1 The Washington Post has a story today titled "Trump reportedly hires
conspiracy theorist Joe diGenova for legal team" and it's reprinted in
local online newspapers all over. The swamp must be worried if they're
this desperate. Shameless.

Posted by: Huck Follywood, live from the gulag! at March 20, 2018 09:35 AM (rBnYq)

68 From some art site

Mary Magdalen was traditionally depicted in her grotto or as an aged woman. The absence of explicit narrative in this painting emphasizes Mary's state of mind and heart rather than time and place. The simple composition of vertical and horizontal shapes draws the viewer into the Magdalen's contemplative world. The skull, books of Scripture, and scourge set the mood, but the chief symbol and true subject of the work is the candle at which Mary gazes in her meditation. Rendered in extraordinary detail and modulation, it emits the light that followers of St. John of the Cross called "the living flame of love," toward which spiritual pilgrims are drawn out of the "dark night of the soul." La Tour scrupulously conveys the tactile quality of surfaces. The polished skull and leather books have different reflective qualities; Mary's heavy skirt, thin, wrinkled blouse, smooth flesh, and hair are meticulously distinct. Each spare detail is carefully regulated to achieve an overall balance of form and light

78 Fascinating use of candle light, which is a regular feature of de la Tour's work. Wiki says he may have been influenced by Caravagio. Given the deep red of her robe, the intricate folds of cloth, subtle skin tones, and natural pose of her posture and face, I can believe that. While hardly a light, happy painting, it achieve's the artist's aims. I would live to have a full size version to contemplate and study.

81 Thick ankles, low boobs, man feet, and an attraction to skeletons. Also the flame seems rather large. Also, who has books AND a rope belt? Was the artist showing her legs outre? If so, his using a man's leg as a model was not a good idea.

Posted by: WhatWhatWhat? at March 20, 2018 09:40 AM (Dn4Uq)

96 This is inspiration for the film "Predator."

The skull is from the alien hunter who killed her lover. He shined it up and gave it to her as a trophy.

Also the Predator didn't kill her because they don't kill pregnant women. That way they have more humans to hunt.

Posted by: Dutch at March 20, 2018 09:40 AM (ATVNj)

97 I don't think she is pregnant, just fashionably plump. Despite what some people seem to think, the current preference for very slim figures IS a cultural thing, not something hard-coded into the male brain (not that "all sizes are beautiful" feminists are right, either).

I'm surprised that folks don't recognize the genre. She is a whore contemplating her fallen state and in the process of repenting and changing her ways. The skull is indicative of her own mortality, the noose and the cross on the table are symbolic of the choice she has to make - choose her current path, which leads to death and damnation, or Christ, who is Life.

130 Mary Magdalene is often confused with a different woman in the Gospels who was a prostitute. Magdalena was a demon-possessed woman who Christ healed. She went on to join the group of women who followed Jesus and provided financial support for He and His disciples. She was one of the women at the tomb on Resurrection day, and went to tell the cry-baby disciples holed up in a room somewhere, being of no use to anyone, that Jesus was in fact risen from the dead.

Posted by: Colin at March 20, 2018 09:48 AM (Yz9i0)

133 The problem I have with some of these allegorical paintings is the historical inaccuracy. I have to assume that the two books represent the old and new testaments, however no 1st century whore or even someone in the middle class would have had access or ownership of books. In fact, I doubt there were even anything resembling bound books at the time. Scrolls were the acme of the written word and she couldn't have read those.

I'm wondering if using Magdalene allows for the painting of the female leg and nipple where otherwise the artist couldn't get away with that, ie knowing she was a prostitute.

I agree that contemplating the "light" with the cross and the noose are allegorical with the scripture in the background vs mortality.

The whip is the scourge that beat Christ (not a noose).
The cross is obvious - the crucifixion.
The skull is the tomb.
The books are the word of God.
The light is smoky, it is flickering, the resurrection has not yet happened.
And yet the faithful one is still focused on the Light.

