The victims -- two white men ages 23 and 22 —--were wounded about 8:30 p.m. as they walked along the 4800 block of Dawn Song Drive, southwest of downtown Austin. Their injuries were not life-threatening, authorities said. Interim police Chief Brian Manley said authorities believe the pair were walking on either the sidewalk or the median when the device was triggered by a trip wire. "That changes things," he said at an overnight news conference. "Our safety message to this point has been involving the handling of packages, and telling this community, 'Do not handle packages, do not pick up packages, do not disturb packages.' "We now need to have an extra level of vigilance and pay attention to any suspicious device, whether it be a package, a bag, a backpack -- anything that looks out of place - -and please do not approach it."I don't know that a trip wire indicates a "higher level of skill" -- isn't there a small tripwire in a package bomb that detonates the bomb when a flap of the box is opened? -- but obviously this guy makes bombs and isn't going to stop until he's caught or is hoist upon one of his own homebrew petards. This is a description of the tripwire, btw: Frederick Milanowski, special agent in charge for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, said that the bomb was anchored to a metal sign near a hiking trail and triggered by a wire as thin as fishing line that would've been incredibly difficult to see.Again, that doesn't sound that sophisticated to me, but what do I know. It strikes me as possibly interesting that the bomber has apparently stopped leaving bombs in neighborhoods and is instead now leaving bombs on hiking trails -- where he would be less likely to be seen. I suppose that means he's aware people are looking for him, though I'm not sure that helps catch him any.

East of I-35 in Austin is the traditionally minority neighborhood, notably black.
The most recent one is in one of the wealthier neighborhoods of SW Austin. Know several families there. It's majority white, since people are looking for patterns. Posted by: TexasDan at March 19, 2018 05:14 PM (yL25O) 21

Too generalize, east of 35 would be more likely to result in minority casualties, while west of 35 would be more likely to hit whites. That's a very big generalization though as various areas to the east are/have bedn gentrified tomone degree or another. I assume that and the race of the two most recent victims have persuaded aughorities that thr bombings aren't specifically targeting minorities. My hunches shojld be taken with sn enormous grain of salt though.

The first two targets were from prominent families, so it makes sense they were specifically targeted. They were also black. The subsequent bombings look more random. So perhaps they are just the bomber's cover to distract and muddle the initial motive. Posted by: wooga at March 19, 2018 05:16 PM (PnpIB) 31

++++ They're trying to get the guy to call them. I don't know why they think he will, but that's what they have been putting out there. So, they will likely be getting calls from people who are not him. So, they have to hold something back. I'm guessing it's the details about the tripwire. They tell us it shows proficiency, but they are ambiguous about how. If the real guy calls in, he will be able to provide the details about his tripwire. I'm also guessing there is some kind of extortion thing going on. He is bombing until they do what he wants. Their position is they need to talk about it, so they are asking him to call. That's why they think asking him to call might work. He wants something and to get it he has to negotiate. Posted by: Slick Willie Clinton at March 19, 2018 05:17 PM (pvjTE) 42

Pity the fool. A reasonably competent bomb maker is a hard fugitive to find. The good ones still have all of their fingers and limbs and they aren't carrying around an oxygen tank. This could all get much worse before it gets better. I suppose that a clever psycho would leave a trail of clues ... like simple stuff at first, escalating to more sophisticated work as the saga becomes more interesting for them. This is one of those ones where somebody has to be willing to just sit and wait for the next clue. ... I saw a lot of FBI jackets in those early pictures. So, corruption at the top aside, God bless you people and go get'em.

If he is truly random, they may never find him til he slips up and someone sees him.
More likely they will track him down by bomb parts. That stuff is very highly regulated and tracable in most cases. Even if he's creating his own explosives, the parts are traceable. Many people have security cameras now, and it is easy to record motion. They are cheap and pretty good quality. If cops collect enough of them from the areas bombed, they may find some figure that appears in several of them.
But that will require some overtime, and if he is bundled up, might not yield much unless they also find a car common to the various scenes of crime. Posted by: illiniwek at March 19, 2018 05:24 PM (bT8Z4) 104
So he drove his car into the residential areas. He doesn't want to do that again because he's aware of home video surveillance cameras.
He went to the park because no obvious surveillance. Expect him to continue in those types of settings. Or to utilize the mail or some package service to deliver his bombs. The fact that he has not already used the mail/delivery suggests that he isn't confident in his trigger. If he could do it he would have since it eliminates the risk of being caught or filmed putting the device down. So he is using an unsophisticated system that might be triggered if jostled. It could be a kid, or a internet self taught terrorist although the lack of public credit taking suggests against terrorism. Posted by: simplemind at March 19, 2018 05:24 PM (QVO/t) 105

I've often wondered if in, say, Iraq, where radio detonation of IEDs was a thing, if we ever just blast out radio square waves or other white noise in hopes of setting off one of the terrorists' bombs "prematurely," shall we say?

