Two engineers were standing at the base of a flagpole, looking at its top.

A woman walked by and asked what they were doing.

"We're supposed to find the height of this flagpole," said Paul, "but we don't have a ladder."

The woman took a wrench from her purse, loosened a couple of bolts, and laid the pole down on the ground. Then she took a tape measure from her pocketbook, took a measurement, announced, "Twenty one feet, six inches," and walked away.

One engineer shook his head and laughed, "A lot of good that does us. We ask for the height and she gives us the length!"

Both engineers have since quit their engineering jobs and are currently serving in the United States Congress.

Did you know earlier this evening there was Earth Hour?

Earth Hour celebrates ignorance, poverty and backwardness. By repudiating the greatest engine of liberation it becomes an hour devoted to anti-humanism. It encourages the sanctimonious gesture of turning off trivial appliances for a trivial amount of time, in deference to some ill-defined abstraction called “the Earth,” all the while hypocritically retaining the real benefits of continuous, reliable electricity.

People who see virtue in doing without electricity should shut off their fridge, stove, microwave, computer, water heater, lights, TV and all other appliances for a month, not an hour. And pop down to the cardiac unit at the hospital and shut the power off there too.

There are a number among us who have sleep issues. Perhaps this will help. How to fall asleep fast.

Yet the ability to fall asleep in two minutes or less, anywhere, anytime, is actually a skill like any other, and one anyone can learn. The technique for how to do so was in fact developed for Naval aviators during World War II, and today we’ll share it with you.

How to Fall Asleep in 2 Minutes or Less
A couple years into WWII, the U.S. military realized it had a problem on its hands. Due to the enormous pressures of aerial combat, many of its pilots were accumulating levels of stress so debilitating that they were cracking under it. The tension caused them to lock up in flight and make fatal mistakes — accidentally shooting down friendly planes, or becoming an avoidable casualty themselves.

Clay Shaw, The only man ever tried for the assassination of JFK.

Clay Shaw truly had nothing to do with the assassination, but a mistake in a local newspaper led the public, and the prosecutors, to believe otherwise.

Clay Shaw was a highly respected businessman and decorated World War II hero from New Orleans. A pillar of the city’s economic growth, Shaw was instrumental in creating New Orleans’ World Trade Center in the late 1940s after the war ended.

Shaw was also, unwittingly and mistakenly, part of the city’s most infamous connection to the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Shaw was the only person put on trial with regards to the Kennedy assassination, and it was all because of a single lie from a single media source printed two years before the president’s death.

The views expressed here are not those of Ace, upper management or Ace's sponsors. I don't want San Francisco in the USA anymore.
Major brands like Gucci, Versace and Furla have recently announced their intention to go fur-free, and now the city of San Francisco is joining the movement. On Tuesday night, the city's Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to ban fur sales in San Francisco.

"The sale of fur products in San Francisco is inconsistent with the City's ethos of treating all living beings, humans and animals alike, with kindness," said San Francisco district supervisor Katy Tang in a press release.

Ugh.

*****

New Zealand hopes that San Francisco Supervisor Katy Tang stays in the USA. Adios rodents.

It’s not often conservationists celebrate the mass killing of animals, but managing our relationship with nature these days requires creative, and often compromising, solutions. Such is the case in New Zealand, where leaders are determined to get rid of all rats, possums, stoats, and other invasive predators by 2050. A major step towards this goal was just achieved on one of the country’s subantarctic islands, where hundreds of thousands of mice have officially been eradicated.

F*ck the ethos of kindness.

Screw the "Platinum Card". I want this "Gold Card".

Here's one thing that Bill Gates, Rob Lowe, and Warren Buffet have in common that isn't being rich dudes.
McDonald's Gold Cards. What's a McDonald's Gold Card, you ask? Well, it's only the greatest thing you've never heard of. Basically, if you have one of these cards, you can go to the McDonald's franchise that gave it to you (or in the case of Mr. Gates, any McDonald's anywhere in the world) and grab a free meal whenever you want.

