Thursday night ONT

Good evening fellow Morons, how is everyone? I'm back! What's it like to be back, you ask?

Why Is Walking on the Surface of the Earth Any Less Miraculous Than Flying Above It?
I had bookmarked this article a coupe of weeks ago. I know I had some thoughts about it that I wanted to share. What were those thoughts? Who knows? I certainly don't, and I'm in no shape to figure it out. So here! Philosophy link!

Genius!

Vox explains that more young people die from gunshots than from diseases that don't primarily affect the young. Did you also know that more dogs die from distemper than from drowning while attempting to circumnavigate the globe?

Clarksville tornado: 250 volunteers overflow signup sheets for storm debris cleanup

A natural disaster strikes. The next day, more volunteers to help show up than they have room for. That's my America.

Good Question

When Will We Have the Guts to Link Fatherlessness to School Shootings?

This article pairs well with something that Jesse Kelly wrote the other day.

Related: Women are doing it all themselves - so why are we so unhappy?

Maybe tossing away thousands of years of carefully developed societal standards on a whim wasn't such a good idea after all. Who could have known?

When Hurricane Ivan passed through here, City water was lost for days. The Red Cross brought in semis loaded with pallets of bottled water. The problem was that there was no way to get out to all of the distribution points.

The local talk radio station (WWNC) put out the word that volunteer help was needed. When I arrived at the Red Cross center in my truck, there were vehicles of every sort lined up at the semis, loading up with cases of water to transport.

It's as if he's forgotten why people voted for him. It wasn't because they wanted more military spending, which is LESS important than securing our border.

I remember they said 3 things:

1. If any passersbys had said "Don't do it!" or shown they had given a shit, they would not have jumped.

2. May people driving past did the exact opposite - they yelled out of their windows "Do it! Jump!" (Ah, those compassionate San Fran progs.)

3. The millisecond after they jumped, they all instantly regretted jumping. And it hurt like hell to hit the water.

150 WARNING: Wall o' Text

"Not everyone understands the difference between a kitten and a cub. Two Genus of cats exist; Felidae (true cats and most small wild cats) and Panthera (tiger, lion, jaguar and leopard). The Cheetah is Felidae, and subfamily Felinae, Acinonyx jubatus. Actually, panther technically refers to every cat in the genus Panthera. Yet, it usually refers to the black panther. A melanistic jaguar or melanistic leopard and also the Florida panther, a subspecies of the cougar. Interestingly, the cougar is genus Felidae. So you see how this can get quite confusing. Still, a mystery is how some confuse a leopard spotted cat as a tiger. The term ‘Big Cat’ is quite often used to refer to the Panthera genus.
Servals

The serval is Felis Serval. Also sometimes referred to as Leptailurous serval and falls into the ‘most small wild cat’ definition. Despite enormous differences in size, the various species of cat are quite similar in both structure and behavior, with the exception of the cheetah, which is significantly different from any of the big or small cats. Scientifically the difference between whether a cat offspring is a kitten or a cub is determined by whether or not the parent roars or purrs.
Big Cats

Roaring. The ability to roar comes from an elongated and specially adapted larynx and hyoid apparatus. When air passes through the larynx on the way from the lungs, the cartilage walls of the larynx vibrate This produces sound. The lion’s larynx is longest, giving it the most robust roar. All Panthera cats have elastic sections on both sides of the hyoid bone, a structure which supports the tongue and its muscles. The elastic hyoid, combined with the fibro-elastic tissue on top of the big cats’ undivided vocal folds, acts like a slide trombone, enabling the big cats to roar. BIG CATS CAN ONLY PURR WHEN BREATHING OUT.
Small Cats

The smaller cat species have kittens, not cubs because they purr. The hyoid of smaller cats is solid bone. These cats can purr when breathing both in and out, but they can’t roar. Cougars purr. Cheetahs purr. The ‘big cats’ chuff but cannot purr. As a future reference, the Genus Panthera; i.e. tigers, lions, jaguars, and leopards roar, chuff and give birth to CUBS. The Genus Felidae, house cats of all breeds, all small wild cats such as serval, Asian leopard cat, sand cat, cougar, caracal and the like, purr and their babies are called KITTENS.

They all purr. Panthera only purr when breathing out. Roaring is based on a frequency not given.

They prattle on about "sexism" and all their other -isms, and they have no idea what any of those -isms truly are. They make me sick.

"Equality of pay?" Honey, where did you get your MBA , and how many sixty, eighty hour weeks did you work? I didn't have the first, but I did a bunch of the second. And I quickly realized it wasn't worth it.

