out of the proprietor's hands at that point).

Now whether businesses should make such decisions given the potential for fallout and financial risk, that is another story.

Sadly, I have no fucks to give for Starbucks, even though they appear to have been within their legal rights.

456 Maybe to solve Islamic violence we need to give them a circus, like Ringling Bros. In America, if a child is unhappy with his family and community, he runs away and joins the circus. What fun, what adventure.

But when this happens in the Muslim world, his only option is to join the Taliban, ISIS or Al Qaeda. Just think, if we gave them circuses, instead of terrorists we'd have Muslim trapeze artists, lion tamers, clowns and acrobats. No more exploding terrorists trying to come here and kill us. It's a theory, and I think it's worthy of a grant.

459 Bavaria logging tried using aerostats (tethered blimps) for getting logs off of extremely steep terrain instead of using a skyline or cable drag because of the erosion and compaction issues that would have on the Oregon Coast range.

In the first attempt to do this, the plan was to bring the aerostats in by truck and have the loggers unroll them, like a crew unrolling a giant carpet, and then the techs would inflate them with Helium while the riggers would shackle them up in preparation to start them in pulling the logs down instead of using a traditional dragline.

The second try they got the logger to take off their cork boots before rolling out the aerostats

Sainsburys said it was bringing in the straight-to-pan plastic pouches, which are known in the industry as "doypacks", after a survey showed the prospect of coming into contact with uncooked meat products induced high levels of anxiety among shoppers under the age of 35.

then why can't I paint you
the words will never show
the you I've come to know

If a face could launch a thousand ships
then where am I to go
there's no one home but you
you're all that's left me to

And when my love for life is running dry
you come and pour yourself on me

If a man could be two places at one time
I'd be with you
tomorrow and today
beside you all the way

If the world should stop revolving, spinning
slowly, and I to die
I'd spend the end with you
and when the world was through
then one by one the stars would all go out
then you and I would simply fly away

506 Three ways to be of help to the cops:

1) Maybe if cities stopped using them to collect revenue from the citizenry...(and yes, PDs DO have a quota system, even if the PDs themselves are forbidden from having them as in TX. City budgets in many, if not all, places assume X amount of revenue coming in from traffic tickets, putting the cops in the position of filling that void.)
2) A heavily armed citizenry. This will give the police fewer crimes to investigate, which leads to...
3) Let's stop giving the police more to do than their #1 role: the investigation of crime.

And maybe we will also wind up with fewer cops in the long run.

(None of these will happen: both the police and governments are addicted to one thing: POWER. But a boy can dream.)

517 I knoe a thing or two about Mrs. Butterworth. Interesting story!

Mary Butterworth was married with six kids back in the colonial days here in America. Her husband left her and the kids, just disappearing into the ether like you could do back then.

She turned to counterfeiting money to make ends meet!

She was caught., and brought before a judge. He took pity on her, being abandoned to raise six kids by herself, so he basically let her off with a warning, but promised he would not be so kind if she came to his court again as a defendant.

She took his warning to heart, and became a caterer instead.

Her company would go on to become famous for counterfeit syrup, rather than counterfeit money.

Harry was the street magician before David Blaine or Chris Angel were housebroken. He had a great patter and supposedly really did run a con game on the streets as a teenager.

The trick that stuck with me was also from SNL. He was doing something with a tube and glass ketchup bottles. He has a brown paper grocery bag on a table and pulls out 3 glass bottles, sets them on the table and mumbles something about, "I don't need this one right now." He puts one of the bottles back in the paper bag. Then crumples it up as if it were empty and throws it away continuing without a pause like nothing happened. It was a split second, subtle thing, but he was good at that.

569 Crap. That's awful. Join a gym, man. "

I've been in gyms, used to hike a lot. Biked a lot at one point, then got away from it, now getting back to it. Thing is, throughout my entire life, nothing I have ever done, good or bad, has ever made even the tiniest bit of difference in where it's set. That's the speed it wants to run at, apparently that was the speed it's built to run at. If it's true that you only get so many heartbeats before it wears out, well I guess I'll probably have to get a new one some day. Or maybe I"ll just be greatful that all of my troubles are finally over.

and it's not all bad - everyone who knows me has always remarked that I seem to have a metabolism that runs at about twice the rate of most people. I imagine the two are related.

584 Advent speakers.

I lost a sterling pair of Advent Heritage tower speakers in the '99 divorce.

Hands down, still the best value in sound, size, power, range and price that I've ever owned.

Certain Wharfdale models approach that standard in all but price.

Second best speakers I've owned?

Built them in the '70s, with an 8 in. driver, 10 in. passive reflector and 2" tweeter, with Realistic crossover circuit. Made the cabinets myself at the Lackland AFB wood shop.

Later, I upgraded by adding titanium ribbion speakers, in series with the 2" conventional tweeters.

Opened up the speakers like a shot of Afrin to the nose.

Back when Hi-Fi and mid-fi....was a hobby and a sport, accessible by we mere mortals.

Not so much nowdays, other than the vintage hobby.

Soul played one of the mad dog bank robbers involved in the 1984 Miami shootout with the FBI, and he was extraordinarily good. That performance always stuck with me and I always wondered why Soul didn't end up a bigger name than he did.
