The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“You know, maybe I don’t need to say this because it’s pretty obvious: we are living in challenging times. We’re living through a war on truth, facts, and reason. Watching as racists and white supremacist views are lifted up in the media and in the White House.”Hillary Clinton

Quote II

“The Conservative does not despise government. He despises tyranny. This is precisely why the Conservative reveres the Constitution and insists on adherence to it.” Mark R. Levin

Quote III

“Liberals, it has been said, are generous with other peoples' money, except when it comes to questions of national survival when they prefer to be generous with other peoples' freedom and security.” William F. Buckley Jr.

Quote IV

“Faith is not the belief that God will do what you want. It is the belief that God will do what is right.” Max Lucado

Quote V

Here are two, not only different, but incompatible things, called by the same name, liberty. And it follows that each of the things is, by the respective parties, called by two different and incompatible names, liberty and tyranny. The shepherd drives the wolf from the sheep's throat, for which the sheep thanks the shepherd as a liberator, while the wolf denounces him for the same act as the destroyer of liberty, especially as the sheep was a black one. Plainly the sheep and the wolf are not agreed upon a definition of the word liberty." Abraham Lincoln

Lincoln was murdered this day 1865.

Will 100,000 square feet be enough to grow 4.5 million pounds of greens annually? Firms are betting on vertical planting to do so.

For as long as I can remember, people have been hyping vertical farming — growing crops indoors, using vertical space to intensify production.

Its virtues, relative to conventional agriculture, have long been clear. Indoors, the climate can be controlled year-round. Pests can be minimized, and with them pesticides. Water and nutrients can be applied in precise quantities. By going up rather than out, a vertical farm can produce more food per acre of land. And by siting close to an urban area, it can reduce long distribution chains, getting fresher food to customers’ tables, quicker.

Its drawbacks have become equally clear. They mainly come down to cost. Farming well requires deep know-how and expertise; it has proven extraordinarily difficult to expand vertical farms in a way that holds quality consistent while driving costs down. Optimizing production at a small scale is very different from doing so at a large scale. The landscape is littered with the corpses of vertical-farming startups that thought they could beat the odds (though several are still alive and kicking)

April 14, 1945, Born on this day, English guitarist and songwriter Ritchie Blackmore from Deep Purple, who had the 1970 UK No.2 single 'Black Night' and the 1973 US No.4 single 'Smoke On The Water'. Deep Purple were listed in the 1975 Guinness Book of World Records as "the globe's loudest band" for a 1972 concert at London's Rainbow Theatre. Blackmore later formed Rainbow who had the 1981 hit single 'I Surrender'. via thisdayinmusic.com

April 15, 1967, Nancy Sinatra and Frank Sinatra started a four week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Somethin' Stupid'. They became the only father and daughter act ever to score a No.1 single. UB40 singer Ali Cambell covered the song in 1995 with his daughter Kibbi. Robbie Williams had a 2001 UK No.1 with his version of the song featuring Nicole Kidman. via thisdayinmusic.com

The nice thing about the free market is the fact you have free choice. If you don't care for a product you don't have to use it. But of course the left isn't satisfied with that. They have to vilify and demonize products they don't care for.

On Friday, The New Yorker honed in on a serious threat to the lives of all New Yorkers: the arrival of Chick-Fil-A in their homey little corner of the universe. In a 1400-word diatribe titled “Chick-Fil-A’s Creepy Infiltration of New York City,” one Dan Piepenring wrote that New Yorkers should not accept the intrusion of a popular restaurant serving chicken because the owner happens to be a religious Christian. “The air smelled fried,” Piepenring wrote, ominously. “New York has taken to Chick-fil-A…And yet the brand’s arrival here feels like an infiltration, in no small part because of its pervasive Christian traditionalism.” What signs are there of this incipient theocracy? Its Atlanta corporate headquarters – not its New York store or any of its other stores – has Bible verses and a statue of Jesus, and its stores close on Sundays. That’s it.