I saw an opportunity and I grabbed it. I could have retired with a nice little nest egg. Instead, I owned and ran my own business for sixteen years. Every penney I owned and more went into that bookstore, and it was more than worth it. And being a woman didn't slow me down the least little bit. (But Obummer's economy finally finished me off.)

And, I might add, I did it while married, with four kids. I'm still married (forty-seven years and counting), and all four of my kids are still on speaking terms with me.

Hmmm. I had to look up Alfalfa from Our Gang. Name was Carl Switzer. He's dead, Jim. Got shot dead in 1959. Right in the dick/groin.

He had become a dog trainer/breeder. Some dog he was training got lost, and he offered a $35 reward. Some character named Moses Something found the dog, and returned it. Alfalfa paid them $35 and bought him $15 worth of drinks to boot at a bar where Switzer also worked.

A few days later, Alfalfa and one of his buds decided that Moses had ripped 'em off, and ought to have returned that dog had not accepted that $50 total. So they went to the house Moses was staying out to call him out.

They got in the door under false pretenses, then started a fight.

Alfalfa ended up getting shot, right in the dick. Bled out. It was ruled self-defense, but there was some controversy as Alfalfa just had pen knife he had pulled or something.

Representative Huizenga,

Your "yes' vote to approve this spending bill was irresponsible and disgraceful.
It is an abdication of fiscal responsibility on par with nearly every Democrat office-holder.

Why aren't you urging your fellow House Members, both in word and deed, to return to regular order, and submit proper appropriation bills?

Republicans control the House, Senate, and White House. The actions of you and your Republican colleagues voting 'yes' in this matter have confirmed to me that these members of the GOP are WORSE than the Democrats, since your actions are a betrayal of your stated principles. At least the Democrats come right out and say they want to spend recklessly.

I expect you to represent your district with more fiscal prudence in the future, and hold to the principles you claim to have when you campaign.

I got those numbers (for 2014) and for the exact age group ... but they aren't the raw numbers and they don't break the "gun deaths" into suicides and homicides. They just list the overall suicide rate (which is high) and the overall rate "killed by firearm" (suicide and homicide).

Of course, they don't break them down correctly because they really don't want anyone even able to pull the gun homicides from the suicides too easily ... as that would ruin all their hard work massaging the categories for best "headline" purposes, lefty-wise.

But, clearly, the vast, vast, vast majority of gun homicides of youth are in the inner cities. I think the suburbs tend to specialize in the gun suicides.

Black Lives Matter protesters blocked Interstate 5 in Sacramento for more than 30 minutes during Thursday evening's commute.

Protesters stopped traffic in both the northbound and southbound lanes before being funneled onto the northbound I-5. The interstate, near the I Street and J Street exits reopened by 6 p.m.

Protesters are now marching through downtown Sacramento again, heading to the State Capitol.

The protesters are rallying against the deadly police shooting of Stephon Clark.

Sacramento police officers were searching for someone who was breaking into cars Sunday night when they confronted Clark in the backyard of his grandparents' home.

Officers called for Clark to stop and show his hands before one of them shouted, "gun, gun, gun." The officers then opened fire on Clark, firing a total of 20 rounds, Sacramento police said.

Though to be honest, yes, some of my peers are lefty libs, but not to the point that we cannot maintain a professional decorum (read U of Texas grads), the A&M and TCU grads aren't as bad and the U of Minnesota grad runs a top notional ranked ACDEC team year after year.

269 A few days later, Alfalfa and one of his buds
decided that Moses had ripped 'em off, and ought to have returned that
dog had not accepted that $50 total. So they went to the house Moses was
staying out to call him out.

They got in the door under false pretenses, then started a fight.

Alfalfa ended up getting shot, right in the dick. Bled out. It
was ruled self-defense, but there was some controversy as Alfalfa just
had pen knife he had pulled or something.

295 I have a few Tengrist friends. Their afterlife is actually pretty nice. You die, and go to the Other World, where your spirit-horse (your counterpart in the spirit world; your fate is tied to its. What happens to you here affects it there, and vice versa) greets you. You saddle up and ride the steppe for all eternity, living there as you did here. Very peaceful.

305 Lot of people upset at Trump for the shit spending bill...not sure why--did Trump campaign as a fiscal conservative?

And if we abandon him over this, cui bono?

