Mengs St Joseph.jpg

The Dream Of St. Joseph
Anton Raphael Mengs

From commenter ""Bluebell"

March 19 is the Feast of St. Joseph, the husband of Mary. It is a Solemnity, which means it is higher than a regular feast day and as such, we Catholics are not bound by our Lenten obligations. Translation: we get to pig out! It's a huge holiday for Italians, as well.

St. Joseph is the patron saint of many things, but on this day we celebrate him as the husband of Mary, so as the patron saint of husbands and fathers.

The angel is telling him that he has to take his wife and baby and flee to Egypt. No easy task.

Anyway, just in case you needed something for tomorrow, here it is. And if not, maybe you learned a bit about St. Joseph!

17 At first glance I thought 'Italian'. Surprised by name so looked up...

Anton Raphael Mengs (March 22, 1728[1] – June 29, 1779) was a German Bohemian painter, active in Rome, Madrid and Saxony, who became one of the precursors to Neoclassical painting.

31 Mengs is considered the first true NeoClassicist (the same style as Jacques-Louis David). You can see a little Greek homage in the Angel's face. The browline and nose are perfectly straight. This is a trademark of Classical Greek faces. It has a staged feel to it--very neoclassical. The colors are bright and contrast nicely. The forms are cleanly defined. It is these traits that David, in the next generation, would master and make the style and himself almost inseparable.

One of Mengs' most famous works is called "Parnassus". It's essentially an Apollo family portrait showing the 9 Muses, Apollo and the Muses' mother. It's in every textbook I've come across, but it's really rather dry. This one is much better.

72 Didn't know a whole lot about this man. The bible doesn't say a lot about him.

When Mary turned up pregnant, and Joseph knew he wasn't the father, Joseph had two options. Under Jewish law, he could have her stoned, or he could quietly annul the betrothal.

Joseph decided to quietly annul the betrothal.

Later, Joseph was informed of the miraculous and blessed nature of Mary's pregnancy and he accepted his calling to help raise the Son of God.

I think these things tell us plenty about who Joseph was. He was kind, righteous, forgiving, not vindictive, and chosen.

78 The contrast between the angel and Joseph is nice. Joseph is dark and aged. His clothes are heavy with deep, complimentary colors. The orange-gold contrasts nicely with the slate-blue. He's very earthy.

The angel is light and bright, pale and blonde. The colors are a purple-white. It is active and very otherworldly.

There are very few straight lines, but not a lot of dramatically slanted ones either. The lines have a gradual incline, reflecting the relaxed state of Joseph. The lines of the angel are more active, reflecting the urgency of its message. The line of the pointing finger-to arm-to open hand, for example. I also like how Mengs rendered the angel's hair as blowing in the wind, as though the angel rushed here and just arrived. It almost looks like it started talking before it even finished moving, again reflecting that sense of urgency.

I think that's what they were called. It was kind of a band saw you operated with a foot pedal that was attached to a spring pole, so when you let go of the foot pedal, the spring pole drew the saw upward.

That is an intriguing thought, one I'd never heard of before! Thanks for getting my little grey cells going this morning. Though maybe there were women pregnant at the time of the slaughter, so could have friends born right after him. Or there was a boom crop of kids the following year to replace the child lost. We know he and John the Baptist were within a year of each other and John survived to adulthood. (Only to lose his head but that's another story.)

From commenter ""Bluebell"

March 19 is the Feast of St. Joseph, the husband of Mary. It is a Solemnity, which means it is higher than a regular feast day and as such, we Catholics are not bound by our Lenten obligations.

This is my first Lent since returning to the Faith. I really wanted to do the whole 1962 Lenten practice but on a high-protein diet it wasn't feasible, but at least I can do the current practice and Ember Days.

My Lenten sacrifice - my music - now, that's been tough. Less than #twoweeks left.

good points I guess, says Sessions is the cleanest kid in congress or something. But admits the drawback on the recusal.

But was it really necessary to appoint an AG from inside Congress? And how much better off would we be without Rosenstein/Mueller doing a witch hunt for a year, causing untold damage, collecting (blackmail material) from deep inside Trump's campaign?

Why couldn't a Jay Christian Adam type have been just as careful, but no recusal, so retained authority over the made men of deep state, which still has no end in sight?

All this talk of how careful Sessions has been ... how much work is he actually doing? He is just the head, and recusal caused massive problems. There was no reason I see to have put a Trump campaign guy in as AG, or a member of Congress ... both positions giving Sessions a partisan label.

I can trust Sessions, and still not believe he was actually the right man for the job. (and his recusal was not the only issue, as congress was obstructed, and so is Judicial Watch) The article say conservatives that complain lack "strategy" ... but what lacked strategy was appointing a partisan guy whose recusal would allow $100M/year to be spent on attacks from within with no oversight except from the bad guys.

