David Brooks: Anti-Trumpism Has Failed, Largely Because of the Inability of Its Members to Stop Sneering at Their Enemies

Which is how you got Trump in the first place.

You want more Trump? Well this is how you get more Trump.

ExJon writes about David Brooks' new column.

Below, an excerpt from that column.

A lot of us never-Trumpers assumed momentum would be on our side as his scandals and incompetences mounted. It hasn’t turned out that way. I almost never meet a Trump supporter who has become disillusioned. I often meet Republicans who were once ambivalent but who have now joined the Trump train….

Part of the problem is that anti-Trumpism has a tendency to be insufferably condescending. For example, my colleague Thomas B. Edsall beautifully summarized the recent academic analyses of what personality traits supposedly determine Trump support.

Trump opponents, the academics say, are open-minded and value independence and novelty. Trump supporters, they continue, are closed-minded, change-averse and desperate for security.

This analysis strikes me as psychologically wrong (every human being requires both a secure base and an open field - -we can't be divided into opposing camps), journalistically wrong (Trump supporters voted for the man precisely because they wanted transformational change) and an epic attempt to offend 40 percent of our fellow citizens by reducing them to psychological inferiors.

Speaking of Never Trump Failures:

To which Kurt Schlichter adds one of the briefest, funniest insults I've seen in ages:

Kurt has said that nothing gives him more satisfaction (besides his huge house and hot wife) than seeing people mercilessly bust on Bill Kristol and his failed Cuck Cruise business. So, if you ever see Captain Stubby on the street, say "Ahoy."

Sure, ace, the attitude is appalling, narrow-minded, and arrogant. But it's the cluelessness, the ignorance, the policy-stupidity - THAT is "how you got Trump".

Said it then, will say it again. Trump's combative personality and media savvy would have meant nothing if his campaign stances had been like Yeb!'s, or Rubio's.

And one of Trump's sorry competitors might well have snatched the nominatin of they, you know, actually ran on enormous pressing issues that the GOP and of course the Dems have ignored or exacerbated for years.

88 Nothing says "rule of law" like a special counsel appointed contrary to the governing regulation because there *is* no suspected or underlying crime identified. Who goes on to bring dubious - or even perhaps criminally tainted - charges having nothing to do with the purported mandate, involving staff and judges who may well be going to prison specifically for their misbehavior in this matter.

Oh - and who is "supervised" by a heavily conflicted DAG who might himself be liable to criminal issues pertaining to that purported matter under investigation. Who provides post facto "authorization" for raids that are well outside the norm for the type of case and targets in question.

Dang, that just SCREAMS "rule of law".

241 DonQ,

The problem with no 4 is that the president's pardoning power is plenary and not really reviewable by the courts or Congress.

Don't think you could make an obstruction charge stick in courts over that action as Constitution trumps statute. Not even sure that you could get testimony from the executive branch if executive privilege is invoked.

Mueller is trying the Rick Perry school of indictment and may have actually opened himself up via the leakage to a grand jury summons. Only prosecutorial staff in the SC would know along with RR about potential "findings" at this stage. Every one of them could be forced into grand jury proceedings investigating DOJ leaks--including Mueller et al.

From this, I surmise that he has nothing and like Captain Ahab, the Giant White Whale of Trump is getting ready to smash his boat.

242 Republicans for the Rule of Law.

What a joke. Why haven't any of these Republicans who care so much for the rule of law ever called for an investigation of the on-going Clinton Foundation scam? That's a multi-million-dollar fraud that has been going on under everybody's nose for decades now, and nobody will do a damn thing about it.

Charles Martel, that investment banker who goes through all the public filings, is continually pointing out all the inconsistencies, contradictions, outright violations of existing law, unaccounted-for millions, etc., in the Foundation's paperwork. And you know if the Clinton lawyers put that stuff in the publicly-available documents, the non-public stuff must be even more outrageous.