I'll say it again: I voted for Trump knowing that he was sure to do a lot of things I'd hate, but also that there was a chance he'd do some things I liked. He's come through on the latter more than anyone could plausibly argue any other GOP stooge in his position would, so now it's time to brace up and realize that the alternative is throwing him to the media wolves...and then where will we be?

Don't think that the Dems are going to go any easier on us all if Trump goes down sooner than later. you've all heard the Hilary rants recently, and you know they're just waiting to pounce and gut us all. Trump is an extremely imperfect leader for us to have, but dammit he's the last line of defense against the Progressive-GOPe mob that will be out for blood.

The Toronto Police report finding a man's body in the Don River, near Edwards Gardens. The dead man's name will not be released until his family has been notified.

The victim apparently drowned due to excessive marijuana consumption.

He was wearing black fishnet stockings, a red garter belt, a pink G-string, a strap-on dildo, purple lipstick, and a "Re-Elect Trudeau" T-shirt. He also had a cucumber in his rectum.

The police removed the Trudeau T-shirt to spare his family any unnecessary embarrassment.

376 218 Donna the Ampersand Queen -- That's another reason I bugged out of the corporate world. I was sick to death of the back biting, the empire building, the culture of personality, and the sheer stupidity of my then current job. But the mere idea of going out on another round of job interviews made me want to puke. Since I had already worked in the book selling world and there's nobody so loves books for me, I decided to start my own store. It was wonderful! I no longer had to hear that if field personnel (that would be us who actually dealt with real customers) would just shut our mouths and did what Home Office (that would be those who never even talked to a real customer in their entire lives), life would be perfect and the company would be raking in more money than the accountants could count.

I'll be the first to admit, I couldn't have done it without the inheritance my grandparents left me as seed money. I know there are a lot of people who have had to put their dreams aside because they had no practical way of starting. But with six and a half years of actual bookselling under my belt, and a few bucks in my hand, I went for it. I already knew who the major players were in the distributing field, I knew how books were inventoried, and I sure as hell l knew how not to run a bookstore. I subleased the back wall of a used electronic game store (I knew the kid's father who was heavily invested in the kid's business) and never looked back.

Donna, you have my sympathy with the resume writing and the LinkedIn page. I never had to worry about anything like LinkedIn or wonder what the Hell a prospective employer was digging around the net looking for on me.

Best of luck to you.

We just rediscovered a part of our family history Tuesday. I was looking at something online about the Civil War and found an escutcheon depicting one of my ancestors.

After Dad died, when we probated his estate, it turned up missing. No record of what happened, just gone.

I was perusing some items in an antique shop and there it was. Older daughter and I are going to Mass and retrieve it next week. Gonna cost me $350, down from $500. Kinda pissed I have to buy back something stolen from us, but at least it's home again.

The individual involved is a bit of a badass, having fought in and survived Bull Run, Antietam, Cold Harbor, Gettysburg and being captured in Bethesda for a stint at Andersonville Prison.

After he as mustered out he came home and spent his life being a carpenter.
We have some stuff he made that is as solid as the day it was crafted.

I'd love to have met him.

And how come there's no job for the left foot, now? They took the convenient high-beam switch off the floor and put it on the steering column so now the left foot just sits around and causes trouble because it's bored.

Shame. I used to love driving a manual. I'm sure some EPA or CAFE reg will make them totally illegal, soon. The shit they force on cars these days is annoying as all hell. And I haven't noticed the gas mileages being that much better than 30 years ago. I have a new Ford Escape and the thing gets less than 20 mpg ... with a friggin 4 cyl engine. And it's not even a big car - barely an SUV. My old 2005 Escape was getting 17 mpg with a 6 cyl, and a larger car.

I have paddle shifters on my wheel (it took me a while to figure out what the hell they were as I expected the shifting buttons to be on the auto stick, where they belong) but they are kind of weird. And since they're on the wheel they turn with the wheel so you can't really downshift in a turn since you - well, I - lose track of which one is which. And they just don't seem to work like I think they should, anyway. Not much fun, at all.

One thing I absolutely DESPISE is this start-stop crap that Ford forces on me. The engine shuts itself off every time I stop, basically. The sales guy kept trying to tell me how much I would like this and I told him to just stop talking. I figured that I would turn the switch off, though, and not be bothered by it ... but NOOOOO .... Ford won't let me do that. I have to turn that fvcker off every single time I start the engine. I think they do that so they can lie a little more on the mileage stats. Infuriating.

Of course, he's going to say that. Geeze, how else is he going to make his base feel empowered than by suddenly "discovering" their opposition to the bill, and changing tack to veto it? It's theater, man.
Remember how you were convinced he wasn't going to fire McCabe, until, suddenly, he did, at the literal 11th hour?