After a tragedy the solution is always to throw more money at "the problem". The murders at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida were not caused by a lack of money or of modern technology. Various government agencies let those killed and wounded down.

Hermosa Elementary in Artesia, New Mexico will be installing gunshot detection devices.

School districts in New Mexico have begun installing advanced gunshot-detection devices in the wake of February’s Parkland school shooting.

Used by the military to detect snipers and missiles, and police in Chicago and Baltimore to deter gun violence, gunshot-detection devices are becoming a popular tool to save lives—and, now, a reminder of the potential violence facing America’s students.

Hermosa Elementary in Artesia, New Mexico, received a free pilot installation of the devices in April. The sensors, each roughly the size of a pack of gum, are attuned to the specific audio signatures of gunfire. Sharp enough to distinguish between real gunshots and firecrackers or other loud noises, the sensors also transmit the location of gunfire they detect.

What good is a gun shot detection device if the stationed police officer sits on his/her ass and allows the shooting to continue?

WWII collaborator girls.

It’s 1942 and the Germans occupy and dominate the vast majority of Europe. They were there, on the scene, and the local men either were not (dead, in prison camps, in hiding) or were greatly diminished in status. Like soldiers of every army of every period of history, as soon as the Germans got comfortable, they started scouting around for women. And, as always in times of military occupation, there were willing women to be found.

There is an old saying, "Crime doesn't pay." And in this case it didn't.

A GoFundMe fundraiser for a German shepherd puppy’s emergency surgery reportedly received nearly 700 donations over 28 days, totaling $14,065. But police now say the dog’s owner intentionally caused the injuries and GoFundMe has promised to refund the donors. The 5-month-old dog, Atlas, died on February 3rd.

When the dog’s owner, 24-year-old Reid M. Herjo, was stopped by police in Medford, New Jersey in January, Herjo said that Atlas needed to go to the vet after being hit by an ATV, according to the Courier-Post. But a few days after police pulled him over, they got a tip that Herjo had harmed the dog on purpose, leading them to open an investigation.

Special place in hell for this person.

John Boehner and his tears left Congress. He's back in the news and appears to be a new man with new beliefs.

A metaphor that can capture the dramatic about-face performed this week by John Boehner—the hard-core conservative former Speaker of the House of Representatives, who’s now on the board of a legal marijuana company—may not exist.

A Koch brother renouncing petroleum and living a carbon-neutral life. Richard Spencer at a Black Lives Matter march. Steve Bannon on the steering committee of the local Democratic Socialists of America. A metamorphosis, a one-eighty.

Whatever. The description isn’t nearly as important as the forensics, and the meaning. This, you see, is a trend piece.

Hard core conservative? Hardly.

Unless you have been living under a rock you have heard of Laura Ingraham’s little brouhaha with the anti-gun teenager, David Hogg. Several advertisers dropped their support. Laura came out swinging and it looks like she has recovered one of her sponsors.

Ace Hardware has resumed advertising on Laura Ingraham’s Fox News show after initially saying it would pull advertising.

A spokesperson for Ace Hardware had told The Wrap last week that it did “not have any plans to nationally advertise on Ingraham’s show in the future.”

However, a company spokeswoman backtracked on that statement in an email to The Hill Friday. The development was first reported by The Wrap.

A woman died after her German doctor lover allegedly sprinkled cocaine on his penis before she gave him oral sex.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Andreas Niederbichler, 42, was charged after the woman collapsed and died in February.

The Daily Mail reported that she was rushed from the doctor’s home in Halberstadt, southeast of Hanover, after consensual oral sex.

One good deed leads to another. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

An anonymous restaurant patron is being hailed for causing a ripple effect of kindness after he paid for a hockey team’s dinner tab earlier this week.

The Barracudas are a midget team for the Dartmouth Whalers Minor Hockey Association. Every year at the end of the season, the youngsters raise money for a celebratory dinner and give the rest of the funds to charity.