158 As we're on the subject -

I'm not very religious, though I have to say for me the part of the Bible that made the greatest impact on me is reading about Jesus in Gethsamane. Just thinking about it, how when the time comes, you are locked into a very difficult path and it suddenly becomes very real. Agony is putting it lightly.

And tangential to that, I give Kevin Smith a lot of grief but in the movie Dogma there was a bit where Metatron talked about how he had to tell a young Jesus about his fate. For similar reasons, that kicked me as well.

Again, I'm not religious and if I'm being too trivial in how I look at this, and therefore offensive to some or all, then I apologize.

165 It's always been my thought that ol' Papa Joe got the short end of the history stick.

After the family trip to Jerusalem, he is missing and by the time the Baptist sees Jesus, Joe is presumed dead.

Some say that Joe was an old man, the only one who would marry that young knocked-up unmarried gal. And did they have other kids? Magic eight-ball says: unclear.

I like to think of Joseph as a hearty young carpenter who married a pretty gal and they had the most remarkable firstborn, plus a bevy of younger sibs, including James, before Joe died in a construction accident, leaving young Jesus to be "dad" for a household, and supporter of Mary. So Jesus was in all points tested even as mortal parents are. (Including dealing with the rowdy "middle kid." YKWIM.)

From the first time I read about Matthew's possibly inappropriately applying the phrase "young woman" as "virgin," I decided it took nothing away from Jesus. God could as easily father Jesus through Joe's genetic contribution as not. Even more miraculous that way, sorta, to my thinking.

My faith is not so much based on the supposed un-inseminated birth miracle, as on the rose-from-the-dead one at the other end of Jesus' life.

Feel free to disdain me for my non-traditional thoughts.

I'm raising my coffee cup in any case to Joseph, who was given a challenging job, starting with trusting (eventually, with a nudge) Mary about having seen an angel - and apparently Joe did his job pretty well.

Good morning, troops.

172 >>But was it really necessary to appoint an AG from inside Congress? And how much better off would we be without Rosenstein/Mueller doing a witch hunt for a year, causing untold damage, collecting (blackmail material) from deep inside Trump's campaign?

That's one way to look at it although to date nothing would indicate that any information that would be useful to blackmail Trump has emerged.

This was always a largely political exercise. The left never cared about collusion because anyone with any commonsense at all knew there never was any collusion, it was obvious from Day 1. It was an attempt to politically damage Trump more than anything else.

The only way doubt was ever going to be removed was through a complete airing of the "evidence". If people think that Trump could have just shut things down from the start and the media and the left wouldn't have spent the last year insisting that their was a coverup and the lack of an investigation proves Trump was working with Russia they are delusional. It would never have ended and arguably would have done significant damage to Trump's political future.

Mueller has done a fine job of showing he has absolutely nothing on Trump and when he wraps up he still won't have any evidence that he worked with Russia to rig the election. He will in effect prove Trump's innocence.

And now the IG and Sessions have a chance to completely overwhelm the Mueller investigation with evidence of real crimes at the highest levels of the Obama administration and the Hillary campaign.

A flaw in that idea - the slaughter of the infants happened in Bethlehem, but when Mary and Joseph returned from the sojourn in Egypt (probably in Alexandria, since there was a very large Jewish population in that city at the time), they went back to live in Nazareth, in the province of Galilee, not in Herod's Judea.

And sometimes critics will point out that there is no independent corroboration of the slaughter of the infants found outside the Book of Matthew; however, historians agree that it is certainly within Herod's character, given that he personally killed both of his own sons, and his favorite wife in fits of paranoid rage. He also set up one of the first Secret Police forces known in history and was infamous for "disappearing" anyone who criticized him publicly. He was a nasty, nasty character, who was always obsessed with thoughts of rebellion and treachery.

Seen Passion of the Christ?

Its too much for some people. Its pretty much based upon the visions of Anne Catherine Emmerich. She was pretty famous back in her time as a visionary. A famous author of the time Brentano, visited her and wrote down what she said (not without controversy - think Steven King- recording the words of a mystic and publishing it) Anyway, Mel Gibson's movie borrows its scenes heavily from Emmerich's visions. The book The Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ recounts the events of Christ's Life from like Palm Sunday through the Resurrection as she saw them. These are not "dogma" - any private revelation is something you are not obligated to believe. For lent it is a very powerful mediation on the Passion of Christ -and some people may find Gibson's movie too over powering.

191 Some apocryphal books have stories about that, but even early Christian writers denounced them as made up fantasies.

They were popular though, as one might imagine.

