Update: David Hogg Was At School During Shooting, But Got His Camera from Home and Came Back Afterwards to Do Interviews

I overread David Hogg's statement yesterday. Although he did say he "raced to the school" on his bike in that interview, he didn't say he had been home all day before then. Which raises the possibility that he had been at school during the shooting, then left to go home for his camera, and then "raced" back to school.

This site -- Politifact, which I don't normally trust, but I'm going to credit it as accurate for now in this case -- says Hogg got to the school with his camera at 6 pm, which is obviously much later than any school closes and hence this particular arrival at school would be well after the school day was ended early due to the shooting. And therefore he would have had plenty of time to go home, get his camera, and come back, even including all those hours one would assume he wasn't free to leave due to police lockdown.

I'm pretty sure I leapt too quickly on this and didn't consider the was-there-and-left-and-then-came-back possibility.

We might hear more about this, but this timeline seems pretty plausible to me, and I think now we just heard a statement out of full context.

Somewhat related, TMZ is reporting Hogg was accepted to a number of schools, including Cal Poly, but was rejected from the University of California school system.

David has been rejected by the 4 University of California campuses where he submitted applications -- UCLA, UCSD, UCSB and UC Irvine. He says the rejection letters came 2 weeks ago. He has a 4.2 GPA and an SAT score of 1270.

Schools claim extracurricular activities count, but if organizing the March For Our Lives wasn't enough ... it's not clear what is. David is clearly disappointed.

David got accepted at Cal Poly, Cal State San Marcos and Florida Atlantic University, but he's not sure what he'll do after graduating.

He organized it? Well, whatever. I think it's interesting that it seems certain to media liberals that being politically active ought to count as an "extracurricular activity" that should get you into a college you would otherwise be rejected from.

Would they say the same about pro-2nd-Amendment student activists? Pro-life student activists?

Somehow, I think they would not.

TMZ figures schools should be "clamoring" to admit this Privileged White Male because he's a leftist -- which is what most students at these schools are.

So the diversity he'd bring is... none. None more diversity.

I imagine we can safely say that "diverse" is now just straight-up code for "leftist." And it doesn't matter if your school is packed with leftists; adding one more just makes it that much more "diverse."

17 I watched the actual video clip including a bit before and let it run a bit after the I got my bike and from the edit it clearly seemed to be referring to when he very first responded to the news of the shooting. It's edited to make it seem like that.

Which begs the question as to why CBS would do that. *dons jaunty tin foil hat* To make us all call him a liar?

Also wasn't there a teacher who got suspended for asking her class to discuss the basic question of whether pro-life students would be treated the same way? IIRC, and I may not, she wasn't even advocating for that position, she was, get this, attempting to use a current events topic as a teachable moment to get her class to consider matters for multiple perspectives. Also known as teaching.

Why do they keep moving the goalposts?

When I was in school you couldn't get better than a 4.0 and a 1270 SAT was respectable, because it was out of 1600 not 2400. You can barely compare things anymore.

They have indeed rejiggered the scale multiple times. In every case, the object is to make the average score go up. This has the effect of having more and more people at the top of the scale. When that's the case it's easy to admit who you want because everybody's got a high score and you have to rely on quote holistic unquote factors.

Aww, poor Hogg. The alligator ate him last.

And I still don't buy the explanation, he came back. His statement that this could not be another mass shooting implies he did not have knowledge of the extent. You'd have to have been under a rock for the last ten hours to not have known it was a mass shooting, at that point. And if it wasn't a "mass shooting," why the rush to get interviews.

Now that realization does not explain that he was not at school, during the shooting. But what it does reveal is his primary motive - in the face of dead and dying classmates (his peers) - his only concern was to get a story, get his 15 minutes of fame. His subsequent actions leave no doubt about that realization and the realization that he is a loathsome individual.

I look forward to hearing about his participation in the ostracizing of Cruz.

In his video statement, he says he got his camera, jumped on his bike and rode 3 miles to school ...

... he doesn't say back to school, as everyone else would.

Perhaps his statement is slightly out of not presented in full context ... but Hogg is speaking, and to a supportive audience and a friendly interviewer. He, himself, creates the belief that he was not at school at the time of the shooting.

WHo saw Hogg at school during the shooting? Let's exclude his friends, and allies.

How long was the school locked down? Could he have returned home to get his camera, then returned to the school in the time between the end of lockdown and 6:00PM? Where is "6:00PM first mentioned, and by whom?

I get the feeling that someone is trying to backfill Hogg's timeline.

I mean it makes perfect sense to differentitate the kids that are taking real coursework compared to the "CP" courses aka you'll need remedial classes at your JC before you go to college level.

They can't exactly tell the other kids that their A is only worth a 3.0, so you use weighted gpa to reward AP/IB students with an extra point for those classes.