And then we had one of the Clinton's ultra-insiders, Jon Podesta, writing in his leaked e-mails a few years ago that everybody in the Clinton organization knows that Chelsea Clinton used Foundation funds to pay for her extravagant wedding, and has also been using those "charity" funds to finance her lavish lifestyle, for years now.

But have any of these rule-of-law-loving Republicans demanded a federal investigation into this blatant scam? Have any of them demanded that the Clintons' lawyers offices be searched by the FBI? Or that the Clintons' own records and offices be searched? Oh no, we all know that the Clintons (and the Obamas) are above the law.

Screw these hypocrites. They only care about the "rule of law" when they think they can use it to screw over somebody they don't like, like Trump (and his voters).

the caveat is that in those cabins you do not get life jackets, lifeboat access, and in the event of major damage to the ship you are required to stay below decks and plug holes with your body or run from side to side to shift ballast.

275 Blaster ;

Just got back from the FBI. Drew an actual FBI agent instead of a leftist stooge. He liked my complaint letter (Ace, the second attachment I sent to you). He said they had received other complaints but that they were pretty much just emotional and that I had done a really good job of nailing the legal research. Said he'd be happy to submit my complaints to the DOJ people - but he cautioned me that was where the trouble would be. He did give me some excellent advice on how to apply some political lubrication to the DOJ folks feet to get them moving.

All in all went as well as I could have hoped; he quoted the oath he took to preserve and protect the Constitution - and I could tell he meant it.

___________

It's a Republican bluff, how is it any different than Trump firing Comey?

Republicans aren't going to impeach over Mueller being fired, deep down they know this investigation has become a political witch hunt. Trump should have done it when all those text messages came to light from Mueller's team.

I could however see a good number of Congressional Republicans openly call for removal if Mueller is able to snare him into a perjury trap. Which is why I think it's a far riskier bet to let Mueller continue on with his investigation because a process crime is clearly the goal and Trump is too impulsive.

Eventually Mueller's going to find something in a tax return or someone will flip on Trump to save his own skin. Or Trump is actually dumb enough and be interviewed under oath and says something off the cuff.

354 Brooks op-ed surprised me. The whole thing. Closest I've ever seen him to stepping down off his throne for awhile.

One word stood out like NEON.

"The main reason Trump won the presidency is that tens of millions of Americans RIGHTLY feel that their local economies are under attack, their communities are dissolving and their religious liberties are under threat."

I could swear he has written similar sentences, but without acknowledging people were justified. Also, "tens of millions" stood out. Before it has been some people, or people, or thousands, or rust belt. Maybe he has gotten outside of the beltway and NY.

I could be wrong, haven't read him in forever. Not since his "rug" op-ed. That was a classic.

368 rhomboid,

What I am concerned about is that his threat is political through impeachment and removal from office. I hear crickets from most GOP members in office defending Trump. None of them want to address the investigation and many old bulls are trying to save Mueller's job despite misconduct. That tells me that they are either compromised or want it to happen without their fingerprints on it.

As you mentioned earlier, Congress has pretty much outsources almost all of its powers to the Courts, to the bureaucracy, to the executive, etc. Even most statutes are drafted by special interest groups and often avoid open committee markup.

Heck, even Nixon had old Trent Lott and some others whose names escape me now in the House raising heck among others about the process. Remember how the Dems rallied around Clinton--I think that a lot, perhaps a majority, of the Repubs in Congress would be perfectly happy if Pence ascended and Trump ruined. They just don't want to pay the price electorally to do it--thus evil Inspector Clouseau.

He had the gall to prove them wrong.

378 Here's the big thing about NeverTrumpers:

They let us know what they are against. Kind of like vegans, you will know who they are, because they keep telling you. And like vegans, they are vehemently AGAINST something. For vegans, it's meat and anything at all related to meat. For NT'ers, it's Trump. And anything at all related to Trump.

Well, you're never going to be getting anywhere being against something. You've got to be for something. Want GAINZZ? It's not much to be against being fat. Want all you want. But until you actually work FOR muscles and weight loss, you're in a loser's position, and you're not going to get much farther.