I think it's always been there, but the BATFEIEIO insists they're a "three-letter agency" called the "ATF" and all the other agencies insist on their full name. The unofficial compromise is "BATF". Then, small bomb......wait about an hour, then, big bomb, either on scene (max casualties) or on the other side of town, at another, more valuable target.

I propose a school walk-out to protest the sale of bicycles. If no one had a bike, then no one would have tripped a wire while walking a bike. On the other hand, maybe we should just make "walking" illegal! If you run over a trip-wire going 20 mph, the likelihood of getting injured goes way down! It might F* you up a little, and make your ears ring for a day or two, but that's way better than laying there wondering where your leg went.

I was thinking of that with respect to this case. Most killers are going to do target selection with the thought of doing the most damage, like the Las Vegas Shooter. But this bomber simply left his bomb on the side of the road in a residential neighborhood? And it only injured 2 people who ran into it completely at random? That is very weird. You go to all the trouble and risk to build and deploy a bomb, you figure the bomber would want to have the biggest impact he could get. But this guy doesn't. 276 I remember a while back when they found a CA bomb makers house loaded up with explosives. They had what looked like every emergency vehicle in the state surrounding the place. I mean thousands of cop cars, SWATies, and Fire apparatus just to have one bomb guy walk up the front door and throw a road flare inside to burn the place down.
Posted by: Under Fire at March 19, 2018 05:44 PM (r9UYA) --- It was not so much that it was loaded up with bang powder -- there were small amounts here and there. The house was a pig sty and the small amounts of explosive were all through the clutter. The authorities made a huge hairy deal about it, but there were just a few tiny pops as they burned it. The weirdo rented the house, and it was a total loss for the owner as his insurance did not cover it. For a few grand I would have been happy to put on an armored suit and clean the place out. Officer safety don't you know. Shoot a dog, shoot a groveling drunk, burn a house, burn a whole city block (MOVE in Philly), god forbid they should take a risk. Just looked at that map showing the bomb sites and the weirdness of it just jumps out at me. Austin is FULL of high profile targets - the State Capitol, downtown will all kinds of big banks, prominent buildings, The University, 6th street which is always packed with partygoers, just got done with SXSW which had musical events all over the place - and yet the bomber ignores all of those and sticks his bombs out in neighborhoods away from all of that.
I think it guarantees that his motivation isn't political in any way, since he has stayed far far away from all of the big targets that have political connections - Austin is full of them. Posted by: Tom Servo at March 19, 2018 06:09 PM (k1TUh) 423

Austin resident here.
Austin does not have as large of a black population as other major cities like Houston or Dallas, but the population we do have is historically on the east side of town with the Latino population. So Austin, being a liberal city, is overly reactive and pandering to any political appeals by east side residents while its white liberal residents gentrify their neighborhoods. So the location of the first three bombs is significant and could be easily attributed by locals to a race-related motivation. The fact that the bomber immediately switched to the opposite demographic as soon as "hate crime" flashed on the local news is a curious indication that our culprit has no shame in being labeled a terrorists, yet is apparently sensitive to being thought of as a damned dirty racist. And if he is sensitive to being labeled as such, it leads me to believe that he has not lived in Austin for very long if he was not aware of the socio-political sensitivity of terrorizing that area of town. Then again, the majority of Austinites are not from Austin, but it could be a valuable data point. Posted by: Brisco_County_Sr at March 19, 2018 06:15 PM (HwKTL) 447

417 276 I remember a while back when they found a CA bomb makers house loaded up with explosives.
Maritime I haven't followed the case that closely, but yes, on the face of it this looks like one of the most brazen (and destructive) usurpations by the judiciary yet - which of course is saying something these days, when the const. order has just about completely collapsed whenever a judge decides to usurp power

Annoying but I don't see how the Supreme Court has any jurisdiction. Its a state matter.

