Welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. As usual we have great pets today and some unusual ones to boot. Take some time away from whatever you were doing. Enjoy!!

A Little of This. A Little of That.

Pit Bulls have a bad name. And now in Kentucky Other dogs have a bad name as well and can't be owned.

Rescue animals. They put on a great show and then get to be adopted.h/t Jane

So, someone missed animal identification class one day.

Meet The PetMorons

Since I talked about some of these pets in a thread, I thought I'd introduce and reintroduce some of the various pets che Blake has had over the years.

This was our own private sign of the end times, dogs and cats sleeping together.

This is Shue, who was featured on a pet thread a while ago. She is the only puppy my wife and I have ever had and it broke our hearts unbelievably when she had to be put down due to bone cancer. It seemed like we only had Shue for the blink of an eye and then she was gone. But, reality is that she was 8 years old, which, for a Great Pyrenees, is just a bit below average lifespan, by a couple of years. Of course, we'd much rather have had the extra couple of years.

The cat is Smidge, who we had to put to sleep because she had intestinal cancer. Again, seemed like no time had gone by, but, Smidge was 13 or 14 at the time. She was a stray that, for some reason, got along fine with dogs, though she was introduced to them much later in life. Of course, it didn't hurt that she wasn't really all that afraid of them.

And, finally, here is our newest rescue: Nikki, with her new buddy, Shadow, who is himself a rescue.

For those who wonder why a white dog is named "Shadow" it's because he follows me pretty much everywhere. Nikki seems to be cut from the same cloth, though she likes to follow my wife.

Miss Nikki is a Golden Retriever while Mr. Shadow is Great Pyrenees/Golden Retriever. Shadow has been featured on the pet thread in the past, also.

This next pooch is Bailey. She was an old dog when we got her and we only had her 18 short months. She was partially blind, completely deaf but the sweetest little thing you'd ever want to meet. We were really blindsided when she had to make her final car ride. One moment she was doing doggy things and the next she was almost completely incapacitated.

Shadow on the left, Nikki on the right. Nikki has deformed front paws but, no matter. She's still a dog who does doggy things and romps happily in our backyard. -Blake

Thanks for sharing Blake. Puppehs & Kittehs on the bed are always cute.

Bottle feeding.jpg

So, a couple days ago, my SiL found a 2-3 day old pup just thrown away. So little eyes still closed and still had the umbilical cord on him. Hurt, too. Which is why he got thrown away, we guess. Anyway, my daughter and her family had had to put their mastiff down just before Christmas. And then Matt finds this little guy. Kismet They are feeding him from a bottle and caring for him and I've got a new granddog. Would appreciate sharing this on the pet thread A couple pics (the first one is 10 minutes after Matt found him) and there's video here: https://www.facebook.com/kismetthemastiff/videos/182530035883989/

ThanX! (McGyver)

Shortly after receiving these photos the pet thread received the following:

Update – After only 12 days, and becoming really attached, Janet and Matt lost little Kismet. He didn’t even get to be old enuff to open his eyes. My kids are heartbroken

Talk about high highs and low lows. Sorry to hear of the pup's demise.

Thank you

Hi there, long time lurker/infrequent commenter Caliban here. This is my friend, Douglas Fur. He’s going on 16 and has become a born-again lap cat. He still has a bit of play left in him and I try not to push it.

Thanks for the pet thread. It’s a beautiful refuge from the ogrewhelming madness of the world.

Wow, such a spoiled cat Caliban. Looks like he has a horrible life Thanks for sharing.

These two motion alarms are Carly (green and yellow) and Ace (blue and white). No, Ace was not named after Ace. Carly and Ace were purchased when #3 son decided he wanted birbs instead of the .22 he was saving for. I informed him that after the cost of the birds, the cage, toys, feed, medicine, and treats, there would be no money left for the rifle. He said he understood. Carly is much friendlier and likes to perch on fingers. Ace is much more wary and only grudgingly accepts others after they prove themselves worthy.

Rihar

What beautiful birds Rihar. So colorful. We don't see too many of these here at the Pet Thread. We appreciate you sending the photo in.

Bella (AussiePoodleWolfhound) hiked 16 miles over a mountain with me and never failed to come back and check if I was having a heart attack after sprinting ahead 100 yards.

I knew she was checking my health because she always makes the "Are you having a heart attack face".

It's hard to see, but she's making the face here:

I spend the holidays alone, because I can be an inconsiderate d-bag.

Bella doesn't know. Please don't tell her.

Duncan MacKochinar

Your secret is safe with us Duncan. But from the sounds of it you have an awesome dog.

CharlieStrawberry.jpg

'Morning, MisHum. Though I'm rarely able to get a comment up any more, rest assured I lurk every day. Without J.J. and Vic I'd be totally ignorant, since the MSM is no longer readable or watchable.