This is the Baroque Era, just before the development of French Baroque, when Italian styles still dictated art in Catholic areas of Europe. He is definitely influenced by Caravaggio' chiaroscuro, but the Italian never shows the light source in his works. De la Tour was one of the first to do this. It adds a new challenge for the artist, as the bright light source would add new dimensions to the light/shadow contrast--dialing it up to 11. It also enhances the mood and drama.

De la Tour's style would fall out of favor with the rise of Louis XIV and the Nicholas Poussin school of art.

That's the only possible reasoning that could lead someone to say, "I don't need to save money, for I won't need any resources to help myself later."

Yes, let's put the younger elements of my generation in charge of all policy creation. The people who are falling for the exact same gauzy thinking of the original Communist Manifesto which, 150 years later, has failed to produce a single utopia despite dozens of attempts.

You'd think that the education system would need some cleaning, but apparently I'm anti-education if I want kids to learn about those failures.

As always I am confused by what is going on here.

So a publicly held company , Fartbook, who is in the business of buying and building profile information to sell to buyers on the open market, sold it to Obama in the prior election and then to another group who used it in favor of Trump in the latest election.

1. If you offer it at a price, you take all buyers willing to pay, right?2. The left is pissed because the right did what they did and beat them at their own game, so now it's collusion or something?3. The left is really starting to sound like Corky from Wonder Years.

372 gang members know, the only way to stop a bad guy (other gang) with a gun
-- is with a good guy (your gang) with a gun.

so if this was a hand gun, it is proof the crazy left will have to demand ALL guns in America be confiscated. They prefer the incrementalism approach. "We just want to confiscate "assault weapons", but handguns are used for more murder.

I'm just guessing it was a handgun, but if so, it kinda weakens their "assault weapon confiscation will save us" argument.

376 The insane left has long maintained that disproportionate black and latino prison populations is proof of racism in America's law enforcement. All people are morally the same and therefore any greater legal punishment for one race over another is racism. Or something like that.

The left has long dominated public schools and now they are bringing their ideas on punishment into local school systems. In St Paul, the district has dictated a outcome-based metric for judging the effectiveness of school discipline. To cover up the problems they create (Niklas Cruz, for example) they are taking a two pronged approach: 1) institute "discussion circles" to try to persuade bad guys to take it outside so the school doesn't look so bad, and 2) call anyone who criticizes this approach a racist.

The undisputed fact is that this approach is why Cruz was able to kill so many people at Parkland. But the press colludes with the Democrat/Socialists to hide this simple truth.

Keep your eyes open for community colleges. They seem to smile upon instructors with actual real-world experience and not just a lifetime in academia.

Also, it's my understanding that lots of states offer some sort of fast-track teaching credential (maybe even degree). You might have to move or commute, but I bet there is somewhere that would love to have you. Even better, figure out a way to tie it to a mathematics degree from a community college and make yourself extra valuable as someone who can teach two or three wildly different classes. You may even be able to do the math degree online.

Not a series, more like a reworking of the same theme. The last one looks like someone like today's painting so much they asked De la Tour to make a copy for them. It looks like it took less time and didn't cost as much.

A series in art has a very specific meaning. Usually the artist will call it "Blah, Blah, No. 2" or it will show a definite progression of events. A good example of a Traditionalist Series is Thomas Cole's "The Course of Empire". William Hogarth's works are another good example.

443 430 I'm a historian by training and would like to be teaching or something like that, so what you are describing doesn't sound like a good fit for a life-long job. I would be interested in hearing more, though.

My spam-catcher/dead drop email seems to be defunct. Is there some way to contact you? I don't want to post my usual email here because it has my real name in it.

yeah, if you're just looking for work, then it's something to do until you find what you actually want to do.

And there's a painting there with an ACE OF SPADES! being sneaked away by a card-cheat.
