Posted by: josephistan at April 18, 2018 09:44 AM (7HtZB)
That is very rare. To be a female painter then you had to be related to one, because your relations would be the only one to teach you. Painting was still considered a craft (although it was becoming more during the Renaissance) and therefore a social role for men, and it was believed that women were just physically incapable of genius. To be recognized as a painter, a woman had to be unquestionably good where no one could reasonably deny her skill.

Well, let's test the ol' memory cells for high school Latin...

Grati would be thanks or gratitude in some form.
Animi has to do with life or mind
Ergo has always been "therefore"
Effin - everyone on the blog knows this one
Xit - a personal pronoun for the alternately-gendered, which certainly applies to the fellow in the painting.

Therefore, "I thank, therefore f him."

It may lose something in the translation.

Also, her work shows a natural look, not the sometimes stilted or wooden expressions I've seen in other portraits of the period.

Galizia did many portraits which showed her great ability to paint detail more than today's example. And I really enjoy her still life paintings. They show a naturalistic look that makes me wonder if they inspired the style of the Dutch Masters that followed a century or more later.

Those squatters had a solid real estate plan after all. They've turned Starbuck's property into their own rent-free office and will probably get a huge closing check.

"Some of the main heroes in the ghetto, on a par with the Panthers even, were the Blackstone Rangers in Chicago. The Rangers were so bad, the Rangers so terrified the whole youth welfare poverty establishment, that in one year, 1968, they got a $937,000 grant from the Office of Economic Opportunity in Washington. The Ranger leaders became job counselors in the manpower training project, even though most of them never had a job before and weren't about to be looking for one. ...In San Francisco the champions were the Mission Rebels. The Rebels got every kind of grant you could think of, from the government, the foundations, the churches, individual sugar daddies, from everywhere, plus a headquarters building and poverty jobs all over the place. The police would argue that in giving all that money to gangs like the Blackstone Rangers the poverty bureaucrats were financing criminal elements and helping to destroy the community. The poverty bureaucrats would argue that they were doing just the opposite. They were bringing the gangs into the system."--Tom Wolfe, "Mau-Mauing the Flak Catchers", 1970

366 We visited the cathedral at Wells, in Somerset, way out past Stonehenge. Wells is Britain's smallest cathedral town, and it's just a village.

The exterior of the building was done with niches for statuary of the saints, maybe three or four tiers up, maybe higher. The uppermost ones are maybe four or five stories up, distance-wise.

Up to maybe the third tier of niches, the statues are all wrecked, the heads knocked off, the torsos armless, many gone down to the ankles. Cromwell's puritans did it, heavily armed men on horseback, using lances and poles.

The Jewish experience under the Spanish Inquisition was anything but pedestrian. When it was over there were pretty much no Jews left in Spain - not counting the forcibly converted Marranos.

Of course, Jewish expulsions in Europe were nothing new and nothing rare. The forced conversions were a slight modification of European tradition, though.

I would think that it would be tough for any plague to take out that many Indians, pre-contact, since they so sparsely populated the Americas. When the Europeans came they were the only ones really mobile all over the land.

Of course, the Europeans had, themselves, just experienced a huge die-out from Plague just a century and change before ... but that served to actually strengthen and refine Europe, mostly.

as far as plague goes, if there was one before Columbus (I haven't heard of it) I would blame Portuguese explorers. It is pretty well known now that the Portuguese were aware of land areas to the west. they didn't know it was a full continent and they didnt make permanent settlement.

As I understand it, diseases unwittingly brought by the Spanish made their way among the rather extensive trade networks of the time. The tribes encountered by the English et al. were the remnants of the complete collapse of the cultures that had existed scant generations before. I think the confluence of individual rights, strong property rights, intellectual curiosity (George Washington inoculated his army against smallpox; Ben Franklin) and fighting for a secure frontier settlement made the difference.

Certainly the founders were a special group. Even King George III was amazed at Washington returning to Mount Vernon.

Well, the Koran says there is to be NO compulsion under religion. NONE.

Unless you are an idolator. Or you want to leave Islam. Or you want to make fun of Mohammed. Or you don't want to pay the unbeliever tax. Or if you are married to a Muslim but don't want to raise your kids Muslim.

You see, Mohammed, in addition to being the first feminist, was also the first libertarian! And social progressive!

There's been speculation among perfectly respectable historians that various European fishermen had been harvesting off the coast of North America for quite some time but keeping it quiet so as to reduce competition.

The Re-Education Menu:

Dalrymple: "In my study of communist societies, I came to the conclusion that the purpose of communist propaganda was not to persuade or convince, nor to inform, but to humiliate; and therefore, the less it corresponded to reality the better. When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all their sense of probity. To assent to obvious lies is to co-operate with evil, and in some small way to become evil oneself. One's standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control."

Fun fact, we don't know exactly why Gonorrhea is called the clap, but one theory is based on an old method of treatment. Apparently they thought emptying the penis of pus and discharge would help, so they would smash Mr Happy between two heavy books to do so.

It's funny how the anti-smoking lefties never have anything to say about Indians. They are happy to blame whitey for perfectly normal stuff from 400 years ago and they are happy to try and sue every white guy who ever had anything to do with tobacco (other than the Gore family) but they never have one word to say about Indians and tobacco, even as they claim that tobacco is the greatest evil the world has ever encountered.

418 As I understand it, diseases unwittingly brought by the Spanish made their way among the rather extensive trade networks of the time.

A different theory is overcrowded areas in Mexico & part south facilitated the spread of hantavirus.

This is based on recent re-evaluation of Spanish archives written by missionaries who learned to speak native languages. The Indians used different words for tuberculosis than the rapid decline now thought to be hantavirus.
