Sean Trende of Real Clear Politics: The Establishment Wing and Its Chattering-Class Champions Are Absurd to Panic About The GOP Having a "Populist" Appeal

As I've said on this blog and off it, all successful GOP campaigns have had a populist appeal, and so too have almost all successful Democrat campaigns.

From his Twitter feed (@seantrende):

I think people who see Trumpism as something aberrant in the Republican Party haven't though much about the history of the Republican Party. Unless they're NeverTrumpers, in which case they're in a state of denial. 1/

Successful Republican campaigns and presidencies have *always* involved an integration of the party's populist and establishment wings. Nixon, Reagan, and to an extent W have all had ties to both wings, and balanced them well. 2/

The campaigns that have been heavily weighted toward the establishment track? Ford, H.W., Dole, Romney? Not so successful. 3/

With the exception of H.W.'s '88 campaign, which was of course a campaign for Reagan's third term. What Trump basically represents is the antithesis of Romney '12: a populist campaign without the establishment wing. 4/

Mid-to-longterm, I don't think this strategy works either, unless the populists find a way to build the cross-racial blue collar coalition that eluded the Post-CRA Southern Democrats. Good luck with that. 5/

But please, spare us the "taking the party back from Trumpism." The Republican Party completely cleansed of populist impulses is basically three upper middle class white guys in a think tank cubicle. 6/

and two of them are going to vote for Gary Johnson anyway. The answer, here and Europe, is to do what establishment groups in two-party systems have done with populist movements since the 1800s: synthesize. 7/

And if you can't do that, no problem, then you're a Democrat or an Independent. But neither party can survive without some kind of appeal to their populist base. It's delusional to suggest otherwise. 8/8

Establishment chatterer Matt K. Lewis agreed:

This is true--which is why Jeb and Kasich's messaging strategy didn't make much sense.

And Sean Trende agreed back:

@SeanTrende

*zero* sense. Republicans can't win long-term with just the white working class, but they can't win with just the suburbs, either.

I think it was Michael Brennan Dougherty (though I could be mistaken) who described the Establishment's/Ruling Class' demands as having become "immodest."

I like the understatement of that -- their demands became immodest.

At some point, the Establishment decided on a Judge Smails response to the "Hobbits" and "Wacko Birds" of the Tea Party: You'll get nothing and like it!

They considered themselves Masters of the Universe and believed they could just steamroll the non-Establishment part of the party using the same techniques their close cousins, the Liberal Establishment Class, used against conservatives: Denigration, contempt, and delegitmization intended to convince dissenters that it was the Establishment's way or the highway.

The GOP would be refashioned into a much-less conservative party in order to appeal to surburban married women who were swing voters between Democrats and Republicans. The more conservative, more populist elements of the party would simply be denigrated as Obama denigrated them, as backwards backwoods racists who need to be educated and socialized into a more liberal, suburban/urban elite view of the world.

This would win elections and, more importantly, it would please the GOP's own Establishment Ruling Class, which itself was more Urban Liberal in its orientation.

This group has always found the Tea Party and most conservatives socially embarrassing -- witness their strident defense of John Boehner and insistence that Tea Party riff-raff like Mark Meadows and Jim Jordan were too extreme and bumpkinish to ever serve as Speaker of the House -- and was very excited about the prospect of bringing the ill-trained dogs of Tea Party conservatism to heel and turning them into purse puppies.

This is, and always has been, much about class and less about policy. Witness Jen Rubin's whiplash-by-proxy heel-turns on virtually every policy claim she used to pretend to believe in order to locate herself firmly within the orthodoxy of her class. Policy means, apparently, relatively little to Jen Rubin, or Bret Stevens, or the next "super-conservative" to "evolve" in his office at The Atlantic; the overriding imperative is class loyalty and class conformity.

I shrieked for at least two years, from 2014 to 2016, about the coming GOP crack-up, and said a hundred times that while the Establishment had the current power to steamroll more conservative, more populist, and more rural voices to ram its own liberalish, establishment, and suburban/urban agenda down the rest of the party's throats, it would not retain that ability forever: Because you cannot treat your allies and your supposed political partners in the same way you treat your political enemies.

Of course you can treat your political enemies this way, telling them they'll have nothing and like it, and denigrating and delegitimizing them.

But somewhere along the way, the GOP Establishment began treating its actual enemies, the Democrat Party and liberal establishment, as their political allies (witness how easy Paul Ryan made it for the Democrats on the omnibus vote), and began treating their political allies/junior partners (only junior because the Establishment wouldn't treat them as full partners) as political enemies.

You can't treat your natural allies as enemies and expect them to remain allies.

A revolt was inevitable, but the #SmartSet which claims to Rilly Rilly Understand Politics could not understand this elemental point about politics -- that you share power in a coalition, you do not take all for yourself and tell your "partners" to suck it -- and could not foresee what was, to the Hobbits, Wackadoos, Deplorables and Bitter Clingers completely obvious and clear as day.