me. If you don't remember they firebombed an Apartment building that this Black separatist group was hold up in. There was what 1 survivor a little boy.
Posted by: Patrick From Ohio at March 19, 2018 06:17 PM (dKiJG) --- After ignoring this row house full of black MOVE lunatics terrorizing a black Philly neighborhood for months, the cops got into a gun fight with them. The authorities had let the situation fester while the house was armed and fortified, piles of garbage grew high in the yard, and loudspeakers spewing gibberish kept the neighbors awake around the clock. After shots were fired the mayor (black) approved a police plan to drop 3 pounds of C-4 on the roof. This partially blew up the building and ignited gasoline stored by the weirdos for making Molotov cocktails. The fire dept. held back for fear of shooting, and 50+ houses burned. One of the most complete fiascos ever. Posted by: Semi-Literate Thug at March 19, 2018 06:32 PM (Uv2+Q) 544

They're messy cases, legally. So SCOTUS has tried to defer. But when the PA court weighs in, and unilaterally redraws .... Posted by: Ignoramus at March 19, 2018 06:34 PM (n+6mJ) Posted by: naturalfake at March 19, 2018 06:37 PM (9q7Dl) 547

At the range (outdoor), we can't use brooms on the firing line to police up brass, trash, etc. Oh no. Cuz OSHA decided that using brooms would agitate the lead dust surely present, presenting a HEALTH HAZARD!!!! eleventy!!!! A f***ing absurd rule, without any possible scientific basis, considering all the relevant facts.
Posted by: Very Unstable Semi-Genius, AKA rhomboid at March 19, 2018 06:25 PM (knKQ1) I've never understood that bit about lead. Lead compounds, sure. But elemental lead? BFD. It's FAR down the list of things I'd worry about. For the record, there's a lot of confusion - virtually ubiquitous among laymen - about the difference between organolead compounds (e.g., tetraethyllead), inorganic lead compounds, and elemental lead, probably because lead is reported in each case as the equivalent amount of the element. Austin native and long-term resident here (now happily living just outside the Peoples' Republic).
No inside knowledge, but it also seems to me that the most recent bomb is either a copycat or set for some other reason. (Husband's initial response was that it might be a booby trap for a marijuana grow op. The most recent bombing is near greenbelt. Also makes sense.) The MO does indeed seem different. The first two were packages left on porches in East Austin. This one was a tripwire bomb--in a backpack, as I understand it--in a very quiet (and relatively unknown to urban Austinites) neighborhood. I think the police floated the "call me maybe" thing to get any kind of a lead. As to the likely profile of the bomber(s), Austin is full of every stripe of cray-cray you want to name. Watch Slacker if you have any doubt of how deep our wacko roots stretch. Posted by: Art Rondolet of Malmsey at March 19, 2018 06:43 PM (S+f+m) 553

_______________________________________________ Was this in the Philly Suburbs? There was a bomber in this neck of the woods (Western suburbs) back around the early 90s who was never caught. Nick Berg, the kid who went to Iraq as a telecom contractor and was beheaded was looked at as a possible suspect, though I think it was someone else. We just had an apartment blow up in a town in Wi because of uh, something, they won't say, but they did burn down the building as a precaution (and to destroy evidence. Hershey kiss hat off) WTF. Posted by: OneEyedJack at March 19, 2018 05:29 PM (z79tQ)Saw that last week. Very strange. And the bomb maker who blew himself up apparently was a well liked, seemingly normal guy, IIRC. Triggering with a wire is tricky. Too much tension and you blow yourself up. too little and it might not trigger the detonator.

All of these are a lot further south-east from where we live. Doesn't make it any less cary though. Working from home, we do a lot of order and delivery type stuff, and now it's kinda creeping me out. This evening, there was a truck parked near our place that I normally wouldn't have really cared about, but suddenly it's like: who's truck is that, and why is it parked there?
I hope they catch this sumbitch soon, or he blows his own ass off. Posted by: adc at March 19, 2018 11:22 PM (cfg4h) 563
None of them are too far from UT. South Congress leads away from the state capitol and into poorer neighborhoods, where the first bombs detonated, the trip wire bomb is closer to some of the more affluent neighborhoods. My brother and his wife live down in SW Austin.
Could be another Unibomber type, probably attached or recently detached from Univ of Texas and as surmised above, a disgruntled totalitarian upset that Austin isn't totalitarian enough. Posted by: The Mouse that Roared, Americans don't Serf at March 20, 2018 07:15 AM (DxWUs) 564
As to the higher level skill, perhaps the explosive was directional, like a claymore mine?
