Incredible: California's 10-Cartridge-Capacity Magazine Law Was Evaded by YouTube Shooter By Unexpected Tactic of Swapping Out a Spent Magazine for a Loaded One

Can we cut to the chase and making changing out empty magazines illegal?

Maybe we can pass a law that says you can only put three (3) bullets in a magazine, and cannot carry a second magazine, whenever you plan on shooting up a school or business...?

Wait a tic -- if we can pass a law requiring those intending a mass casualty shooting to load no more than three (3) bullets, perhaps we can tighten up the law a little to limit them to zero (0) bullets...?

Problem solved! I'm astonished at my own brilliance! I've solved the mass shooting crisis!

23 Well, they're now trying to require the sale of gun parts be restricted to licensed dealers, no importation, and background checks to purchase:

The proposed bill text, likely to be adopted soon, would create an entirely new class of highly-regulated items called "firearm precursor parts" that would include barrels, ammunition feeding devices (including magazines for semi-automatic firearms and "speed loaders" for revolvers), "unfinished receivers," molded or shaped polymer frames or receivers, metallic castings, metallic forgings, receiver "flats" such as Kalashnikov style weapon systems, Browning-style receiver side plates, Kalashnikov style receiver "channels", finished upper receivers for AR-15 and AR-10 style firearms, unfinished handgun frames, finished slides that are used to enclose handgun barrels, and trigger pack or fire control groups for Heckler and Koch or FN FAL style firearms.

Well, that and the fact that it wasn't a MAGA hat-packing Christian white male. They keep aiming at the right and it keeps being a leftist. Usually a weed smoker too. That stuff doesn't make you a killer, but some people, it just goes really wrong in their brains.

There's been two common themes in nearly every mass shooting in America: no dad, and pot. Its kind of shocking how near-total these line up every time.

It was a binary choice, either xer had an illegal high cap magazine or was able to make multiple magazine changes due to the number of shoots fired, so the law prohibiting high cap magazines is a total failure and does nothing to stop these kinds of shootings.

199 Animal rights (ALF) and environmental rights (ELF)activists have done more damage than the tea party (which is easy since, the latter's record is ZERO), but I think most people would be surprised by all of their collective attacks (arson, spiking trees, etc.) over the past few decades. They can be crazy committed.

Maybe 8 years ago a well-known sheepskin shop in Denver was burned to the ground. They caught the guy who did it - he had a huge "EAT VEGAN" tattooed around his neck. And...a old friend reported the guy had a burger at a family bbq the weekend before the arson. Crazy.

It'll include all semi-auto, pump, lever, and bolt-actions.

They'll stop just short of a complete ban. Breech-loaders will be allowed - to appease the hunters. And that's about it.

Thats what they want.

205 The Gun Grabbers are laughing at all the Gun Rights folks making fun of the laws being broken.

Why? Because they will use those arguments to claim that only an outright ban on all firearms, ammunition, reloading gear will be the only thing that will work.

You don't really expect them to discuss this rationally? They already seem to ignore the fact that criminals will obey no laws or at least none that they don't want to.

The feds again have said that a firearms ban isn't infringing on anyone's 2A rights and soon a lot of states will have one.

Piers made the mistake of equating every bullet in a magazine to a death, and pressed Shapiro to answer why he'd be Ok with a magazine holding some number N of rounds when that represents N deaths.

Shapiro saw the flaw, and jumped on Organ's argument, pointing out he's making an argument for banning guns. If every round in a gun equals a murder, why should guns be legal at all?

Organ has claimed many times he doesn't want a ban, so he was trapped. Of course, he had an escape plan for such situations. He simply ignored the question.

As I understand it, the FGM thing is African, its a Sharia law decision in that area. Each region has their own Sharia court, and the African one is Ismaeli, sort of a spinoff of Shia Islam. The other Sharia courts (Malaysia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, etc) do not have that as part of their religion. Again, that's as I understand it, from some study.

Its true that they don't give a crap about women's pleasure in sex culturally or religiously (individual men probably do) but FGM is more about controlling a woman's overpowering sexual power and urges to make her tame and safe for men to be around.

I fully agree, said no one ever. The one salient fact that emerged from the 1984 Miami shootout between the FBI and two murderous, well-trained bank robbers, easily the most documented and studied gunfight in modern history, the more ammo capacity you have, the better your odds of hitting your attacker and surviving the encounter. Pausing to reload or running out of ammo in the middle of a fight can bring about a very bad day.

There are two very good reasons why law enforcement transitioned en masse from revolvers to semiautomatic pistols: faster reloading speed and greater ammo capacity. These advantages have been understood since the introduction of the first genuinely reliable semiautomatic pistols.

348 The guy that wrote it literally said that. he said he just hoped it would survive long enough for someone to come up with a better argument to make the ruling stick and figured it would be shot down soon.

But there are so many rapists and molesters in power they need that thing to stick no matter how idiotic or awfully reasoned it is.

409 The one salient fact that emerged from the 1984 Miami shootout between the FBI and two murderous, well-trained bank robbers, easily the most documented and studied gunfight in modern history, the more ammo capacity you have, the better your odds of hitting your attacker and surviving the encounter. Pausing to reload or running out of ammo in the middle of a fight can bring about a very bad day.

