Oh: FaceBook is Collecting Data on People Who Never Even Signed Up for FaceBook

Professional privacy invader Mark Zuckerberg recently defended FaceBook's spying on its customers products: You signed up for this. It spells it out in that app licensing agreement that no one reads.

Over the weekend, Android owners were displeased to discover that Facebook had been scraping their text-message and phone-call metadata, in some cases for years, an operation hidden in the fine print of a user agreement clause until Ars Technica reported. Facebook was quick to defend the practice as entirely aboveboard--small comfort to those who are beginning to realize that, because Facebook is a free service, they and their data are by necessity the products.

In its current iteration, Facebook's Messenger application requests that those who download it give it permission to access incoming and outgoing call and text logs. But, as users discovered when prompted to download a copy of their personal data before permanently deleting their Facebook accounts, a certain amount of data was covertly siphoned without explicit permissions. Buried inside those data caches was an unsettling amount of specific, detailed information--in some cases, every phone call or text message ever sent or received on their Android device.

Dylan McKay, who apparently owns an Android phone, reported that for the period between November 2016 and July 2017, his archives contained "the metadata of every cellular call I've ever made, including time and duration" and "metadata about every text message I've ever received or sent." When people like McKay agreed to share their contacts with Facebook, it appears they didn’t know the extent to which they were giving Facebook access to their personal information.

McKay related that in a twitter thread -- you can actually request all the information FaceBook has downloaded about you. McKay showed how extensive a file FaceBook had compiled on him.

Back to the first-linked article:

Facebook responded with a blog post laying out the applicable user-agreement terms and denying that Facebook collects call or SMS data surreptitiously. "Contact uploading is optional. People are expressly asked if they want to give permission to upload their contacts from their phone--it's explained right there in the apps when you get started," the company said in a statement to the Guardian. "People can delete previously uploaded information at any time and can find all the information available to them in their account and activity log from our Download Your Information tool."

But is it true that "You signed up for this"?

What if someone else signed up for this, permitted FaceBook to scrape their contact information which included you -- and then FaceBook started collecting information on you, you who had never agreed to any of this?

PJMedia reports this is what's going on.

Facebook's problems just keep accumulating, drip by drip—or more like splash by splash. It’s now been discovered that Facebook not only collects and uses the personal data of its members but also collects the data of those who never signed up for Facebook.

So if you're one of those who blames Facebook users for allowing their personal data to be compromised, don't be so smug. Facebook may be sharing your personal data as well.

Daniel Kahn Gillmor, senior staff technologist at the ACLU, discovered that, although he never joined Facebook or any other social network, Facebook has a detailed profile on him.

Facebook obtains information from those not on Facebook in two different ways: from other Facebook users and by tracking people who visit other other sites on the web.

When people sign up for Facebook, they're encouraged to upload their contacts to make it easier for Facebook to connect them with their friends. That allows Facebook to access personal contact information for people who never signed up for the platform or gave their permission to share their information. Facebook knows that these contacts are friends of the new Facebook user, and can start compiling additional details on these non-members.

While this "profile" does not contain, supposedly, "Personally Identifying Information," it does include a lot of information, enough that it might be pretty easy to guess who it is, if you know which person added this officially-unidentified person as a contact.

As Gillmore says:

Given the precision of this kind of mapping and targeting, 'PII' isn’t necessary to reveal my identity. How many vegans examine specifications for computer hardware from the ACLU's offices while reading about Cambridge Analytica?"

I'm not on FaceBook, but that makes me wonder: My own interests and hobbies are pretty evident from this blog. If someone on FaceBook has added me as a contact, which I'm sure they have, then 1, they're collecting a lot of personal information about my web activity and 2, it would not be very hard at all to guess the Personally Identifying Information and complete the data set.

Gillmore, in his article at the ACLU blog, calls FaceBook a prime mining company in the "surveillance economy."

That seems like a good new word.

But if it is in the TOS and no one read it, that's on you. Sure I killed someone, man, but I ain't never read or heard about your laws. Not really an excuse.

BUT... these tech companies have sucked for a long time and all of them seem to relish existing under a veil of secrecy that would make the old USSR sit up and take notice. Big changes drop without anyone even hearing about what's going on. I used to review a lot of shit on Amazon back in the day and they were notorious for making changes to stuff and not saying a word about it. They wouldn't even say much after it happened. The Socials have gotten so bad with whipsawing from one liberal butthurt to another that you could make a post that's fine in the morning and then make the same post in the afternoon and it's removed and your account's suspended because something something Trump. It's absolutely ridiculous and I do think they're going to pay for it down the road.

63 Over the weekend, Android owners were displeased to discover that Facebook had been scraping their text-message and phone-call metadata, in some cases for years, an operation hidden in the fine print of a user agreement clause until Ars Technica reported.