Anyhoo, meet Charlie. Charlie's a free-range guinea pig. He lives under the china hutch, where there is a puppy pad and a grocery bag for privacy. He's very good about confining his messes to the puppy pad and it's lots easier than a cage. Every three days I just wad the whole mess up, chunk it in the garbage and start fresh. Happily, the house has tile floors just in case of a rare mistake.

He gets along fine with all four cats. He seems to think he's one of them, demanding to be fed at the same place and the same time. They seem to think he's some sort of homely kitten.

Charlie's part-Abyssinian. He's long-haired and looks like someone combed him with an egg beater. His fur grows every direction in whorls. How do you like the Donald Trump haircut?

Charlie's the second free-range pigling I've owned. Both developed very strong personalities when they were no longer confined to a cage. Their appetite is even bigger than caged piggies, most of whom eat eighteen hours out of twenty-four. I was feeding Charlie round produce...grapes, tomatoes, blueberries...in a small shallow metal bowl to keep it from rolling away. That had to be removed when Charlie discovered that he could lift the empty bowl in his teeth and slam it down on the tile. You have no idea how much racket metal on tile makes. Bam! Bam! Bam! "My bowl is empty! Feed me!"

Who knew a rodent could be so much fun?

Thanks for cat-wrangling the AOS Pet Thread. It's fun to see other people's fur babies. - Creeper

Creeper, thanks for sharing Charlie's photo and story with us. So does the little critter stay away from your feet? I would be so worried about stepping on it. I'm always stumbling over my dogs.

Lulu Gardening.jpg

Dear Ace,

Lulu has appeared in the Pet Moron post before. Here are a few more pictures of her after getting into some mischief. Hard to stay mad at her.

So how old is Lulu? She looks like a charming puppeh. Mischievous, but charming. Thanks for the submission.

1 read the content. That puppy looks just like one I rescued many years ago. My female rottie wound up taking care of it aside from the bottle feeding.

8 We're taking my old cat to the vets on Monday. His back legs have gotten weak. I don't think we are at that final ride point yet. His appetite is good and he's still trying to be as mobile as he can be. I've owned a lot of cats, but Jack is one of the best. Hope we can get him sorted out.

9 One of the best pet threads! Diverse, sad, fun, happy and as usual, wonderful!

Bella checking to make sure Duncan is okay is hilarious.

I shouldn't single Bella out because all of the pets were adorable!

10 Hahaha. Read the whole thing and get to the bottom - no comments. Coulda been a contendah for first dweeb. Whew.

Hello. Thanks for the pet thread, MH. Usually I'm too late to it. This thread can be such an emotional Tilt-a-Whirl. (Everybody uses roller-coaster; trying to change it up.)

Sad about Kismet, but even as I read the "hurt" I was thinking it might not turn out well. Shoot. Such a cute little pup.

16 So --

My wife and daughter went out this morning to look for our kitten (found safe later, thank goodness) and came back with a Boston terrier they found running in the neighborhood. No collar. She does have a chip -- but the owner didn't register the chip! How can you go to the trouble of getting a pet microchipped and not register it?!

Home Again was able to identify the clinic that ordered the chip -- in 2007. Said clinic is about 10 miles from here. A slim lead at best. Waiting for clinic to return call.

To be continued.

19 Love all the pets, they are such a great combination of cute and mischievious.

Many years ago we had a pair of parakeets that looked like Rihar's. One of them I named Drumstick, which horrified some people and made others laugh. We must have done something right since they lived almost three times the usual span. Not too socialble but they sang beautifully.

Posted by: JTB at April 14, 2018 03:17 PM (V+03K)

20 Microchipping is mandatory in the UK. They still find unchipped dogs and ones that haven't been registered or updated.

Jake is microchipped and wears a tag with his name and both our phone numbers. It's come in handy as he will escape any chance he gets.

24 My HOA has pet restrictions, I think it's not uncommon actually. I know there are local apartment complexes that have a Banned Canine list, so it wasn't too surprising that the KY community came up with their own list.

42 Had a mean white cat growing up (the terror under the bed) and we got him way too early. German Shepherd carried him around in her mouth. Startled people to say the least with the big black dog with half a white kitten hanging out of her mouth. I really think that is how the cat survived. Dirtiest white cat ever and we don't think he ever learned how to groom himself because a swipe from the GS was his cat bath training. Cat was a good companion, but I like dogs so he fit.

54 Awww, Kismet was a cute little guy.

Thanks for the pet thread.

If I am not mistaken, McConnell's trace here in Lexington is just off Leestown rd. I used to live in the subdivision across Leestown from there. It's a nice area, but there are some odd people. They are trying to put in condos, apartments and shops in the area, but the locals are fighting it. Last I heard, they(the locals) had lost.

The sad part is, it is a great area for dogs, even big ones. There are plenty of sidewalks for nice long afternoon walks. A very nice dog park nearby with two compartmentalized areas, one large open field- perfect for throwing the tennis ball. The other one is a space with lots of trees. So, whatever your dog is in the mood for. It is like a dog spa.