This year, they planned on donating their excess charity money to a fundraiser that was created for the Humboldt Broncos.

Copy addys from the spreadsheet & paste 'em into mail you're fixin' to send.

162 On the "fun side" of watching your Dad die, at least he gets to eat whatever he wants over here.

Mom's caring, but tyrannical approach has been to cut his diet and piss-off an unstable individual.

He's happy as a pig in shit over here and just forgets everything I told him five minutes earlier.

He also "semi-wrecked" my car when I was at work the other day. Thus... insurance. It covers idiots.

Just went downstairs and he's up and in my cupboards again. Like a teenager, he "forages" in a target-rich environment.

Cookies? --gone
Candy? --gone
Lunch meat? --gone

He always wants pizza. He doesn't make the DiGiornos out of my garage freezer, but that day may come. Dude could burn water. He is from Cleveland, after all.

Yeah, I'm still strong. I'll take it as it comes and I'll try to comfort my Mom as much as possible. She's taken the brunt of it and I'm like this Moron Referee with flags to be thrown on occasion.

166 Well going back to binge watching Usagi Drop. Not a single tentacle to be spied, so Kurt Eichmannwald won't get excited/flip out.

Daisuke is your average 30yr old salaryman who works late, has no life, and now his mother's father has passed away peacefully at the age of 87. He gets to the funeral and everyone is acting like there's a ghost about. The ghost being this cute little 6yr old girl named Rin. It seems grandad had an affair and the mother has vanished. While everyone else in the family is trying to shirk any responsibility Daisuke man's up and takes responsibility for the girl even though she is his aunt.

The story that follows is sweet, funny, tearful slices of life moments as Daisuke finally finds there is something more important than work. And her name is Rin.

At the end of one episode, Daisuke wonders. "Am I raising Rin or is she raising me?"

One daughter committed suicide.

Another daughter will probably have to live at home for the rest of her life because she is bipolar. Found out tonight that she stopped taking her medicine a couple of months ago, despite assurances that she was taking it.

This same daughter cannot be trusted to be left alone with our youngest daughter - the one with Down syndrome - because she verbally abuses her, and we are afraid of what she might do if we are not around.

And monster that I am, I can't keep myself from asking God why he couldn't have taken DD#3 instead of DD#2.

But she wasn't snorting it, so I think the tolerance for it is a lot higher if it's going into the stomach. And how much coke could Fritz fit on his dick, anyway? Is he the German John Holmes? And, even then, I really don't think she would just drop dead from doing the coke.

This story just strikes me as extremely unlikely and there is definitely a bunch of information missing from it.

Dean responded by saying not only didn't he write Blind Ambition, he had never even read it. Dean eventually dismissed his complaint.

200 The artificial sweeteners and other chemicals currently used in diet soda are safe for most people, and there's no credible evidence that these ingredients cause cancer.

Posted by: ALH at April

The danger of artificial sweeteners isn't that they cause cancer, it's that they trick your body into thinking they are sugar, and they aren't, so your body reacts oddly to them. A good deal of the rampant diabetes we keep hearing about might well be due to the use of artificial sweeteners (some worse than others).

Personally, I never use artificial sweeteners because I think they taste like shit.

I agree with you about the actual animals, but making Liberal heads explode is a hobby i rarely get to enjoy, so I have to be prepared for targets of opportunity.

For example, several years back now, some barely 20 something pasty chick was expounding on vegetarianism while a group of us were out smoking at work. She pointed out that cows' digestion creates tons of greenhouse gases. Before I could even stop myself I said, "Wow, that's terrible. Thank God we killed off all the buffalo."

I thought her head was gonna do a full 360, exorcist style.

As for Pandas, do you think it'd be possible for a good taxidermist to bleach or dye a black bear mount to appear to be a panda? I would pay some decent money for that.

But someone out there read and has some comments on the McCabe release from Friday.