Forget the fine print (which is perfectly fine with me), whenever you load an app into your phone or tablet it tells you, specifically, what permissions it must be given in order to run. You have to affirmatively sign off on all the data you are letting it have access to.

I don't buy any argument from someone that they "didn't know" Farcebook was going to use the data that they, themselves, had to affirmatively okay for the app when they loaded it on their machine. Don't like it? Don't use it. I don't.

Now, as to Farcebook collecting info on me through people I know who are stupid enough to be on Farcebook and put stuff with me in it on there ... Meh. Not much can be done about that, or should be, I don't think. That's a problem I personally have with those friends, not with Farcebook.

The problem is you're relying on your friends and family not to post on the internet. I have relatives who post pictures of everything they do on Facebook. I'm in some of those pictures, and people have helpfully identified me.

So Facebook knows who I am. It can make a pretty good educated guess on what I do for a living, how old I am, whether and where I went to college, where I live, and what I do in my spare time.

I suppose one possibility is to go around telling everyone not to post pictures that include me, but that's a bit on the cranky side when it's a picture from someone's wedding, say, or a big picture of the extended family.

112 1 - stunning that anyone/anything connected to the ACLU would do anything connected with anything OTHER than reduction of freedom and liberty and continued evisceration of the constitution and the rule of law. I don't expect it to signal any sort of trend, however .....

2 - I realize there's no other way to talk or share with people, since email and websites (many cable TV contracts come with a free website capability) and phones themselves no longer exist, but the Farcebook addiction continues to amaze. Worst offender I know has the stupid microphone, er, speaker thing (Goolag, in this case) in their kitchen. Thing can't answer 95% of questions we ask it, even current news and basic info. Recently we're sitting there and suddenly her phone is calling a friend of hers - without being touched. She said something about "crazy system calling people on its own" - but didn't cross her mind to think about disconnecting some of automation that saves her trivial time but places her/her family directly into the middle of all this s**t.

Not many Lower 48 politicians or celebrities do well up here. They seem to think we are going to bow down to them like folks do down south. Up here, you are just a guy or a gal, and nobody cares how much money you make or who else you know.

It takes some getting used to, I suppose. Took my husband nearly six months to ditch wearing a tie. I finally told him he looked like a California lawyer and he got the message.

I'm told Jimmy Buffett comes up ever year to go fishing, because nobody cares that he is Jimmy Buffett. Other folks have said the same thing.

However, I think what is likely a surprise to most is the sheer amount of data they're collecting and what they're doing with it. For example, what they collect on non-users and also what they're linking their user data to, such as pharmacy info, credit card use data, etc.

We sat down and figured out how long the closed road was, how fast we could go for exactly how long and had designated markers where we slowed down. With a slide rule. Did the run with a stopwatch and a schedule that will not be deviated from. We did, after all, want to brag about this to our other supercar buddies.

246 A couple of items -

Blizzard, the company that owns World of Warcraft and StarCraft, among other properties, tried to push something called "Real ID" a few years ago. The intent was that your account with Blizzard would be identified by your Real ID, which contained some identifiers from your real world identity (unfortunately, I don't remember the full details off the top of my head). The players didn't like it one bit. So to assure the players that there were no risks involved, a couple of Blizzard employees posted their Real ID information on the Blizzard forums. Before the day was over, the players had identified who exactly those two employees were, where they lived, etc...

Blizzard eventually released Real ID (the company can't seem to let their bad ideas go...), but did end up scaling it back from what was originally planned.

A few weeks ago, I got rear-ended by another driver. During the course of getting the other driver's information, I took a picture of her license using my smart phone. I later used the picture to copy down the driver's license number and similar information, but did nothing further with it. It stayed in my phone's gallery.

I have the Facebook app and Communicator app (which is a Facebook messaging app that some of my friends rely on) on my phone.

When I got home and went to my Facebook page, I was shocked to see the picture of the driver's license sitting in my personal feed (with a note indicating that I was the only person that could see it) as part of a post asking me if I'd like to add a colorful border to the picture. Keep in mind that this was my computer, and the picture was still in my phone's gallery. It had not been added to my Facebook gallery. And yet Facebook was using it anyway.

Basically book keeping nonsense.

Doesn't seem too far fetched.

There are some decent low-cost and free VPNs that will broadcast an incorrect IP address. Windscribe comes to mind, although my experience hasn't been great with things that demand speed. If you're just browsing it's okay, though. IIRC you can get 2GB/month free anytime and 10-50GB/month free with promotions. You should be able to do some searches and find some links.

The MFM gave their Preezy Boyfriend absolute cover on that debacle.

The reality is that they probably are. I've operated under that belief for a long time. I think as tech has advanced, that has become more and more true. They don't ask "should we do it", they ask "can they do it". And since they can, they do. Look what we know about Twitter now. They collect everything. Hundreds of people scan stuff. And yet people are still using it.