I have always liked Rottweilers and Huskies. They are great dogs. Do not actually have much experience with Pitbulls- which is probably the same problem the asshats in McConnell's Trace have. Also, who the hell has a problem with Great Danes? They are huge, lovable dopes.

69 Carly and Ace are very pretty. I love pictures of birds. The people who summer lease my Paso Fino had a bunch of their critters out one time when I was there. I knew the parrot was friendly or they wouldn't take it places but I still passed looking at the beak and claws up close, passed on holding a snake as well, I held the bunny rabbit, amazingly soft fur.

We had our Great Pyr cuz she was a barker and her original family lived in town and Mia was miserable inside so even though the gal worked from home it was not working out. Luckily with 10 acre lots Mia's barking never bugged our neighbors. (Found out its a G Pyr thing to bark to keep predators away, they are not a silent guard breed)

129 sad about the raccoon! We've got one that I almost consider a pet now - the two cats are indoor/outdoor, and I keep a bowl of dry catfood outside on our porch for them. So for most of last year there was this raccoon who would trot up at just about dusk and finish off whatever was there. And when we'd grill something in the yard or sit out at night and look at the stars, often that raccoon would get in the bushes and just sit there and watch us. He (or she) is very curious about us; the cats sometimes get let in through a second story window with a little flat roof outside it, and one night the raccoon was at that window, checking out what the inside of the house looked like. (wondering why he couldn't come in too)

The cats are fine with him - I've seen them all walk right by each other and it's kinda like "Hey Frank" "Hey Ralph, how was your day?" "Oh same old same old, you know"

A neighbor got mad at all the raccoons in her yard and started trapping them and giving them to animal control (and they do get to be quite a nuisance when there are too many, and I heard she trapped 5) and I was worried that our little pal had gone with them. But every night this week I've seen him headed down our driveway at right about dusk, looking for his bowl. So I make sure there's some out there for him.

143 141 Indsomniac--Retired now, but your video CLE post sent a shudder of horror down my spine based on memories of years past.

In Texas, the CLE deadline is keyed to your birth month; deadline is on the last day of the month. My birthday is in November, so I spent the end of nearly every Thanksgiving weekend watching some hideous video. Fortunately, the turkey sandwiches softened the blow.
Posted by: Art Rondolet of Malmsey at April 14, 2018 04:56 PM (S+f+m)

It's a screaming bore. And I don't even have turkey sandwiches on hand.

This story is from Kentucky, and the neighborhood in question is called "McConnell's Trace". Coincidence? I think not.

.It's over by McConnel Springs and it's a family name, not named for just him fortunately. Been that way for a very long time.

The vet clinic identified the dog's owner, and my daughter and I just now returned her. The family lives one street over from us. They didn't even know she was gone, having been busy with sons' basketball games. (Boy, I remember how that was!)

Satisfactory.

Cynthia, don't be disheartened. I once submitted a topic for a food thread and it was a quite a while before CBD. I thought he had forgotten about it or really didn't like it (it was a Frenchman-turned-American's list of the best American foods and I thought it would make for a great discussion). Then, one day, it appeared. The cobs get a lot of email from people and the food and pet threads only appear one day a week. I've met MisHum and I'm positive he's not snubbing you!

165 Has a barking problem with neighbors dogs when we were stationed at Ft. Sam Houston. Two miniature Scotties constantly barking. Eventually the owners took them to the vet and when they came back and eventually tried to bark again the sound they made reminded me of a scene from that old horror flick 'Motel Hell'.

There must be some kind of algorithm that flags certain words and that got it labeled. I can think of some things in the last few weeks that may have caused that...inadvertently. I'm gonna say They haven't attained AI yet, so it isn't taking into account context. Just certain words and frequency of occurrence.

But guessing.

Someone...no idea who...with some gravitas or knowledge should contact them and find out why. It would be a shame to get that reputation.

168 94 -- Do not put an ad any where for "free kittens". People do not value what they get for free. Call them "Home raised" or something like that and charge at least $10 each. Then the new owners actually have something invested in their new pet and are more likely to treat them properly.

170 Greetings:

My sister had a canary that my father liked (a lot) more than she did. One day, i decided that I would train it to perch on my finger to please my dad. The dumb bird flew off my finger and I had to throw my sister's robe over it to get it re-cged. Unfortunately, it had some kind of heart attack and died from the experience. My father was really saddened. My sister put it in the garbage.

The white pooch laying next to the cat is a purebred Great Pyr. Yeah, she liked to bark.

In the last pic, Shadow is Great Pyr/Golden Retriever but not really a barker. Excellent watch dog, though.

173 You are lucky with Shadow Blake. I love a dog that is a good watch dog but doesn't feel the need to be vocal about it. But Mia was good hearted, considered it her solemn duty to guard our horses and with lots of space to the neighbors it was fine.
