Rand Paul: Maybe "Holding Hands" With Democrats on Laws and Budgets Isn't Such a Great Idea

No I'm sure it's a fantastic idea, the best.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) blasted Republicans for "holding hands" with Democrats over a massive funding bill signed into effect this week that he criticizes for skyrocketing the national debt and failing to deliver on key Republican agenda items.

"The debt is up over a trillion the Dow is down...Maybe the GOP holding hands Democrats isn’t such a great idea," the libertarian-leaning senator said on Twitter Saturday.

Paul live-tweeted his attempt to read through the behemoth 2,232-page omnibus spending package on Friday. Congress only had a few hours between the release of the bill and its passage before a Friday night government funding deadline.

A few questions:

1. Why was the House bill written to be already acceptable to the RINOs and Red State Democrats in the Senate? Shouldn't the House, allegedly more conservative than the Senate (though they're starting to look the same to me), make its position further to the right and make the Senate come towards it a little?

2. Why not present a more conservative budget to the Senate, and make the RINOs and especially the Red State Democrats up for re-election in a year and a half either vote for it or vote against it and cause a shutdown, and then explain to their voters why they wouldn't vote for military pay raises and the wall?

Are Republicans even interested in beating Democrats any longer, or are they deliberately trying to throw the election?

11 Ryan is incapable of leading. He didn't want a fight in the party over spending priorities, or to take a stand against rebellious members on the left.

Liberal republicans would prefer a Dem majority to a conservative one.

Anti-Trump Republicans wanted to humiliate Trump by forcing him to either sign a massive spending bill or take the blame for shutting down the government.

They clearly don't want to enact anything they ran on, so it's a win-win situation for them.

I used to think that republican lawmakers would be afraid of being primaried out of a job by a well organized conservative resistance. Then came the realization that as long as the political establishment existed that had little influence. Preserving the establishment was the No.1 priority. If you lost your seat then it was simply time to move over to K street or the think tank circuit or board level multinational business and trade political power for wealth.

25 Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, etc. With only 51 seats in the Senate and the useless McCain on sick leave, whatever budget that passes has to be acceptable to each and every one of those turds.

So, instead of trying to get the hardliners on the right on board, they make a deal with the Dems.

I would rather see the fight play out, with the government "shutdown" happening, but the spineless GOP wants none of that.

30 My fundamental issue with this entire fiasco is that nobody made an argument against the bill.

No person, and that includes the president, took their case, a case very easy to lay out, that the bill is a bunch of garbage and the real losers were the American people.

I would have had more respect for Trump if he came out a week ago and said "this bill is a pile of shit, and here is why...". Fill that "why" with all the funds for other countries borders, money for China, Planned Parenthood and then in typical Trump style tell them what is not in there, in that two foot stack of paper, like money for the wall, and then tell them- "clean it up or it's going to be vetoed".

Congress just hid it. They dumped and ran. They suck much more.

Therein lies the problem.

The Congress has not passed a budget since April 29, 2009.

Budgeting has to be comprehensive.

In any other normal human being where the brain serves as a vital organ, the tumor would have killed the patient by now.

Since John McCain has a Senator's brain, that is, an atrophied brain that serves like a vestigial appendage, he is still alive.

If he had ass cancer, given that the ass of a Senator is so important must always be covered, he would have been dead by now.

My only disagreement is with your use of the present tense. This bill HAS THROWN the midterms, at least for the House. I know people will explain why people shouldn't think that way, explain the lesser of two weevils, and all that. But that is irrelevant to my point. There is undoubtedly some number of conservatives who will be so pissed off or demoralized as not to show up in Nov (and not to work or contribute between now and then) as to make an already dangerous situation unwinnable in many districts. And that's all it takes.

Remember Alabama? It really isn't enough to say "You SHOULD vote for our guy". You have to make people willing to do so, and every single vote you discourage counts nowadays.

Alas, we are all cucks now.

If 50% of the Republican electorate had voted then for the conservative/libertarian party candidates instead, we wouldn't have a GOPe that believes they can do whatever the hell they want...and it was *obvious* to everyone Mittens was going to lose after the second debate.

But...people said that was too crazy then.

And finally people woke up in 2016...sort of. And Trump scared the hell out of the GOPe...but the GOPe believes if they had congress to the Dems the latter can impeach Trump for them (and Pence, while not a bad guy, doesn't have much of a backbone...)

Roy would be in whatever party is in power, if MO were a Dem dominated state he would be one and he would say whatever he needed to to get elected each year. Roy and every Senator like Roy are the problem, they are in place to sell out and enrich themselves. They could give a flying fuck for smaller government, deficits, or conservative principles.

124 ace, you just restated in specific form the whine/challenge/question I've been posing (and at the WH, not just Hill GOP) for months.

The essence of competitive politics is differentiation - forcing choices on your opponents, compelling them to take positions on issues that may affect voters at election time.

Since 2009, there has been an amazing, disastrous disappearance of this basic currency of politics on the Hill. Which can only happen through active or passive connivance of both sides.

The GOP promised return of regular order years ago (consideration of 12 approps bills individually). This is not only the constitutional approach, it restores proper presidential power, and forces all of Congress to make accountable choices.

What you describe ace is even *worse* that what we've had - even with an omnibus CR, normal House/Senate dynamics apply, and the House should/could have delivered a zinger of a CR to the Senate. Instead ..... we got an almost implausibly bad confirmation of the wackiest "uniparty" allegations.

My fundamental issue with this entire fiasco is that nobody made an argument against the bill.