Sounds great, right? Sadly, however, you usually have to be pretty extraordinary (or at least extraordinarily famous) to nab one of these. Rob Lowe recently shared his Gold Card secret with Jimmy Kimmel and we've been jealous ever since.

Unemployed? Self-Employed Genius Award Winners.

An unemployed Massachusetts couple had nearly seven pounds of heroin, more than two pounds of cocaine and $40,000 in drug proceeds stashed in hidden compartments of their vehicle when they were stopped in Paramus by members of a joint county, state and federal task force, authorities said.

Candido Tomasini, 35, and Maribel Roman, 40, of Fitchburg were both ordered held in the Bergen County Jail pending a detention hearing this Friday, Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Dennis Calo said.

there wasn't one, just a washer with a bit of screen on it, to catch chunks coming out of the hose, but hey, who am i to judge?

got around to the pressure hose connection, and the fitting wouldn't go in.

why?

because there was a shipping plug on THAT connection.

bad words were spoken, the screen reinserted in its home, and the plug removed.

2. never eat in one staffed by the owner of the family or by staff that is not proportionally representative of the local population. recently have been encountering mcds owned and staffed by one family. service sucks.

Measuring the height of the flagpole needs only a measuring stick and basic math. Stand up yer 1 unit length stick next to the flagpole, measure the shadow, measure the length of the flagpole shadow, a little quick math using similar triangles and yer done.

Taking down the flagpole before measuring it is for relatively dumb people with too much time and energy.

quit eating there because there is no clear distinction between who is on duty. things get busy, grandma and grandpa put down their paper and coffee, wander behind the counter into the kitchen and start slinging gyros or whatever. even worse their five year old kid who is not tall enough to top the counter is always on duty running around the restaurant, playing on the floor, then into the kitchen rubbing his hands all over everything.

Pfft. One night of a full moon, I noticed that the shadow of our flagpole was clearly defined. A quick check at the Naval Observatory site ( http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/AltAz.php ) showed the elevation/time data. That night, at the minute that I checked, at my location, it was 73 deg.

I stuck trowel in the ground at the peak of the shadow, and measured the distance to the foot of the pole. Pythagoras did the math, and told me 25', which is exactly correct.

Today I made fire-lighters. The traditional way is to pour wax into a wad of sawdust, but I like to cut up old cotton cloth into 2" x 2" squares, and soak them with melted wax and let it cool and stiffen. It makes a good fire starter, it won't really get damp, catches quickly, burns hot, and it keeps a good hot flame.

274 so, our goofy apartment building has run out of parking spaces. have come home a couple of times and not only was there not anything open in our side of the complex, there was nothing available except fire lanes and handicapped spots.

newer complex which has only finished leasing up. unfortunately, to lease up they seem to have let ots of stuff slide with new tenants. some guys have their work truck and their personal car in the lot. there are also some units that are leased to groups of guys so they have more cars than allowed. lots of winks and nods to get the place leased up because they took a lot longer to get leased up. some people have even stored trailers and cars in the lot that have not moved for weeks.

I didn't really know what to say. I asked her what she thought. She said "I think it's because the people that make movies are mad because they weren't as popular as blonde cheerleaders or couldn't date a cheerleader."

I told her that sounded like a pretty good theory.

413 Spring! Glorious spring!

I am sitting in my recliner for the third day straight with a walker close at hand in case I might need to do something trivial, like to go the bathroom or get something to eat. Why? you might ask. Because it's f'ing March, that's why! F'ing March in f'ing Nebraska -- allergy capital of the Known World! Trees pollinate in March, and I normally spend March walking around with all my pockets stuffed full of used or soon to be used Kleenex. This year, the tree pollen decided to do something it hasn't done before: plug up my eustachian tubes. I stand up and immediately face plant.