I like the one where Jesus and his friend are playing on a roof top and the little friend falls off and breaks his neck. When the neighbors start accusing Jesus of pushing the kid off the roof, he indignantly raises him from the dad and demands that the kid set the neighbors straight on what happened.

This has me wondering if might be a race between the IG and Mueller on who can get their report out first in order to set the "narrative".

The McCabe firing and his subsequent implication of Comey for lying under oath to Congress put a serious hit to Mueller's investigation.

If the IG report shows unethical or criminal conduct by Comey, Mueller's obstruction theory goes up in smoke.

193 This prooftext has always bothered me.

Matthew 2:14-15 And [Joseph] rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt 15 and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, "Out of Egypt I called my son."

But Matthew is quoting from Hosea 11:1
"When Israel was a child, I loved him,
and out of Egypt I called my son. 2 The more they were called, the more they went away;
they kept sacrificing to the Baals and burning offerings to idols."

But this was done a lot in early Judeo Christian circles: coming up with a reinterpretation of a text that does not seem implied by the original. Hosea seems to be referring to the exodus, not to a maneuver designed to avoid Herod that incidentally involved passing through Egypt.

I seem to recall that there was a problem with the rotor bearing assembly, resulting in the unfortunate situation where, in mid flight, the entire rotor assembly would separate and take off on its own, turning what had been a helicopter into a giant rock hanging in mid air. Briefly.

This has happened on many, many new designs, which is why "test pilot" has always been such a risky jobs. A whole lot of what turned out to be good designs have killed the first few crews that had to fly them.

And this is the problem. Why does Mueller have unlimited power to go "fishing?" That's NOT how these investigation work. You are appointed to investigate a specific charge. You can't switch the scope of the investigation on a whim because you found no evidence for the original warrant. You can't just investigate forever till the subject does something wrong. This is BS. That could be a heavy lift given that McCabe testified before Congress when he was asked point blank if the Comey firing had caused any problems for the FBI investigating Trump that it had no effect whatsoever.

Might also expose the real reason Trump fired Comey which was because Trump knew that Comey was up to his ass in trying to frame him.

The distinctive feature of Matthew, which is not done much in the other 3 gospels, is that he goes out of his way to show again and again how Jesus' life was in fulfillment of the Jewish scriptures that they all knew well. Clearly, his gospel was specifically targeted to influence practicing Jews of his day. And you're right, he pushed this concept as far as he could - still, he was doing it with a very deliberate purpose in mind.

Both can be true. The Old Testament presages the New and the New fulfills the old. There are more instances in this in the New, ie fulfilling the Old than can be counted. Even Jesus' words from the cross are directly from Isaiah, the lamentation hymn of a persecuted Israel. The fulfilling in actuality of the old testament was intended to convince and convert God's chosen people, and worked as much as it could while also including the gentiles (who didn't need or know the scripture that the Jews did).

That's why McCabe coming out and saying his "leaks" were authorized (basically) and Comey saying he never authorized leaks in his senate testimony is critical. Regardless of who you believe, one is lying. And since it's either or, you can pick which one to your advantage. So Comey's the liar, why should we believe his memos - as covering as they are - especially given he broke FBI rules by disclosing at least one confidential memo. Until one of the two stand up and say: I'm the liar, (which won't happen) then Trump is free to call both liars.

The existence of an actual plot to manufacture evidence to create a case against the president of the united states should get you fired if you work for FBI or Justice. At. A. Minimum. If you want to do that you can always get a job at CNN or the NYT or Fusion GPS.

There is evidence that McCabe told a meeting of agents the plan was First we F&ck Flynn then we F&ck Trump and most of the room cheered. Senior staff meeting by invite only. A few did not cheer. They blew the whistle.

There is also evidence McCabe told the investigating agents to alter there 302's.

There are supposedly texts between FBI agents which clearly threatened POTUS with violence.

There are still 50,000 missing emails the FBI claims it can't find.

Both can be done on the same pit.

Bbq is more indirect heat like with a side chamber for coals, or meat over well burnt coals.

Grilling is right on top of fresh coals right after they turn grey and are the hottest.

Brisket = bbq - 12 to 14 hours

Ribeye = grill - 6 to 7 minutes

It's hard grammie. It is a beautiful movie, and I think it does a good job of showing just what our sin wrought on Christ. But the beauty is that He erased it. It's gone. We are clothed in clean garments because of Jesus' willingness to suffer as the blood atonement for our sins.

I was preparing the Easter Sunday School lesson for the kids in our church, and came across a study of Jesus' loud cry. The centurion who heard it noted that it was a "loud cry", and said surely this is a son of God. It was not a cry of pain, or anguish, it was a cry of triumph.
He won.