I overread David Hogg's statement yesterday. Although he did say he "raced to the school" on his bike in that interview he didn't say he had been home all day before then. Which raises the possibility that he had been at school during the shooting, then left to go home for his camera, and then "raced" back to school.

Boy that makes him look much better. Instead of using that time to assist his classmates like others did he rushed home to get his camera because he saw an opportunity and didn't want a good crisis go to waste. A budding young journalist/activist he is.

The class was a statistical anomaly.) I was third in the class with a 3.73, and clepped out of three semesters of college. But I wasn't an activist organizer, I just volunteered in the neonatal unit at the hospital for four years, sang in competition choirs, played competition piano, and three sports a year. So yeah, I'm thinking that the 4.2 is inflated, and the score is mediocre, and that school systems need to be overhauled to actually teach kids something they need, like math, reading and how to write a proper sentence. No emojies or anything. Maybe even in cursive.

But that's too hard, and makes them feel threatened, I guess. God help us that our nation has come to this.

One account said that he was in a different building and was hiding in a closet as the gunfire was going off.

I can't really blame him for that.

I can blame him for speaking like he was in imminent danger. That's saying there was some danger, but it didn't approach his position.

That he was afraid, I have no doubt.

This. Like I said, I am not saying he was not there. But the way they are selling this as some sort of survivor's story (Shut up. You can't question a survivor.), it makes the inquiries and requests for explanations and consistency absolutely pertinent and proper.

Took both, mostly because it was there. Why not? Suppose one scored well and the other did not?

Anyway, SAT was not all that difficult, although there were a few questions I just didn't answer. Wrong answers used to count against your score, so not answering if you were unsure was the wise way to go.

I did fine. Most kids who were really headed to college did fine. The rest either didn't try or didn't do so well, and went to community college or some such.

Either way, taking a bunch of prep just makes it a false test. How much of the prep do you suppose stays with them? Not much.

Some examples of application questions:

Some students have a background or story that is so central to their identity that they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.
......
Reflect on a time when you challenged a belief or idea. What prompted you to act? Would you make the same decision again?

It is supposed to be listed as weighted GPA, not to be mistaken for cumulative which is still out of 4 max. Reporters don't understand that, nothing new there though.

All AP/IB are given an extra 1.0 weight for the last several decades. I don't know how things may have been done before that. You can't take all AP/IB classes since most electives and things like PE obviously won't have a counterpart, so a 5.0 isn't possible

The SAT is basically an IQ test; when it was instituted it was derived from IQ tests of the time. When I took it, at least, it was not so much a matter of knowledge and retention as testing for basic academic skills (hence the name, "scholastic aptitude test"). The verbal part largely entailed reading a passage provided and then answering questions about it to test one's reading comprehension.

The math part had precious little mathematics on it, but instead had a lot of "which triangle (or number) is the next in the series" type questions, i.e., pattern recognition.

I seriously considered retaking it to get 1600, but I had so many AP and IB tests to take (I ended up getting 45 hours of college credit. of course I was majoring in engineering so it didn't help me graduate any faster), plus I had to take several SAT IIs, so I decided it wasn't worth it. Still pissed that I got 780 on the SAT I math and 800 on the SAT II math IIc. I wish those scores had been swapped.

Most admissions departments know how schools grade, though, at least roughly. So someone with a 3.7 coming out of my HS was roughly on par with a 4.1 at another school.

380 paying someone to take ones place - I did have a couple of very honorable ancestors in the last Civil War, including one who became a brevetted General for the 21st Wisconsin. (brevetted means you got the rank as a retirement present) But there was another great great grandfather who was not so honorable - not only did he pay someone to take his place, he then got rich during the war by buying up all the farmland of the men who had gone off to war and died at super cheap prices. At the end of the war he had become the biggest landholder in the county.

Well, his grandson was an idiot and lost it all in the depression, so ashes to ashes and all that.

No, IQ is always re-averaged to 100 each year. There is a creep effect upward, called the Flynn effect but that is not from people getting smarter over time, unfortunately.

The Flynn effect is a very complicated issue with the way IQ test questions are selected. I wish it meant we were getting smarter, but that's not the case as it was originally assumed when the effect was discovered.

Going to a community college for 1-2 years then transferring to a better school leaves you with far less debt.

I see your point, but almost every high school football player I know attended "speed schools" where the goal is to cut a half second or so from your finish time for the 100 yard dash. And in baseball, it's well-known that speed isn't everything in running the bases. You have to know "how" to run. That can be taught. Of course speed like Deion Sanders or Rickey Henderson's can't be taught.