Not a good look for those that love them some DotFed.
twitter.com/NameRedacted7/status/985570434841235456

4. Within the first six pages, it's detailed what McCabe told investigators at each date & time, & relevant data regarding phone calls w DOJ officials, his aide Special Counsel Lisa Page, Dir Comey, & Dep Asst Dir Peter Strzok. Dates are noted.

5. The report first describes mccabes lack of Candor. This is the act of not telling the complete truth, leaving out details, deliberately lying about details, or hiding key facts.

6. Within the first six pages, it is explicitly clear that McCabe verbally ordered page, & Asst Director for Office Public Affairs to seek out WSJ Devlin Barrett, in attempt to shift the reporters narrative to one less damaging to McCabe PERSONALLY.

387 I only tried coke once 40 years ago at the urging of a long gone girlfriend - I understand why a certain type of personality, extroverts who are very fixated on what other people think would get addicted to it quickly, since it has the effect of giving users a huge boost (unwarranted of course) to their self confidence. No wonder performers go for it so much.

I'm not that kind of personality, and that kind of boost held no special attraction for me, so I never did it after that.

It's more along the lines of pay your $150 a night house fee for the right to get naked in front of strangers to make tips.

If at the end of the night the girl hasn't made the $150 house fee, then there are other options.......

437 a couple thoughts on your lament, Insomniac, that you wasted so many years doing what you thought you were supposed to be doing:

First thought: I have made big mistakes with people close to me over the years, but it's something of a relief to look back and realize that the biggest ones were not when I thought was doing something I knew was wrong, but when I thought I was doing something right. But I wasn't. All you can ever ask of yourself is that you do the best you can at the time, and sometimes our best still turns out to be pretty crappy. That's just how life goes.

Second thought - if you really really regret those years, though, it's possible you were living up to what someone else thought you should be doing, and not being true to yourself. Of course during my education I had heard "To thine own self be true" countless times, but I was well into adulthood before suddenly one day I started to understand what that really meant. It takes a lot of time to figure that one out, and you may still be on the path. But things get a lot better once you get that one straight.

as the song put it, "Well I'm alright, now; I learned my lesson well. Ya can't please everyone, so ya got to please yourself."

Yeah, that's my Mk.1, v2 Skeleton Storage Facility. I've some overflow spaces under option, too.

I do have one unique skill though as regards such.

The ability to never tell anyone about anything, ever, insofar as the Secrets of the Skeletons.

War stories, escapades as kids... those are different, and I'll regale with a tale of an epic Gold Wing ride, the sailboat in a storm or what have you.

Growing up the spawn of a Career Submariner, I learned a bit about the nature of Classifications, Need to Know and Authorized Access.

I've got my info so highly classified, that GPS birds can't even put a number to it's grid. You'd have to try to find it on Google Not Of This Earth. And you'd fail.

And the Access List is comprised of One. Me. There will never be a second code issued.

That's the failing most people have with their most closely held secrets. They seem compelled to share them with someone, sometime along the way.

Take your secrets with you to your grave. They'll keep you better company than your ex ever will.

I only tried coke once 40 years ago at the urging of a long gone
girlfriend - I understand why a certain type of personality, extroverts
who are very fixated on what other people think would get addicted to it
quickly, since it has the effect of giving users a huge boost
(unwarranted of course) to their self confidence. No wonder
performers go for it so much.

I'm not that kind of personality, and that kind of boost held no special attraction for me, so I never did it after that.

Musicians fall into the trap of the next big thrill. They say you can only go up from here. Well, where do you go when there is no more "up"? Serious question, just where the hell do you go when you have gotten to do all the shit you only read about, and its all fucking true. When those thrills become old hat, and you think you are a god, where the hell do you go from there? I never had those illusions, I just loved playing fast and loud, and it never got boring, so it was always a thrill, but I saw others that just had to keep reaching, and started to believe in their own omnipotence. They crashed and burned bad. The funny thing is I saw it happen on every level, but it always seemed to happen once they believed in their own omnipotence. In many cases its not that they needed a huge boost to their confidence, but that they had waaaay too much to start with

One example. I had a friend who was living hard. He was in a band, nothing big, just a local band. He was talking one night, about how they got trashed, this drug, that drug, and how it was a great night because 30 people showed up to this show, so naturally they had to "hang around and do the rock star thing".
I said 30 people? I remember when we had 30 people carrying gear, WTF is 30 people? Then it dawned on me, he was on that path. He lived off the power and the glory, and set the bar so damn low that 30 people to him meant he was god, and after you become god, where the fuck do you go from there?