512 have paddle shifters on my wheel (it took me a while to figure out what the hell they were as I expected the shifting buttons to be on the auto stick, where they belong) but they are kind of weird.

The upside is that the starter is beefed up for that crap. I can stop having to turn it off each time by driving in sport mode, which is okay. Up to now, though, I've just turned the switch off each time - sometimes only when I stop and hear the engine stop - and curse Ford a little, but my mileage is so unimpressive that I think I'm just going to start driving it in sport mode all the time and see how much worse it gets. They advertised 22 mpg in the city and I drive in a very suburban/country area. I'm just barely squeezing 19mpg out of it, with a very soft gas pedal. I can't imagine how bad the mileage would be if I were still in the city. Sheesh.

Heh. As a teenager, I got a ride in a brand new '67 Camaro Z-28 with the hi-po 302 in it. A school buddy's older brother had bought it to export to England, and took us out for a ride. We went straight up 22nd Street in West Vancouver, which is a very steep hill, at over 90 miles an hour; must have caught some air on the cross avenues.

Canadian Pacific Railway used to have a "Car-Go-Rail" service. You would drive to the railway station, a (union, natch) hand would drive it onto a transporter car, and hopefully secure it, and you would board a passenger car for your trip across country. It never caught on. Really no faster than a banzai cross-country drive, and often inexplicable delays in places like Field, or Moose Jaw, but you could not exit the train to explore, because duration of delay unknown. And it was no cheaper than driving on your own. I think corporate relocations made up the bulk of their business.

Have you ever watch the Apollo astronauts do either on a whim on the Moon? In fact, because the surface friction is so low due to the reduced gravity of the Moon, it is easier and faster fly.

If Elon Musk ever lands people of Mars, they will live in an in-between situation. Mars' gravity is a bit stronger than the Moon's but much less than the Earth's. That will definitely affect them. Will they listen to the wisdom of Dorothy Gale, "There's no place like home."

Now that the "hero" of Facebook is being exposed as a schlub, Will Elon Musk be next? He has told people he is having pay him boatloads of money to fly them to Mars, that they will probably die. How is that different than asking Jews to pay the Nazis for the chance to take a shower?

I fell for the marketing bullshit about the Bacon King burger from Booger King. Yuck! The local BK franchise is putting about a third of the bacon promised in the advertising on their sandwiches. You get more bacon on a equally nasty Jack in the Box bacon burger.

688 When it comes to Burger King, I don't know if this is a national trend or just my local store: It used to be when you ordered at BK, your burger was fresh off the grill and assembled 'your way' (I know this because I worked at a BK while in college and was often stuck slapping frozen burgers onto the 'chain' grill when we had customer rushes). But my local BK now does the 'precook the burgers and stick 'em in a holding tray' thing, nuking the burger to reheat it before assembly when the customer makes an order. That's just like McDonald's now. Mickey D's no longer has a warming area under a heat lamp of wrapped pre-made burgers so you got it 'their way' unless special ordered, and that always took lots amount of time (no pickles for me). Now, the burgers are removed from a warming tray and assembled to order.

It used to be BK was better than McD's because the burgers were hot off the chain grill and assembled per order. Now they're both basically the same crap, with no actual difference between them. Even their marketing icons are no different: A creepy clown or a creepy king.

To sum up: Chinese take-out FTW!

For $10, I can get a freshly prepared Chinese take-out meal (with enough for leftovers the next day) and, depending on what I order, can even get a soup with that $10.

It used to be BK and McD's were cheap fast food alternatives. But not so much anymore. For some of the burger prices/meals at those two chains, one could go to something like a Red Robin and have a sit down meal.

Oh, and that's why my shadow never crosses the threshold of a Little Caesar's store. They do the same thing as BK and McD's but with pizza: Pre-cooked and stuck in a warmer. That's why they have quick pizza take-out, usually less than five minutes, beating both BK and McD's when it comes to customer in-line wait times.

But fast is definitely not always a good thing when it comes to prepared food.

Her book sales go to charity, and the mocker's book (wherein he makes her bunny a homosexual) also has his proceeds going to charity. When asked how she felt about him making her family pet into a raging homo, she basically said she thought it was great that he took her idea of a bunny and also wrote a book which would promote charitable giving. Because the movie was heavily marketed to Hispanics here and abroad. Seem like the lefts new BFF won't go see movies that have the gayz agenda built in.