So we are where we are, and most of the "Smart People" in the party still don't understand why, more than two years after Trump's hostile takeover of the GOP.

But they're the Smart People and Experts. You should listen to the Smart People and Experts, even when it's obvious they're stupid, deranged, and ignorant, because they are the Smart People and Experts and what are you? Just a Deplorable Bitter Clinger who's forgotten to obey his betters.

Marriages take work -- political marriages especially. You can't constantly cheat on your partner and treat outsiders as more important, and try to win every single dispute and make every single decision within the marriage, and expect that marriage to survive.

This is obvious. But the #SmartSet is so damned smart and clever they fail to understand the simplest, most obvious things.

16 I had an interesting experience in church yesterday. The wife and I were sitting with some friends. They're very good people. Then another friend approached the pew and they all began chatting about the march downtown, and their observations. It was clear that it never occurred to them that we might not be on board with their politics.

I spoke up, and asked them some simple questions about their position, i.e. ARs are bad and evil. They clearly hadn't thought about it at all. I suppose it was for the best that the service started.

Problem Solution Outcome

Economy Stimulus $9T spent to grow Econ
Health Care Obamacare All 23 Co ops have failed
____________________

Do you see that article about the recent academic study done to try and determine how many U.S. bankruptcies are actually caused by unpaid medical bills?

The answer: 4%

Obamacare was something the government had to pass, because millions of Americans were DYING and going BANKRUPT from lack of health insurance.

The Great Scholar, Fauxcahontas Lizzy Warren had "proven" this by authoring a study showing that more than half of all U.S. bankruptcies were due to unpaid medical bills!

Problem was that Lizzy's methodology was totally bogus: she had attributed every bankruptcy where there was one unpaid medical bill, no matter how insignificant, to lack of health insurance. A bankrupt person could have $5,000,000 in mortgage and credit card and gambling debts, but if they had one unpaid $75 doctor bill, Lizzy declared it a medical bankruptcy.

But congress, and the media, insistently parroted Warren's bullshit claim that half of U.S. bankruptcies are caused by unpaid medical bills to justify the hideous Obamacare scam.

Now, when it's too late and millions of people have been harmed by Obamacare, we find out that the actual number of U.S. bankruptcies caused by medical bills is a measly 4%.

158 9 Well, Jeb was as boring as a plank and Kasich was into hugging. So yeah, they were not going to happen.
Posted by: IC at March 26, 2018 05:39 PM (a0IVu)

It was worse than that.

The GOP Patrician Class wanted its cheap gardeners and maids, and actually convinced itself that the GOPlebians would not mind as long as the tax cuts kept flowing and the economy kept growing.

Worse still, they deluded themselves into believing that the people they imported were "natural Conservatives".

But worked in the Bush family didn't work in the nation as a whole.

Prediction: George P. Bush, Jeb's son, is being groomed and prepped for primaries 2024, and he will try to restore the Bush dynasty, with a new ethnic flavor.

159 >>>Because you cannot treat your allies and your supposed political partners in the same way you treat your political enemies.

That's the problem - According to McConnell/Ryan, I AM the enemy, much more so than Schumer or Pelosi. They've been very clear about that. Judging from this latest spending bill, which the Republicans "negotiated" from a position of power, what actual difference would be made if the Dems ran Congress? Maybe Planned Parenthood would get $600 million instead of $500 million to murder and dismember children for fun and profit? There's only one true party in Washington, and I despise it as much as it despises me.

162 "This is obvious. But the #SmartSet is so damned smart and clever they fail to understand the simplest, most obvious things."

About the most profound thing I've read on this blog.

What many folks don't seem to understand, is that most things ARE simple.

Those who try to make them complex, are trying to deny reality... or trying to use sophistry to convince you that you have no idea what is going on.

Lets look at... oh.. Global Warming... it ain't happening... not for years.... and CO2 has been shown to not be a driver of warming anyway...

But since its a simple concept that CO2 is not and cannot be driving warming (ie, that all the energy it can absorb, is already being absorbed).. they create a much more complicated thesis... that is unproven.. and is so complicate (ducting) that no one can understand it...

Now.. why can't we understand it? maybe because it makes no sense? Because they are trying to make things so complex, that the argument becomes 'it's complicated'....

Same with a lot of politics.... same with a lot of economics...

I think he'll be working with Trump on Iran as well because I saw something today that said Trump is going to scrap the deal in the next two weeks.

I'd say the chances of a war with Iran are very slim. Trump knows the country isn't going to tolerate another war in the sandbox.

In California, once you get into the more rural areas, you actually deal with more normal people.

The burbs USED to be bastions of Conservatism, but the Military Aerospace Electronic Complex folded up when the Cold War was won.