I think that's been the way for a long time. The club doesn't hire girls. At most they'll have an amateur night with a prize to entice new girls to come and try to entice them to come back. Being on the customer side I've seen clubs with various ways of dealing with girls paying the house fees and dj and bouncer payouts. I always found fascinating the ones that are keeping track of private dances vs. ones that don't.

in recovery, people still want to be superhuman. talk about 'finding their true purpose' etc, and then finally, accept that they're human, and that their best occupation is helping others get clean.

513 ...I took a legal ethics course once upon a time, taught by a sitting Federal Judge. (who was also one of the most astoundingly intelligent men I've ever met - true photographic memory) At one point he gave all of us the same advice you just gave, almost word for word.

He also said that he had lost count of how many people he had seen, intelligent people who should have known better, who wrecked their lives by talking when all that they had to do was Shut Up.

Posted by: Tom Servo at April 16, 2018 12:03 AM (V2Yro)

Federal Judge Joseph Leonard, by any chance?

I testified before him on a few occasions as a young Airman 1st Class USAF cop, having effected apprehensions of civilians for drug offenses on a Federal Facility (Lackland A.F.B., TX).

He pretty much used the same distillation of words, which *ahem* have stuck with me over the ensuing decades.

Made all the more poignant, in that Judge Woods was assassinated by one Charles Harrelson, who is now serving a hard Live Sentence in a Federal Ultra-Max, somewhere.

That "Charles Harrelson", is the father of the actor you all know as "Woody Harrelson", dopehead extraordinaire.

The John Woods Federal Courthouse, on the grounds of Hemisfair '68, in San Antonio, TX, is named after the late Judge.

May he Rest in Peace. He was a giant of a man, in life and on the Bench.

But I also have a low tolerance for some kinds of risk. Drugs fell into several unacceptable categories:

Weed and other stuff you'd smoke: never smoked. Smoking just kind of grosses me out.

Scary drugs: cocaine, heroin, meth.

Fun-sounding but not for me: LSD, MDMA, shrooms. They sound fun, but I have a crazy, overactive imagination, so I'm not sure these would be good for me. And my brain is the one decent feature I have. So the risk is too high.

With the demise of the A-6, carrier wings only have two fixed wing airframes, the F/A-18, and the E-2/C-2. The -18s can carry buddy packs, but then you lose half your tactical aircraft to passing gas. A dedicated refueler, especially if it doesn't have to carry life support and survivability equipment for a crew means more payload for transferable fuel.

Oh man. So did I. I had a mom who was (and, I believe, still is) EXTREMELY hypersensitive to ANY degree of embarrassment, no matter how minute; and I had a father who I believe had/has anger/rage issues, and took them out on me.

It didn't help that my father wanted a son who was Jack Armstrong All-American Boy, and got a nebbishy Woody Allen type who was afraid of his own shadow, with crippling OCD to boot.

But, and I'm not saying this will help that much right now, but... over the last couple years, I've realized: It's never too late to have a happy childhood.

And that's what I'm trying to do right now... and believe it or not, it's kind of working! I finally have some of the things I've always wanted... and I'm finally getting some of the respect I never had before, even from my own family.

No, still no girlfriend. Maybe there just isn't one coming for me. And sure, it pisses me off and depresses the shit out of me sometimes. But I finally learned that waiting for some silly woman to fall in love with me... gives all those women out there who've rejected me, WAY too much power over my future.