That being said I want the left to seriously push to repeal the 2nd. Seriously push for the abolition of guns. Then they will know that there is a serious majority of people in the US that want to at least have the option to own firearms. And they would learn that 100s of millions of citizens own guns and that for a sizable percentage they own multiple small arms and know how to use them. The 2nd amendment protects the rights of the people and ensures our last defense against any and all tyranny.

You have to actually know stuff to get right answers. Of course, there can be some gaming with multiple choice tests - which is where the SAT suffers - but they used to penalize wrong answers to somewhat account for that. Still, these standardized tests are pretty good measures, if not quite what they once were, due to caving to the whiners.

The fact is that actions speak louder than words and standardized test scores are more accurate than grades or claims from someone's mom.

As someone who's always been very good at standardized tests, I have to agree with you. I understand how they're put together, multiple choice is the easiest, and I always look at them as "hmm, I'm the question writer, how would I have built this one?"

I will maintain (and used to prove it with friends in different classes) that I can take a standardized multiple choice test in any non-technical college course and score at least a 70 without ever opening a book or spending a single hour in that class.

Essay tests can be either harder or easier - you've got to get to know the teacher/professor who's doing the grading. Once you know that, you just learn what all their pet academic fetishes are and you regurgitate those on paper, regardless of whether or not it has anything to do with the question that was asked. You'll always score a 95+ with that technique.

Really not too surprising. We all have good days, and not such good days, and in every endeavor. I joked that there are days at the plate where it's like hitting a beach ball with a guitar. I'm studying several languages now on Duolingo, and the phenomenon occurs. Some days, I'm jabbering away like a native. Other days, I'm on the "no tickee, no shirtee" plan.

The way scoring work on the SAT, incorrect answers are counted as negative values (-.25 iirc). So if you could eliminate two wrong answers, you were better off guessing.

That was basically my sole takeaway from an SAT prep course. That and like 5 practice exams that did what you mentioned.

451 You have to actually know stuff to get right answers. Of course, there can be some gaming with multiple choice tests - which is where the SAT suffers - but they used to penalize wrong answers to somewhat account for that. Still, these standardized tests are pretty good measures, if not quite what they once were, due to caving to the whiners.
---------------------------
Umm, not really. True/False and Multiple Choice Tests are not perfect. They are cheap to administer and grade. I saw this a lot with kids who went to big universities with +100 student classes. They saw nothing but T/F/Multi questions and could not converse orally or in writing well. This cost them a lot in terms of retention and advancement. Picking a right answer is not necessarily what you're seeking with education.

464 Essay tests can be either harder or easier - you've got to get to know the teacher/professor who's doing the grading. You'll always score a 95+ with that technique.

And that's part of the depressing stuff I was talking about.

There are some truely horrific implications that some of the current intelligence research shows with regards to genetics and IQ, particularly race and nature vs nurture. Stuff that will get you shitcanned or worse if you repeat it.

The important thing to remember is that intelligence is an ever Changing field and it's super slow to even get new research funded BECAUSE of some of that stuff. Nobody, government, corporate or academic is going to pay for research if there is even a possibility that the study could even be implausably used by racists or sexists.

Most of the funding for it comes from helping the disabled, and the normies get studied ONLY as a control group. That's how toxic a lot of the intelligence research is now a days. Think about that.

The really strange thing about what we call "intelligence" is that there are several different kinds, and many of them don't show up in a testing environment.

a good example - my wife will say she doesn't have a good memory, and doesn't do too well in academic "study the book, spit out the answers" type situations. However, without any effort at all she remembers all the lyrics to every song she's ever heard, including commercials when she was a kid in the 60's (that makes for a fun game) It's rather amazing.

"The important thing to remember is that intelligence is an ever Changing field and it's super slow to even get new research funded BECAUSE of some of that stuff. "

___________

All of the different "kinds" of intelligence are extremely correlated with 'g' general intelligence which IQ measures to the point that you can estimate one off of the other with astonishing accuracy.

Jordan Peterson has some videos on YouTube discussing some of these topics at length if you want to get your feet wet in the topic.

But like I said, it can be facinating, but bloody depressing stuff

Actually, that's probably the best age at which to administer IQ tests, before the person has a lot of learning, so you can measure native ability.

As mentioned above, everybody has good and bad days, and I suspect that they caught him on a bad day for that test.
Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at March 27, 2018 03:46 PM (rIXu3)
________
You can measure both "Native" liquid intelligence and "Accumulated" Crystallized intelligence.

They are correlated a lot because you have to have liquid intelligence to accumulate the crystalized form.

Of course if you sit around fapping all day, you might not no matter how smart you are.

515 I am pretty good at tests. SAT was a 1500 when that meant something. Two times I blew through the top on the IQ test score. One they gave it "over 150." One they guessed 212. One I got a real score on, it was 186.

However, I am pretty much a dumbass, so not sure what any of those mean.

