The first thing I noticed when I sat down to eat was worship music playing softly in the background, like Hobby Lobby does, only lower volume. Do they play that in all of their restaurants? I particularly enjoyed "10,000 Reasons" by Matt Redman.

How is it pervasive?

Are all of the menu items given cutesy Biblical names, like "Job's Low-cal salad", "Crucifixion by Chocolate Cake" and "Teach a man to fish filet sandwich?"

Do they close each transaction with, "Have a blessed day!"

Are there Bible verses printed on the food packaging?

Are the shops built to look like Noah's arc?

57 I think we've beat the Chik-fil-A thing to death in earlier threads, so I'm going to take a different tack.

This hipster douche from Brooklyn (oh, I live in Brookly, I'm hip; No, it was hip to live in Brooklyn when it was dangerous) funadmentally misunderstands New York City.

New York is fundamentally about creative destruction. Things that were there in my day looked as if they'd been there forever. Rizzoli book store and a steak joint called Churchills. All the polished oak in the world. Poof, they're gone and New York doesn't care because there's something new.

That was even a Mad Men episode, where Don Draper defends tearing down the old Madison Square Garden.

Rome was not sentimental about its antiquities. They tore the marble off the Colosseum to build new stuff.

If people in NYC are lining up to buy Chik-fil-A then Chik-fil-A is as New York as it gets.

What amazes me is how they've managed to build processes around their near constant busy crowds.

They often have two or three people outside taking orders from the line of cars, inputting orders into pads that tie directly into the store's point of sale system. And when you get to the window to pay, they still know exactly which car you're in and what you ordered.

The left were so successful getting smoking banned everywhere that they're gleeful at the prospect of flexing their tyrannical muscles some more. It used to be that there were no-smoking restaurants and regular places ... but the no-smoking places couldn't compete because everyone wanted to hang out with the smokers. So the left moved on, declared cigarette smoke to create an environment more dangerous than a coal mine, and just ban the smoking places so that the no-smoking establishments could finally survive.

Typical leftist. It's just a shame that we keep letting them get away with this ridiculous shit - especially when they make full-frontal assaults on private property rights on the basis of laughable health arguments ("Ooooh ... Janie can't be allowed to work in an environment where someone is smoking a cigarette. She needs to be able to breathe the clean air that is wafting in from the overpacked street just 7 feet outside the door with the buses and cars belching their clean air.")

The market finally, I think, recovered after the Cigar Boom of the 90s. Now you can get a decent cigar for not a lot of cash.

Back in 92ish, it was all I could to do find a decent box, and even then it was expensive. Decent tobacco was in short supply, and makers would resort to cheap cons like "pre-embargo Cuban tobacco" (hint - the reason it's still in a warehouse in 1992 is because IT IS NO DAMN GOOD).

Ahem. Sorry. But yeah, cigars are great. I've found that Tabernacle is quite tasty, as are the RoMa Craft Cro-Magnons. Maduro wrappers, though.

196 It's not even real Christianity. What they hate is the image they themselves fabricated of Christians as knuckle-dragging, sister-humping, monotoothed, Bible-thumping inbred snake handlers who need instructions in order to fap without supervision.

Yeah, its like the antisemitism of the Nazis, they invented a version of Jews that was nothing like the real thing, then hated that.

But there seems to be something deeper behind the animosity toward Christianity other than mere competition for domination of ideals and fear of the unknown. There really seems to be a deep seated hate, something deeper.

Too optimistic.

You could put the most congenial church-goer in front of them ... and if that guy's not down with the Progressive Struggle - they hate him. But anybody that IS down with the struggle is welcome ... for now.

They hate their political opponents because they're opponents ... the hate of Christianity comes secondary. The same way you teach soldiers to fixate on particular aspects of their enemy. It helps focus the hate. Helps make it real.

But if they knew you or I ? Hate us all the same. Maybe more ... if they view us as a threat.

Its not a misunderstanding.

My understanding is that there is a difference in how the tobacco is 'cured'. Tobacco cured for cigars and pipes has the nicotine in a water-soluble form, enabling absorption in the mouth/throat, while that cured for cigarettes has the nicotine in a fat-soluble form, enabling absorption through the lungs.

Just as 'crack' is a fat-soluble form of cocaine.

The federal tax on a pound of "cigarette tobacco" is around $27 while the same tax on "pipe tobacco" is less than $2.

Oh, I know that. There's roll-your-own cigarette tobacco being sold and labelled as "pipe tobacco" that's going to screw the pipe tobacco market. The FDA deeming bullshit is partly because of that.

But I meant compared to cigars. A good cigar, around here at least, is at *least* $7. That's approximately a 1 hour smoke.
I can get a 1.75 ounce tin of premium pipe tobacco for anywhere from $9 to $14 and that's about 10 smokes at an hour each.

275 Back in 2012 the People's Republic of San Francisco wouldn't issue a permit for Chick-fil-a. A total ban of them they still haven't rescinded.

I'm not a fast food kinda guy, but I wanted to see what all the hub-bub was about. On my way to Tahoe I stopped by the Chick-fil-A establishment in Vacaville (Vaca means cow in Spanish, btw) and got a spicy chicken sammich, waffle fries and a shake. Actually good stuff for fast food fare and I suffered no immediate ill effects.