No
person, and that includes the president, took their case, a case very
easy to lay out, that the bill is a bunch of garbage and the real losers
were the American people.

I would have had more respect for
Trump if he came out a week ago and said "this bill is a pile of shit,
and here is why...". Fill that "why" with all the funds for other
countries borders, money for China, Planned Parenthood and then in
typical Trump style tell them what is not in there, in that two foot

The appropriations process is where the actual policy gets made real. Every big issue was directly engaged.

So - you maximize differentiation, pressure on vulnerable Dems. Some drama and conflict help attract attention to key issues and incumbents (you may even recall a day when that was common).

There will be yet another bite at this apple, starting .... um, now. For the next FY budget. In time for the mid-terms. We will see. But this was an easy, easy, obvious opportunity to launch a full-scale assault on about 10 Senate Dems, and the Dem party as a whole.

Trump is our last best hop to correct that, though you could perhaps be optimist that now that the issue is established in the public forum it won't go away completely after trump passes through.

Blending socialism and corporatism is the textbook definition of fascism. It's not new. Obamacare is the best example. Private health insurance still exists, and prospers as long as it does exactly what the government says. Patients suffer, of course. Obama promised us socialized medicine, what he delivered is fascist medicine.

I saw this coming a mile away. We've had the same primary system for years. It favors whoever is more unified in the primaries. It lets you save your resources for the runoff and get your narrative started while the other side is beating each other to a pulp. That setup can bite you in the ass if your party is a loosely bound coalition of grievance groups. If the CA Repubs were smart (yeah, I know), they'd be researching elections over here. You can cause a lot of mischief and heartburn if you're savvy about candidate selection and recruitment.

240 I saw this coming a mile away.

By saying that we (Republicans) got what we wanted, which is more for the military, and they (Democrats) got what they wanted, it kind of reinforced the belief by many that Republicans don't care about "people," but just the military. For example, Trump's been talking about addressing the opioid crisis and there were funds set aside for that (Schumer talking about it). It's always a case of estimates when it comes to those who aren't apprehended, but BP estimates the overall crossing volume has returned, more or less, to close to the levels of the disastrous summer of 2016.

This receives no attention, of course. The lack of border security continues to be a disaster, but a measurable portion of those who are not insane overall on immigration policy persist with their illiterate indifference to such security, and of course the deranged opposition continues undiminished.

Pretty good proxy for how suicidally unserious the country is. The populace overall recognizes the need and supports establishing a border. The "leadership" just refuses to let it happen.

285 Before the Enlightenment, men had whatever rights they had. Kings had whatever rights they had, nobles and commoners and slaves the same.

When the English started considering human rights, they knew that rights given by men could not work, so they were out of our hands, given by God or a Creator, and a man's obligation to observe them.

Atheists believe rights can only be given by man, because there is can be no proven agent of them that can pass a evidenciary test that God cannot. Even pro-rights atheists have basically arrived to the point that rights are "agreed upon" by man--they just think they're really, really good decisions. Although no intellectual (and here's why) Bill Maher thinks they're obvious (Appeal to Obviousness is little more than an unsubstantiated ad Populum--even to the extent that people who can't see the obviousness have mental flaws)

So there is no doubt that under the popularity of atheism man appeals to man and the mechanisms of agreement to curry for those things that he wants "right" to himself. Socialism and Fascism are such mechanisms. Socialism is an unsupportable quasi-materialist theoretical equality and Fascism is what happens when the smiley approach doesn't work--or outright tyranny.

A people who have lost the ability to believe in the sanctity of the process cannot avoid the commodifying of "rights" and the agitation for positioning.

Its totally unreal. Among the millions of stories of stupidity I could tell, the one clusterfuck was trying to get a wheel chair for my father at the airport. The dude is going to be 80 this year, yet he walked the streets of rome, he walked the streets of pompeii, and he walked the streets of capri, most times in the rain. By the end of the trip his knees were a little sore, so I figured maybe get him a chair so we can get through the airport, because over there you walk out side to the plane and climb up the stairs. I wasn;t sure he was going to be able to do it. The chair was arranged ahead of time for every stop, and there was no chair when we got there. It took forever to get one, and finally we gave up. Get to America, after sitting 8 hours like a pretzel, and no chair, so he walked anyway. You know who did have the chair? Germany. The dude was fast, and would NOT take a tip. He waved his finger and said NO. Thank god he was there, because Frankfurt has an asteroid size airport.

I watched idiots on the plane get out of their seat and pull out carry on luggage out of the over head RIGHT in front of the flight attendants coming down the isles with drink carts. I watched assholes leaning on the frigging airplane door emergency handles while waiting for the bathroom. I spent 2 weeks watching complete fucking retards going about their business completely clueless to the world around them. All this just on the flight home.
The planet is doomed.

You are correct about average intelligence going down. IQs worldwide are plummeting. A lot of that is because of demographic shifts -

You are dead wrong about Humans going extinct. All animals are far far far stupider than the stupidest of humans and they are doing just fine population wise

You could knock human intelligence down to retardation levels on an entire continent and the population of that continent would go up because it takes intelligence to plan ahead and use birth control. It takes intelligence to have the willpower to not slut around and get knocked up at 16.

It may seem counter intuitive, but as humans get dumber their numbers go up.

So human numbers will be a-ok. But they will be highly numbered useless humans. Unable to perform the works of Shakespeare & Newton. Derp & more Derps.

You're not getting any Thomas Sowells or Steve Jobs out of those Humans.