The cross is important, because it convicts us, but the most important thing is the empty tomb. That is what gives us life in Him.

So don't worry if you can't watch the movie, you know how it ends!

grammie, it is extremely tough for me to watch. I've only done so once, in the theater when it first came out. If you consider "watch" to mean sit with my head buried in my hands for most of the time, and going through reams of Kleenex.

That said, it's an excellent movie and portrays the events well and in (excruciating) detail. I don't know that I can ever see it again. My husband watches it every year on DVD.

It is probably easier to take on a small screen, but I don't think it could ever be easy to watch. Ever.

276 pookysgirl: I've always thought it must have been strange for Jesus to grow up with no boys his age, given that they were all slaughtered.

As others have suggested, Jerusalem was the site of the massacre, far from their home in Capernum. Herod just knew of the holy family - didn't know who they were or where they were from. What a nasty guy.

Still, that was scary enough they didn't return from Egypt until Herod was dead. (I think I got that right.)

290 There is a reason Jim Caviezel became the most recognized actor in the world. The movie was very powerful! Stunning visuals and a fantastically told story.

Jim has another moving coming out in the next week or so about the Life of Paul. Looks great.

there was a panel discussion about it that was televised on World Over Live. Caviezel is a good dude.

291 272 I'm interested as to why you say angels don't wear clothing. There are many references in Scripture as to angels and what they where. For instance Mark 16:5, when the women to to the tomb.

I missed Heidi's comment...but I can imagine.

294 A lesson on the Easter story:

I attended a "Passion Play" that was put on at a black church. The African American take on the Easter story is a bit different. Still true to Scripture, but a different emphasis.

Two big takeaways: 1) Jesus was innocent. He was innocent, but they killed him anyway. In fact, they let off a guilty guy to kill the innocent one.

2) Pilate was not just passive. He was an active arm of the government who killed an innocent man.

Make of it what you will.

I watched it strictly because Caviezel was in it and was impressed with how much I learned about the political setting in which it happened. The torture inflicted on Christ was horrendous, by definition, to observe, and I don't see the need to watch it again, but the movie was extremely well done.

304 Returning to top of page and seeing the painting again - much nicer than your average Morning Report.

IC: I've always wondered about the early years of Jesus.. the gospels speak nothing of it until he is at the temple. Was he an angelic child, a rascal..

My guess would be: obedient, dutiful, studious, and somewhat of a leader among his peers. Inquisitive and thoughtful. Endless questions for the parents.

Apocrypha have young Jesus striking a playmate dead and also revivifyng a dead bird, if I recall right. (Among the many reasons they are rightly non-canonical.)

Mystic myth may get attached to religious heroes. Collections of stories may have a mix of true and false tales. I'm no Biblical Fundamentalist. I deem that we can't be sure there aren't one or two false bits in the approved four gospels (*cough* fig tree *cough*), but the Big Four were selected above all others because they were the most reliable with least distortion.

They do the job. Did for me, anyway.

WitchDoktor: I'm not very religious, though I have to say for me the part of the Bible that made the greatest impact on me is reading about Jesus in Gethsamane. Just thinking about it, how when the time comes, you are locked into a very difficult path and it suddenly becomes very real. Agony is putting it lightly....

Truly. Hard to ever think my troubles are so bad when I remember Jesus in the Garden.

I'm thankful there was someone there to observe and record it.

If you haven't gotten a chance to read McCabe's lawyer's letter yet you might want to give it a read. Particularly the part where he says that they were only shown a part of the OIG draft report last month, weeks ago, and were not given any access to the parts about criminal investigations and grand juries.

Yes, they're his own. From what I understand, they're taken by simple blood extraction, the platelets and plasma are isolated and modified (probably by magic), and re-injected into his joint.

Caviezel factoids.

he said that the layer of skin make up he had to wear had to come off every day and it took of a layer of skin with it so that it left wounds on his skin that kept getting worse every day.

He did get hit by lightning.

He dislocated his shoulder and still had to carry the cross. Fell once and bit his tongue so badly blood poured out of his mouth. (and Gibson loved it. )

317 I've seen Passion of the Christ a number of times. My husband also watch it every year on Easter Sunday. It is very hard to watch. I saw it for the first time alone on DVD and sobbed through the torture, the walk to the Crucifixion and the Crucifixion itself. The scenes with Mary listening to the torture and cleaning up the blood later were heartbreaking.

I did like the scene with Jesus as a young man making the table and explaining to Mary that people will sit one day and eat around tables. I don't know anyone can watch this movie and not be affected in some way. I remember reading about the actor who played Judas. He'd fallen away from God but turned back to Him during the filming.

I hope the rumors are true and that Mel and Jim Caviezel are planning to make a sequel about the Resurrection.