However, the very next day I was handling serpents, speaking in tongues, passing out Bibles on the street corner and denouncing same-sex marriage.

Chick-fil-A is evil incarnate.

288 What I always liked about Art Bell's show was (1)
His politely skeptical but always willing to listen approach, (2) the
ongoing feud between the UFO/Extraterrestrial faction of listeners and
the Angel/Demon/Ghost/Supernatural faction. It always seemed that after
Art had one too many nights in a row of the former, someone would call
in to complain there was not enough of the latter. And vice versa.

Posted by: Curmudgeon at April 16, 2018 01:41 PM (ujg0T)

I used to love his show, when he would have some crackpot on, and after some expounding on their subject of choice, Art would say something like "Wow, that's incredible Dr. Wackobird," and then ask a question or two that would hopefully get the good doktor sounding a bit less insane.

Art was so respectful of his guests, which was half the fun, because you could tell he didn't believe most of the nonsense these people spewed.

297 My understanding is that there is a difference in how the tobacco is 'cured'.

Posted by: Duncanthrax at April 16, 2018 01:44 PM (ctuyM)

You're talking about the different cures of tobacco. Many sorts of pipe tobacco are not the kinds of things you want to make a cigarette out of. But the federal determination of what constitutes "cigarette tobacco" for tax purposes is based on nothing but how it's cut - length of cut, I believe. That's my understanding of it.

I buy "pipe tobacco" to make my cigarettes. It's the same as the tobacco in cigarettes (though I buy tobacco that I like better than in commercial cigarettes) but it only costs me around $1.25/pack - because of the lack of taxes on "pipe tobacco".

I don't know about cigars but pipe tobacco is much cheaper than
cigarette tobacco (even the exact same tobacco - just a different cut
makes it "cigarette tobacco") mostly because of taxes (and minimal
prices dictated by some states). The federal tax on a pound of
"cigarette tobacco" is around $27 while the same tax on "pipe tobacco"
is less than $2.

Oh, I know that. There's roll-your-own cigarette tobacco being sold
and labelled as "pipe tobacco" that's going to screw the pipe tobacco
market.

There is someone waiting,

Who will hurry up and rescue you,

Just Call for Super Chicken! (puk ack!)

Fred, if you're afraid you'll have to overlook it,

Besides you knew the job was dangerous when you took it (puk ack!)

He will drink his super sauce

And throw the bad guys for a loss

And he will bring them in alive and kickin' (puk, puk, puk)

There is one thing you should learn

When there is no one else to turn to

Call for Super Chicken! (puk, puk, puk)

Call for Super Chicken! (puk ack!)

354 I often wish to ask of militant atheists, what, precisely, has the Church ever forced you to do, say or alter your behavior in the slightest? At what sword-point has the Church ever held you, against your will, while making you into something you chose not to be?

Of course, the spluttering begins at that point.

Because, of course, She has never forced anyone to do anything. The various straw men they propose in Her place notwithstanding.

She does hold up a high standard of behavior as the ideal, and if that makes militant atheists squirm that is really on them, not Her. And, of course, they should squirm, because they reap the advantages of the Judeo-Christian culture they so denigrate.

I subscribed to it while I was in college, and for the most part, it was boring--it featured looong 10 page articles about the history of corn (I kid you not), but also some first-rate short stories and profiles about famous artists or writers. Even the cartoons were sometimes funny. Yeah, it was liberal. But it was a genteel liberalism--it was never vulgar.

371 There's a large shopping complex nearby, phase 1 was completed just as Obama came into office, and most of the stores remained vacant for years. The 2nd phase was never even attempted, just a huge parking lot and pads.

As the economy has suddenly exploded, the vacant stores filled, and phase 2 is finally underway almost 10 years later. First in was a 76 gas station and - a fast food joint? No signs, I prayed for a Chick-Fil-A. The town would love it - at least the current residents, not the encroaching leftist cancer fleeing from Silicon Valley.

Sadly, it's a $#% burger king. The 2nd one in this town (the other one was torn down or there'd be 3). Bummer. The nearest Chick-Fil-A is probably a half hour away, I've never had one yet. I guess we've got an In-N-Out, so there's that.

Sam Verner bought him from slave traders and brought him and a few other guys over to the US as an exhibit at the St Louis World Fair. Verner took them back to Africa, but Benga chose to go with Verner back to the US.

Verner set Benga up with a job at the American Museum of Natural History. Benga didn't like it there and got a new job at the Zoo cleaning cages. Visitors to the zoo were fascinated by Benga and he soon became an official exhibit.

Benga went to an orphan asylum, then later worked at a Tobacco plantation.

434 Of course, if you don't care for peaches to begin with, well, that wouldn't work well. Would it.

440 To be fair, it really isn't who THEY are. For the most part.

Actually, even though it's called "The New Yorker", very few actual New Yawkers actually read it--or even know it exists. It's just a typical elitist ,left-wing rag that carries ads for expensive stuff and like The Atlantic, it's coasting on past glory.

451 They ought to bill the NYC for about $10mm in bad publicity, but tell them they don't have to pay the invoice, they'll just net it against future city income and property taxes they would have otherwise owed.