Posted by: blaster at March 27, 2018 04:01 PM (Z5y53)

516 Those are shit SATs. I'd be concerned as a parent if my kid had a 4.2 and SATs like that.

Shit. My Sophomore took the SATs , without the essay, in order to practice and got a 1260. He says didn't even know how to do half the math.

Posted by: Lost My Cookies at March 27, 2018 04:02 PM (aRDaB)

517 The SAT changed its scoring scale again in 2016. The max score is 1600 again after being 2400 for about a decade. Hogg's score puts him somewhere in the 85-90 percentile of test takers. It's pretty common for the "elite brains" to have GPAs in the 4.5-5.0 range if they pile up the honors/AP classes, still, a 4.2 is more than respectable. If a 4.2/1260 doesn't get you into one of the UC schools (a state system), then something is fishy in the admittance department - but I guess that's no surprise. I'm sure Evergreen State would be happy to have him.

Posted by: ZonToro at March 27, 2018 04:06 PM (P0e9G)

518 Too funny. First, liddle Hogg's GPA and scores are not that impressive.
Worse, with the UC is that there is a whole bunch of SJW, GBLT/blacks/Dreamers, out of state and international students waiting in line for admission ahead of him with the same scores, but with bigly social justice factors.
White and Asian males get to compete against each other, and way too many of them have far higher scores, GPA, AP participation, sports and other activities.
Guaranteed the Cal Poly he speaks of is Pomona, no way would he make it into SLO, the best and hardest to get into campus in the Cal State system.
Hogg is nothing special, but anointed by the media. No doubt, Stanford or Harvard will send him an offer.

520 A final point, was at UC San Diego a few years ago, their average incoming SAT, GPA and AP participation was off the charts, like in the top 3%.
Even then, they could not admit all the students who wanted to get into the Jacobs School of Engineering and other top schools.
The UC system seems to be the favorite system for all of Asia as well as the top of CA and US High Schools. Cal, UCLA, UCSB and UCSD are incredibly popular with UCSD, Cal and UCLA with the best academic ratings.
No friggin way Hogg gets anywhere near those schools without special consideration as a minority.

Posted by: standfast24 at March 27, 2018 04:17 PM (PNFIr)

521 I see other people said what I was going to say - Hogg isn't good enough for the UC system.

My extermely minor claim to fame is that while I did not work on the recovery efforts after the BP deepwater Horizon fiasco, I know people who did. Same with the Cougar Ace screw up (lesser known).

Sorry, I stepped away to make chili. No carrots, because I'm a purist.

Very interesting. Did you study the psychology of intelligence, or is that just side reading? There are a lot of the Horde who have near expert proficiency in subjects not pertaining to their main area of work. It's part of why this place is so enjoyable.

I appreciate what you do for the rigs-that is not easy work.

No. You just realize that there's a lot you don't know. The older I get, the more I realize that. Young punks think they know all they need. The smart ones figure out very quickly that's not true. The others...well that's how we get this Hogg fellow.

Intelligence was a topic of extreme interested a few years ago when my neice was taking the SAT. Right now I'm reading a lot on Scott Adam's persuasion stuff.

As I mentioned earlier, There's plenty of You Tube videos by Jordan Peterson on intelligence research and it's implications if you want to get your feet wet. He is extremely articulate and easy to follow.

And yes, he's the same Jordan Peterson from the Cathy Newman interview featured on AoS a while back.

525 Hey David, my kid was admitted to UCSB, lots of surf, babes, parties and a terrific bar scene. He loved it and brought home some of the hottest co-eds his dad every saw. Academics were too tough though for board scores of 1270. Kind of arrogant of you to think 1270 gets you in.

Too bad you'll miss it.

Posted by: changey at March 27, 2018 06:12 PM (6xW7C)

526 This is completely FUBAR. How does the same person have that GPA and that SAT score?

It sounds like they're allowing a lot of non-academic enhancement to the GPA, making for high expectations and a mediocre outcome.

Posted by: epobirs at March 27, 2018 07:23 PM (AJKgl)

527 This was the same Hogg who was faking camera interviews in a closet at 9:30 AM in his own words when the shooting occurred at 2:30 PM.

And what teenaged high schooler has to go home for his camera when every freaking teen in America has a cell phone that shoots 1080p video?

And why in hell did the Broward Cowards let a kid with a camera wander through their crime scene?

Keep in mind CBS is the proud parent of the TANG Papers...

530 Sorry I'm so late to this thread but just felt the need to comment:

Let's see: non CA resident, white, male, and a 1270
SAT and he applied to UCLA? that's hilarious.

I would like to correct the person who claims a 1500 SAT is only a so-so score... Less than 2% of the people who take the SAT's score that high. It also seems like a few other people don't understand that the top score is no longer 2400 and it's back to 1600.