The doctor gave me a prescription for flonase, a prescription for a medication to stop the vertigo, and a sheet of paper detailing a minor exercise I'm supposed to do three times a day. I did it once last night, and Himself had to drag me from the bedroom to my recliner because my head was spinning so brutally. It took five -- count 'em! --FIVE stinking hours before I could even try to stand up again.

Screw Spring!!!!

Remember when there seemed to be more of a pattern of having "other topic" posts right below certain posts? KT - who really does an outstanding job in *both* of her regular posts - always puts the pre-gardening thread below gardening, and my impression is that works quite well.

450 378 Mike Hammer -- Vent windows! I loved vent windows. You could open them just enough to let in some fresh air without getting blown out of the car and half way to China. (Of course, I am writing about the good old days when car and conditioning was optional and expensive.) Somehow, just lowering the windows an inch or so just isn't the same.

That's another thing my kids and grandkids can't imagine -- a car without air conditioning. And dial phones. And black and white tvs. I remember the Christmas my parents gave me a transistor radio -- they wore out God only knows how many sets of batteries before placing it in my hot little hands Christmas morning because they were so stunned by it and listened to it for hours after we kids had gone to bed.

Didn't but doesn't matter. Yuck Fou, etc.

I'm ENVIOUS, dammit!

A very serious dream and bucket list kind of thing for me. To be able to take an expense and time be damned, guided, motorcycle tour of wherever I want to go in any part of Europe, all the way to the Russian border, if need be.

Might take a couple years, or more, before I had enough road miles in the logbook to assuage that itch.

"Guided" being a loosely held term. Sometimes, to ride with such, others, to simply have the tour company make loose arrangements, in advance.

Eidelweiss Tours, excels in these excursions. Though, not cheaply.

Just y'all do kindly let me know where I can buy the winning lotto ticket so as to fund such an outing? No?

The food in Rome was off the charts. I could have lived just on the bread. The food in Florence on the other hand was kinda shit. The hotel food blew ass, the pizza place down the street blew ass. I just didn't have much luck there with food. Florence was beautiful, but damn it was like spring break so it was flooded with retarded kids. I was more interested in the old roman ruins around Rome, and Pompeii. The Colosseum was intense, and eerie. Walking out on the main level and looking up into the stands, and just thinking about 1000's of blood thirsty retards cheering your violent death was spooky. Pompeii was a blast, and the Pantheon in Rome was great. Saw the Vatican, and actually saw the pope. He gave the crowed a blessing. It was a little rainy that day, but it was probably better off that way, because if I had burst into flames it would be a short burn. Overall it was pretty amazing.

My brother was entertaining. We saw a beggar at the vatican, basically a gypsy with one hell of a racket. She was cleaning up. My father tried to give her American coins because we didn't have euros yet, and she refused them. My brother told her all he had was a credit card, and if she bent over he would swipe the card in the crack of her ass.
Didn't see any guitars though.

478 But Jim, often as not I would use airline miles, and lodging was, um, free (her place in a nice Rome neighborhood). Work took me there, that's how I met her. United had a great connection from Dulles that arrived around 8AM, so she could meet me at the airport and drop me off then go to the office (on my "private" visits).

I remember once talking with a good friend the morning of a return from one of these trips, he casually/typically asked "what did you do this weekend?". I went blank, couldn't think of an answer - because it was sort of disorienting, the total change of environment for 72+ hours, then home again. "Um, uh, ..... oh, right, I was in Rome with XXXXXX".

Have been lucky with int'l travel, but I sought it out. And much of that travel has been to s**tholes, to use the Trumpian technical term. But that's where stuff is happening, so, never boring.

Hot and burning in your nostrils

That's from Cities in Dust by Siouxsie And The Banshees. Never understood what she was saying in that song, so I looked up the lyrics. They looked kind of gruesome, but it turns out the song is about Pompeii, though the word is never mentioned in the song.

So, not some kind of death threat by the Banshees but just a little stroll through history.