In the Urban areas we have (1) the "Watermelons" who practice eco-lunacy for us but not for them, and (2) the Lavenders, NTTAWWT, but their politics tend to be as reamed as their sphincters, and (3) the New Whitey Hating Ethnics, who have been the shock troops for the Left. These make up what has become a Demunist Commiecrat Party.

239 You know, my guess is 80% of Americans want there to be a wall at the Mexican border. Will it stop illegals? probably not. Will it stop drugs? probably not.

Then what is its purpose?

The purpose is to show that you give a shit about us. We want it to KNOW that we are serious about this shit and not play acting, as we have been, the last 30 years.

because let's face it. A lot of republican establishment types are A-okay with illegal immigration. Sure, it creates all sorts of problems for us, normal people. But it suppresses wages, and controls inflation, and provides lots of maids, hookers, and gardeners. All good stuff. And democrats want more voters. And republicans are kinda, sorta okay with that, because they don't want to be seen as mean guys.

I love the term 'purse puppies'--someone following the Diversity and Comics guy on YouTube coined the term, and it fits perfectly: that token group you adopt and show off to establish political bona fides. The purse puppy must remain silent unless told to speak and is required to perform the occasional trick on demand.

Now ~ as to the GOPe ~ they are going to find out, in a big way that f*cking with the populist wing will destroy them because, in a democracy we have another name for "populism" . . . it's called: "majority rule" and you cannot win a democratic election without it ~ for feck's sake.

Since when did: "this idea gets a majority vote!" become: "evil 'populism'"?

Populism my *ss.

Well, it had to be coincidence that the pallet of $175 billion in cash went to Iran under Obama's order.

It was supposed to go to Chicago to pay for his library.

And on a related note, Congress is required to approve spending.

How the Eff did Obama get $175 Billion in CASH without Congressional approval?

Compared to that, $20 Billion for a Wall is chump change. And I like Ann Coulter's plan, call it a national security issue and build it with the military money just approved by the Santa Claus Pig Congress.

Watch them squeal like the fat hogs they are.

327 I'm as disgusted about the spending bill as anyone here. The problem is the Senate, not the House. The House has sent over plenty of conservative spending bills. And then they die in the Senate. Hate for Ryan is misdirected. I'm not saying he doesn't deserve some heat, because he does. But his job as Speaker is to move the agenda of his party forward. 332 What people don't realize it by removing the GOPe from the GOP it will have a domino effect on the Democrat Party.

What do the Democrats do?

1. Will they become a big tent party and thus make their own base unhappy by taking lots of money from corporations and wealthy donors.

2. Will the Democrat base become so unhappy they leave their own party?

3. Will the Democrats instead go hard left to please their base, thus driving the big money donors and corporations back to the GOP now firmly in control of the hobbits?

Here is a good example, Keith Ellison is talking again about a maximum wage. It is a idiotic idea from a economic standpoint, however lets look at this politically. Lets say the Dem base starts to demand this, what will the big donors and corporations do? They will try to prevent it by donating to the Democrats who are against it, but that will inflame the Democrat base who want their max wage.

I get a feeling at some point the companies and wealthy donors would be forced to accept a $300 dollar an hour max salary, or give up their social justice desires and accept a hobbit run GOP.

It is important that the big tech firms, corporate America, and wealthy elites in general make up their mind: Money or SJW crusade. It was always going to be a strained relationship between corporate America and leftwing SJWs. Might as well make them face up to it sooner rather than later.

Important: We only accept them back in if they give up the SJW crap. Then we will ditch the salary max nonsense. If not, then stand back and let them live with a $300 dollar an hour salary. See how they like being sold out for something we want. At least they will now have less money to donate to Dems and other left wing causes. When you look at what Ellison wants, it is a win-win for us.

349 "162 "This is obvious.

362 I've long felt that the Tea Party/Republican populists/"Don't tread on Me" crowd ought to consciously organize as a distinct entity within the Republican party. For working purposes here, call it the Liberty Wing of the GOP.

Establish a charter of some sort as a rallying point based on Constitutional basics and federalism. Work to get some Congresscritters on board. Who knows, if we got enough on board, they might become a strong voting bloc. And if that bloc becomes big enough, some possibilities present themselves:

- Get enough in the House, and you might be able to replace Ryan. Get enough, and you could threaten to go independent, resulting in Speaker Pelosi. That would be some leverage.

- Get enough in the Senate, and you could similarly threaten to make McConnell the minority leader.

- Finally, if the Liberty Wing becomes big enough and confident enough, and if the GOPe remains intransigent and DC in general continues to circle the drain, it might provide the springboard to a third party. And if the Liberty Wing charter is rational and sensible, you might pull in some moderate Dems who aren't happy with their party's increasingly leftward drift.