It's incredible how inept the Feebs were in that shootout.

One of the FBI's most accurate shooters was on scene, but useless because he lost his glasses.

One Feeb took his gun out of the holster and stuck it under his leg for easier access, and when they got in a wreck, the gun shot out from under his leg and landed on the floorboard. Then he had to scramble around trying to find the gun while he was taking fire.

Several of the Feebs were carrying different calibers of weapons, so when one ran out of ammo, they couldn't get a reload from someone who had more.

Then there was the fact that the Feebs tactic of a rolling car stop completely neglected to take into account the robbers were military trained, a fact easily discerned from the data they'd gathered while hunting them. Any military man at the time would have told the Feebs that military doctrine in an ambush situation is not to give up, but to attack the ambush.

I'm a big fan of 'more ammo'. Almost every gun I carry has a capacity of 13+

However, that gunfight ended when a wounded FBI agent killed the primary shooter with a .357 revolver.

There's a lot to unpack from that encounter. But a good shooter with 'enough gun' was still decisive.

427 Gotta love the endless mag in movies. Ninety rounds out of a 1911 before slide lock which only occurs as the last bad guy is falling dead.

That was really the only flaw in Open Range, Costner's 19-shot revolver. I count in every movie I see, its a sort of fixation. Like when someone is drowning or doing something underwater, I hold my breath to see if its possible. And count down when something is doing a countdown, even when its not on screen. They're almost never right. 10... 9... *extended conversation* oops you're dead.

Or when someone pulls a pin on a grenade to throw it. 1...2...3...4....5.. you're dead.

450 1911 suffers from a pretty small capacity in modern terms but it was a wonder when it came out. Still a solid gun, I like it's classic look and nifty features. But the only one I ever fired jammed after a couple magazines. I'm told that's a problem with Wal*Mart bullets, but really if its the only gun that keeps having a problem with cheap bullets... maybe its not just the ammo.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at April 06, 2018 05:14 PM (39g3+)

Those bullets in the revolver were the last bullets the FBI had. The other FBI agents still on their feet and in the fight were out of ammo. Although Michael Platt, the primary shooter, was bleeding out and certain to die at that point, it was a very near-run thing.

Me, I have to really focus on the front sight to get tight groups. Under stress, I tend to stiffen my right arm like a board and bring in my left arm close to my body. Not perfect but seems to work pretty well with most pistols.

I'm sure there was more to the story, but I've always heard it told as a great marketing jujitsu move by a new(ish) entrant in to the US market -- Glock, pushing what was derisively known as a "plastic gun" by handing out the guns to cops and paying hollywood for product placement...

Like I said, I'm sure there's more to the story, but I don't think it's as simple as "cops were waiting for the right gun to come along before they switched to revolvers. That gun was the Glock 19." or whatever.

496 the feds should have been hands down the better shooters.

Special Agent Benjamin Grogan was one of the FBI's best shooters. He lost his glasses in the very first stages of the shootout and became practically useless.

Posted by: bonhomme at April 06, 2018 05:21 PM (iv0p7)

497 well that is true but your sentence "good shooter withe 'enough gun'", hints at the problem with the study. enough gun is half of the problem, quality of the shooter is the other. the feds should have been hands down the better shooters.

I've read and seen some really really good studies on what happens in a firefight and despite movies like John Wick, most people blaze away stupidly and chew through rounds like Michael Moore at a candy bowl. Even the military is godawful despite their training. the stats are tough to nail down perfectly because of things like covering fire, but its literally tens of thousands of rounds per casualty.

Another feature is tunnel vision, where a shooter is so focused and locked into their target they literally do not see around them, even near the target. bang bang, gotta get that guy and his buddy walks up and puts one in your ear hole.

499 1911 suffers from a pretty small capacity in modern terms but it was a wonder when it came out.

The 1911, like all the military arms of the first half of the 20th century, was designed to shoot ball ammo. Accordingly, they have a fairly steep angle on the feed ramp, which caused problems with the early hollowpoint rounds that tended to be fairly angular. This problem went largely went away when the feed ramp was polished smooth, and when hollowpoints with more rounded profiles were introduced.

Some modern 1911s are built to very tight tolerances, much tighter than the old military pieces. This makes for better accuracy at the expense of less tolerance for dirt, etc., in the mechanism, I think. Maybe the piece you were firing was one of the very tight guns and it was susceptible to fouling issues from less expensive ammo?

My mid-range 1911 eats the Wal-mart ammo just fine.

With 1911's, magazines are often the culprit too.

I like the 1911 more than revolvers but they can be a hassle. More of a range toy for me.

Modern 45 autoloaders like Glock, XD and S&W (if you don't mind sacrificing 3 rounds) work much better and the latter two are very ergonomic.

don't disagree with any of that. would think, expect, that the amount of training that the agents had and training for that type of engagement would make them more likely to outperform in those circumstances.

Bank robber and murderer Michael Platt was a former US Army Ranger with combat experience and a Ruger Mini-14 carbine. He was shot 11 times with shotgun pellets, 9 mm and revolver bullets and didn't go down until he took a .357 in the face.

Platt was a psychopath with a military mindset and lots of experience. His tactical training and responses were at least as good as any agent there.