They use small cups, like really small cups, even for what they call "American coffee", so I was coffee deficient all week. Coffee in rome was fantastic, and no surprise, really sucked in Florence. On the other hand, I had the biggest beer of my life in Venice. I ordered a beer, and the guy asks if I want a big beer. breakfast sausage, it is like goo in a tube. Then again, it is not all
that bad.
You know there is a reason a "Continental breakfast" is
basically coffee and some pastries, they don't do American/English
breakfast too well. Worst I ever had was in Athens.

Posted by: Quint at March 25, 2018 02:10 AM (n13/j)

The breakfast in Florence had a continental element also, but even the pastries were kind of tasteless, and washing it down with that shitty coffee was a bridge too far. I was eating mostly eggs and toast. I couldn't believe it, the pastries had almost no taste. My hotel in Sorrento was the breakfast king. The bacon was exactly like ours, with the Rome hotel not being far behind. The Florence one....yeah, the Ethiopians would stick their nose up at it.

Posted by: Quint at March 25, 2018 02:19 AM (n13/j)

524 European countries and Canada define "bacon" from
the cut from the back of the pig. We define bacon as streaky bacon/side
bacon, ie. bacon cut from the side of the pig. I agree, side bacon is
the one true bacon.

Posted by: Steve and Cold Bear at March 25, 2018 02:16 AM (/qEW2)

Believe it or not, back bacon is pretty damned hard to find in western Canada.

One thing I always enjoyed about travel was researching the best places to get iconic foods, such as gelato in Italy. Then you notice even in Italy, just like the US, most restaurants etc. are just average, and many suck. You have to seek out the really good ones, although that can be a pain traveling in an unfamiliar place. Certainly touristy parts of Italy have a lot of places that serve "sucky" food. My best tip is if a restaurant has its menu outside translated into 5 or more languages, move on. The best places are those that seem the least inviting to tourists.
Anyway, it is all part of travel. You will probably remember that Florentine breakfast longer than some others At least you went before the big tourist season cranks up. Was the weather ok?

The best places are the hole in the wall places. They always have the best food. That didn't seem to work in Florence though, although my brother ate at some place that he said was amazing. I had the shittiest pizza in my life in Florence. The weather was a little shitty in Rome. It rained, then cleared up, then rained some more, etc. Mornings seemed always nice, then it would rain after breakfast, then clear up for lunch, then maybe rain again. It frigging deluged in Capri. The weather in Florence and Tuscany was perfect, blue cloudless skies. Curiously, right before the pope spoke it cleared up and became a nice blue sky, then rained again an hour after.

Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Divison at March 25, 2018 02:37 AM (aMlLZ)

533 530- Even back many years ago, I remember the "migrants" in Rome in particular. They would have all this cheap knock off stuff they sold to tourists. They would display their wares on a bed sheet type thing. And when the cops came, they would sweep it up and run off like a hobo with a carry bag. Then when the cop went by, back in business.

Posted by: Steve and Cold Bear at March 25, 2018 02:34 AM (/qEW2)

I saw very few immigrants. I was a little surprised. Florence on the other hand (of course) seemed to have a little more immigrant run convenience stores. It wasn't like I feared it would be. Not walking the streets anyway, they could have been inside building bombs for all I know. I did see a street walker though. Beautiful chick, long brown hair, black stockings, a yellow skirt that barely covered her ass, high heels, thin, and a nice rack. She was on a her cell phone walking past the hotel at 7:30 am. My brother said oh yeah, she isn't going to work on a sunday dressed like that, she's just getting home. She had to be one pricey piece of ass.

There seemed to be a very cute muslim chick that was hanging in the hotel bar in rome joking around with the bartender one night. She seemed very nice, saw her at breakfast the next day and she smiled at me. Seemed very classy, dressed nice, held her tea cup as if she was royalty. Probably a student, not sure. Very fair skinned. That was the only one I saw in a head scarf the whole time I was there.

Good to hear. Remarkable that they are in the Mediterranean and haven't had a single attack (that I can recall) apart from the murder of a man and his wife on the beach several months back.