So take that for what it's worth.

It's made quite the difference IMHO. And this person has really helped me to start thinking 'outside the box,' to once again employ that grossly overused phrase. ;-)

551 I just finished watching the NASA science briefing for the TESS mission. Fun stuff!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zPuashuEfE

Back when I was a kid, before I turned 29, the idea of planets orbiting around other stars was strictly science fiction. Sure, we thought there *must* be planets around other stars, but there was no evidence for them. The only planets we knew about were those around our own Sun.

The first confirmed exoplanet was detected in 1988, only 30 years ago. Today we know of over 3700.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exoplanet

TESS will be the first all-sky survey dedicated to looking for exoplanets, and will surely explode that number. I like how it has been described as a "finderscope". Large telescopes use small finderscopes to help point it at a target, which is then studied with the large scope. Likewise, TESS will find exoplanets, which can then be studied in greater detail with large Earth-based scopes and future space telescopes.

Someday when we develop the technology for interstellar travel, the first destinations will very likely be planets discovered by TESS.

Like I keep saying, the Space Age is just starting to get interesting.

But, and I'm not saying this will help that much right now, but... over the last couple years, I've realized: It's never too late to have a happy childhood.

A saying I learned a long time ago, and overall has helped me more often than not:

Life is short. Remember, you can only be young once, but you can be immature forever.

558 521 515. As I've ranted previously - our ancestors didn't walk out across glaciers and float on ice floes for the chance to kill mastodons and whales with pointy sticks for us to sit around bummed out because we got lied to. We are the descendents of great and powerful people - we should act accordingly.
Posted by: Your Decidedly Devious Uncle Palpatine at April 16, 2018 12:24 AM (fA1SL)

The true story of Western Civ is that we have gotten better...

Not that we did not suck... but that people continuously got together, and figured things out.

Problem is, that our kids today don't know that things were MUCH worse back then, and people were doing the best they could.... making slow progress... to make things better...

Because they are spoiled rotten... and don't know how much life CAN SUCK.

It goes back to what I always say, find what makes you happy and make it happen. Find your interests, and find others with those same interests. I always say that a single person is the most lightest on his feet. There is nobody to answer to, nobody to live or die based on your decisions. You are an army of one. When you got 100% freedom you have 100% freedom to pursue any damn thing you want. Granted, some things may require funds, but there is soooo much out there that doesn't.

Layer them in a shot glass, float it with Crown Royal, and you have a Duck Fart!

I guarantee that if you get a mixed crowd and want to get them going and laughing, a round of Duck Farts will do the trick. Unlike Tequila or Whisky, a Duck Fart is much more "ladylike". and the second round will be at the request of the straightest girl in the crowd, the one who never drinks. All will immediately agree, and the night is off and running.

He managed to save one vehicle, but for now he/they are stranded on their second floor.

At least they have flood insurance. And I can't help, as I too am all stove up with a broken leg.

Exactly. Neither AI nor logic cannot get you past the fact/value distinction. The AI can be fed a bunch of facts (assume they're accurate). But then the logic and action it eventually performs (if A and B or C then do_this) is completely arbitrary. That would have to be chosen according to someone's value, so we are stuck with the same problem, how to keep human depravity out of the system.

That's what it says:

https://weather.com/news/news/2018-04-12-gulf-stream-slowing-climate-change-study

the researchers fear a shutdown of the Gulf Stream's circulation is possible in the long-term, and that would have disastrous consequences, bringing rapid sea level rise to the East Coast, more extreme winters to Europe and numerous other side effects.

It's utter bullshit. Whether the weather gets warmer or colder, it's global warming.

.Just read an article about that very subject the other day. A study claims that the Gulf Stream is at the lowest recorded *speed* in over 1,000 years and Europe will be just like Canada in the winter within 100 years if the decrease keeps up.

Of course you have to dig very deeply into the study and read that the *speed* of the Gulf Stream is an estimate except for the last 40 years or so when it has actually be recorded.