My guess is even though I use a private, secure e-mail address, bcz my friends and family use google & yahoo, that my email contents are discoverable. It seems even if you are secure on your end of things, if the other party isn't, then your privacy is gone.

He was my presidential pick and I would've agreed with you before Charlottesville, but he no longer knows or cares about liberty and freedom. Said so himself when he blamed the Americans who bothered to get the permits to march for the antifa violence. Comically, it's on his facebook page:

"The First Amendment protects the rights of all Americans to speak their
minds peaceably, but violence, brutality, and murder have no place in a
civilized society."

Sadly, he's still probably one of the best we've got, and he's clearly warped and not to be trusted.

401 Since Tami has brought up shows. Has anyone watched the Alienist? I had the TV on in the background one night and they were running a marathon of commercials. I really think the producers or writers need to be on a list. Was there "boy whores" at the time in New York? Because it seems like half that show was made just to have 10-14 year old boys dressed up as girls. And it just seems that show could almost have easily written with female prostitutes as the victim of the serial killer.

Yeah. Unless your the Jersey Devil (Jon Corzine).

For those who need reminding: the little Devil got caught on a margin-call, using CME funds to gamble on European sovereign debt during the really bad member state bond issues years back. To the tune of a billion in losses. And, better yet, on behalf of the Clintons, who'd received large bribes to ensure buyers for German bonds when there was no bid for them at auction.

Then the little bastard just fled to some island (I forget where), and cooled his jets for several years til the heat was off, Obamas CFTC let him off the hook with a piddling $5,000,000 fine. During the lame duck period.

I remember that I once read, on a smart military blog, that when the forceful application of law becomes impossible, the lawless application of force becomes inevitable...

516 When my husband was being exploited by his ex-wife, who was also not honoring the visitation agreement, I encouraged him to get a lawyer.

He didn't do it. I don't know if it would have made things better or worse. She would have found some way to make him pay.

Meh. I skip over it, if I don't want to see it. The problem is not bad choices with women. It's bad choices with women AND a shitty system stacked against men. It's an objective truth.

519 I have no problem with defacto AG becoming official acting AG until someone like Pruitt takes the helm, as I mentioned several times before. Reality is that Sessions has proven to be cowardly and incompetent, he needs to go. If you want to keep copying and pasting the same little lines, have at it.

I just think that Sessions is incompetent and that he is acting like a timid little field mouse for anything going forward. It never should have gotten this far

What did I say earlier today ?

The power to control who may or may not speak is powerful. Very few can be trusted with it. Most will use it to bend to their desires the overall direction of any conversation.

You white knight cuck would not last a year in my shoes the last 6. Not one. Also blaming the man for marrying a psychopath were there is zero responsibility, accountability, and consequences for women is typical of both feminists and TradCucks.

You would rather see men and boys get destroyed along Western Civilization get destroyed. You truly are a traitor to America and Western Civilization you White Knight Cuck.

Let me know when you fight a real war for men in America. You can't and you won't.

BTW. I don't badmouth marriage. I badmouth the laws and family courts and white knight faggits.

526 I think i just stumbled bass-ackwards into that scene in Roadhouse where all the people are fighting and there's bottles flying everywhere and shattering against the stage-cage.

Wait a second, that's every scene in Roadhouse.

At least it is in my memory.

He's already been confirmed once so it was my understanding that he wouldn't have to be confirmed. If Sessions resigned then we would have to have a new AG.

I kinda went through something like that. I pointed out that the divorce was 100% her fault, and I could prove it in court, and she wouldn't get a plugged nickel.

She pointed out that, even though that was true, neither one one of us would be worth a plugged nickel, once she was finished dragging us through the law-courts.

My attorney explained that, with our relative net-worths, and the nature of family law in (state), that she was basically right. He advised me to give her what she wanted (within reason) and cut my losses.

529 Imagine being so pathetic that a man has to falsely accuse another man of a thought crime brought up almost a year ago. Imagine being so pathetic as a man, you can't argue points but have to make shit up, shame, and use feminist tactics. Imagine being so weak as a man that you can't work to fight against a system that hates you and wants you dead, so you attcak men who are fighting the real conservative/right wing issue in real life.

What a joke. All traitors will get what they will get in the end.

530 527: This individual just wants to insult people. His OIG white knight has not materialized and Sessions is a walking debacle. "Trust Sessions" has proven to be nothing more than the fever dream of a LARPer who calls himself Q. When people find their views so harshly shattered they tend to lash out in ugly ways.

532 When you can get data easily, you always want more. This is the total weak spot with the surveillance economy. They have more than enough insight to know what you like and don't like and your persona.
But this is going to be a very big issue for Google and Android as well as Facebook.
In China, using social media enables the government to create a social credit score - only jobs to good communists.
Facebook and the left are not far behind.

534 If you like the term "surveillance economy", you should read some of Shoshana Zuboff's work. She coined the term.
